A warm welcome to new and existing advertisers and contributors. We are gradually seeing events being cancelled and we hope to bring these to your attention through the magazine. The magazine is a great way of getting information out to the community. We as a company would just like to say that in these difficult times, us small businesses need to stick together, so lets keep supporting each other and hopefully we can get through these difficult times. Dr. John is always full of professional advice which everyone values and we should all take time and read what he has to say. We have some more ‘Memories of South Woodham’ so enjoy reading those articles and keep your news coming in. So it is business as usual at the Focus but please use Government guide lines and keep yourselves safe.

Why suffer in silence? If depression,  anxiety,  a relationship issue,  your weight or a phobia are having a negative impact on your life, take a look at my website to see how I may be able to help you!

www.soniabarkertherapy.co.uk

Back pain conditions vary enormously, from mild muscle strain to wear and tear or painful disc problems. Many back problems are also aggravated by stress. As a physiotherapist/acupuncturist the wonderful thing about this common problem is that although it may not be possible to cure every ailment, we can confidently give help and relief to most people. Everyone is unique and therefore each treatment will vary slightly. Relief of pain is a high priority. The combinations of manual therapy, massage, acupuncture and electrotherapy can help achieve this rapidly. Understanding your back problem and having a range of ways to cope at home is very reassuring which is why working together is an important part of any treatment. Working with gentle exercise, relaxation techniques and ergonomic advice all help to combat the combination of long term over work, poor posture and stress that many people complain of and which often contributes to their back pain. As treatment progresses and patients improve and gain confidence treatment moves from therapist managed techniques to self management so patients leave the clinic improved and in control of their own back. Our physio-led training and yoga instructions can bridge the gap so you can return to classes or the gym fully confident. We are always happy to review anyone who needs help with a recurring problem. If you would like help with a recent or long standing back problem our team of experienced physiotherapists and acupuncturists will be happy to help and advise. Let us help you. South Woodham Girls Brigade

Before Christmas, the older girls of 1st South Woodham Girls Brigade completed 3 weeks of floristry with the guidance and expertise of Sylvia from Delicate Daisy, the florist in the town. They made Christmas wreaths, an arrangement in a vase and a Christmas table decoration. The girls had a great time and learnt new skills. We would like to thank, firstly Sylvia, who made the whole experience so much fun with her smile and sense of humour. A huge thank you also goes to Mister Gees Foundation, who very kindly gave us a grant which allowed us to have such a fantastic experience. Girls Brigade meets in the Evangelical church on a Monday evening and welcomes girls from reception age. For more information please contact Eileen Sear on 329449.

Lifestyle Shutters and Blinds Ltd is an independent business that is family-owned. We are the leading installer and supplier of gorgeous shutters and blinds that are sure to complete the look of any home. We are based in South Woodham but serve all areas in Essex.

Why You Need a Professional Shutter Installer

1. Available equipment. Considering the kind of shutters you buy, you will require a specific set of equipment to go through the installation procedure. Experts have these tools and will make everything available when they are doing their job. You would not have to search for or buy any materials since you may not be needing them anymore after one installation. 2. Gives assurance when a professional installs your shutters, you can rest assured that there would not be any problems. If anything does not turn out well and your shutters did not get fixed correctly, the technicians will be liable to correct the mistake at no charge. If you install it wrong on your own, you will have to make the changes yourself at extra costs to your pocket. 3. Saves time Shutter installation is not something that you do regularly, but it is what professionals in that field do for a living. Therefore, you would not know how much time it may take you until you begin the process. On the other hand, experts will do it speedily and relieve you of the time efforts. They will work out the installation both effectively and quickly. 4. Provides assistance Installing shutters is usually not a single person’s job. Even if you get started by yourself, it is better to have others to help hand you tools, hold the shutters and ensure a standard installation. Professional installers will come along with all the help they need, so the job is done right. 5. Ensures safety Indeed, you would not want an accident happening in your home. But you may never know what will happen when you embark on a home improvement project by yourself. Installing the shutters may involve standing on ladders, using tools and putting yourself in other risky situations. Professionals are familiar with these dangers and so will operate using safer methods since they are good at what they do. Also, a licensed company carries full insurance so that if mishaps occur, the company covers it. You would not have to incur unnecessary losses. A reliable installer will gladly share documents of both the workers’ compensation insurance and liability with you. In conclusion Whenever you are ready to install shutters, and you need a reputable company to get it sorted for you, think no further than Lifestyle Window Shutters. We will help you find the proper shutters for your residential or commercial property. Shutters are a great addition to any home, and you can choose from our wide variety of options. Contact us today, and we will be glad to serve you!

FOCUS Issue 947Feature

CORONAVIRUS - AGAIN. As circumstances change rapidly and we learn more about COVID-19 we have advanced from the 'containment phase' to the 'control phase' ... the idea being that we 'flatten the curve' i.e. try to prevent a sudden surge of cases that will overwhelm the NHS. Simultaneously politicians have moved from the 'bluster phase' to the 'Aaaaarrrrggghhhh phase'. London seems to be ahead at present with a disproportionately high number of cases – so it follows that commuters are likely to be at risk – which in turn means that we will be seeing cases here shortly if we haven’t already unwittingly done so. As for advice - as well as the measures announced on Monday, hand washing still figures prominently – but, more important still, I'd say, is common sense. Last week I mentioned that I’d travelled to London by train - it was packed and not a single window was open. I had to make another journey a few days later and exactly the same thing happened. The advice now is to avoid being with people in confined spaces if at all possible - but if you absolutely have to, make sure these are well ventilated to reduce the risk of infection. One worry is that a sizeable chunk of the population hasn't changed its habits in any way shape or form in response to the crisis. The young have come under scrutiny in some sections of the media - although my impression is that many have adopted a responsible attitude. Where did this rumour start? Perhaps it's because those of us who can still remember our youth recall that we considered ourselves immortal - health messages applied to others, not to ourselves. If this is still the case despite the barrage of public information then, perhaps, those at fault should be gently reminded that precautions should be followed, not just for their own sake, but for the sake of their nearest and dearest, friends and colleagues, and everyone else with whom they come into contact. The best advice came from Professor Graham Medley who said that we should all behave as if we had already contracted the disease – in other words, rather than thinking primarily of ourselves and how we should avoid picking up this infection, we should be thinking of adopting behaviours that will protect others. Here’s some advice: At a job interview, tell them you’re willing to give 110 percent. Unless the job is a statistician. Adam Gropman As for plans for the future, you'll all be aware of this week's developments - but what more can we do? The WHO Director-General said the most important thing any country can do to get on top of the problem is “test test test." We have gone off the boil a bit here in this regard but I gather there are plans to ramp up the testing again ... in particular with regard to the lamentable way healthcare workers have been treated. These people need to be looked after as if they go off sick then everybody suffers - and the lack of testing for front line staff has been unforgivable. Prompted by developing what most women would think of as no more than 'a bit of a sniffle' (but what was really a case of 'man flu') I emailed the East of England Health Protection Team. I wondered what would happen if, when health workers contracted a mild form of the disease, they wanted to return to work, and said: "The reason for writing is because (looking forward) retired and semi retired GPs are being asked to help out when the NHS is under great pressure. If a test proves positive then it seems likely that the patient will develop immunity and can be in close contact with those who have this virus without undue risk." What were the plans? I didn't expect to get a reply ... and, sure enough, answer came there none.

Another aspect (over and above letting health workers know they have developed a degree of immunity) is that docs and nurses with mild viral infections which have caused them to self isolate need to know for sure that they are not coronavirus 'spreaders' so (a) the patients they've seen recently don't need to be unduly alarmed and (b) they can go back to work quickly. Primary care workers must do their best to protect themselves and their families at present whilst still continuing to offer a service. Expect more Skype, telephone and email consultations for the moment - which are fine as far they go. Looking to the medium/long term, however, back in February I wrote a discussion document for clinicians and Patient Participation Groups mentioning that "The basic work of general practice is not going to stop indefinitely because of the response to a substantial outbreak of new cases. There are still going to be elderly patients and patients with chronic conditions etc who will need to be seen and followed up." Given that the present situation is a marathon, not a sprint, thought will have to be given to this aspect in due course ... but for the moment it's just a matter of fire fighting.

I’d rather spend ten minutes rearranging the dishwasher to accommodate something than spend 30 seconds washing it by hand. This pandemic brings out the best and the worst in humanity. On the one hand we have the toilet roll hoarders. On the other, we have those adopting 'the spirit of the Blitz.' It has been emphasised again and again that there is a need to look after the elderly and all those who are more at risk (because their immune system isn't working as well as it should) - i.e. those who have been encouraged to stay at home. The Chief Medical Officer said the one guide to who needs special attention is to target those who are eligible for free flu jab’s on the NHS. In a town like Woodham most people will be OK– they will have friends and family, fellow church attendees and club members etc keep an eye on them and offer to help with food supplies et cetera wherever necessary. There are those who slip through the cracks, however. A long time ago, when we had a very heavy snowfall and a lot of people couldn't get out of their houses for some time, I asked the Scouts to go round and check they were OK - in those days it was allowable to pass on vulnerable patients names and addresses if there was good reason - and they did a great job! That would not be not be a way forward here - so please instead let Focus know if you’re one of those who feel that no one is looking out for you – DON'T go to the office, though - Ring 323130 or email [email protected]. Any help supplied needs to be thought through carefully. Needless to say, anyone who helps should make every effort to keep the 'patients' safe and keep themselves safe at the same time. My friends tell me that cooking is easy, but it’s not easier than not

cooking.- Maria Bamford In the missive sent out in February I wrote: "We have seen from the recent publication of the history of healthcare in South Woodham that doctors in the past improvised in order to deal with the need at a time when suitable premises had not been provided by the NHS/Essex County Council – for example Dr Ingold used to see patients in the old tin chapel. To deal with a situation the like of which we have not encountered before requires that all concerned keep an open mind and learn from the past in order to be able to come up with imaginative approaches. The proposed monthly meeting for March scheduled for Tuesday 24th March has been cancelled. The decision has been taken by the committee in light of the Coronavirus epidemic which is currently having such an effect throughout Europe and beyond. We have not taken this decision lightly but we feel that as our members are among the most vulnerable groups in society we did not want to put any of you at any more risk that you already face in day to day life. We will continue to monitor the situation and will be guided by the advice given by Government and the Medical Authorities and therefore cannot say with any certainty when we will be able to get back to normal. We will keep in touch with our members via emails and the website regarding the ongoing situation especially as our AGM is due in April and of course the renewal of memberships. Thank you all for your understanding. All the details of our organisation and its activities can be found on our website.

SWF Rotary in Conjunction with Elmwood Primary School start Rota Kids Club

A new Club has opened in the town of South Woodham Ferrers for young people below the age of 12 years called RotaKids. This is an exciting way for those of 12 and under to lead and engage in important, lively activities that will make a positive difference in their school, in their local community and globally. At the same time they develop the ability and confidence to take up their place in society as responsible, sensible, effective citizens both now and in the future. The Presentation of the Rota Kids Certificate, regalia, lapel badges, bell, T-shirts and pledge cards took place in Elmwood Primary School. An intake of 23 is very high by normal standards and the Rotary Club are proud to have the first Rotary Club in South Woodham Ferrers. It is a tribute to the staff at Elmwood School who have been so enthusiastic to the idea that their cooperation with Rotary have ensured that their pupils would have the opportunity to benefit from the ideals of community involvement along with Rotary.

FOCUS Issue 947

The first primary school in South Woodham was opened by Miss Foulger in 1929. There were three classrooms that catered for children up to age 11. During the early 1940's the number of pupils more than doubled. This was due to the evacuees being sent from all parts of London. These children were streetwise and years ahead of us. They could all swim and dance - sophistication that we had not yet mastered. To do our bit for the war effort we were all supplied with khaki or airforce blue 4-ply to knit scarves and balaclavas for our troops. On completion these were handed in to the local Women's Institute or distribution. Our efforts were far from perfect. Gas masks were issued to us and we had to take them wherever we went - if you forgot your gas mask you were sent home. "Chin in first - straps over your head" - this was practiced first thing every morning. I remember going to Champions Hall to collect my mask from Mrs Main - I think that she belonged to the WVS, the Women's Voluntary Service. The thing that I remember about this was that the door was opened by a maid in a black and white uniform. There was no secondary school in South Woodham until the William de Ferrers was opened in 1981. Most pupils either attended school in Wickford, Chelmsford or Maldon. To return home in the evening from Maldon, we had to catch one bus to Eve's Corner in Danbury, and pick up a connection from Chelmsford to Woodham to complete our journey. If we missed this connection we had to walk the five or six miles home, the next bus being over an hour away and we were not able to use it as it was a designated workman's bus, for the use of workers in the munitions factories in Chelmsford. On several occasions I walked home from Danbury and when you are twelve years old, it seems a long way. There were more churches than pubs in the 1950's. In South Woodham the only two public houses were 'The Railway Hotel' in Hullbridge Road and 'The Whalebone' in Wickford Road. The churches catered for all denominations - there was St. Mary's, the little Anglican tin church. This has now been taken over by the Salvation Army. The Assembly Hall, later called 'The Evangelical Church' has been demolished and a new modern building has been built in its place. There was a Congregation Church in Hullbridge Road which was later turned into a general store run by Harold Mills and family. This was pulled down and the site is where the video shop now stands! The first Baptist Church was in Clements Green Lane, the second in Hullbridge Road adjacent to the primary school, both operational at the same time. A quarrel resulted in 'Tebbitt's' Baptist Church being built by Reverend Tebbitt at his own expense, although the congregation was always rather thin on the ground. This building has now been incorporated into the school buildings. During the war we had a dugout shelter in the next door neighbour's garden. Three nearby families had joined together to dig out this shelter equipped with basic necessities. As soon as we heard the anti-aircraft warning we were aroused from our beds and taken to this dank, dark hole in the ground until the all clear was sounded. As children, my sister and I had to entertain the other occupants and I can still remember reciting a poem called 'The Bright Medusa' with its lines about the snakes in her hair. Sometimes we did not have time to get to the outdoor shelter and had to duck under the kitchen table when the bombs fell in the nearby fields. Later we had an indoor shelter - like a heavy metal table (called a Morrison, I think). We were put to bed in this each night but if the bombing was severe or local, we had to use the outside shelter. Mr and Mrs Dowley were one set of neighbours with whom we shared these experiences. He was a retired London firefighter and his wife had also worked in the fire brigade. At the onset of the war he was appointed chief fireman for the area and every Sunday morning the volunteers would meet in their huge garden and

squirt firehoses and do 'press-ups' and generally get fit. One of their party tricks was to demonstrate how the immense pressure from one of their hoses could knock a man off his feet. There was also Mr Long. He was an air-raid warden and took his duties very seriously - show a chink of light through your blackout curtains and he would be there on your doorstep, shades of 'Dad's Army' there! South Woodham had its own Local Defence Volunteers, later known as the Home Guard, and long cold nights were spent at various locations, including Rettendon Church. Where was justice in South Woodham South Woodham? This is the dark side of the story that never appears in the official reports, the account of the ordinary people who just wanted to carry on with their chosen way of life. Many of them had lived in the Fenn Creek area for over 30 years, others had bought holiday bungalow's where they hoped to retire, none of them wanted the upheaval and expense associated with compulsory purchase. For four or five years the spectre of future trouble loomed over them, resulting in ill health and money worries that took their toll. The foundations of the exclusive new homes of the many were built upon the heartbreak of the few. The County Council, although claiming to be fair and sympathetic, paid out such paltry sums that it was impossible for most families to buy even a small basic dwelling and many had to take on unwanted mortgages at an advanced stage in their lives. In other neighbourhoods shrewd developers were busy purchasing older-type houses in large plots and so the whole face of the area became changed beyond all recognition. One imposing house near the railway station was demolished in 1965. Formerly known as 'The Bungalow' and then renamed 'Simon's Lodge', it was the home of tick-tack bookmaker Mr Barton. The garden of the house was noted for its fine display of spring bulbs, especially daffodils. In June, 1977, building fever came to Woodham. There were four plots of land for sale in Hullbridge Road. This land was being sold by Essex County Council. The lots were approximately one fifth of an acre and selling for six thousand, seven hundred and fifty pounds. A newspaper report says that one family queued for three days, the family working in shifts and sleeping in their cars at night. I wonder if the occupants now living in the prestigious house in Hullbridge Road know of its early history. Many strange things have been done to produce a living income but not many families can boast that their home was at one time the abode of countless domestic fowls. This particular house had been inherited from a local personage and the beneficiary discovered that it was more profitable to fill it with chickens than to lease it out. One dangerous, although exciting pastime was practiced by the youth of the village. Gangs of three or four boys would play at 'double your money'. This was in the days when L.s.d. meant pounds, shillings and pence and not some hallucinatory drug. The object of the game was to turn old-fashioned halfpennies into pennies. To do this they needed to be squashed under intense pressure and what better method than placing them on the railway track and waiting for the next train to come along. The resulting coinage was then taken into nearby shops and if the proprietor didn't keep his eyes skinned you were in luck. Sometimes the plan backfired and the original stake was lost or so misshapen that it proved worthless. In December, 1992, a rare barred warbler was seen in Asda car park. This bird usually winters in North Africa, so many keen birdwatchers gathered here hoping to see it. However, by the time that most of them had arrived it was too late as the unfortunate bird had been caught and eaten by a local cat. In the 1950's a workman found a Roman coin in a field along the Old Woodham Road. This was discovered without the use of a metal detector and at the time it was considered an important discovery as there does not seem to be much evidence of Roman occupation hereabouts.

Hear about our proposals for local NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups

Following the launch of a discussion document inviting feedback on the proposals for NHS clinical commissioning groups (CCG) in mid and south Essex to come together, there are three opportunities for people living in Braintree District, Chelmsford City and Maldon District to learn more and ask questions about the plans. NHS Mid Essex CCG will be running a public drop-in session in each of the three local authority areas it serves, and everyone is welcome to attend. The events offer a chance for senior figures at the CCG to listen to local ideas, thoughts and concerns. We will be using the feedback we get from residents to help us understand what matters to people in mid Essex people and give them the opportunity to ask any questions they might have about the proposed changes and why we are planning to make them. The events take place at: • Braintree Town Hall, Market Square, Braintree, Thursday 19 March, 3pm-6pm • Maldon Town Council, Market Hill, Maldon, Wednesday 25 March, 3pm-6pm Dan Doherty, Deputy Accountable Officer at Mid Essex CCG, said: “We hope to see many of our residents at these drop-ins, so we can hear from them how we, as the part of the local NHS that plans, buys and monitors most of your NHS services, can meet the requirements set out in the 2019 NHS Long Term Plan. It’s a great chance for us to discuss what you think NHS organisations working more closely together could bring to our area.” The discussion document is called “Working Together for Mid and South Essex – Share your views on how NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups are proposing to work together” and is available on the CCG website, along with ways you can give us your views if you’re unable to make any of the drop-in events.

Last week, we were lucky enough to have Vikki join us from JTD Performing Arts, who took us through our paces with some street dance for the love yourself clause.

This week, as some of you may have seen, we have been out dropping off some flowers to people’s doorsteps as random acts of kindness. This worked towards the Love the Community clause and also coincides with our Promise and Brownie Guide Law…. A Brownie Guide thinks of others before herself and does a good turn every day. I would like to thank Meadow Croft Garden Centre for kindly donating the flowers to us which enabled us this carry out this activity and spread some love. We hope that you enjoyed receiving them as much as we enjoyed delivering them.

In 1955, we had breakfast, dinner and tea. Three "square" meals a day. In 1999 there are brunches and lunches and dinner instead of tea. We eat at all times in the day. The meal on Sunday, between one and two pm was known as Sunday dinner. A roast - lamb, pork or beef, with roast potatoes and vegetables in season (usually home grown from the garden or allotment). The Sunday dinner had all the trimmings - mint sauce with lamb - made from mint from the garden. With beef we had Yorkshire pudding and horseradish sauce, again made from horseradish from the garden. With pork we had homemade apple sauce from homegrown apples. We rarely had chicken - that was saved for high days and holidays. Sunday dinner took all morning to prepare and cook. There was always a pudding (or dessert!), usually a fruit pie or crumble with custard - the pastry had to be made and the fruit prepared. And gravy made with bisto and cornflour, with juice from the roast meat - REAL GRAVY. The whole family sat down together to eat; usually after Dad, together with any boys in the family, had done some gardening, including taking fresh vegetables into the house for dinner. Or, if they owned one - cleaned the car. Any daughters would help Mum - that is how we learned to garden and cook. There was always enough meat left from the joint (it was never boned!!) for cold meat, mashed potatoes and homemade pickles and chutneys on Monday - Mum did not have to cook much, as Monday was wash day and it took all day with boilers and mangles. If you were really lucky, you had just enough to make a shepherd's pie on Tuesday. For tea there would be dripping toast - the juices from the roast meat would set (like jelly) and was lovely spread on toast - especially if done by an open fire. In 1955 we used dripping for roasting - we had not heard of cholesterol!! Shopping was done nearly every day. In the local parade of shops you had bakers, green grocers, butchers and grocers. There was always a post office/paper/sweet shop - don't forget some things were still on ration. These shops were within walking distance and had half day closing, usually Wednesdays, and were never open

FOCUS Issue 947

Over to you... Neighbourhood plan Getting straight to the point the Neighbourhood Plan gives me the impression that South Woodham Ferrers should be bulldozed to the ground and started again. At present we are told we have narrow streets laid out to produce convoluted journeys, alley ways that are not overlooked, blank gable walls, visitors are greeted by car parks (although this will soon be changing to KFC!), areas need ‘opening up’, traffic travels too fast and car parking takes up a lot of space in the central area. Instead we apparently need connection to the northern development by wide avenues for walking, cycling together with ‘play streets’ (very appropriate for an ageing population – cl. 2.6) and no doubt, to quote John Cleese, we will have herds of wildebeest grazing. So the conclusion seems to be we’ll need to start again or at least embark on extensive demolition and re-building. Rather amazingly the Plan has one sentence that acknowledges extensive development to the east of the Town. There are only two main routes for traffic travelling west in the area and they are though Steeple-Maylandsea – Danbury or North Fambridge – South Woodham Ferrers. I assume traffic heading for the A127 or A13 will take the Burnham Road route and traffic for Chelmsford the Danbury route. In any event it should be as plain as day that there will be a great increase in traffic from the east as well as that generated by the proposed development North of the Town. A northern bypass is dismissed on the grounds of cost but we already have, or rather had, Burnham Road that served this purpose albeit with ever increasing difficulty but more of that later. For reasons beyond comprehension the Plan advocates the need to make Burnham Road narrower with several crossing points to slow traffic down, i.e. downgrading it to a street. Has anyone seen the size of the lorries that use this road, more than once I have come well within corona virus catching range of a large lorry trying to negotiate the roundabout at Hullbridge Road. I learnt a long time ago that at car engine was at its most efficient at a speed of 56 m.p.h. and the computer in my car seems to confirm this. Therefore efficient fuel use will reduce emissions but the plan is to reduce speeds so stop/start and low gear driving will be required greatly increasing pollution – not good news at all for Woodville School. I have the ‘pleasure’ of walking a child to school in Brentwood and the traffic fumes encountered due to stationary/slow moving traffic are dreadful and the proposals for development north of the Town will result in the Shaw Farm roundabout becoming a potential Wilsons Corner further exacerbating harmful emissions round the top of the Town and beyond. On a further health point, there is a nice picture of an electricity pylon in the Plan but what are the health hazards regarding the overhead power cables – no mention is made in the report. Absolutely no development must be undertaken until the Burnham and New Wickford roads have been improved to comfortably accommodate traffic passing along this route. To the majority of residents this is obvious but there are those, particularly those who do not live in the area, do not care and hide behind unaccountability, who do not appreciate this essential need. With regard to car parking it is natural that car owners like to have their vehicle to be visible especially as there are very sparse police patrols and this has resulted in increased street parking in narrow, winding streets and often on pavements so I do not see how this can easily be overcome but see first sentence! The comment is made about car journeys being replaced with cycling and walking but what bright spark elected to build a medical centre away from the centre of town and to the north side of a busy road. Dr. Cormack has demonstrated that there were sensible alternatives for medical care, but that is the problem sensibility does not count

for very much these days. No matter however hard anyone tries cars will be used extensively in the town, e.g. transporting children to and from school – particularly in bad weather. The elderly will also need transport to the medical centre or will there be a bicycle scheme as in London that will enable the patients to use the cycle routes? Isn’t it ironic that a new primary school is being contemplated and Chetwood School was closed down? The Plan mentions a meeting in 2008 between the City Council and the South Woodham Ferrers Town Council – the results from that meeting have gone well haven’t they!? The vast majority of the Town acknowledge that it is the influence of Asda that has suppressed much needed and varied shops in the town centre. Promising shops have appeared over the years only for Asda to suddenly sell items in the same range forcing the shops to close and the supermarket then often discontinuing selling the items. It can be of no coincidence that Alistair Black and hairdressers have survived – Asda do not cover their merchandize – yet! Many people, including myself, moved here many years ago with the promise of great things that have never materialized but have watched a town in decline and surely with regard to the ‘progress’ achieved since the 2008 meeting the town of South Woodham Ferrers will regard the Neighbourhood Plan with a great deal of cynicism not to mention disbelief - Burnham Road demoted to a street?...really!! Finally, clause 10.4 mentions a referendum and what will happen if 50% are in favour but not if more than 50% are not in favour. I think the answer will be rather like the Remainers and Brexit and we will be considered ill informed, thick and stupid, after all we only live here.

Local History Society – Future Meetings

Following all the advice available, and in line with guidelines of social distancing and self quarantine, it is with regret that the South Woodham Ferrers Local History Society has had to take the decision to cancel its meetings until it seems safe to resume public gatherings. The first casualty of this decision is the previously advertised talk on ‘Essex Churches’ by Dr David Andrews. It is hoped that this, together with the following month’s talk ‘Barges on the Blackwater’ by Stephen Nunn, can be rescheduled into one of the Society’s future programmes.

SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS UTD V TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Bella stepped into the goal mouth confidently (although she will tell you she was shaking like a leaf) and was ready to face the first striker. The girl stepped up to the ball and missed completely. Then it was Ruby’s turn… with composure and strength she fired it into the goal to go 1 up. The next Spartak stepped forward, striking the ball but Bella was there and made a fantastic save to the roar of the crowd. Rosie took the next penalty, but the keeper made a save to keep Baddow in the game. The next two penalties were scored; Georgia confidently placing the ball in the bottom right corner. The fourth penalty was crucial, and the Redcats knew if this was saved and they scored the game would be over. Spartak placed the ball on the penalty spot, stepped up to strike the ball and everyone held their breath… Saved by a strong hand tipping it over the bar! The crowd let out an almighty cheer. Now it was down to Evie. She calmly placed the ball and took the penalty. With the cleanest of strikes the ball was in the back of the net like a bullet and the match was won. What an amazing effort from Abbie, Bella, Bethany, Casey, Evie, Georgia, Jess, Kassia, Liv, Neive, Rosie and Ruby! You’d be hard pressed to see another semi-final like this! The atmosphere was tense and the girls showed undeniable talent today, making the club and the parents incredibly proud. The reward for the girls is a thrilling final v Tottenham Hotspur!

U12 REDCATS V BADDOW SPARTAK LEAGUE CUP SEMI FINAL SPECIAL REPORTFrom the outset, Redcats had control of the ball and the game. They were strong in every tackle, winning the ball and pressing it forward to keep Spartak under constant pressure. With a dangerously fast Rosie on the wing, Georgia and Ruby could get into instant attack mode, testing the keeper at every opportunity. With the crowd cheering, shot after shot was fired at their keeper, but if it didn’t hit the post it was just palmed wide. With heads up, the girls kept lookingto move the ball around the pitch; Liv and Neive displayed excellent defensive intelligence, and were quick to close any attack down. With Bella’s safe hands, there was no question of conceding a goal.Going into the second half, still at nil:nil, the girls knew they needed to find an elusive goal. Ruby and Evie’s teamwork saw the ball, yet again, kept in the opposition’s half. With Abbie’s amazingly long throw-ins, we kept surprising Baddow, and Kassia was always there supporting and terrifying their wingers. Pressure kept building, and the pace of the game stepped up another gear. When the final whistle went, it was hard to believe that a goal hadn’t been scored. Now to face the dreaded extra-time and the threat of penalties to ensure a result; the girls stepped onto the pitch, knowing exactly what they had to do. Again, the ball was camped in the opposition’s half, with Manos shouting ‘Lovely Jubbly!’. The whistle blew, then it was on to penalties!

Billericay v South Woodham U13

A surprisingly bright and sunny day greeted the travelling South Woodham U13 team to stock road, home of our friends, Billericay Rugby club. Some of you might remember that earlier in the season we played Billericay. Their first guise, a joint team effort with Brentwood, the second, a largely new blooded team. Both games were dominant displays and proved to be our highest points tally so far. This game proved to be a little bit different. From the off our boys were kicking into the wind and the new blood Billericay have attracted from Chelmsford, 10 new players in total apparently, proved a much heartier challenge this time around. The first blood went to the much-improved home team. Turning over a kick into their own half, the Billericay number 6 exposed a gap down our right-hand side and slotted home. 1-0 Billericay. What came next was a fabulously spirited performance where the boys dusted themselves off, switched their game heads on and went straight at Billericay. Some great tackling from Hayden, James, Thomas and James H let the home team know that they were in for a battle and helped set the scene for some great play. Billericay almost caught Woodham off guard only for Nathan D to perform a stunning last ditch tackle, with Jack B rucking over the ball and pushing back to win us the right to play. A scrum well distributed by young George to front row debut George C pushed Billericay back and a wonderful offload to Noah W, who is always In the mood, helped Woodham back into the game. Another try from Noah soon after and its 1-2. Alfie and Lukian worked well together in the centre of the pitch and made some hugely important gains. It was nice seeing Nathan exploit the space and a tasty offload to Dan, who fended off 3 players, pushed Woodham to 1-3. Billericay got a try back from a penalty and at half time the scoreboard read 2-3 in Woodhams favour. A change at Full back, with Ewan joining the fray, and an ever-improving Alfie offering a wonderful offload to Dan who touched down for 2-4. A great passage of play from a Woodham scrum saw young Tom receive a lovely pass from Noah, draw 2 players, pass back to Noah, with a pop pass up for Big Joe and its 2-5. Some great rucking and ball carrying from man of the match winner Lukian helped Woodham forward once more, with the new Billericay players tackling hard and proving a real handful at the breakdown.

James Skelt provided a lovely pass for Noah to run dead centre down the pitch and touch down. A switch to an uncontested scrum saw the impressive Billericay No 6 push and go down the right hand side and touch down however this was soon followed by second row enforcer Jack bundling over the line and Woodham 3-7 up. Dan completed a Hat trick of tries with some intelligent play at the break down and the final score was 3-8 for Woodham. Our friends at Billericay have really come on from the last meeting and the Woodham boys all knew they were in a game straight from the off. They battled and fought for every inch, let alone try, and we’re delighted not only in our own boys development, but also to see a Billericay side previously struggling for numbers earlier in the season improve even more. A great game played by two continuously developing sides in the right spirit. Man of the match – Lukian SWF RFC U10's at Stanford 7 of the Woodham squad turned up for an away game against Stanford. They had their 13 players available, so gave us three players. We played 9 –a-side. The Woodham squad was Brad, Ellis, Keith, Luca, Luke, Noah and Tom. Tom was making his first appearance for the team and did very well. We played two games, and managed to run in some short and long distance tries. Our commitment at the breakdown was good, but our work ons for future training and games remains first up tackling, as it was often a little high, and limited to some of the team. As we had tried to do the previous week, move the ball out of the contact area and use the width as all of our players are comfortable on the ball and have good hands – this seemed to go out of the window this week as we boldly went forward as individual runners. With nine men on the pitch it was tight, and we narrowed the game even more. There was plenty of effort and some good turnovers. Ellis was key in much of this. Luca broke a number of tackles to go through and score a few times. Luke again was fearless in running hard at the opposition with the ball. If you want to play rugby, contact Gerry on 07880 498565.

U16’s v Campion Semi Final Cup This week Woodham were due to host Campion in the Semi Final of the cup. Due to poor pitches the fixture was swapped and Campion hosted Woodham. Campion kicked off the match and Woodham took the game straight into the hosts half. A strong defence but determination from Woodham finally saw the first try of the game on 9 minutes. The conversion good, Woodham were in a good starting position 7 – 0. The Campion pack started to dominate Woodham at the scrum and the visitors pushed deep into the visitor’s half. A strong defence from Woodham held up the attack and pushed the hosts back to half way. However, Campion were not done and on 27 minutes they saw the fruits of their labour crossing for their first try. Conversion was missed 7 – 5 to Woodham. Campion again pushed hard from the restart and just 3 minutes later crossed again. This time the conversion was good and the score remaining unchanged at the end of the half was no 7 – 12 to the hosts. Campion came back out in the second half with the advantage of the wind and pitch. Woodham worked hard, but had to drop to 14 men for 5 minutes through injury and assessment of players. Campion took advantage of the extra player, scoring on 40 and 43 minutes. Neither conversion completed it was now 7 – 22. Woodham pushed hard into the hosts half but a strong defence from Campion kept them at bay. The hosts then broke free to score their last of the game and this time the conversion was good. 7 – 29. Woodham wouldn’t give up without a fight. A well worked attack from the forwards pushed Woodham to within 10m of the Campion line. The defence holding strong, Woodham continued to chip away. Eventually they found the gap through Jake, and Rhino completed the conversion 14 – 29. Both sides were now starting to tire, after a physical but well contested game. However, Woodham would draw blood one final time just before the final whistle through Sam for his brace, with the closing score 21 -29 to Campion. Great spirit shown by the whole team, with mentions from the opposition Coaches for Gerrard, Jay and Sam. Man of the Match chosen by the Woodham coaches went to Sam. U15’s v Clacton Semi Final Cup A great effort by both teams today when SWF scored the first try I thought ok that’s fine but Clacton just came back and pushed our boys as hard as they could they never gave us a second on the ball and seemed as quick as we were to the rucks and mauls, their defence was as good as ours and we couldn’t get around them on the wings as we usually do to other teams and handling errors faulted both teams and we had gone behind but just before half time we drew level with a converted try and at half time it was all square (12-12) and my heart was in my mouth. Whatever was said at half time it worked as SWF came out and dominated the game all of a sudden we were quicker the hands were working better and the ball was moving about the field and our forwards were securing the ball allowing our backs to work their way into the game, as we scored the first try of the half you could see that SWF had switched on in a big way and shifted up a gear Clacton were still playing well but SWF then run in a second try and then a third unanswered try by now Clacton’s heads had dropped a bit and SWF we’re flying and they run in 5 try’s in the second half finishing up 41-12 winners. The boys did them self’s and the club proud today and I’d like to thank everyone that came along and supported them this win means a lot to these boys and I for one are very proud of the effort every one of them put in, every player put in a shift, well done. This now puts SWF into the finals of the Essex Waterfall cup and we have now found out that we will play Westcliff RFC in the final if it goes ahead let’s hope it does.

Burnham Table Tennis League - Press Report week ended 13 Mar 2020 New Funfair Ride for West Maldon It’s been a proper ‘rollercoaster’ week for the West Maldon Club this week as their B team succumbed to the pressures of Division 1 as relegation was confirmed following their 8-2 defeat at Cold Norton B. However to counteract this disappointment it looks like the West Maldon C team may have done just enough to retain its position within Division 2, and they look likely to be joined by West Maldon D as they leapt into second place in Division 3 with an emphatic 9-1 win over their only real rivals for the promotion spot. What a week!

Division 1 – Harry Keys unlocks Woodham’s Defence A bit like Liverpool FC and the Premiership, Fambridge are just one game away from mathematically securing the Burnham Division 1 crown, so they are praying that the next round of matches will be permitted to take place. This week the Fambridge trio scored a very straightforward 10-0 victory over a well fielded Stow A side. West Maldon A are the only team that can catch Fambridge but they pretty much need full points from all their matches to do so – so they would have been disappointed with a close 6-4 win away at Woodham A this week. West Maldon’s Harry Keys maintained his 100% Burnham record this season – but only just as the in-form Lee McHugh took him to a tense final set that saw Keys’ more measured style win out against the fast looping McHugh. McHugh had already defeated current Singles Champion Daniel Young in another fiver setter that saw the best forehand versus the best backhand go all the way. Keys and Young combined to win the all-important doubles. A Charles Sweeny inspired Mapledene A romped home 8-2 against a 2-man Stow A side, with Stow’s Jon Stokes taking both his teams points. Dan Anderson and Eric Green went unbeaten all night in Cold Norton’s 8-2 triumph over newly relegated West Maldon B, whilst the boys from the bottom team Stow B had an enjoyable night out as they forced a draw with Mapledene B. Mapledene’s Ian Rattray was the star turn with a hard-earned hat-trick, but all the Stow players picked up points with Dave Marsh and Peter Chastin both recording a brace of wins. Division 2 – Meah Culpa Favourites Mapledene C had a storming week as they blasted Maldon D 10-0 to go back to the top of the table on 120 points – with a couple of games in hand it would take a miracle for any of the chasing pack to thwart their charge back to Division 1. The runner-up battle is heating up with the two Maldon clubs fighting it out with just 3 points separating them with just two games each to play. Mayland A have dropped back a wee bit in the last couple of weeks and their unexpected draw against Cold Norton C this week hasn’t helped their cause. Mayland’s Steve Aspland was in fine form winning all his singles and combining with Colin Barrell for the doubles. But it was the unexpected form of Cold Norton’s Peter Lucraft and Dave Hancox that turned the match around as they both defeated Ralph Gibson and Colin Barrell – good scalps indeed! Colin Napper was back on form for Maldon

B as they overcame West Maldon C with an 8-2 scoreline – Napper bagged his hat-trick of wins including a 4 set victory over West Maldon’s best player Victor Chan. Maldon C had the form of Thomas Page to thank for their 7-3 away win at Blackwater A. Everyone in this match registered at least one point, which is not surprising given the array of styles and bats on show. Page took his hat-trick but only just as he squeezed home 12,-8,-10,11,9 against the stoic Denis Balic. Blackwater’s Simon Quelch scored a notable win over the very talented Mark Shorney. The 7-3 win for Woodham B in their derby encounter with Woodham C wasn’t a surprise but the player of the match was. Young David Meah defeated all 3 of the Woodham B players in long 5 setters which gives him the accolade of performance of the week across all the divisions. The Woodham B trio of George Ashley, Eamonn Hall and Sanjay Saptarshi all recorded 2 victories and Ashley and Saptarshi combined for the doubles. Division 3 – West Maldon Destroyers In the most anticipated match of the week the formbook was tossed out of the window as West Maldon C destroyed Woodham D, their closest and only real rivals for the coveted runner-up spot in Division 3. The scoreline was 9-1 but apart from the one victory by Woodham’s Mike ‘Chopper’ Burton the games were all pretty quick and one-sided with only David Sage’s win over Richard Stevens going beyond the minimum 3 sets. Both Noah Sage and Gary Smith recorded perfect hat-tricks and combined for a 3-0 win in the doubles too – some performance. Blackwater B were able to beat Mayland B 7-3 – but none of the Blackwaterites were able to get close to Mayland’s Jon Stevens as he hit a perfect hat-trick for his team’s 3 points. The remaining two matches both ended in stalemate. Tina Hutchinson was the star player in the Stow E versus Burnham A shootout. Hutchinson recorded her hat-trick that included a fine 5 set triumph over Burnham’s Michael Pratley. In the 5-all encounter betwixt St Lawrence A and Stow F it was Anne Mills who starred as she won all her singles but was then surprisingly ‘rested’ for the doubles which her team failed to win. Phil Jenkins was the best of the St Lawrence team winning 2 of his singles and combining with Jacqui Treacy for the doubles.
