Free Knitting Pattern
Ear Flap Baby Hat
Garter Stitch Baby Cardigan with Ear Flap Hat
Size: 3-9 months (it's stretchy)
Gauge: 4 - 5 sts/inch in St st. (Sample was knit at 5 sts/inch, but it's
not crucial as babies grow so quickly.)
Materials: Worsted weight yarn, 2 oz
Size 4-7 (US) needles, short circulars or double pointed. You
can use whatever
type needles you prefer for working in the round though.
7 Stitch markers or scraps of yarn for this purpose.
Crochet hook to pick up stitches if you use one.
Tapestry needle
PATTERN:
HAT: This is the plain, stockinette and seed stitch version. Hat in
photo was embellished with the two-color, slip stitch pattern to
match the sweater.
2
CO 71 sts [if you are going to adjust this, just make sure it's an odd
number so the seed st works out, and preferably a multiple of 7 (+1
extra st if your multiple is an even number).]. Join and place a
marker to note the beginning of your row - be sure to slip the
marker every row.
Work even in seed st (*k1, p1, cont. from * around and around) for
1".
Next row: Work one round in St st (knit every stitch), but k2tog
once somewhere in the row - anywhere that makes you happy to do
so.
Work even in St St for 3.5" (from the beginning of St St, not from
the beginning of the hat!). Place a marker every 10 sts on your last
row.
Decrease Rows:
Row 1 - K2tog before each marker (knit even in between). 63 sts
on needle(s).
Row 2 - K every stitch.
Row 3 - SSK before every stitch marker (knit even in between). 56
sts on needle(s).
Row 4 - K every stitch.
Row 5 - K2tog before each marker (knit even in between). 49 sts
on needle(s).
Row 6 - K every stitch.
Row 7 - SSK before every stitch marker (knit even in between). 42
sts on needles.
Row 8 - K2tog before each marker (knit even in between). 35 sts
on needles.
Row 9 - SSK before every stitch marker (knit even in between). 28
sts on needles.
Row 10 - K2tog before each marker (knit even in between). 21 sts
on needles.
Row 11 - SSK before every stitch marker (knit even in between).
14 sts on needles.
Row 12 - K2tog before each marker (knit even in between). 7 sts
on needles.
Break yarn and draw the tail through the 7 sts (I use a tapestry
needle for this.) and to the inside of the hat. Pull tight and secure.
Weave in end.
EARFLAPS
3
Pick up 11 sts. at the bottom edge of your hat (You might want to
place one ear flap so that the circle join lies in the center of it so it's
hidden.).
Work 3 rows even on the 11 sts in seed st (K first and last st of
every row for a nicer edge).
Row 4: K1, K2tog, seed to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 (9 sts on needle)
Row 5: K1, Seed even to last st, K1
Row 6: K1, K2tog, seed to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 (7 sts on needle)
Row 7: K1, Seed even to last st, K1
Row 8: K1, K2tog, seed to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 (5 sts on needle)
Row 9: K1, Seed even to last st, K1
Row 10: K2tog, P1, K2tog (3 sts on needle)
Use the last 3 sts to make an i-cord tie by knitting across the three
then, without turning, slide the 3 to the other side of the needle and
pulling the yarn across the back tightly, knit across. Continue doing
this until you reach the desired length (10").
When you get it as long as you want, break the yarn and draw the
end through the sts. Fasten the yarn and then, using your tapestry
needle, pull the yarn up through the cord then out the side, an inch
or two up, cut it off then pull on the end of the cord to draw the
yarn to the inside.
Complete the other ear flap in the same way, placing it 24 sts away
from the edge of the first one.
Single crochet completely around the brim and ear flaps, for a
finished look.
Weave in any loose ends.
