WELCOME TO THE ST ALBANS SUSTAINABILITY FESTIVAL11TH MAY - 1STJUNE
In this programme you will find 100+ events –something for everyone!
What’s it all about? SustFest is fun but serious too. It is run by 160+ groups; community, business, schools and faith - with a single aim to make our district more environmentally sustainable.
Through choices we make in our everyday life we are destroying natural habitats, choking the oceans with plastic, decimating wildlife and causing devastating changes to the climate. The recent IPCC report said that humanity has 11 years to take emergency action to prevent disastrous global warming.
We are all part of the problem, so we all need to be part of the solution.
So, we hope you’ll take part in SustFest events. Have fun, get information and - most importantly – be inspired to make changes and live more sustainably. Be a Climate Hero.
LOOK INSIDE: THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
Be inspired, get informedTalks and tours, walks and bike rides, films and food. Learn about transport, buildings, fashion, and nature. Whatever you love, you’ll find it here.
Want to involve the kids? How about the Herts County Show (p33), EcoEd games (p44), adventures (p15 + 16), Story Tent (p11 + 13). Enjoy half-term with hedgehogs (p38) or recycle with crafty cafe (p38).
Want to muck-in? Why not come and grow with FoodSmiles (p5, 8 + 33), join a litter pick (p5, 14, 20 + 22), or go river-dipping at Batford Springs (p38).
Looking for special offers?Turn to the back for all the events running throughout the festival (p44) and special offers on sustainable living, with money-off local produce, plastic-free living and cafes.
Get involved at homeBe a Climate Hero and tackle your own carbon footprint. Sign the Climate Emergency petition to make your voice heard (p18 + 19).
Can’t find what you’re looking for?Turn to the back pages for a quick view of everything happening in ‘Events at a Glance’.

MONDAY 20TH MAY
If we all save a little, we all save a lot.
In St Albans each person, on average, uses around 154 litres of water per day. To help the local environment, we want to support people to cut this to 129 litres per day. The good news is that saving water is easy, and can save you time,
energy and money too.
Did you know St Albans gets about the same amount of rainfall
as Melbourne, Australia?
If we all save a little, we all save a lot...
Shorten your shower
Aim for 4 minutes. Order a free shower timer online, visit: www.affinitywater.co.uk/
savewater
Don’t rush to flushToilets use about 8 – 13
litres per flush. Use the little button on dual flush toilets
when you can, consider sharing a flush too.
Turn the tap off when brushingThis saves 6 litres of
water per minute – nowthere’s something
to smile about.
Air your clothes if they’re not dirtyIf they need washing, wait until you have a full load
and wash on 30°C.
Wash up wiselyUse a bowl to do the dishes.
Make the most of your dishwasher – stack it full and use the eco-setting.
Keen gardener? Choose drought-resistant
plants that are less likely to wilt when weather turns dry
and warm. You’ll spend less time watering too.
For more simple water saving tips follow #TapChat across social media, or pop by the #TapChat exhibition at St Albans Museum + Gallery on 18-23 May.
Book a free Home Visit (value £80) to receive free products and support with saving water that’s right for you. Book yours today:

SustFest is led by volunteers from Sustainable St Albans and St Albans Friends of the Earth. It happens because of the support of our funders, sponsors and those who have given us gifts in kind. We have received grants from the locality budgets of county councillors Cllr John Hale, Cllr Anthony Rowlands, Cllr Sandy Walkington, and Cllr Chris White. We also received personal donations from people who asked not to be named; you know who you are, and thank you.
Thank you to the volunteers who helped in so many ways, with all aspects of the Festival, market stalls and events. An enormous thank you to all the groups in this programme who have planned and run events and activities. There would – quite literally – be no festival without you.
Thank you to our organising group – Lesley Flowers, Heather Foster, Gail Jackson, Susheel Rao, Catherine Ross (Chair), Craig Scudder, Sheila Wright, Nicola Wyeth, and Amanda Yorwerth. Thanks also to our families, who put up with our obsession and exhaustion, as we try to deliver this crazy ambitious thing in our spare time, hoping that our efforts make some contribution towards a planet that survives.
Compiled and edited by Gail Jackson, Susheel Rao and Catherine Ross. Graphic Design: White, Nicola Kevin. Printed on recycled paper by PrintShop St Albans. Copyright: St Albans Sustainability Festival 2019.Events falling under the banner of Sustainability are broad and varied. Some of them may be controversial.
The views expressed at these events may not be those of the organisers of St Albans Sustainability Festival.
THANK YOU
Friends of the Earth is dedicated to the wellbeing and protection of the natural world and everything in it. The St Albans group works on air pollution, bee-friendly actions and other local campaigns.www.stalbansfoe.org
As volunteers we find positive, creative ways to raise awareness, address the challenges of climate change, live more sustainably and move towards a low-carbon economy.www.sustainablestalbans.org
