Welcome to the January issue. With Christmas behind us (just), the new year and the London Boat Show await. If you happen to be in the market for a new 60 footer, you will be spoilt for choice, with the Prestige 630, Sunseeker 68 Sport Yacht, Sunseeker Manhattan 66 and the Princess S60 all being unveiled. If your sights are not set quite that high, there are still some great new boats to see. The
new Greenline 36 will be making its first appearance, as will the outboard powered Rodman Spirit 31, the Cobra 9.5m RIB and the affordable little electric powered day boat, the Rand Picnic Sport. If you missed it at Southampton, then try to take in the Cormate U23 Pro, a cabin boat that with the right engine can hit speeds in excess of 70 knots. We’ll be at London everyday, so if you see us please do stop us for a chat.
If your buying power doesn’t extend to new, and you are going to be spending the spring scouring the used boat market, we have the first of a new four-part feature that is just for you. Our ‘Used Boat Self Survey’ guide will take you through what to look for when hunting for a secondhand boat, and how to spot a gem from a lemon. We also have two great used boat buys this month at different ends of the market. The Broom 42/425 is a fantastic extended cruising boat with accommodation to die for, and we look at an affordable and economical 25ft Glastron sportscruiser, in homage of the return of this iconic brand to the UK market. The GS259 may not be a levee jumping GT150, but Roger Moore didn’t have the luxury of a galley, separate toilet compartment and frugal diesel engine.Happy New Year

Window rubber can degrade and become brittle, plastic can be scratched
and crazed. Moss growth can cause
leaks, and copious use of sealant could
indicate poorly fixed leaks
Older boats often suffer from problems
with the windows, hatches and portholes. Metal frames can corrode,
wooden frames can rot, seals can shrink
and plastic windows can craze and
crack. Leaks are an obvious problem
to check for. Look for badly applied
sealant externally, as this is a sure sign
that a previous owner was trying to
cure a leak, and is likely to have been
unsuccessful. Most window problems
can be fixed quite easily, by fitting
new seals for example, but for bigger
problems they may require removal,
overhaul and refitting. Sometimes
problems can be caused by lack of care
and simply fixed by clearing moss away
from the channels and drains.
Cockpits and flybridges
Windows hatches and ports
The first thing to look at here is the canvas work that covers these
areas. Are they free from tears and
damage? Is the stitching holding together OK? Do all of the zips
work? Are all of the windows clear and free from damage? Most
importantly, does the canvas still fit? As they age, canvas covers
and canopies shrink to the point where they become impossible
to correctly fix in place. At this point the canopy is likely to need
replacement and, depending upon

or most of us, a used boat purchase
represents the second largest purchase
we are likely to make. Even a modest
boat is a serious outlay when you are on
a modest income. It would be prudent,
therefore, to take great care over the
purchase and allow your head to overrule
your heart when it comes to decision
making. We would always recommend
getting a professional survey carried out
on any potential purchase that represents
a significant outlay. Where you draw the
line will depend upon how risk averse
you are, but once the boats purchase price
reaches a few thousand, it pays to spend
a few hundred having it looked over by
someone who knows what to look for.
Having said that, when you are in the
market, those survey fees could start to
pile up if you get one carried out on every
boat that takes your fancy, especially when
some of these boats will have enough
issues that you subsequently decide to
walk away. In this case the survey fee

This coming January the 63rd, 10-day London Boat Show will be kicking off the 2017 boating season at ExCeL in east London. On display in ExCel’s South Hall will be an array of boats, marine services, chandlery and the latest in equipment, as well as show features.
31. The original Spirit 31 is powered by an inboard diesel. However, outboard power has resulted in a revised layout with a second midships double cabin. The Spirit 31 Outboard is priced from £124,800 and will be showcased by UK Rodman dealer, RBS Marine on stand B190C. Another interesting new boat at the show will be the Greenline Hybrid 36, which is priced from £273,248. The new model bridges the gap between the two models, the 33 and 40, and combines a diesel inboard engine with electric propulsion. The 36 will be on display at stand A300A through UK dealer, Inspiration Marine. Other debuts include the Prestige 630, Sunseeker International’s 68 Sport Yacht and Manhattan 66, Princess S60, RAND Picnic
A new show feature will be a ‘Dream Lodge Marina and Boating Lake’, a pool with a selection of boats afloat, fringed with places to eat and drink. Opposite this will be a ‘Watersports Park’ where visitors can try out and see some of the latest watersports trends. Other features such as Bumper Boats and Titan The Robot are sure to provide some family fun. On the show’s stage there will be live entertainment with musical performances, fashion shows, and Sky Sports Presenter, Alec Wilkinson, hosting interviews and expert talks. The 2017 show will see the usual showcase of debut products and new boats. Among the new boats will be Rodman’s new outboard-powered Spirit
Sport, Grandezza 25 S, Bayliner Elements E7 and CC7, and finally the Cobra 9.5m. The event opens on 6th of January from 10am-6pm daily, with a 8pm late night on Thursday. Advance tickets can be purchased here. You can see a preview video, which includes highlights from the 2016 show, here. Find out more at londonboatshow.com.

In early December, the RYA released a short ‘festive’ video to highlight the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning on boats. The RYA said ‘In the UK alone each year around 40 people die and over 4,000 are injured as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. The MAIB has investigated three double-fatalities due to carbon monoxide on boats since 2013, in North Yorkshire, the Lake District and Norfolk. An investigation is also underway after a man was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in Cardiff onboard a privately-owned cabin cruiser just last month.’ The safety video is aimed at reducing incidents, fatalities and ill health related to the poisonous gas, and therefore carries a stark message, as well as showcasing the latest craze, the Mannequin Challenge. You can see the video via the RYA’s YouTube channel here. The message states “Be Alarmed...Stay Safe this Winter”.

Sealine has announced its new C530, ‘a topless, sporty cabrio of the sea’. This sleek hardtop sportscruiser will be fitted with twin Volvo Penta IPS 600, 700 or 800 engines, giving top speeds of 26-34 knots. Built in Germany and part of the HanseGroup, the model is a development of the recent F530, which made its UK debut at the Southampton Boat Show. The interior of the wheelhouse and cockpit benefits from a ‘multifunctional roof structure’, which incorporates an opening roof forward and aft cockpit, protected by a wide opening sunroof. Below decks the three-cabin layout offers accommodation for 6 people, with a full width master ensuite cabin with large hull windows at sea level, a forward double cabin and a third side cabin with optional single beds or a double. Other features include a hydraulically lowering pool deck, capable of carrying tenders up to 3.20 metres. The base price of the C530 is €569,950. The C530 will debut in Germany at the Dusseldorf Boat Show, Boot, in January (Hall 5 Stand 5D22). UK Sealine dealers are TBS Boats, Shepherds Marine and Norfolk Boat Sales.

Four new Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) have been designated in the Northern Ireland Inshore Region by the Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), Marine and Fisheries Division. These are Belfast Lough, Rathlin Island, which is a habitat for black guillemots, Waterfoot in County Antrim, which has one of Ireland’s largest coastal seagrass meadows, and Carlingford Lough with its community of soft coral sea pens. This news was announced by the RYA as the association closely monitors MCZ developments and provides regular updates on the progress of MCZs and the potential impact on recreational boating. Consequently, it reports that anchoring in these new zones, will not be restricted in emergency situations. For further details visit the RYA website. Rebecca Hunter, an officer with the Northern Ireland Marine Task Force, said: “We are delighted to see the value of our seas recognised and protected within these areas. Northern Ireland is home to some of Europe’s most important marine wildlife and habitats. Marine Conservation Zones provide a real opportunity for the recovery of our seas and with effective management, previously damaged habitats and wildlife can recover. But, we need more of them to fill the gaps and this is only the start of the process.” The four new zones join the existing MCZ, Strangford Lough. Pictured, a rare species of clam.
Four new MCZs for Northern IrelandThe year 2017 represents a special anniversary for the British boat builder, Fairline, as it will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary. The summer of 1967 saw the launch of the Fairline’s first cruiser, the Fairline 19, pictured below, at its factory in Oundle. The model was handcrafted, in the latest GRP boat construction techniques of the time. Today this widely-known brand, now known as Fairline Boats, produces a range of sportscruisers, flybridges and motoryachts 38-78ft. A limited edition 50th anniversary commemorative hard-back book will be launched at the London Boat Show in January. This will include anecdotes from Fairline owners, key employees and heritage images
illustrating the companies five decades of boat building. The book launch at the show with coincide with the virtual reality experience of Fairline’s forthcoming new model, the Targa 63GTO. Also in January, the company will be launching the third variant from its 53ft range, the Squadron 53 pictured, at the German boat show, Boot Düsseldorf (21st-29th January).

Following the tragic death of three year-old Freddie Hussey, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has launched a campaign highlighting the importance of trailer safety. Freddie was killed in 2014 when a two-tonne trailer uncoupled from a 4x4 vehicle and careered onto the pavement. The DVSA has produced an online guide which is accompanied by a short video to help people check they are towing their boats safely. Transport Minister, Andrew Jones, said “I was shocked and saddened by the death of three year-old Freddie Hussey. It is absolutely essential that drivers carry out a few quick and simple checks to make sure their trailer is safe, so we do not see a repeat of this awful tragedy. This campaign will help drivers to make sure they are towing safely and will save lives in the process.” For information and advice about trailer safety and checks click here.

In December, visitors and berth holders at Noss on Dart Marina witnessed the naming and launch of motorboat, Thea, the final boat to be built on the Noss site at the Philips Shipyard. The 9.2 metre gentleman’s motoryacht was designed and built by retired boat-builder, Tom Owen and his wife Lorraine. Thea is built from marine plywood, mahogany and iroko timber and took eighteen months to build. The launch was a particularly historic occasion as the site has been a centre for shipbuilding since the 1880’s and saw the production of many wartime vessels. Set on the eastern bank of the River Dart, the Noss marina and boatyard site fell into administration in 2014 and the 37-acre site was acquired by marina company, Premier Marinas in April this year. Thea’s owners, Lorraine and Tom Owen, were overwhelmed by the support they received during the build and said “The success of this project has depended heavily on the help and enthusiasm we have received from our family and friends. We would like to thank in particular the staff and management of Noss on Dart Premier Marina for their ongoing, unfailing support and genuine kindness, including that of Premier’s CEO, Peter Bradshaw”.

As part of a 12-month trial by the Environmental Agency (EA), boaters using short stay visitor moorings on the non-tidal River Thames will now have to register their arrival by phone or online with private firm, Thames Visitor Moorings. The company has
been contracted to implement mooring regulations and will be collecting fees for 21 visitor sites along the Thames. In a comment to the Inland Waterways Association, the EA said “The new arrangements are expected to boost the income we receive from visitor moorings and improve the ability to monitor usage and take enforcement action if necessary.” A list of short stay visitor mooring sites can be found here.

BACKTIMEIN
We journey back to the 1960’s again this month with the brochure for the Cox and Haswell Rapier 3100. These beautiful twin diesel gentlemen’s cruisers were mahogany construction.
I read your article about scrapped GRP boats with interest and note that useful bits and pieces were removed prior to crushing. It seems to me that there would be many parts of interest to the likes of me - how do we get a list of parts available from this scrap merchant? Keep up the good work, it is a great magazine and it always makes my day when I read the next issue is available. Graham ArchardEditor replies: Thank you for your email and your kind comments. The boats we featured were not actually at a scrap merchant, they were at a boat storage yard. I suspect they were boats with outstanding fees and unco-operative or unknown owners, leaving the yard with the only option to scrap them. I suspect they must have an outlet for the parts removed, but I don’t know where that is. The biggest issue will be that, being in Guernsey, the parts will be expensive to ship and also possibly subject to import and VAT duties. If you have something specific in mind, it may be worth contacting them on the off chance. Their contact details can be found on their website here.
Scrapped boats
Firstly may I say what a great magazine you publish, all the more remarkable given that it is a free publication and yet manages to compete with the ‘Big Boys’ paid for stuff. Great job. I like to get my winterising right, so I used your last months article on the subject as a check list. There’s always a bit of guess work when it comes to how much antifreeze to run through the engines, too little leaves them vulnerable and too much is a waste. To measure exactly how much I need, I mix an approximate quantity and then add an egg cup full of washing up liquid, stir vigorously until it starts to froth and start pouring. As soon as you see soapy water coming out of the exhaust, your done. You may already know this useful tip, but if not, you might like to add it to your next winterising article. Brian HutchinsonEditor replies: A useful tip Brian and one that I haven’t tried myself. Five or six litres of antifreeze mix is usually adequate to protect the cooling system but it is nice to have visual confirmation.
Antifreeze tip
I thought I would share this picture of the late November, beautiful blue sky over our Thames marina with you. I hate this time of year in the boating calendar as it is the time when we tuck the boat up for the winter. Amongst other tedious jobs, this involves the obligatory winterising of the engines where antifreeze is run through the engines, usually on a dismally cold and dank day. So, with the end of November imminent and temperatures of -6⁰ predicted for the forthcoming night, the time had come and the task could not be put off any longer. However, we arrived on the boat to brilliant blue skies and the sun pouring into the back cockpit. It made the very tedious job just a bit more ‘palatable’. Job done, roll on spring! Pam BornEditor replies: We keep our boat in commission just for these kind of days, but you can’t be too careful when berthed on freshwater. Minus 6° is enough to cause damage.

Twenty-five foot sportscruisers are the entry-level point for many people when they are looking for
their first cruising motorboat, and for good reason. They not only offer just about everything that larger sportscruisers do, albeit on a smaller scale, but do so in an affordable to buy, run, moor and maintain package. Anyone in this market will find themselves spoilt for choice with boats from the UK, Europe and of course,
2007 Glastron GS259
the US. The latter probably account for the majority of this type of boat on the market at any one time, with the likes of Bayliner and Sea Ray being the prominent brands. Sometimes though it pays to widen the net a little, as you might just unearth a little gem. We set out to find a 25ft sportscruiser this month, but specifically we wanted something modern for around £30k, but most importantly, and this is where many
FOR SALE

of the US boats at this size fall down, we wanted to find one that offered the economy of a diesel engine. Our search could have been over almost immediately, if we had settled for the obvious choice. Our local broker alone had three Sealine S23/25’s, all diesel, for between £30 and £32k. These models are fantastic boats and well worth considering if you are in this market, but we wanted to find something a little different, and it didn’t take long. The 2007 Glastron GS259 is between one and four years newer than the Sealines, and with its D4 225hp engine, its drive train is the next generation to the Sealine’s KAD32’s. Glastron is a historic brand that was founded in the US in the 1950’s, but is probably best known over this side of the pond for supplying the
sportsboat that Roger Moore used to jump a Louisiana levee in Live and Let Die, accidentally setting a world record for the longest jump at that time. bow, there is a dinette, that converts into a double with a couple of infill cushions. The dinette is big enough for a family, but the standard white plastic table makes this dinette more of a lounge than a diner. A worthwhile and simple upgrade here would be a nice four person table top to turn this into the family area it deserves
to be. Under the dinette cushions there are carpet lined lockers and all of the vinyl seating, headlining and floor carpet in this area appear to be in very good condition. Aft of the dinette, on the port side, is the galley. This consists of a single alcohol/electric hob, a sink, a built-in microwave and a fridge below. You may not rustle up a roast here, but it is certainly sufficiently equipped to feed a family. Storage is a bit thin on the ground. There is an open shelf at eye level, a small cupboard and single drawer below, and a cupboard at the aft end, which is largely taken up by the fridge. A small amount of extra storage can be found in the step up to the cockpit. The galley, like much of this boat, looks very lightly used. This is undoubtedly because, despite being in its 10th year, the Glastron has only clocked up an indicated 168 hours. Headroom at the galley is
around 5ft 11in. The carpet in the galley area looks like it could do with a clean and there appears to be some bleaching in places, but otherwise it is in good order and importantly, nice and dry. Opposite the galley is the toilet compartment. This is voluminous, although a bit lacking in headroom at just 5ft 6in. It offers simple facilities of a toilet, small sink and shower, but again, it is more than adequate for family ablutions. Moving aft from the galley, there is a very thin half-height hanging locker on the port side, maybe big enough for around six hanging items as long as they are not bulky, and above here is the boat’s 12 and 240 volt switch and breaker panels. All boats of this style have a crawl-in midships berth, but on this boat, the crawl-in aspect is very literal. With a low and narrow entrance this is, perhaps, not
brought in by Cambrian Boats, but back in 2007, when our GS259 was new, the dealer was Essex Boatyards. How appropriate then, that this boat is now on brokerage at Boats.co.uk, the current name for the Essex based boat dealer. Down below the 259 offers textbook 25ft sportscruiser accommodation. In the

Moving out into the cockpit, via a bi-fold door and split folding companionway hatch, the former showing a small repair to the top corner, the GS259 offers an aft dinette, a lounger to port and the helm to starboard. The dinette looks suitable for up to four, but again it is rather let down by the small table. For a couple to eat, or a family to socialize, it would be fine, but for family al-fresco dining, you really would need to upgrade it. With the table removed, and some infill cushions in place, this area turns into a sunpad. Opposite the dinette is a wet-bar area with a small sink and running cold water. There is no hob or fridge here, and nowhere obvious to put them. Below the wet-bar is a dedicated coolbox storage area and a small locker that contains the boats master battery shut-off and breakers. The lounge seat in front of the wet-bar will allow
either two crew to sit facing inwards, or one lucky person to cruise comfortably facing aft. The helm has a seat large enough for two to cruise facing forward, although if the bolster is in use, it really is only suitable for a single person. The console is very well laid out, with all instruments located perfectly for good visual reference. The only downside was that back in 2007 quite a few manufacturers seemed to forget about additional electronics, and Glastron were not an exception with the 259. The previous owner has managed to surface mount a 5 inch Navman plotter next to the helm. If there is space behind, it may just be possible to upgrade to a flush mounted multi-function display, but you will be limited to a smallish screen. A VHF radio has been mounted low down with the mic placed next to the wheel. The helm feels comfortable, with everything in easy reach, and appears to offer good visibility all around. The whole cockpit is covered with a camper canopy. This appears to be in

excellent condition and benefits from zippered opening sections with in-built fly screens and privacy screens on the aft section, the latter being useful if you want to use the sunpad as an occasional berth. The canopy provides well over 6ft headroom throughout the cockpit. The canopy, cockpit vinyl and snap-in cockpit carpet all appear to be in very good condition. a berth for those of advancing years. Once inside, the berth goes the full width of the boat, so there is no storage at the foot or head of the berth as you might find in similar boats. The flipside though is that you get a berth that is well over 7ft in length. Widthwise, Glastron has not been so generous. At just 3ft 11in, this is a cosy double. Contrary to the condition of most of the boat, the mattress in this berth is damaged and threadbare in one particular area. I don’t know what could have caused this damage, but a fitted sheet would soon put it out of sight and out if mind. There is no curtain across the entrance to this berth, something that you would probably want to add if you ever had guests aboard, and the large port opens into the cockpit to stave off any feelings of claustrophobia that tight midships berths can sometimes induce.
Under the canopy, there is good headroom and comfortable extra living space

The engine bay hatch is below the dinette and, to gain access, you have to remove the aft transom seat, which is quite fiddly. The hatch is on the small side and this, together with the sheer size of the D4 engine, means that access to some parts of the engine bay and engine will be a little tricky. For everyday checks, the strainer and oil dipstick are easily accessible, although the primary fuel filter could have been placed better. Luckily it’s a Racor type, so element changes will be easy from above, although draining the bowl will require a bit more thought. The auto fire extinguisher was dated 2006, so is likely to need servicing or replacement, and there was a little bit of water in the bilge, which may just have been some accumulated rain. The D4 is a big heavy engine, but even so I would expect the 259 to hit 30+ knots with this installation. Nowadays you would get your 225hp courtesy of the compact Volvo D3, but with the same D4 engine being capable of delivering up to 300hp, it will be good to know that
bathing ladder. Overhead, this GS259 comes with the optional radar arch. It’s not the prettiest of designs and, in our opinion, the boat would look better without it, but it does provide somewhere to mount your electronics antennas, which is particularly important if you wanted to upgrade to radar. The hull above the waterline includes some blue gelcoat detailing, which adds a touch of class and breaks up the mass of white. This blue GRP is starting to show signs of fading, but a good polish and some quality wax protection will bring it back like new. The topsides are almost devoid of any mooring scrapes or battle scars, with just a couple of very minor marks to be found. There are some decals missing on the port side, but if you removed the glue residue you
the engine is relatively unstressed in this installation. Cockpit storage is provided by a large cave beneath the helm seat, a locker under the forward dinette seat and another wet locker in the transom behind a poppered vinyl curtain. The latter is a bit tricky to get to with the aft transom seat in place, so probably best utilised for less used items. Access to the foredeck is via three moulded steps next to the helm and through an opening section of windscreen. The bow rail is quite low, so mooring would probably be best achieved from the cockpit, where you have easy access to the midships cleats with the canopy sides removed. There is no proper anchor locker access from the deck, the chain is fed directly down to the locker below, with limited access from the deck available via a small round removable hatch. Moving out aft, you pass through a good-sized transom gate onto a bathing platform that is huge for the size of boat. There is a useful wet locker, the hinges of which need re-fixing, and a concealed
would struggle to notice. Overall, the hull appears to be in very good condition for a boat of its age, again an indication of its 168 hours. Even the aft corners are scrape free, something quite unusual in a boat with a large overhanging bathing platform. The only thing you would really need to

attend to is the antifoul, which is tired and flaky. The sterndrive is a DP-G model, which has the external steering rams. These can be prone to leakage, but this one has the rubber gaiters fitted and appears to be leak free. The aft most prop does have a small amount of damage on two of the blades, but this looks minor enough to be easily repairable, rather than requiring replacement. This GS259 is a gem. Yes it is 10 years old, but it doesn’t look or feel it. The engine is really only just run in and a weekend spent cleaning, polishing and antifouling would transform this into a boat that people would think is much newer. At 25ft, it would make a perfect first cruiser for a couple, with or without young children, and the single diesel engine will provide just about the most economical cruising you can buy, short of opting for displacement speeds. Most used boats require a certain amount of remedial work when first taking ownership, but with this 259 you could pretty much sign on the dotted line, and cast off. Back in 2007, this 259 would have cost in the region of £65k. The current

PRE-SURVEY GUIDE
Used Boat Self-Survey
F
PART 1
If the boat is out if the water, perhaps the first thing you should look at is the below waterline hull. A professional surveyor will carry out a moisture reading using specialist equipment but in the meantime there is plenty for you to look for. Osmosis can be easily seen if it has reached the stage where blisters in the hull are obvious. If you find blisters, try squeezing one with your thumb nail and see what comes out. If the liquid has a vinegary smell, it is almost certainly osmosis. Be aware
Below the waterline
though, sometimes the blisters are just in the antifoul paint and all that is behind them is some water. Osmosis does not spell the end for a boat, but
or most of us, a used boat purchase represents the second largest purchase we are likely to make. Even a modest boat is a serious outlay when you are on a modest income. It would be prudent, therefore, to take great care over the purchase and allow your head to overrule your heart when it comes to decision making. We would always recommend getting a professional survey carried out on any potential purchase that represents a significant outlay. Where you draw the
line will depend upon how risk averse you are, but once the boats purchase price reaches a few thousand, it pays to spend a few hundred having it looked over by someone who knows what to look for. Having said that, when you are in the market, those survey fees could start to pile up if you get one carried out on every boat that takes your fancy, especially when some of these boats will have enough issues that you subsequently decide to walk away. In this case the survey fee
is well worth paying, as it will save you from an expensive mistake, but many of the faults can be found during your initial inspection, allowing you to decide whether to spend your survey money on an altogether more worthwhile prospect. Equally, if you are buying a boat that falls outside of your risk assessment for a professional survey, you should at least ensure you give the boat a serious going over yourself before committing. In this article we show you how to carry out a DIY pre-survey survey. That’s a survey that you can undertake yourself, before deciding if the boat purchase is worth proceeding with and ultimately investing in a professional survey. In the case of bargain basement boats that probably don’t justify the cost of a professional survey, this is your best chance to decide if the boat is a project or a basket case.
Over the next three issues we are going to take you through what the untrained eye should look for in a used boat, starting this month with the hull and exterior fixtures and fittings. It is fair to say that there is unlikely to be a boat on the second hand market that doesn’t fall foul of a few of the things we are pointing out. Very little is irreparable, so rather than see them as an excuse to walk away, use them as a bargaining tool to find the right price for the boat.

fixing it is expensive and, if you decide to go ahead, should be taken into account when you make your offer. Equally, a boat with osmosis can be bought, used and subsequently sold without it being attended to, but the next person is going to want a decent discount, so make sure you negotiate one for yourself. While you are under the hull, look for longitudinal stress cracks, particularly around the chines and spray rails. An antifouled boat out of the water helps here, as the cracks often retain water, darkening the antifoul paint and making them more visible.
Thwartships stress cracking is normally associated with internal bulkheads, so look for these too as they could indicate movement of bulkheads and expensive structural problems. Also check for poor repairs by looking along the whole hull. If you can easily see a repair, it is a good indication that it has not been well carried out. If the boat has a bowthruster, check to ensure that the tube looks secure and that the gearbox and propeller are in good condition, that the anode is present and that there are no oil leaks. Seacock intakes are another area for close inspection. Most boats have
a least a couple and it is important to check that they are well fixed, but also that they are of a suitable material and in good condition. The main thing to look for here in metal skin fittings below the waterline is dezincification. This is indicated where the bronze metal is showing signs of pink colouration. If the skin fitting is painted over, take a coin and scrape a very small amount off to expose the metal. Other through-hull fittings such as a log paddle wheel or a depth sounder transducer can also be checked for condition and security.
Hull above the waterline
Osmosis can be expensive to treat, so boats affected tend to reflect it in the price they realise
Below the waterline will need a thorough check. Examine the antifoul, fittings and bowthruster
Metal underwater skin fittings should be checked for signs of dezinctification
A walk around the hull will show up any mooring wounds, look particularly closely around the bow and on the stern quarters. Coloured gelcoat will be a bit more tricky, and therefore expensive, to repair. Coloured gelcoat also has a tendency to fade due to UV degradation. This can be brought back fairly easily with a really good polish and maintained with copious wax protection, but this tends to be an ongoing job and worth bearing in mind when thinking about older boats with coloured gelcoat. With your head resting on the boat, look along the length of the topsides for any poorly repaired damage. GRP topsides are rarely perfectly smooth, and a few minor mould marks are to be expected, but any large areas of uneven

Faded dark gelcoat can be polished, but damage will be harder to hide
Rubbing strakes, corners, mouldings and above waterline plastic skin fittings should all be checked
As you walk around the decks be very aware of any areas that feel soft or spongy
Deck fittings should be checked for damage or adjacent stress cracking to the gelcoat
On DeckWalk around the decks checking again for damage to the fibreglass. Impact damage is less likely here, but stress cracking may be found where decks meet uprights and around the base of stanchions and cleats. Check that the stanchions, cleats and any other fixtures are firmly fixed in place. If they are loose, water may well have found its way into the underlying fibreglass. As you walk around the deck, be aware of any areas that feel spongy. This could indicate delamination, or rot in the underlying structure. If the boat has real teak decks, these should get a thorough inspection for excess wear, damage or water laying underneath. The latter will be obvious as you will see and hear the water being squeezed out as you walk on it. Relaying real teak decks is time consuming and expensive. Plastic teak, doesn’t have the same problems, but it is still worth checking that it is properly fixed down as water laying underneath may cause problems.
or rippled gelcoat should be investigated further. Properly repaired damage is not a reason to walk away, but knowing it is there, you can at least point it out to the surveyor for closer scrutiny. Some builders use plastic skin fittings on the topsides. These are often only just above the waterline and can be badly degraded by UV. If the surface is crumbly, they will certainly need replacing. Exhaust ports and engine room vents should also be inspected for damage and to ensure that they are properly bonded in place. The rubbing strake is another area where damage can often be found. The odd scrape is expected on an older boat, but
a very battered and worn strake may need replacing. The rubber insert on metal framed strakes is cheap and easy to replace, but fixing damage to the metal itself is a bigger, more expensive job. If the rubbing strake is rope or wood, check that it is not rotting, as these can be costly to replace. At the stern check the bathing platform for mooring damage and, if it is modular, good attachment.

Window rubber can degrade and become brittle, plastic can be scratched and crazed. Moss growth can cause leaks, and copious use of sealant could indicate poorly fixed leaks
Older boats often suffer from problems with the windows, hatches and portholes. Metal frames can corrode, wooden frames can rot, seals can shrink and plastic windows can craze and crack. Leaks are an obvious problem to check for. Look for badly applied sealant externally, as this is a sure sign that a previous owner was trying to cure a leak, and is likely to have been unsuccessful. Most window problems can be fixed quite easily, by fitting
new seals for example, but for bigger problems they may require removal, overhaul and refitting. Sometimes problems can be caused by lack of care and simply fixed by clearing moss away from the channels and drains.
Cockpits and flybridges
Windows hatches and ports
The first thing to look at here is the canvas work that covers these areas. Are they free from tears and damage? Is the stitching holding together OK? Do all of the zips work? Are all of the windows clear and free from damage? Most importantly, does the canvas still fit? As they age, canvas covers and canopies shrink to the point where they become impossible to correctly fix in place. At this point the canopy is likely to need replacement and, depending upon
size and complexity, this could easily cost a couple of thousand pounds. If the canopy is still mostly in good condition, but has a small amount of damage such as a single broken zip, a small amount of loose stitching or a torn window, these can all be easily and fairly cheaply repaired by any canopy maker. Exterior seating is another area where big bills could await the unwary. Any seating that has been left exposed to the elements needs careful checking. Not only will the vinyl be weathered, but the foam may be waterlogged and any plywood bases may have started to rot. General grubbiness can usually be cleaned up, but tears and looses stitching in old vinyl seats can only really be overcome by being recovered and, like the canopy, this could
easily cost in the region of a couple of thousand pounds. If the boat you are looking at has an exterior helm, especially one that looks like it has been left uncovered for any period of time, take a close look at all of the instruments and controls. Corrosion is likely to be found, and sometimes the instruments become damaged through water ingress and the clear dials become cloudy due to UV exposure.
Much of what is written here is pertinent whatever the building material of the boat, despite it being mainly aimed at boats made from fibreglass. If you are looking at a wood or steel boat, you can still do your own pre-survey survey, but they will require a surveyor who specialises in the material, as they come with their own unique problems. With wooden boats, the enemy is rot, which will most likely be out of sight. With metal boats, corrosion is the killer. Any areas of soft wood, or rusty metal will need a proper inspection, but if you find lots of either, it is a sure fire indication that the boat is going to need some quite extensive work and, unless you are looking for a project, may be one to walk away from.
Wood and steel boats
Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a YDSA or a IIMS accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.
Q I noticed that the sump on my AD31 is rusting quite badly. So much so that it feels like it might start to leak soon. I suspect the engine is going to have to be removed to replace it. When I looked up the price of a new one from Volvo, I nearly had a heart attack. Was this engine used in a car or truck? If so, I might be able to pick up a secondhand one from a breakers yard.
A Unfortunately no. The AD31 was a marine specific unit, not used in any other application. It’s not a cheap part, but I suspect demand for them is rather limited, which is reflected in the price.

A The typical 110Ah leisure battery is around 350mm long, 175mm wide and 190mm high. From this I suspect your compartment must be around 1250mm long and 195mm wide. One way to increase capacity slightly would be to buy some taller batteries. Exide 657SX/658SX are the same length and width as your 110Ah batteries, but have a capacity of 142Ah due to their extra height at 285mm. This gives you an extra 64Ah, or 32 usable Ah, for no effort at all. Alternatively, a pair of similarly sized Leoch 160Ah AGM batteries would provide an extra 100Ah. Another option would be to reduce the size of your single starting battery by swapping the 110Ah one currently fitted, for something like an Odyssey PC925 or PC1200 battery. These are designed for engine starting duties, so will provide the CCA (cold cranking amps) that your KAD32 needs in a much smaller package. This will save you around 100mm on the length so this, together with your existing spare 200mm might just about enable you to fit four 6-Volt Trojan deep cycle T145 batteries. With two batteries wired in series and then the two pairs wired in parallel, this would give you a 12-volt bank with a 520Ah capacity, more than doubling your existing capacity, although you would need to check their suitability to be used to start the engine on that bank. The easiest, and cheapest, option would be to install a single battery box somewhere else for the lone start battery, and use the vacated space in your current battery box to add a third battery to that bank. Another 110Ah leisure battery provides 50% more capacity for around £60. Whatever option you choose, you should ensure that your charging system, both on the engines and through shorepower, is suitable for the batteries that you end up with, particularly if you mix and match different types on different banks.
Q My boat is currently fitted with three 12 volt batteries, one to start the port engine, and a bank of two that start the starboard engine and also run the boat’s domestic systems. The engines are Volvo Penta KAD32’s. The battery compartment seems like it was
designed to fit these batteries, which are the ubiquitous 110ah leisure type. There is very little spare space on the width or the length, maybe 20mm and 200mm respectively, although it appears that I do have quite a bit of space available on the height if I need it. My question is, how can I increase my domestic bank capacity while staying within the confines of my battery compartment?
Engine battery for Volvo KAD32 Frost damage in UK climateQ I have read your winterising feature and wondered how real the risk is of a boat suffering frost damage in the UK climate. Surely the problem is overstated, as it never really gets that cold here does it?
A While it is true that our winters in the UK rarely get cold enough to cause serious problems, it does sometimes happen. I have seen and read about cracked engine blocks on raw water-cooled boats, and cracked heat exchangers on fresh water cooled engines. The problem is, we just don’t know in advance if the winter is going to be severe enough or not. I see it as a precautionary measure that helps put my mind at rest and saves me worrying when we do get the odd particularly cold snap. In truth, boats in fresh water are more at risk, as seawater has a slightly lower freezing point. Boats out of the water are at greater risk, as they lose the slightly warming effect of being surrounded by water. The further north you are in the UK the greater the risk too, generally, but I would not rely on this, as the weather can be unpredictable in this sense. Ultimately it’s a gamble. If you do nothing, you might well be OK, but if the worse does happen you will kick yourself for not taking precautions when you see the size of the repair bill.

Will my Birchwood 25 plane?Q I own a Birchwood 25 with a Volvo Penta AQ145 running through a 280 outdrive. My boat is meant to do 17 knots, but will only do around 8. My engine will only reach 2800rpm. I have changed the timing chain, upgraded the points to electronic ignition and installed new plugs and leads. The drive is currently fitted with a 14x15 prop and I have tried a 15x15, which I borrowed from a friend with a Fairline, that has two of the same engines and drives, but it actually revved a little lower. The engine revs freely up to maximum in neutral and has been like this since I bought the boat in May of this year. At that time the hull was clean and the boat lightly loaded, so I don’t think this is the problem. I have also checked the valve gaps, which were OK, the sparkplugs, which were a good colour and the camshaft, which is showing no real signs of wear. There are also no nasty smells or smoke coming from the engine. I have ordered a carb overhaul kit and will be reconditioning both of them over the winter. I am running out of ideas. Any ideas on how I can get my Birchwood to plane?
A The Birchwood 25 is quite a heavy boat, 2400kgs according to the brochure, and has no doubt gained further weight over the years. The 138hp AQ145A was always quite a marginal installation, even when new, providing a top speed of around 18 knots. There are a number of reasons why the boat will now refuse to plane and is therefore sticking at 8 knots. With marginal power, the cleanliness of the hull, drive and prop is paramount. Just a small amount of fouling/slime could be enough to cause your problems. The prop would also need to be in pristine condition, as just slight damage could be enough to stop your boat from planing. Next, the engine itself will need to be in tip-top condition. Over the years all engines lose a bit of power, so just simple wear and tear could see your engine dropping enough HP to stop the boat getting up on the plane. If you look at modern equivalents to your boat, in terms of size and weight, you will find that they usually come with over 200hp. Obviously short of a rebuild, you
won’t be able to do much to find any lost HP apart from ensuring that the engine is set up as best as it can be in terms of ignition timing and timing belt, plugs, points and valves etc. You should also ensure that the fuel filter has been changed, that the fuel pump is operating at full efficiency and that the twin carbs are set up perfectly. Weight is also going to be your enemy, so shed whatever you can. Once all this is done, all you really have left is to try a different propeller. I haven’t had any joy finding out what prop the 25 had from new, but a 14x15 doesn’t sound too far out. The 280 drive was also available in different variants with different drive ratios, so it is worth checking that the correct ratio drive is fitted, incase someone has changed it over the years with the wrong version. I believe your boat should have the 2.15:1 version. This is easy to check by turning the crankshaft over until you get one full turn of the prop. The crankshaft should turn 2.15 times. If we take your existing 14x15 prop as a starting point. It would appear that, with all else being OK, the prop is too coarse. For each inch of pitch reduction, you should see an increase in maximum rpm of 200. Your AQ145A should rev to between 4500 and 5100 so you are a long way off the bottom of this range. At 2800rpm you are simply not getting into the power curve, and then the engine is only producing a fraction of its potential HP, so there is no way the boat is going to plane without getting the engine revving more freely. When you changed to a 15x15, you increased the diameter, which I would expect to reduce your RPMs, as it in fact did. Looking at the available props for the 280 drive, the only options I can see that might improve things are the 15x11 or 14x13. Theoretically, the former might provide an extra 800rpm, the latter an extra 400, but if this allows the boat to lift out of the water and start to plane, you could well see a further improvement as the load on the engine decreases. Lastly, if it feels like the boat is trying to plane but is stuck with the bow in the air, try shifting some weight forward, or add some trim tabs. In a similar vein, our 16ft Mayland with 20hp on the back will not go above 5-6 knots, as the power is just too marginal. If I move weight up the front, it will climb onto the plane and run at 12 knots. No more power, or change of prop, just better weight distribution and twice the speed.
Damaged or incorrect props are often the cause when a boat won’t reach its correct speed

Anyone who has travelled along the white chalky coast of East Sussex will no doubt be familiar
with the modern marinas at Eastbourne and Brighton, but for those looking for an escape from the norm, there is Newhaven. Lying 7 miles to the east of Brighton, Newhaven is a commercial and ferry port, as well as a fishing harbour with a
300-berth marina. Newhaven lies at the mouth of the River Ouse, a tidal river that meanders its way upstream through the historic castle town of Lewes and beyond. The town dates back to Saxon times, when the settlement of ‘Meeching’ was established in the sixth century. At its height, in Tudor times, the River

NewhavenOuse was a trading route used by cargo barges. The river mouth was originally at nearby Seaford and, from the sea, the channel travelled west behind the shingle bar before turning north. When a storm hit in the 1500’s the river breached the shingle bar and the channel was re-cut, and so came the name, Newhaven. Today Mill Creek marks the river’s old route to the sea. With the River Ouse silting up, and the decline of the port of Seaford, the port of Newhaven was established.
Newhaven grew as a trading port and a centre for shipbuilding. It became one of only two fully navigable harbours between the Isle of Wight and Dover and flourished with the export of Sussex oak, whilst importing block ice from the Baltic for fish and meat preservation, and wine and spirits from the continent. The Victorian era saw the arrival of the steam railway, which changed the face of many towns on this coast, but for Newhaven it also brought a steam ferry

Battered by storms, the West Breakwater is currently closed to the public, and the surrounding cliffs are slowly eroding. The promenade overlooking Newhaven’s West Beach has also sadly been left to the elements. Yes, Newhaven’s High Street and town centre is a little run down, the marina is also in need of some TLC, but the harbour definitely has all the facilities a visitor would need. It is a useful bolthole on an exposed coastline and you are sure to be captivated by its history.
Newhaven entrance lies 7 miles to the east of Brighton and is, in fact, the next break in the façade of chalky white cliffs that links the two towns. The harbour entrance can be easily identified by its white lighthouse (lit with red base) at the end of the West Breakwater. It is approximately 700 metres from the end of the Western Breakwater to the river entrance between the East and West Piers. The harbour entrance channel into the port is 120 metres wide, narrowing to 75 metres at the river entrance, aptly known as ‘the narrows’. Keep well inside the channel and be

Today, a 19th century fort, which was used in times of war, is a main attraction for the town. Troops involved in both the Dieppe raid and D-Day landings departed from Newhaven, many of which were Canadian. Unfortunately the Canadians suffered heavy losses and it is for this reason the Canadian flag is seen flying from the ramparts when the Newhaven Fort is open to the public. Construction of the East and West Piers was underway by the early 1880’s, followed by the 705-metre West Breakwater, with its distinctive white lighthouse, which protects the harbour from the prevailing south-westerly winds. With no connection across the river, several bridges were built over the centuries, leading to the construction of the Newhaven Swing Bridge seen today.

aware of the silting shallows off West Beach on your port side. The harbour entrance channel is dredged approximately three times a year to provide a minimum depth of 6m below chart datum. Entry is fairly straightforward and the harbour is accessible in all wind directions. However, in strong onshore winds, seas can heap up at the entrance. If you are travelling from the east care must also be taken to keep clear of the shallows that lie to the east of the entrance, as these cause heaping seas. Keep well south of the West Breakwater lighthouse until you
Bridge, which opens at high water for pre-arranged transits (VHF channel 12)and large cargo ships. These usually offload their cargo at the wharfs on the North Quay. Opposite lies Denton Island, a naturally formed island with a drying inner creek, which is home to a couple of boatyards with drying mud moorings.
Visitors to Newhaven Marina will need to contact them on VHF channel 80 or 12, call sign ‘Newhaven Marina’, or call the friendly and helpful Marina Office on 01273 513881. Alternatively, you can moor on the outside of the Visitor Pontoon, which is the outer pontoon to the south, and ask for instructions. Here access is all states of tide, except an hour either side of low water on a spring tide. The marina has 20 visitors’ spots available and you will usually be directed to a vacant berth within the marina. Be aware the marina suffers from silting and therefore is quite shallow in places, with some boats touching the very soft silt bottom over a spring low water. The marina conducts a sporadic dredging program, and consequently will ask for your draught before allocating you a berth. We are told that generally, motorboats with a draught
are able see the East Pier and inside the harbour before turning in. Leisure boats must call up ‘Newhaven Radio’ on VHF channel 12 for permission to enter and exit the harbour, and also obey the traffic lights that are displayed above the Port Control building on the West Pier. There is an 8-knot speed limit south of the East Pier Light, and 5-knot limit once north of the East Pier Light. Also keep a good look out for commercial traffic and ferries. It is worth noting that Transmarche Ferries operate up to three sailings a day. Newhaven Marina lies a quarter of a mile from the river entrance to the west side of the harbour and is overlooked, to the north, by high-rise apartment buildings. The industrial side of the harbour can be seen to port, namely a metal works. Continuing on past the marina, West Quay is to port with the Newhaven RNLI Lifeboat Station, fuel berth and fishing pontoons. Further upstream lies the Newhaven Swing

There are two more attractions relatively closeby, The Newhaven Museum and Paradise Park, both of which lie on the north east side of the harbour. For these you will need to cross the swing bridge and head north up the A26 road. The Newhaven Museum charts the maritime history of the harbour and is home to many local treasures, with some exhibits dating back to prehistoric times. Adult entry is £2 while under 16’s enter free. If you want to visit the town we would recommend strolling along the West Quay. The paved waterfront takes you past the Newhaven RNLI Lifeboat Station and Newhaven’s popular fishmonger, Bickerstaffs, where the display of freshly-caught fish is sure to inspire your supper. It is a 10-15 minute walk to the High Street (via Bridge Street) from the marina. The large historic castle town of Lewes is a great place to visit and is just a 20-minute bus ride away. If you have a tender, it is possible to navigate up the River Ouse to Lewes on the rising tide. The 7-mile route upstream has a minimum clearance of approximately 3 metres and passes under the 18th century Southease Swing Bridge (now a fixed span), then the A27 and Southerham railway bridge. Just before the centre of Lewes there is a boatyard on the east side where there are a couple of pontoons with shore access. Be aware that the current is fairly strong and runs particularly fast on a spring tide. You will also need to watch out for shoaling on the bends. High water at Lewes is approximately 2 hours after Newhaven and starts to fall again an hour later.
TransportNewhaven is very well served by public transport, with two train stations and bus routes that operate to Lewes and along the coast in both directions. The number 12 Coaster, Brighton to Eastbourne bus route, departs from Newhaven’s Lower Place, as does the number 123 to Lewes (20 mins). Newhaven Town is the main train station providing routes to London, Brighton and Seaford (Southern Railway). This is located across the swing bridge on the east side of the harbour. London Victoria is approximately an 80-minute train ride away. Newhaven Harbour Station is the next stop south of Newhaven Town on the line to Seaford and offers connections to the ferry terminal. Transmarche Ferries Newhaven to Dieppe route takes approximately 4 hours and operates up to three sailings a day. Newhaven Cabs (01273 510051) operate from the High Street.
Further afieldPopular local anchorages in good weather include Newhaven Beach, which is just outside the harbour to the east, and the very picturesque Cuckmere Haven. The modern marinas of Brighton and Eastbourne are also just 7-mile and 12-mile passages away respectively. In sunny weather there is also an obligatory slow jaunt along the breathtaking Seven Sisters towards the iconic coastal landmark of Beachy Head and its Lighthouse.

I have always been a big advocate of using a dehumidifier to keep a boat dry and fresh during the winter. I started with an old-fashioned refrigerant type, which was not only heavy, but also not very good at dehumidifying when the ambient temperature approaches freezing. With the advent of desiccant types, I thought all of my prayers had been answered. A lightweight unit, that works in cold temperatures, and that also gives out some heat. Unfortunately I found out the hard way that they had one flaw. They don’t like to be operated on a time switch. If you have an unmetered supply of electric this isn’t a problem, as you can just leave it running on an appropriate continuous setting. If, however you are paying per unit, they can be surprisingly expensive to run, and running for around six hours per day keeps the boat dry and the electric bills low. I broke two desiccant type dehumidifiers by running them on a timeswitch, the problem being that they have to go through a shut down procedure to cool them, something that doesn’t happen when the power is suddenly killed. The DD8L Zambezi from Meaco is unique as it comes with a built in timer, which will allow it to run down properly before turning off. We’ve been running one for a couple of months onboard our Sealine. Could this be the ultimate boat dehumidifier? Operationally, the Zambezi is, on first glance at least, a little more complicated to use. This is due to its digital controls and LCD display. Once you get your head around navigating the menu and changing settings, it becomes as easy as any other model. The controls let you enter all sorts of parameters, including fan speed, humidity setting, louvre operation and timer settings. You can also run the unit for a single pre-determined length of time of between one and eight hours. For a really damp situation
you could use the laundry mode, which ramps everything up to the max until the humidity falls below 35%. It will then go into a sleep mode and monitor the humidity, ready to fire up again if it rises over 40%. You also get an ioniser setting that removes germs, bacteria, mould spores and odours from the air. Powerwise, the Zambezi is not too hungry. In standby mode it uses as little as

If you are like us, you probably wax and polish your boat no more than annually. In between it suffers whatever detergents and cleaning products you can find in your locker. The trouble is that often you end up removing any wax protection, leaving your gelcoat unprotected and exposed to the elements. Quick Finish is a product that can be used all year round to help safeguard your prized plastic. The idea is that after washing the boat, you spray a fine mist of Quick Finish over the still wet boat. You then rinse the boat again and dry with the microfibre towel that comes with the product. The result is a smooth and shiny surface. It says on the bottle that it is an alternative to wax. I would say that is probably a good description, but would add, that I see it as more of an ongoing top-up of protection. On the area we tested, there was clearly evidence of water beading where none existed on the untreated adjacent GRP. That’s proof enough for me that it is doing some good. The one litre bottle is said to treat a 30ft boat twice, and the suggestion is to re-apply every 4-6 weeks.
45W and, when dehumidifying, it seems to draw between 350 and 700W, depending upon the setting chosen. I have always liked the ability for desiccant dehumidifiers to provide some background heat, and on my current one this is quite controllable by choosing different settings. With the Zambezi, the heat seemed to be permanently on. Even on its lowest setting, the air being blown out was a constant 30°C, and this went up to 35° on higher settings. Just occasionally, I would have liked to have had the ability to dehumidify, without too much additional heat, but this really is the only criticism I can dish out. So is it the perfect boat dehumidifier? In terms of the in-built timer controls, I would say yes. It is larger and a bit heavier (9kg compared to 6.5kg) than the Ecoair DD122, which is probably one of the most popular desiccant dehumidifiers for boat owners. It is also a bit more expensive than the standard DD8L, but with electricity rates the way they are, the difference could easily be saved in a short time by using the in-built timer. We clearly are not the only ones taken by the Zambezi. It has also been awarded the 2016 Which? Best Buy.
The Zambezi gives out a fair amount of heat and can be fitted with a permanent drain hose

Through the years Broom has earned an excellent reputation for building quality aft cabin boats that offer
liveaboard ‘home-from-home’ comfort, and, more importantly, ‘chameleon’ cruisers that are equally at home on the coast or inland. There is one particularly successful 42-footer that has effectively been in production for over 16 years now, the Broom 42cl and 425. It all began in the early 90’s when Broom introduced its much-updated Ocean
walkaround decks which harked back to the successful Ocean 37 of the 1970’s. The 38 proved a superb successor and obvious trendsetter for things to come. In the late 90’s Broom rebranded its ranges, Offshore and Coastal. With this move the popular Ocean 38 was re-named the 38cl, cl being an abbreviation for coastal. However, by 2000 there was need for the larger model of this style and a new ‘Coastal’ flagship emerged, the 42cl. The new model offered more space with an

With curvier superstructures and ‘key feature’ chunky-framed, deck-level cabin windows, the range was radically different to Broom’s bygone models. Crucially in 1996, Wolstenholme was commissioned by Martin Broom to design the flagship of the range, the Ocean 38. InteriorStep aboard this aft cabin Broom and you are bound to immediately feel at home. Interiors are both practical and welcoming. Two people could happily spend several weeks aboard and the boat easily has enough wardrobe and storage to match these requirements. The 6-berth accommodation is arranged over two levels and offers generous headroom of approximately 6ft throughout. Most boats will have two cabins, with an upper and lower dinette in the main cabin area. Very few of these boats were built for stock, so a degree of in-build customer customisation is to be

boats, nor indeed buy from another brand. The new 42cl saw many existing 38 owners upgrade to this newer, modernised model. However, new customers surely would have been faced with a bit of a dilemma, should they choose the new 415 Offshore or the 42cl? Well perhaps the build figures hold the answer, 12 of the 415 were built, while 49 of the 42cl left the factory. In 2007 Broom cleverly amalgamated the attributes of the discontinued entry-level aft cabin Offshore ‘OS’ models into its Wolstenholme-derived coastal range, and effectively simplified the entire range. The ‘cl’ Coastal namesake was banished and it was replaced with a ‘5’, consequently the 42 became known as the 425, alongside its smaller sister, the 395, a popular development of the 38 and 39. This name change marked the first of two evolutions for the 42. It was awarded an additional foot in length, larger engines and a stylish exterior makeover. In 2010 Broom Boats was sold to Norfolk-based investors, and this signified an end to its 112 years of family ownership. Today, under its new ownership, Broom continue to build boats from 30-43ft at the original factory in Brundall. The range includes the 430, which is the second evolution of the 42/425. This much-updated model made its debut at Dusseldorf Boat Show in 2014 and has an athwartships double in the aft cabin and optional cockpit hardtop with retractable canvas roof. It is available from £435,000. 42’s and 425’s are fairly rare on the used market, and certainly seem to hold their value when they do appear. Broom 42cl’s are typically priced from £185k, with 425’s in the quarter of the million plus category. We take a look at the differences and what

Some models may benefit from a generator to power a microwave and washing machine, as seen on the 2011 425 that we viewed. Opposite the galley is a lower dinette area. This will seat four adults comfortably and converts into an occasional, fairly private double berth. There are eye-level cupboards set into the hull side and further storage in

ensuite access to the toilet compartment. Scissor berths were an option here on the 425, allowing it to convert between a double and V-berth and making the layout a bit more versatile, otherwise an additional infill was available. pontoon. However, a curved top to the door means that rain will enter the cabin if left open, so it is worth checking the immediate wood surfaces for any water damage or leaks. With no side door on the 425 there will either be a small corner sofa or additional cupboards on this side. The forward cabin offers two berths in a V-berth configuration with ample space to dress, a wardrobe on the port side and

the seat bases. An alternative layout saw a third cabin with bunk beds here, which is ideal for when the family comes to stay. In addition, one 425 customer specified a large ‘day wear’ wardrobe in the dinette/galley lobby area. Moving aft from the saloon, a set of steps brings take down into a small lobby. As well as a door to the aft cabin, it incorporates an access door to the aft cabin shower compartment to port, and a day wear wardrobe, ideal for foul weather gear or a washing machine. One 425 owner specified the door to be set into the cockpit bulkhead, thus increasing the floor and dressing space in the cabin area. Through the door to the aft cabin, a very spacious master suite awaits. Inside is a large central double bed with wood storage units along both sides. Two escape hatches in the transom provide a lovely view out across the water, and smaller side windows provide light and ventilation. On the port side there is a dedicated moulded shower cubicle with an integrated seat, while to starboard, there is the ensuite
toilet compartment, which is a good size. The boat’s 100-gallon water tank is located under the double berth. Veneered wood surfaces and soft furnishings are usually set off by statement colour or patterned cushions with matching curtains. There was a wide choice of soft furnishings, such as velour, soft woven cloth or leather, and wood finishes included dark cherry and oak. The 2011 425 we viewed had been finished in a Canadian White Oak, uniquely specified by the owner with a grain running horizontally. This brought a very light, modern feel to the whole boat.
Aft Cockpit and HelmA door in the cockpit moulding on the port side leads into a superbly safe and enclosed ‘conservatory-like’ aft cockpit. Immediately to starboard is a U-shaped seating-cum-dining area with a fold-out table. Additional seating on the opposite side makes the area ample for 4-6 people or more. Deck storage and a two-bottle gas locker can be found under the seating.
One owner had devised an internal tonneau cover, which masked the entire cockpit area, this helped keep the dust and dirt at bay during winter months. Visibility out through the large two-pane windscreen is very good, and dials and navigation equipment are sympathetically arranged across a two-tier sculpted console, which incorporates chart storage. Engine dials are set into
a long console-width panel forward and a chartplotter (usually a 12inch Raymarine) is mounted in a large panel in front of the navigator. Dash panels are normally finished in a wood effect, but there was a carbon fibre option available, which is rather attractive. At the helm itself everything falls to hand easily, with switches and a compass ahead, and throttles on a panel beside the helmsman. The helm seat has individually bolstered seats for three people. One of the great features about these boats is the clever pram-like canopy that covers the helm section of the cockpit. Just unlatch a couple of clamp fittings and the whole section folds back onto the radar arch. This does involve removing two sidescreens first, which in the case of the 42 can only be replaced from the outside. This can be a bit of a pain when it starts to rain, and is not ideal when out at sea.

On DeckThese boats have possibly the safest and widest side decks you are likely to find on a boat of this size. Add to this the fact that they are step-less and fully walkaround, and you will find the 42/425 a joy to crew. The decks have a very gradual slope either side with a smooth toerail and solid double guardrails, making it very easy to move about on deck. The open decks also provide great access to the stern cleats, something that can be a bit of a struggle on similar-sized aft cabin boats with flush aft deck coamings. The decks are relatively low and side boarding is made possible via a chained central stanchion gate and a step in the hull side, formed by the teardrop-shaped engine room vent. All-round real teak decks look stunning and were a popular, albeit an expensive
£9k option on the 42cl. They came as standard on the 425, and we would recommend examining these carefully for damage or water ingress. With the sloping decks, rainwater runs forward, so examine the deck underfoot, squelching or bubbles between the caulking would indicate that water has found its way underneath. Also be aware, years of cleaning and scrubbing can also take their toll, exposing the grain, so some ongoing upkeep will be required. The 42’s stylish ‘swoosh’ eyebrow windows have aluminium frames (stainless upgrade £18k) and the front windscreen is divided in two by a black frame support, which gives the impression, from the outside, of an ultra-modern one-pane windscreen. 425 models have modern frameless windows, which are often tinted black with black internal frames, giving the boat its distinctive modern streamline appearance. One crucial difference between the two models is access aboard at the stern. The 42 has a one set of steps moulded into the transom on the port side, while the 425 has a set each side. These provide convenient access ashore whichever side you are moored to, it is also particularly useful if you have a tender on davits allowing you to disembark from either side. You will note that the bathing platform on the 425 is larger than the 42,

owing to the 425 being just under a foot longer than its predecessor. The GRP radar arch hinges as standard using a gas ram lowering system. However, a button-operated electrical hydraulic system is a sought after option, which would have cost in the region of £5k in 2003. It is possible to retrofit an electric system, with a kit available directly from Broom. With the radar arch down the air draught becomes 3.3m (to the top of the windscreen) which is an essential feature for inland use or those wanting to travel the inland waterways down to the Med.
Hull and HandlingThe 42 and 425 are highly regarded sea boats and are very capable in a wide range of sea conditions, but their hull shape also makes them a perfect platform for slow speed inland work and displacement coastal adventures. Both models carry a similar hull DNA to the 38, a semi-displacement hull shape, with a fairly sharp entry at the bow and a deep, narrow keel. The bow lifts and the chines push the water aside. Flatter sections aft provide stability and low wake at slower inland speeds. The keel offers Broom’s reassuring manoeuvrability, but
also delivers protection to the sterngear. The propellers are set into tunnels in the hull, which allows a shallower angle and improved efficiency. We can’t praise the reassuring performance of these boats enough. When choppy conditions force planing hulls to slow down, these boats will often be able to continue on at a steady pace. They also have the remarkable ability to remain reasonably flat, even in turns. Not content with impeccable slow speed handling characteristics, most boats will be fitted with a bowthruster as well, for that extra bit of reassurance. It is worth examining the metal rubbing strake around the circumference of the boat, paying close attention to the corners of the bathing platform. Coloured hulls were offered with the 425 model at the cost of £1,500, navy blue being a popular colour. Be aware that a seasonal polish may be needed to maintain its lustre.
EnginesInitially, the 42 was offered with single or twin diesel shaftdrive engines, but later in build, only twin engine installations were available. In 2002/3 the base engine option fitted was a single Perkins Sabre M135hp giving 8 knots. A common

ConclusionThe capabilities of the Wolstenholme-Broom hull are unsurpassed. They may be expensive, but they are superbly versatile and capable boats, easily managed by two and offering excellent accommodation. A great choice for liveaboard adventures, inland or coastal.
Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a YDSA or a IIMS accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.
twin engine option was a pair of 200hp Volvo TAMD41’s, with further options of 250hp Yanmar 6LP-DTE’s, 285hp Volvo KAMD300’s, Perkins Sabre 265Ti’s, and 300hp, 350hp and 420hp versions of the Yanmar 6LP-STE. These boats should achieve speeds ranging from 18-28 knots. By 2006, twin engine options started with a pair of 225hp and topped out at a pair of 440hp for similar speeds. When the 425 was launched, Broom once again offered a single engine option, although you will find that most boats will have the twin configuration. Engine options were predominantly Volvo Penta D series, starting with a single 370hp D6 (priced at £352,059), and twins ranging from 225hp D4’s to 435hp D6’s. Top of the range, and the most powerful option, was twin Yanmar 6LY3-STP 440hp engines, this boat was priced at £416,948 in 2007. A 425 fitted with a single Volvo D6 370hp should give a top speed of 18 knots, while boats fitted with the twin configurations, 225hp to 440hp, should offer speeds of 18-29 knots respectively. When it comes to cruising speeds, a 425 fitted with twin D6 370hp, which were
the most popular engine option, should cruise happily at 21 knots and offer a top speed of 25 knots. An example fitted with the largest Volvo option, twin D6 435hp engines, will cruise at 23 knots and provide a top speed of 28 knots. The common rail Volvo engines are regarded as giving comparable performance, cleaner running and better fuel efficiency, perhaps making them the most desirable but, with modern engines such as these, while routine service tasks are ‘DIYable’, faultfinding is more likely to require the assistance of a service agent. Engine access is not great. A large, carpeted hatch in the saloon floor gives access to the top of the engines, to the raw water strainers, header tanks and dipsticks. In addition, the aft cabin companionway stairs lift for access to the back of the engines and propshafts. Any major servicing tasks, such as replacing fuel filters, will involve rolling back the carpet and lifting the saloon floor. As you would expect, the bigger the engines, the less space there is to work with. Access is generally better for the port engine, with the back of the starboard engine accessible
Volvo D6 435hp pictured. Access to the back of the engines is via the aft companionway steps
through the dinette seating. It is worth noting that boats fitted with single engines have two 92.4-gallon (420 litre) fuel tanks and twin-engine boats have two 138-gallon tanks (627 litre), these are located outboard of the engines. With fuel economy of approximately 1 mile per gallon at cruising speed for twin configurations, you should expect a safe range of around 260 miles on full tanks. We would recommend checking the bilges, sternglands and skin fittings for leaks, and also having a general look over the engines for signs of corrosion. It is important to check that regular servicing
and maintenance has been carried out. Volvo Penta and Yanmar engines are considered reliable, with good availability of parts and UK-wide support.

Ron & Rowena Stevenson Broom 425Our first boat was a Skilso Artic 975, a great little Norwegian-built, semi-displacement cruiser with twin Volvo 130hps. Then we had a brief 6-month foray into planing hulls with a Hardy Seawings 355. Next a Hardy Commander 32, which was an absolutely superb boat. Our first experience of the command bridge was a friends Broom 10/70, which converted us to the layout, and in 2007 we bought a Broom 39kl. With this we experienced the advantage of Brooms factory service and support. When we asked whether the cocktail cabinet could be adapted to take a Gordons Gin bottle, the answer was “anything, if it is at all possible”. The twin Yanmar 260hp engines
Ron and Rowena logged over 500 hours in their 39kl, Sunniva, with trips to Paris and Holland
gave us a comfortable cruising speed of 18 knots, and they never let us down in over 500 hours cruising in six years. We logged an average fuel consumption of 1.05mpg over one 348.4-mile holiday cruise. In 2013 we decided to trade up to a 425. Savannah Blue was for sale with a few unique features, a blue hull, hull portholes, bespoke carpentry and was one of the last to be built under the ownership of Martin Broom. The layout is the same as our 39kl, only with more interior and cockpit space. It is fitted with twin Volvo D6 370hp’s for a comfortable 20-knot cruising speed with similar economy as the 39kl, so we are not always last at the bar. We liked the fact that the 425 offered our guests an ensuite and the passage to the master suite provided enough space for an in-built washing machine, which has proved very useful. As far as interior fit out went, we always opted for the dinette version and very little can be said to criticise the quality either. One significant point on the 425 was the fact that when cruising, it didn’t have such a high bow angle as the 39kl or the Hardy. It is very hard to criticise either the 39 or 425, as you get what is on the label, well-built boats with factory-based service and support.

When it comes to sportsfishers, I doubt there is a bigger market than just across the Channel
in France. Visit any French marina, particularly in the north, and you will be greeted by a sea of small, wheelhouse boats. It should come as no surprise then that two of the biggest names in this style of boat hail from France and, if anyone should know how to build a good example, it is the French behemoth that is Group Beneteau. Not only do they produce the extensive Jeanneau Merry Fisher range, Jeanneau being part of Group Beneteau since 1995, but they also churn out another self-branded range called Antares. Having started building Peche Promenade boats over 50 years ago, you would expect Beneteau to have pretty much nailed the concept. We take a look at the two latest Antares models, a name that in itself has been part of Group Beneteau for over 40 years, to see if they live up to their history and reputation. The Antares 7 & 8 we are testing here
are replacements for
space in the bow. This forward section offers good sitting headroom and comes with an opening port and overhead hatch. This area is best described as simple and functional. It serves a purpose, but don’t expect too much in the way of luxuries. Just aft of this, on the starboard side and below the helm console, is the boat’s toilet compartment. This has just 4ft 6in headroom, so it is seated operations only, but comes with the basic facilities to make a stay onboard comfortable. There does not appear to be an option to have a shower in this compartment, probably due to the lack of hot water, although with some ingenuity I am sure that could be overcome if you wanted to be independent of marinas during an extended stay. Moving aft into the wheelhouse and you will find one of the most important
changes on this model over the outgoing 780. The dinette is still to port, but now it consists of a forward and aft double bench seat. The important change is found in the forward seat, which now has a removable two-position backrest to provide a forward facing navigator’s seat. This would be perfect for one, but could accommodate two underway at a squeeze. In this mode, you will find a convenient grab handle right in front of you and some useful storage alongside. There is also a nice large sliding window to allow cabin ventilation while underway or at rest. The dinette, as you would expect, also converts into a double berth, which is slightly larger than that of the 780. The wheelhouse itself comes with excellent headroom of 6ft 11in aft, reducing to a still very generous 6ft

existing models. The 7 replaces the 680 and the 8, the 780, but the new models offer a little more than just a facelift, they come with some useful family cruising features not present on the outgoing models.
Antares 8Sportsfishers of this size boast accommodation for a family, and theoretically you could certainly sleep three or four onboard with the facilities provided. Having said that, if you want to spend more than the odd night, the Antares 8 is probably a better prospect with just a couple onboard. Up in the bow there is a generous double diagonal berth of around 6ft by 4ft with some good storage below. If you choose the optional bow thruster, some of this storage is given over to the motor, electricals and dedicated battery that it comes with. To make the best of the berth you do need to install a small cushion on the aft corner, which eats a little into your standing floor
The Antares 8 wheelhouse is versatile when underway, or at rest, and offers an occasional double

4in forward. Overhead there is an optional sliding hatch that can be locked open, closed or ajar depending upon requirements. In the dinette, there is lined storage under both seats, as well as a further locker in the floor of the raised plinth that it sits on. The wheelhouse also has further bilge storage in the floor, accessed by a pair of lifting hatches that also reveal the toilet inlet seacock and the boat’s fresh water tank and pump. The
boat’s main electrical switchgear can be found behind a cupboard door on the inboard end of the aft dinette seat. Opposite the dinette is the galley. Again this is quite simple, but perfectly functional for an occasional onboard meal, hot snack or just a cold beer. There is a 12 volt fridge, which comes as an option or as part of one of the ‘packs’, a single burner gas hob and a nice big sink. As well as the additional storage located around the wheelhouse, the galley also has a single large cupboard beneath the hob. The helm is located just in front of the galley, and the helm bucket seat swings out of the way to create a useful amount of galley work surface. The seat comes with a lifting bolster, and there is 6ft 4in of headroom for comfortable helming while standing, plus a footrest for when seated. There is an infill for the floor of the helm that reduces headroom by four inches
and which would be useful for shorter or younger helms. The helm console is simply laid-out and there is space to fit a large multi-function display with some repositioning of other helm instruments and controls. The large windscreen comes as standard with a single wiper, with a second one available on the options list. A set of wheelhouse curtains from the options list allow you to completely enclose the wheelhouse, including the front screen, for added privacy when overnighting. The cockpit is accessed via a single large sliding door which can be secured in three positions. The wheelhouse roof provides an overhang with over six foot headroom for some weather protection in the forward part of the cockpit. A light on the underside of this overhang is a useful feature when onboard overnight. The base boat comes with a transom seat
that slides forward to allow the engine to tilt fully out of the water. Optional cockpit accessories include modular seating with integral storage along the port side and behind the wheelhouse doors. This in turn can convert into a good sized sunpad, or you can opt for a cockpit table to create an accommodating al fresco seating area. In the two forward corners of the cockpit there are steps that lead up to the sidedecks. The starboard one of these houses the boat’s single cylinder gas locker. The side decks are asymmetrical, the starboard one being the favoured route forward, and very easy to negotiate, at around nine inches wide. Having said that, the port deck is still very useable, and is only a couple of inches narrower. Safety-wise, both have good toerails, grabrails on the aft end, and all along the top of the wheelhouse and guardrails that rise just

as you ascend the decks to around knee height all the way forward. Up at the bow there is a decent anchor locker beneath a large lid that also conceals the optional electric winch. A small bowsprit on our model also incorporated the Scandinavian oriented bow access ladder that is part of the ‘Nordic’ options pack. At the transom there is a small transom gate and a step out onto the starboard side bathing platform. Under this step there is a large useful wet locker and on the platform a recessed bathing ladder. The port side platform appears to be an option that, without direct access from the cockpit or any form of ladder, may seem to be little more than decorative. Having said that, you can step across behind the engine, when it is lowered, and it would be useful if you needed to access the port side of the engine for any maintenance reasons while on the water.
UnderwayWe tested the Antares 8 with the largest, 200hp, engine option. Our test boat was fitted with a 16in x 18.5in prop, which Beneteau later said wasn’t the best option.
We understand that now it would come with a 16 x 20, so our experience and figures may be slightly different to what you could expect. As tested, the 8 jumped
The 7’s cabin is more open plan, due to the lack of a forward bulkhead, and a bit smaller all round
up onto the plane in around 6 seconds, and hit a 20 knots cruise in around 11 seconds. These figures aren’t particularly fast, but seem very acceptable for the type of boat. In a choppy head sea, the new hull design behaved admirably as long as you kept the engine trimmed in and eased back a little on the throttle. The narrow bow certainly helps in this respect, although the flipside to this was that we experienced lots of spray on the windscreen. This is where the extra wiper really helps, but due to their arcing action there did remain a large section of the screen in the middle unwiped. Apart from this, the wheelhouse offers excellent visibility all around and the helming position, both seated and standing was very comfortable. As mentioned, the acceleration was more cruiser than sportsboat, and the noise and aggression
evident from the engine did not always match the feel at the helm. The hull could handle tight turns well, with the bow dropping and digging in nicely, although push it too far and the prop will start to slip. The steering is light and balanced at slow speeds, but under hard acceleration and fast speeds you do get some feedback from the torque, which you have to counter. Although we hit speeds of over 30 knots, this is a boat that feels comfortable, and cruises effortlessly, at around 18-20 knots. At this speed it could motor all day into any sort of sea that you are likely to be out intentionally in, without any trouble. In short, driven sensibly, the Antares 8 is a boat that will look after you.
Antares 7In many ways the 7 is very similar to the 8, so much so that it is difficult to tell them The 7 has an offset double for overnighting, and a small but separate toilet compartment

apart when out on the water. It is almost like someone put an 8 on the photocopier and pressed the 80% reduction button, so we’ll just focus on the main differences. Having said that, I am going to start with a similarity. The 7 also boasts a separate toilet compartment, and this is important because it is one of the big upgrades over the 680 that it replaces. Like the 8, this compartment has sitting headroom only,
options are also the same as the 8. Even the headroom is almost completely maintained with between 6ft 6in and 6ft 2in throughout the wheelhouse. Out in the cockpit, there is again a sea of sameness. The same optional seating, dinette sunpad area, the same transom arrangement with two bathing platforms, even the same access forward to the bow, albeit with a squeeze on both sidedecks at
but a separate compartment is a useful feature on a boat of this size. Elsewhere in the wheelhouse, the only significant difference is that it is open plan between the dinette and the forward berth area. The helm console is slightly smaller, but I suspect you could still squeeze in a 10 inch display if needed, and the dinette is perhaps more suited to two. The galley appears identical and wheelhouse storage
7.5 inch and 5in for the starboard and port decks respectively. Like the 8, the 7 we are testing is also fitted with the largest engine option, but this time it is a 175hp motor.
UnderwayDespite testing the two boats on the same day, conditions were very different. The afternoon wind had picked up considerably, meaning we were out in a

F5-6 with quite a large wave pattern. In spite of this, the 7 was able to maintain a constant 12-14 knots into fairly short 1m seas, a useful get-you-home speed should you get caught out. With careful use of the throttle, this could be edged up to an average 16-18 knots without the boat feeling uncomfortable or out of shape. Going with the direction of the waves, these speeds could be increased further. On occasions, when we tried to push it, and got it wrong, we were rewarded with a large jolt and an awkward landing, and yet I still came away impressed with the boats plucky performance. Despite having the largest engine option, it occasionally felt a little short on torque to help power up waves, or quickly increase speed after throttling off. Acceleration from standing is good, but the mid range felt a bit ‘lacklustre’. Like the 8, the 7 digs in and turns well, but is also prone to prop ventilation if taken too tight, too quickly. At the helm you get a good commanding view, and all round visibility is good,

ConclusionThe sportsfisher market is a crowded place in which to compete, but in these two models Beneteau has a pair of worthy contenders. Size aside, they are very, very similar boats and both capable of delivering a great experience for a couple, with the 8 perhaps better suited for a family. The 7 can be easily towed behind a car, if you need that flexibility, or either would be perfect for marina or drystack boating. They both have good manners on the water and the 7, in particular, impressed me with its abilities for its size. Ultimately it will probably come down to price, and on that score the 7 looks to
except to port when turning tightly in the same direction, as the wheelhouse roof blocks your view. One area where the boats smaller size was felt was at the helm, where I would have liked a little bit more space for my feet when standing, so that I could get them forward of my centre of gravity. Overall, the 7 performed admirably in conditions that you would not choose to be out in on a boat of this size, and I am not sure that the extra size and weight of the 8 would have made a significant difference.
be a cracker, offering almost everything that the 8 does, in a considerably more affordable package.
The Antares 7 test boat had a foredeck sunpadEasy access. The 8’s sidedecks are asymmetrical and it has a bowsprit for boarding at the bow
