Welcome to the August issue. Our web man has been busy this month tweaking motorboatowner.co.uk. The most important change is that we now have a full library of back issues available to download. Just log in to the subscriber’s area and click on the ‘back issues’ tab in the tool bar. Other news this month is that our project boat is finished. We have spent the budget, and she is ready for the water. There is one

not so minor issue holding us back, and you can read all about that on page 52, but in our excitement I started looking at where we are going to take her for her maiden voyage. This threw up a question. Where have all our slipways gone? Around 40 years ago we used to take our family trail boat all over the place, and I recall the variety of public slips that we used. Most of these were free, and there was always somewhere to

leave the car and trailer. Today, I am struggling to find a suitable ramp for our first trip. Many are now in private ownership, which is fine except for the quite astronomical fees that some charge. One local slipway charges £30 per day, plus more for car parking. If we stay overnight that would be a bill of around £80, plus overnight berthing. Worse still are the slipways that do not have any parking facilities, the land probably long since sold off for development. They might as well not have any water for all the use they are. I imagine that councils see slipways as an easy cull when it comes to looking for budget cuts, it’s sad, but I cannot see the trend being reversed. My plea then is this; if you are in control of a slipway, please keep the charges affordable and the facilities available for all. Finally, if you have a local slipway that deserves some credit let us know, we’ll happily give them a plug, and maybe even pop along ourselves with a little green boatin tow. From the Editor

Installation All of the systems

here are very simple to install. There are

no external power requirements and

the most difficult part is deciding where

to site the components, and pushing

the very stubborn sanitation hose onto

the various components. Talking of

hose, old hoses often allow the smell to

permeate through them so it may be an

idea when installing a system like this

to think about replacing the inlet hose

at the same time. A good quality, odour

free, ¾ inch inlet hose will cost around

£4.50 per metre. Ultimately, although we fitted the

Jabsco model, the process is much

the same for any of the solutions mentioned. You need to cut into the sea

water inlet pipe and make a few new

connections. Here’s how we did it.

RYA kill cord and kill switch failure surveyThe Royal Yachting Association (RYA) are encouraging boaters to take part in an online survey, asking whether they have “ever had a kill cord or kill switch failure?” The RYA has championed the use of kill cords on small open powerboats for many years and say ‘the kill cord message remains as important as ever’. The survey, found here, examines causes of kill cord failure other than human error and

should take only a few minutes to complete. ‘The results help us better understand what problems boaters are experiencing so that we are able to shape future advice, training and work with manufacturers’, the RYA added. The survey closes on Wednesday 30 September and you can find more useful safety information about kill cords on the website. Kill cord stickers (pictured) are now available from the RYA Training Department by emailing [email protected]

New and used boat dealer Thames Boat Sales is expanding and opening an office in Southampton. Founded in 1992 Thames Boat Sales, incorporating Penton Hook Marine Sales and Bray Marine Sales, is opening an office on the 1st September 2015 at MDL’s Mercury Yacht Harbour on the River Hamble. The new operation, run by Alexander Legge, will offer both sail and power brokerage, as well as the new boat brands Aquanaut, English Harbour Yachts, Sheerline and Sealine, a brand that has been notably absent from the south coast and the River Hamble for a few years. Directors, Chris Manners and Dominic Smulders, said “a south coast operation was a logical next step to enable us to bring our award winning customer service to the area and allow us to better serve new and existing customers.” The company will also be rebranding the whole operation, including the website and its new name will be announced officially shortly. Full details coming soon.

With the America’s World Cup Series (23-26th July)and the Great Britain team housed in Portsmouth’s Camber Dock, KB Boat Park Dry Stack had to be relocated earlier this year. The dry stack had been operating for over 10 years, when in 2014 the announcement that Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) would be based at the dock, flagged up the need to reposition its business. Director Tim Anderson had no objections in moving to make way for the impressive BAR headquarters, he said “Our biggest challenge was to make the best use of our new, much smaller site, and get the new dry stack ready in time for the 2015 season.” With only three months for building and with the help of dry stack specialists Wickens Engineering and Portsmouth City Council, 120 boats were moved into the new four tier stack on the south side of Camber Dock.

BUILDING BOATS THAT GO TO SEA

Over the past few years Bembridge Harbour has seen many improvements taken place and, currently, planning is being discussed for a new building at the top of the Duver pontoon ramp. This will house eight new toilets and showers, doubling the current number available, a laundry facility and the harbour administration and berthing offices. Five houses will be built where the old toilets, showers and admin offices are now situated. In addition, plans have also been drawn up to improve the facilities for the permanent berth holders in Bembridge Marina in the north west corner of the harbour. The ex-harbour office will be demolished to

make way for new toilets and showers and a development of 8 houses. A new, larger, car park for berth holders will also be built on the opposite side of Embankment Road. The houses will be sold to finance these improvements, which in turn, it is hoped, will attract more visitors to the harbour.

This summer Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) officials are warning boat owners of the risks of using portable gas camping stoves, barbecues, lamps and heaters onboard boats, which can lead to explosion, fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. This warning follows a gas cooker explosion this June that injured a mother and daughter at Westview Marina, Cambridgeshire, leaving them needing hospital treatment. BSS manager, Graham Watts explains, ‘Boaters need to treat all portable gas equipment with huge respect. Out in the open, an explosion, fire, or carbon monoxide escape, can be bad enough, but in the poorly ventilated, tight confines of a boat, the same event can be devastating. Where a simple cooker is needed aboard, think about installing a marine spirit stove as an alternative to a portable gas stove.’ As a result it has issued the following advice to boaters - only use portable appliances onshore, stow any canisters, used or unused, and any appliance if it has a canister inserted, in a self-draining gas locker, or on open deck where any escaping gas can flow overboard, check the appliance’s condition and that it is assembled correctly, and finally, don’t use the appliance if you smell or hear gas leaking. The BSS is also discouraging the use of gas lanterns favouring battery powered or wind-up LED lights. In addition the BSS released a summer safety message concerning the risks from lit or cooling barbecue charcoal and using barbecues aboard boats. It said ‘We love barbecues, but never on a boat. Use them ashore, enjoy them safely and avoid the risks of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning’.

Portable gas appliances ‘know the risks this summer’ say BSS

Long Walk Round Alex ‘takes on’ IrelandAlex Ellis-Roswell left Kent in September last year on a mission to walk clockwise around Britain to raise money and awareness for the RNLI. He has now walked 3000 miles and raised £7K for the charity so far. However, ambitious Alex recently decided to take on Ireland as well. In his blog he said “Right now it feels like this could be one of the most stupid things I’ve ever decided to do and it’s a bit scary. It’s going to be another 2500 miles of walking on top of the 7000 I’d already planned to do round Britain. But it also

feels like the right time, and the right thing to do.” “I’ll get back around spring next year and start walking north up the west coast of Scotland.” he added. You can follow his progress via the Long Walk Round website, Twitter (#LongWalkRound) and Facebook.

‘Look after your lifejacket’ say RYAIn a recent message to it’s members, Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Cruising Manager, Stuart Carruthers, addressed the importance of getting lifejackets serviced. He said “I have had some correspondence recently about the lack of availability and cost of replacement items to enable owners to do their own servicing. Particularly replacement rearming kits and parts. It is argued that this makes it difficult for lifejacket owners to do their own servicing. The question is should you be servicing your own lifejacket? Most lifejacket manufacturers recommend that their products are serviced annually by approved service stations, although some may extend this to two years for privately owned lifejackets. Your lifejacket is an important piece of technical safety equipment and there are some tests that simply cannot be done by a DIYer.” He went on to offer further advice on how to check your lifejacket regularly and how it actually works. He adds “Recent RNLI lifejacket clinics have found that in excess of 30% of lifejackets brought in for inspection would not have worked in an emergency. Those who have their lifejackets serviced according to the manufacturer’s instructions, check them at regular intervals, and have a spare rearming kit available, should not have serious concerns.” Click here to see the RYA’s statement.

Poole Harbour Boat Show 2016 and 2017 announcedAfter being hailed a ‘resounding success’ with more than 15,000 visitors reported, Poole Harbour Commissioners have announced future dates for the free-entry Poole

Harbour Boat Show. There will also be a third day, a Friday, added to the weekend show. The dates are 20th-22nd May 2016 and 19th-21st May 2017. The 2017 show will also coincide with European Maritime Day, which includes a important marine conference and showcase of international maritime sectors.

NEWS

Traditional Boat FestivalSadly the 35th 2014 Thames Traditional Boat Rally, due to be held at Fawley Meadows, Henley-on-Thames, had to be cancelled due to severe winter flooding. However, with a new committee, a new name, and new ideas to attract a greater and more diverse audience, the organisers set to work to formulate a very ambitious and entertaining programme for the weekend of July 18th and 19th 2015. Chairman, John Skuse, said the committee hoped the Festival would ‘be bigger and better than ever before’. Well, they will

be absolutely delighted with the way the weekend went as participants, exhibitors and spectators came to Henley in their droves, and of course, there were the boats, in every shape and form, polished and gleaming in the sunshine. It is reported that over 10,000 people attended the 2-day festival. The line up for the weekend was very impressive and included, the Queen’s Row Barge, Gloriana, restored Motor Torpedo Boat 102, Sir Malcolm Campbell’s Bluebird K3 as well as electric, steam and

amphibious craft, open and cabin launches and motor cruisers. Each class performed a sailpast flotilla along the Henley Regatta, mile long course. Undoubtedly, the stars of the festval were the Dunkirk Little Ships, and when the last of these 25 beautifully restored boats passed the commentary box, the huge crowds assembled along the riverbank erupted with applause. Bluebird K3 was due to do a run along the regatta course, for which the Environmental Agency temporarily closed the river. On the Saturday it was towed to the start line and the crowds waited

in quiet anticipation for the noise of the engine. The engine started but sadly, due to a small fire in the engine bay, it was not able to complete both runs, but what a fantastic vessel to see afloat all the same. There was a fly past by a Royal Navy Lynx helicopter, an aerobatic display from the Chang Gang display team, boat rides, a boat jumble, classic car displays and stalls for various societies, clubs, boat builders, marine equipment and clothing. The entertainment continued into the evening with trophy presentations, food, music and dancing in the large marquee.

STAR LETTERS

Lifejacket musingsLETTER 1 I read your editorial about the drowning incident on the Orca with some interest. I own a Hardy 25 which is used mainly in the Solent. This boat has a cabin and a hard-topped wheelhouse. Most of the time, except in very warm and sunny weather, the cockpit is covered with a canopy secured with turn buckles. Only the door flaps are zipped. This makes the boat totally enclosed when in normal use. As opposed to those who sail, we do not normally venture out on deck whilst underway. My partner and I both recognised the potential danger of being trapped, if the boat sank quickly. As a result we both use manual inflation lifejackets not automatic models. We feel that the probability of drowning by being ejected into the sea from an enclosed wheelhouse whilst incapacitated or unconscious is tiny, and much lower than that of being trapped in a sinking boat by an inflated lifejacket. A manual lifejacket would improve our ability to escape from the enclosed wheelhouse and can still be inflated once we are in open water, doubly important as by now the boat will have sunk. The safety conscious aviation industry take the same approach. Airliners are supplied with manual inflation lifejackets so, in the event of a ditching, passengers can first escape the aircraft, then inflate the lifejacket when clear of the plane. David Johns

I understand that the Port of London Authority (PLA) has launched a new Thames safety campaign aiming to look after vulnerable river users. PLA’s dedicated recreation harbour master, Jon Beckett explains on the website “we want to make skippers of motor cruisers, and commercial vessels, more aware of the vulnerabilities of smaller, more exposed vessels.” Last year we were taking our 35ft boat up the Thames for the first time. Unfortunately we developed a problem that meant going through London on one engine. As we were able to steer and control the boat on the one engine we continued on for Richmond Lock. Just after Kew Bridge we were met by a swarm of rowing skiffs coming in the opposite direction. I courteously slowed our already slow speed to idle. They did not alter course. Being careful not to go aground or loose control in the falling tide, I maneuvered further over to starboard, stopping at one point. Then, to our utter amazement we were bombarded with unrepeatable expletives. As we had children onboard we were very upset by this. It seemed that our very presence on the river had incensed them somehow, yet we had done nothing wrong. It is a scary enough situation visiting London by boat, let alone a disabled boat, but common courtesy and decency should work both ways in my opinion. Ted LawsonEditor replies: I have experienced something similar myself so I know how frustrating it is. Education clearly needs to be a two way street. Well done for doing the right thing and I hope it didn’t spoil your first visit to a fantastic river.

Non-tidal Thames visitors beware

I’m loving the magazine. It is aimed right at my level of boating where the emphasis is on affordable boating, rather than the glitzy end that requires an amount of money that I’m sure the majority of us don’t have. The adverts showing boats for sale are also important. More would be welcome. Keep up the good work. Steve HewittThe Editor replies: Thanks Steve, I am glad that we hit the spot. Used boat ads are an important part of any mag, and we will do our best to bring you a good selection.

Keep up the good work

LETTER 2 I was interested in your musing about lifejackets last month and it brought to mind two thoughts. In my early marine life I spent a lot of time sailing dinghies and was taught from the start to always carry a knife with me when afloat, it is a piece of vital safety equipment. Perhaps that is something those who haven’t grown up with all the lines that sailing entails should bear in mind. My second thought is whether we should buy manual or automatic life jackets. I switched from manual to automatic when I was sailing a 10-metre sailing boat with a potentially lethal boom which had the capacity to both knock me out, and knock me over the side. Arguably you are much more likely to be conscious when you go overboard from a motorboat, so maybe a manual lifejacket is more appropriate. Mark PullenEditor replies: A manual lifejacket does sound like it may be the answer, just make sure that guests on board understand how to inflate them. It’s a good idea to adopt aircraft style safety briefings when boating with new guests.

o you dread being the first to use your boat toilet after it’s been unused for while? Is it because you know that the first flush will fill the whole boat with a rotten egg smell so bad that everyone will be forced to abandon the boat in search of fresh air? Are you fed up having to explain to non-boaters what the smell is, and reassure them that it’s not you? If so, read on. Many of us have boats that suffer with this problem and it seems to affect some boats, while leaving others moored in the same place sweet smelling. The smell does

particularly nasty gas that is more than just an embarrassment and annoyance; it is toxic and harmful to both you and your boat. Like carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide interferes with your respiratory system and in a confined space in a high enough concentration it can even cause death. If that wasn’t enough, it is also flammable and, in the right concentrations, explosive. It also has the effect of paralyzing your sense of smell. In other words, after a while, you stop being able to detect it by smell but if someone new comes on the boat, they immediately

gradually fade with each flush until, a few flushes later, the smell is completely gone. Unfortunately, leave you boat for a week or so and it’s back in its full glory. The smell is hydrogen sulphide, a

Hydrogen sulphide is the by-product of anaerobic decay, that is decay that occurs in the absence of oxygen. Many boat owners think the problem can be cured by flushing chemicals and cleaners down the toilet, but this is not the case. The decay is happening in the pipe work before the toilet and when you flush for the first time you are bringing this stagnant water, and the hydrogen sulphide and pungent odour within it, into the toilet bowl. Putting anything down the toilet will only treat the system from the toilet onwards. Basically every boat has a length of pipe, usually two or three metres in length, between the toilet intake seacock and the toilet itself. This pipe will always contain a few litres of sea or river water, and this water will have organic matter suspended within

it. This organic matter, such as algae, plankton and bacteria, require oxygen and light to survive and, when the water is left in the pipe for any length of time, the oxygen within it becomes depleted and the organic matter dies. This dead organic matter will now start to decay and, due to the lack of oxygen, it will decay anaerobically and produce hydrogen sulphide.

What is the cause of the problem?

A rotten egg smell coming from your toilet is caused by decaying organic matter

notice it. I mentioned that it was harmful to your boat and this is because it is corrosive to metal components. Evidence of this is often found on the taps and shower head in toilet compartments where the surface of these items can be found to be oxidized and in a poor state, compared to taps in the galley which are the same age and often identical. This issue is aggravated by the fact that when hydrogen sulphide gas is dissolved in water, something that is rather abundant in a toilet/shower compartment, it creates a weak acid.

The simplest way is to regularly flush your toilet. Boats that are used everyday never suffer this problem as their toilets are not left idle for any length of

time. For those of us who have to work during the week this is not practical, so we need to look for other solutions.

How can the problem be cured?

Fresh water flush If your boat has adequately sized freshwater tanks, you can convert your toilets from raw water flush to fresh water. This cures the problem completely because the fresh water contains no organic material, the chlorine that it is supplied with will see to that. With nothing to die,

Part time fresh water flush By this we mean a system whereby you can flush with fresh water just when it matters, and use raw water the rest of the time. The easiest way to achieve this is to add a small, circa 10 litre, water tank that you can fill with fresh tap water. This is then placed near the toilet seacock with a diverter valve fitted into the sea water intake pipe, and an extra piece of pipe routed into the small tank. Now you can use raw water to flush the toilet when you are on board, and use fresh water to flush

the toilet for the last time before you leave the boat. This will leave chlorine treated freshwater in the pipework while you are away and eliminate the death and decay that causes the rotten egg smell. It would be quite easy to make a kit up for a system like this but for little more than the sum of its parts you can buy something ready produced. The Flush-It kit from Lee Sanitation is easy to fit and does the business. It’s a bit of a faff having to remove the tank from the bilge, fill it and replace it, but the benefit outweighs the effort.

there is nothing to decay and the problem simply doesn’t occur. Again this is not a solution that will suit the majority of boaters. Many boats don’t have the fresh water capacity to be able to afford to flush it down the toilet but don’t worry, there are other solutions.

Water treatment systems These are plumbed into the seawater inlet pipe and ‘treat’ the water before it gets to the toilet bowl. As well as helping to keep the bacteria down, these treatments also add a nice smell to the flushing water to help disguise any nastiness that might be lurking. Lee Sanitation lead the market in affordable water treatment kit, starting with their Head Treatment System, a cost effective unit designed to treat the water between the hand pump and the bowl. The unit costs just £17.53 although the treatment solution is £10 per bottle. How long a bottle last will depend on how often you use the toilet. The next level up is the Adjustable Head Treatment System, which is designed for a more persistent problem. As the name suggests, the unit can be adjusted depending upon the level of the problem, and is designed to be plumbed in near to the inlet seacock, thus treating the water almost from the point it enters the boat. The unit costs £78.34 and the tablets it requires are between £5 and £6 depending on how many you buy at a time. Again, these tablets longevity is related to how often the toilet is flushed. We currently have one of these units on test and will report back on its performance soon. Another product that does a very similar thing is the Jabsco Toilet Fresh System as shown being fitted in this feature. Unfortunately just after fitting it, the product was withdrawn and is not being replaced. There are still a few out there at chandleries so if you wanted this

particular model it can still be bought for less than the £40 RRP. It works with tablets that cost around £8 for five. Jabsco tell us that these have also been withdrawn, so you’ll need to stock up while you can. The unit is quite large, so siting it is more difficult than with the previous products, and, as it is installed quite a way from the seacock, it leaves a large amount of untreated water in the intake pipework. The SeaSmart is a slightly more technical version of a water treatment system. It uses a small pipe to inject its deodorizing and sanitizing solution into the inlet water right by the seacock. It is electronic, and doses the water according to how often the toilet is being used, thus making the most of the sanitizer, which is good as it costs £23.50 a go. The unit itself runs from internal batteries and, because it is a little more complex than the others, costs £129.

Turn off the toilet inlet seacock. You may be working below the waterline so there is a risk of flooding

Disconnect the inlet pipe from your toilet. If it’s been on a few years it may be difficult to remove

Decide where you are going to mount the bracket. The unit should be above the waterline at all times and higher than the toilet bowl

Installation All of the systems here are very simple to install. There are no external power requirements and the most difficult part is deciding where to site the components, and pushing the very stubborn sanitation hose onto the various components. Talking of hose, old hoses often allow the smell to permeate through them, so it may be an idea when installing a system like this

to think about replacing the inlet hose at the same time. A good quality, odour free, ¾ inch inlet hose will cost around £4.50 per metre. Ultimately, although we fitted the Jabsco model, the process is much the same for any of the solutions mentioned. You need to cut into the sea water inlet pipe and make a few new connections. Here’s how we did it.

The inlet hose that was connected to the toilet is now pushed onto the other side of the non return valve

A new piece of hose is now connected to the unit’s outlet spigot. Very hot water will soften the hose, making it easier to push on

The other end of this new hose section is connected to the toilet. If you dont have access to hot water, try lubricating the spigot with washing up liquid

The unit is now fixed in place on the bracket installed earlier. It needs to be easily accessible for tablet replenishment

All that is left is to stick a tablet in, and activate the pump to fill the reservoir. The flushing water has a blue tinge and a pleasant odour

Q My partner loves boating but our work patterns often clash leaving me with time on my hands and no one to go out boating with on our 24 foot Sea Ray. This often leaves me wondering if I should go out on my own, but I am a but concerned about handling the boat and doing all the ropes and fenders without any help. Do you have any tips for single handing a small boat?

Single handing tips

A Single handing is actually not too difficult. It’s all about planning and preparation, and giving yourself plenty of time to do everything. I often single hand and usually find a quiet spot inside the harbour or marina with plenty of space. I then stop the boat dead in the water and deal with the ropes and fenders, while keeping an eye on my drift rate and any hazards such as other boats moving around. I use plenty of fenders on both sides so I am prepared in case the mooring up doesn’t go according to plan. On a boat like yours I would have a midships mooring line rigged, ready to tie on as soon as I got alongside. The bow and stern lines, as well as the springs, can then be dealt with easily, without fear of the boat drifting away. Without anyone else on board it becomes even more important not to fall off the boat. For this reason I would not venture onto the foredeck, or down the side decks of a small boat, so would fender from the cockpit, even if this meant only fendering the back half of the boat. Sometimes the marina may be able to offer assistance when berthing, so don’t be afraid to ask for it. Always wear your lifejacket and make sure you tell a land contact where you are going and when you expect to return and keep them up to date.

Q I have been looking for a nice example of the Cruisers International 224 from the late 80’s and came across a much newer boat called the Excalibur 244. The latter looks identical to the 224. Are they the same boat?

Excalibur 244

A A company called Excalibur Boats did briefly reintroduce Cruiser International boats under the name Excalibur. I understand they marketed a new version of the 224 called the 244, and a 267 reincarnation called the Excalibur 286. I am not sure how successful they were but I don’t recall ever seeing one, so it must be quite a rare beast.

Channel Islands anchoragesQ We are planning a late summer visit to the Channel Islands and prefer to anchor, rather than stay in marinas. Can you recommend me some anchorages around Guernsey and Jersey, as well as the smaller islands, where I could safely anchor overnight?

A Safe anchorages are dependent upon the right weather and wind direction, but here are a few that are worth considering. In Guernsey you have Havelet Bay, not perhaps the prettiest of anchorages, but convenient for the town of St Peter Port. If you want something with a little more seclusion, then Fermain Bay just to the south of St Peter Port can be a quiet spot if you avoid weekends or, if it’s not blowing a south westerly, Petit Port on the south coast. On Jersey I would suggest Bouley Bay on the north coast or St Brelades Bay, and in particular Beau Port, on the south coast. I also like Portelet Bay on the south coast, but this can be quite exposed. On Herm it’s got to be either Belvoir Bay or Shell Beach, and for Sark you could try Havre Gosselin on the West coast, or Dixcart and Derrible Bays on the east coast. Anchoring is one of boating’s great pleasures, I hope you enjoy the trip.

Q The zips on my canopy are stiff and notchy to use. Is there a product that I could apply to them that would ‘oil’ them up without leaving a residue that is likely going to mark clothing?

Caring for canopy zips

A There are a number of propriety products for both zips and poppers on boat canopies. I have used Surehold Snap-Stick and Starbrite Snap and Zipper Lubricant, both of which work well but do leave some residue behind that may get rubbed off by clothing. You could try a very light application of silicon spray or alternatively you could try rubbing some hard wax on the zip.

You can keep your zips silky smooth with a special lubricant

Belvoir Bay, east of Herm, is a stunning spot

A It’s a problem I have experienced myself so I know how you feel. Many boats like the SC29 will actually have outlets for the diesel heating placed beneath the cockpit windscreen for just this problem. An alternative is to fit a blown hot air system that works from the engine’s cooling water circuit just like a car. Kuranda supply a range of heater matrix that could be used to build such a system, or alternatively the 3055 from Heat-On would do the job. The biggest problem will be ducting the pipe work unobtrusively up to the helm. If you were very DIY orientated, you could probably make something suitable using an old car heater matrix, although with modern systems being incorporated into the dashboard you would probably have to look for something more modular, as fitted to older vehicles such as the Series Land Rovers. Alternatively, for a simple and cheaper option, you could try applying an anti-fogging agent, such as Rain X Anti Fog, to the inside of the windows.

Q On my Sealine SC29 I have a problem with the cockpit windows misting up, especially if I want an early morning start. Is there anything I can fit to help demist these windows?

Steamy windows

Q I am looking at buying a Fairline 40 fitted with twin Volvo TAMD61A engines. Can you tell me what sort of fuel consumption I will get out of this boat at various speeds?

Fairline 40

Two stroke outboards

A Small two-stroke outboards were indeed effectively banned from sale within the EU for leisure use back in 2006, but continue to be available to commercial users. It could well be that this engine you have been offered has a commercial background, or was possibly even bought outside of the EU where two-stroke outboards are still widely available. If it was commercial then the commercial seller is only supposed to sell it to other commercial users. If it was brought in from outside the EU by an individual, then officially it has been imported illegally. So the answer is that, yes it could well be a genuine 2010 two-stroke outboard, but its provenance is unknown and technically you should not be able to buy it.

Q I’m on the lookout for a decent used outboard for my tender and have been offered a two-stroke engine that is apparently dated 2010. I was told all small two-strokes were banned around 2006 so can this engine really be that new?

A Ultimately you will get around one nautical mile per gallon out of a boat of this size fitted with these engines when cruising on the plane, a bit less if you go everywhere flat out, and a good bit more if you stay at full displacement speeds. Volvo’s figures for this engine suggest a combined consumption of 36 lph at 1500rpm, 61 lph at 2000rpm, 95 lph at 2500rpm and 120 lph at 2800rpm. Once you know how fast this boat goes at each of these rev settings you can work out a fuel flow chart and your most economical cruising speed.

Q I own a Norman 20 with a 15hp outboard which is kept on the non-tidal Medway in Kent. Is this boat and engine combination capable of venturing onto the tidal Medway and the Thames estuary?

Going tidal in a Norman 20

A The Norman 20 was fitted with outboards up to 80hp and was capable of speeds in excess of 20 knots, so is more than up to the job of a bit of coastal and estuary cruising. Your biggest problem is likely to be the power of your outboard. With only 15hp on tap you are going to be restricted to displacement speeds and with some strong tides in the Medway and Thames estuary, you will need to work with the tides rather than trying to cruise against them. You will also need to consider the weather very carefully as you won’t be able to run for cover if things chop up, and you may find things could get very uncomfortable. Why not start with something simple like a weekend trip down to Rochester, Gillingham or Chatham, you should be able to carry the tide in both directions and experience some tidal cruising without leaving the relative shelter of the Medway.

Q As we are starting to venture further a field, I have been thinking about getting a PLB. It is extremely unlikely that I would have any reason to be on deck out at sea to risk going overboard but one never knows. Also in the unlikely event of needing to take to the life raft, I thought it would act as a location beacon. Can you recommend which is currently the most appropriate model?

Should I buy a PLB?

A With PLBs you have two options. You have the AIS types that would help the crew left on board locate you in the water, assuming the boat has an AIS receiver of course, or you have the EPIRB ones that will put out a distress signal to the larger world. I would suggest you take a look at the range from Ocean Signal. They make the smallest PLB, Personal AIS and EPRIB available. If you are planning on keeping something like this on your person, small is good. Personal AIS beacons have their limitations in terms of range, and typically only work up to a couple of miles. So, if you fell overboard and it went

unnoticed for 10 minutes, your boat could possibly be out of range. A personal PLB operating as an EPIRB will not help your crew find you in the water, and if it was choppy they may struggle to see you even if they are within a few hundred metres. So the ultimate MOB system for me would be an MOB alarm system to alert the helmsman/crew if someone goes overboard, coupled with a personal AIS on everyone’s lifejacket to direct them back to the casualty. On top of this I would add a boat EPIRB for a bigger problem that requires everyone onboard to abandon. This will alert the rescue services.

The Ocean Signal rescueME is said to be the smallest PLB at 75mm. The RRP price is £282

Other PLBs include the ACR ResQLink, McMurdo Fastfind 220 and the Kannad SafeLink Pro

Sealine has had so many successful sportscruisers through the years, the iconic 285 Ambassador, the entry-

level S23/25 and spacious S34. The list is endless. However, one particular model stand out above all others, a boat that can get a family out on the water in style and comfort, at an affordable price. It is the compact and very clever Sealine S28. So how did the model come about? The 285 Ambassador brought Sealine great success in the 1980’s, but by the early 90’s this 28ft boat had evolved into a much bigger, 30ft plus sportscruiser in the shape of its two curvy successors, the 290 and

bowsprit and a descending rubbing strake. The windscreen line is also easier on the eye, continuing past the radar arch all the way to the transom. This plucky little cruiser was able to face-off its main British rival at the time, the Fairline Targa 28/29, which had an almost identical layout, engine choices and performance. It showcased Sealine at its best. In 1998, when Sealine was rolling out the ‘S’ prefix across its sportscruiser range, the 28 Bolero became known as the S28. Very little changed, the most significant being that it was awarded newer, slightly larger engines. Sealine’s trademark two-

Sealine S28the later 310 Ambassador. This left a gap in the range, between the 270 Senator/Ambassador and the 310. So it was time for Sealine to bring an all-new 28ft sportscruiser to the table. The fresh-faced Sealine 28 Bolero made its debut at the 1995 Southampton Boat Show in September and boy did Sealine get it right. Whilst the model was similar to the 310, and others in the range, in terms of its sculpted styling and stripes, it had some new and very distinctive features. colour stripes also vanished at this time. The S28 was phased out in 2005 and was replaced that year by the S29 and SC29. With over 450 boats built over 10 years, the S28 is arguably one of Sealine’s best selling small sportscruisers of all time. Today it still looks modern and is loved by so many. With a little inside information we found out why these boats are so popular and successful.

bulkhead is the boats main electrical switch panel, with a little bit of space alongside to mount extra items, such as a 12 volt power outlet. Interior colours and finishes vary from boat to boat. Some have an all glossy wood-effect finish, while others have white-wash effect surfaces. Older boats may have patterned, woven or printed, cotton fabrics. These might not be to everyone’s taste, but are very hard wearing. Blue textured velour upholstery is common in younger models. The moulded, wash-down toilet compartment on the port side is a good size and is plenty big enough to shower in. Inside there is a manually operated toilet with a drop-down cover that forms a seat, two shelved storage lockers, a sink unit fitted with a shower mixer tap and

a small flat screen TV. Between the galley and the dinette area there is a good-size wardrobe with a shelf at the top. The boats L-shaped galley is set back to starboard giving clear access between the cockpit companionway and saloon. The galley has a double sink, a two-burner hob, both of which are covered, and plenty of worktop space besides. Storage is plentiful with eye-level cupboards, shelving, and large cupboard under the sink. While most boats will be fitted with a full gas oven some may have a microwave here instead. What the galley area does lack is a bin. The space under the companionway steps is wasted, so a possible modification could be made here. Under the galley floor there is a deep locker for galley storage, plus another lifting hatch to access the seacocks and shower sump. On the galley/cockpit

The accommodation is private with an open plan dinette forward and separate cabin aft. The galley has plenty of worktop space and a double sink. Various wood finishes were available, the all-cherry wood effect galley is attractive. Some S28’s have white wood-effect vertical surfaces

The saloon dinette converts into a wide 6ft double. Upholstery and finish varies between boatscompanionway, a large curved, tinted sliding door and down a steep flight of small wooden steps. In the saloon area Sealine’s traditional horseshoe-shaped bow dinette was banished, and replaced with a raised, long U-shaped seating area with a large oval table. It is ample for four to six people dining, or for two lounging. The table drops down and the area converts into an impressively wide 6ft guest double berth. There is a lack of privacy for guests sleeping in the saloon so on some boats a curtain may have been added across the base of the dinette. Lined lockers provide ample storage under each side. Under the dinette floor there is a cavernous locker in which you may find the holding tank, if fitted. Behind the dinette seat backs either side there are two deep lockers, ideal for storing sleeping bags and lifejackets, even

a larger storage locker underneath. It is worth investigating the adjoining carpets outside, as the shower base can leak due to failed sealant. Moving aft and through the narrow cabin door on the port side leads to the mid cabin. This is compact yet cosy, and has a useful ensuite access to the toilet compartment. A 4ft 5in wide double berth runs thwartships, with a back rest and plenty of room to sit up in bed and read. There is a small wardrobe with a lifting dresser top, a small area to stand up and change, plus three portholes to the cockpit and outside to let air and light flood in. There is a huge equipment locker at the foot of the bed that houses the calorifier, and provides access to wiring and some electrical components. There are also two useful hull lockers under the berth itself.

Whilst the boat is essentially a four-berth sportscruiser, being a little compact it is actually perfect for two people with occasional guests. Having a separate cabin does make it suitable for a family, perhaps with one or two smaller children, but the previous 290 and 310 models were, possibly, more family-friendly, as they offer twin berths in the mid cabin.

Cockpit and helmThe one level cockpit has a double helm seat which backs on to a four-person dinette-cum-sunpad area on the starboard side. On the port side there is a long sunlounger bench seat, with a wet bar with covered sink and locker unit aft. A fridge in this locker was a popular optional extra. There is plenty of storage in the cockpit with a liferaft locker inside the helm/dinette seat unit, and a long wet locker under the aft bench seat. Access to the bathing platform and ashore is via a transom gate on the port side. The cockpit dinette table lifts out or swings up to give easy access to the engines.

If you are looking to do sea work, it is important to look at the navigation equipment onboard. With some boats approaching 20 years old this kit may be due an upgrade. Dedicated space for a flush mounted multi-function display is in short supply, so some juggling of equipment may be required. The double helm seat is quite compact, but a luxury when compared to the single helm seat aboard some other similarly sized sportscruisers of the era. However, it could do with being a little higher. In the early 00’s Sealine was adding a navy blue coloured helm console to its sportscruiser ranges, this helped forward visibility by reducing the reflections off the shallow sloping windscreen. From a buyers point of view, it makes younger models easier to spot. The S28 comes with a fair bit of canopy to wrestle with, but luckily it is in two sections, each fixed to the radar arch. On most boats a continuous clear, wrap-around front screen can be removed, while keeping a bimini-shaped cover overhead. For the ‘wind-in-your-hair’ driving experience, the bimini section hinges back and is secured around the radar arch. Another clever feature is how the aft section of the canopy can be rolled up and

stowed in Sealine’s trademark clamshell stowage in the underside of the radar arch. It is ingenious. We would recommend checking the condition of the canopy carefully. A new canopy could set you back anything between £900-£2000.

On DeckThigh-high guardrails enclose the side decks and the raised foredeck, finishing at the radar arch, echoing the shape of the windscreen. With the cockpit table in place, stepping out on to the side decks is easiest on the port side, making use of a moulded step above the battery switch locker. The side decks are very good for a boat of this size, although these are somewhat pinched by the deck level navigation lights on each side. To avoid water running along the decks and into the sculpted engine air vents, Sealine added oval-shaped drains to the deck to direct the water away and out through a lower skin fitting. However, water often congregates inside these holes and goes green, making them a bugbear to clean. At the bow, a massive locker encloses the electric anchor winch with plenty of space spare for up to eight medium-sized fenders. The anchor chain itself is housed

in its own lower compartment so there is no risk of this getting entangled. While on deck it is worth examining around the top knuckle and along the leading edge of the radar arch. Unfortunately these areas are prone to stress cracking, but don’t worry, any damage here tends to be cosmetic, not structural.

Hull and HandlingThe S28 has an excellent hull and performs admirably in most sea conditions. The ride is soft and sure-footed. Like many outdrive-powered, planing hulled boats, it is very susceptible to cross winds or weight induced lean. It is likely to flop from side to side if people move about on board, which can be quite alarming to those not versed. This is particularly noticeable with only two onboard. Therefore it is important to ensure that the trim tabs are working correctly, particularly if you plan to do a lot of sea work. The Eltrim tab motors that are often fitted are prone to water ingress and failure if the rubber boots haven’t been changed regularly. Weight saving is key for performance for boats like this, and with this in mind

it is important to be aware that much of the storage and weight, is along the starboard side. To help counteract this, Sealine placed the batteries, and moulded in ballast, on the port side, the latter under the mid berth. Despite this many S28’s will still list slightly to the starboard side when at rest. Storing heavier items on the port side, where possible, will help to counteract this. These boats are small enough to be affordable to berth and economical to run, yet big enough to go offshore. The S28 is a very manageable boat for two people, or even singlehanded. Once used to the characteristics of single or twin sterndrive boats, the S28 is very responsive and easy to maneuver at close quarters. However, a bowthruster is an excellent addition to look out for in both twin and single-engined versions.

EnginesThe 28 Bolero/S28 was available with an unbelievable multitude of engine options during its 10-year build period. It was

offered with single or twin, petrol or diesel engine configurations. Volvo Penta and MerCruiser were the two engine manufacturers chosen by Sealine, both of which today have good availability of parts and spares. Engine choice can often be crucial for buyers, and secondhand prices of diesel-powered boats can vary wildly, with price differences of up to £30k. In 1995 the Bolero model was introduced with a bewildering list of engine options, such as a single 230hp Volvo KAD42, twin MerCruiser 150hp diesels and twin MerCruiser V6 205hp

S28’s are economical to run, affordable to maintain, and at just 28ft they are cheap to berth as well

Twin Volvo AD31s diesels were a popular option with the 28 Bolero. 1997 model pictured above

Trim will be needed. Automatic trim tabs work brilliantly, correcting any crosswind or weight lean, and are something to consider fitting

Younger models have a blue helm console. It is possible to fit a chartplotter to the left of the steering wheel by moving other kit around

ConclusionThe humble S28 is manageable, compact, capable, comfortable and, above all, affordable. So much so you will find it hard to justify parting with it. We couldn’t think of a better boat to get onto the sportscruiser ladder with.

Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a IIMS or a YDSA accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.

petrols. Top of the range was a twin Volvo Penta AD31 150hp diesel model, priced at £75,521. Many more MerCruiser diesel engine options were added, including twin 2.8 litre 165hps and a single 4.2 litre 300hp. There was also a brief appearance of a single Volvo KAD44 260hp diesel in the line up in 1999, priced at £82,229. By the late 90’s it seemed that Sealine had finally found the boats sweet spot in terms of power, and with the change to the S28 namesake, the list had been whittled down to just two engine choices from Volvo. Twin KAD32 170hp diesels, which are basically the AD31 with a supercharger, or twin 4.3 litre 205hp petrols. Both saw the boat achieving 32-35 knots. MerCruiser

engines are usually mated to Bravo 3 drives, while Volvo engines are coupled to a variant of the 290/DP drive. We understand very few petrol-powered boats were made and the majority of boats built are twin diesel. So what boat should I go for, you may ask. Diesel MerCruiser examples are fairly common but Volvo engines seem to be more sought after by the buying public, and therefore tend to command a higher price. Twin Volvo KAD32 versions are naturally the most expensive and desirable, and with an 8 year build period these are usually priced between £45-£60k. Large single Volvo diesel examples often come in at a close second in terms of price, as these are appealing for their economical attributes, i.e. cheaper running costs and single outdrive servicing costs. A single diesel, MerCruiser or Volvo, S28 would be an excellent choice for those wanting to boat inland with occasional sea forays. However, these boats may not be the easiest to sell on. Finally, at around £35-£45k, twin Volvo AD31 and twin 150hp or 165hp MerCruiser diesel examples provide the most affordable entry into diesel S28 ownership.

Top of the range. Twin Volvo KAD32s are the most desirable of diesel versions. The majority of S28s from 1998 onwards will have these

Twin 150hp AD31s should offer an efficient 2mpg at a cruising speed of 20-22 knots, running at around 3200rpm. Despite feeling slightly underpowered, and dare we say it ‘sluggish’ to get going, these boats should still achieve a 30-knot top speed when lightly loaded. Single diesel boats could offer 3-4mpg and similar cruising speeds. Boats fitted with the next generation Volvo KAD32 170hp engines should deliver a top speed of 34 knots and, with the supercharger, an altogether more effortless 25-knot cruising speed. Engine access is via a large heavy, gas-strutted hatch in the cockpit floor. On twin examples there is room to stand in front of the engines and work around them. In the engine room there are two GRP formed lockers outside of the engines. The batteries are housed in the port side locker and a mirror image locker on the starboard side can be used

for storage, ideal for engine spares. While you are down in the engine bay it is worth inspecting the aluminium water tank as corrosion is fairly common. These could prove costly to remove and replace. With the canopy up, the cockpit can be quite a noisy place, particularly with older engines. Therefore investigating the existing soundproofing and having a sea trial with canopies up is advisable. High sound levels could make communication impossible and long passages unbearable.

Single diesel engined versions, like this 1998 example with a Volvo KAD42, should give 3mpg

The Isle of Wight has a charm all of its own. With so many popular bays and harbours to tie up or anchor

in, is it any wonder that boaters flock to its shores in droves. Well-known harbours such as Yarmouth or Cowes immediately spring to mind, as these allow access at all states of the tide. However, situated on the eastern end of the island is a narrow inlet

allowing access to a large natural harbour that is one of the islands very special gems. Bembridge Harbour has it all, and is well worth a visit. In fact, once visited, you will want to return again and again. Although access is restricted by tide and a lengthy buoyed-channel approach, once safely tied up inside, the harbour provides a sheltered haven for anyone who craves

THE SOLENT

Bembridgethe outdoor life by the seaside, whatever your age. From the visitors moorings on the long pontoon in the Duver Marina you have a 360⁰ panorama of beautiful scenery across the water. This is a place where you will want to spend more than just one night as there is so much to occupy the whole family. From the magnificent coastal and countryside walks, you also have two villages (Bembridge and St Helens) to explore, many pubs and restaurants to sample and, of course, just across the sand dunes, there is the beach

for some old fashioned seaside fun, so don’t forget your bucket and spade, fishing net and crab line. As mentioned in the Doomsday Book, Bembridge was once an Island. Called ‘The Isle of Bimbridge’, it was cut off from the rest of the Isle of Wight and remained so until the 19th Century. The main trade was in agriculture, fishing and quarrying. Over the centuries the area has been attacked by the Romans, Danes, Spanish and French. In 1340, Theobald Russell successfully fought off the French

and Spanish armies, who had come ashore at St Helens. As a consequence of these attacks, a beacon system, using fire baskets in prominent positions, was set up to act as an early warning of impending invasion. This system was in operation until the 18th Century when semaphore took over. The heavily fortified cities of Portsmouth and Southampton, were attacked by the French navy over and over again. The Isle of Wight was seen as a soft target and many foreign armies landed and engaged with local folk. This ultimately led to the building of fortifications around the island, including the Bembridge Fort on Culver Down during the 19th Century, as a precaution

against Napoleonic invasion. Being a sheltered harbour, it was often the muster location for British fleets leaving for battle. It is said that Nelsons fleet assembled off St Helens Church (a conspicuous landmark for the entrance channel) before he left for the Battle of Trafalgar. Up until the 19th Century a feudal system existed, with local folk being mostly self-sufficient, but Bembridge was gaining in popularity as a beautiful place to live. During the Victorian era, the island was made even more popular by the regular visits by royalty. With the arrival of bigger ships to Bembridge Harbour, including a passenger ferry service from Portsmouth, a new pier and the construction of a railway,

Bembridge grew into a fashionable resort. To find out more about the history of the area, visit the Bembridge Heritage Centre, next to Bembridge Library, just off the High Street.

Access to Bembridge Harbour is approximately 3 hours either side of high water. However, we would advise that, if possible, you make your approach and departure on a rising tide. Being a popular place for both yachts and motorboats, it gets very busy in the summer, so it is advisable to call up ‘Bembridge Harbour’ on VHF channel 80 or 01983 872828, to give the length and draft of your boat before you enter the harbour. The friendly harbour staff are on duty 4 hours either side of high water and will give you instructions and assistance in mooring up. The harbour is approached from the

north-northeast, and by staying due north of St Helens Fort. It is here that you will also find the tide gauge beacon, which shows the least depth to be found in the entrance channel. The channel should be visible in a south west direction. Only the first set of starboard and port buoys are lit at night. The speed limit at the entrance and within the harbour is 6 knots. A sandy drying bar extends eastwards out from the shore to St Helens Fort, forming a causeway at low water springs. Otherwise known as the bar, you must cross this to enter, therefore this is the shallowest part of the approach. There is now a newly installed live-feed tide height gauge, giving the height of water at the bar. This is available on the Bembridge Harbour homepage or by contacting the Berthing Office. The data is updated every 60 seconds and also displays an upward or downward arrow indicating whether the

Food suppliesDuring the summer season the Duver Berthing Office has a limited stock of ‘fundamentals’ including ice, tea, coffee, baked beans and toilet rolls. It also has a small range of island produce and weekend newspapers.St Helens Post Office & Stores (01983 872710), located on the St. Helens village green, is a short walk away via the Duver/St Helens Common footpath. It is open daily from 6am to 8pm and stocks newspapers, general groceries and local produce. Bembridge has a good range of shops including a Co-op (with a cashpoint)in Sherbourne Street and local suppliers such as The Farm Shop and W.W. Woodford & Son, butchers and delicatessen, in the High Street. There is also a Lloyds Bank and Boots chemist. Tesco Extra at Brading Road, Ryde, is a short bus ride away.

Where to fill upThere is no fuel available in Bembridge Harbour. The nearest fuel is Premier Marinas Gosport or Cowes.

TidesA live-feed entrance bar depth is available via the Bembridge Harbour homepage. See also the ‘Tides’ page for 7-day tide times and heights.

The harbour staff also provide a water taxi service, 4 hours either side of high water, to other parts of the marina, including the beach on the opposite bank, which allows the quickest walking route into Bembridge Village, at a cost of £2 each way. There are other marinas and anchorages within Bembridge Harbour, but most have restricted access due to tides. Fisherman’s Marina is the home of the Bembridge fishing fleet, which is famous for its lobster and crab. Bembridge Marina, in the north west corner of the harbour has 90 permanent berths and a water taxi landing stage for access to Brading Haven Yacht Club, or an alternative walking route up the hill to St Helens.

Bembridge is well known for its local, freshly caught, crab and lobster. On the Fisherman’s Marina Pontoon you will find The Best Dressed Crab in Town floating café serving breakfast, lunches and afternoon teas, along with a shop selling fresh crab and lobster, open every day from 10.00 am (tel 01983 874758). The owner, Graham Cox, is an ex-fisherman who had followed in his father’s footsteps. However, he reckoned that he was much better at cooking fish than catching it,

tide is rising or falling. From this point you will need to ignore the chartplotter and use pilotage, ticking off each port and starboard buoy as you go, also keeping a close eye on the depth. The buoyed approach channel is fairly narrow and snakes its way south, where upon reaching Bembridge Point it goes round to the west, passing between two, sandy peninsulars. Once you have cleared the peninsula on the starboard side the Duver Marina visitors pontoon will be in sight, also on the starboard side. Boats coming from the south should be aware, and steer well clear, of Bembridge Ledge, a rocky drying outcrop that juts out from the Eastern most point of the island.

At high tide the harbour looks like a huge circular, almost landlocked, lake, but at low tide the harbour dries, leaving only a narrow channel on the approach and the long Duver pontoon still afloat. Boats moored to this visitor’s pontoon stay afloat at all states of the tide as this section of the harbour is regularly dredged to a depth of 2 metres. On busy days, please be prepared to raft. However, if you are single handed, have large dogs, small children or persons on board with mobility problems, the staff will do their best to give you a bankside mooring, if possible. The harbour is preparing to install five new finger berths for boats up to 14 metres, which will be available to pre-book. Duver Marina provides the only visitors pontoon moorings in the harbour, it offers toilet and shower facilities, a marina office, a BBQ and marquee area which can be pre-booked for rallies. The cost of an overnight berth is £3.30 per metre per night (£33 per night for a 10m boat). The berthing office operate a loyalty system which offers various discounts during the season, so it is worth asking for details.

at affordable prices. The club remains open all year, although the bar opening hours and availability of catering are reduced in the low season. Bembridge Sailing Club, (01983 8872237), also welcomes visiting yachtsman from RYA affiliated clubs.

Fun on the beach, both on the Bembridge side and St Helens/Duver have excellent beaches. The foreshore of some beaches are stony, but when the tide is out it leaves plenty of sand to play on. It is also possible to walk round the headland from St. Helens to Priory Bay at low tide, or take the southerly coastal path to Whitecliff Bay, where you will find other wonderful expanses of fine golden sand. Incidentally, if you find yourself with a couple of hours wait for the tide before entering the harbour, both these beautiful bays are great for anchoring. TackT-Isle Adventures (01983 875542) at Woodnutts Yard on The Duver, right next to the visitors pontoon, was started just a few years ago and now provides a multitude of adventure experiences for every age, whatever the weather. Activities range from dinghy sailing and kayaking, paddle boarding and windsurfing, sand yachting to Segway riding. They also hire

out mountain bikes if you fancy pedalling around the harbour or beyond. Countryside or sandy beach horse riding can be arranged for you at Sally’s Riding School (07974 861674) and they can cater for experienced or novice riders.A trip to the harbour is not complete without a visit to the National Trust Bembridge Windmill. This Grade 1 listed building has stood majestically looking out over the surrounding area since the early 18th Century. It is the only surviving windmill on the Isle of Wight and is remarkably preserved. It is open every day from mid-March to early November from 10.30am to 5pm. There are so many lovely walks around this area but one which will really take your breath away is the steep climb up to Culver Down. The views from the top are magnificent, on one side you have Bembridge and on the other you can look right down into Sandown Bay. You can also visit the Yarborough Memorial, which dominates the landscape at the eastern end of the island, and the Bembridge Fort, built during the 19th Century to protect against invasion. There is also a pretty

good, dog friendly pub on Culver Down too. The Culver Haven Inn has the best views on the island. Classified as a ‘Key Station’ in the Solent, an RNLI lifeboat has been based at Bembridge, standing guard over its notorious Ledge, since 1867. The existing, all-weather lifeboat station was demolished in 2009 to make way for a state of the art station, with ramp, to house the Tamar Class lifeboat. Completed in 2011 at a cost of £7,000,000, it is well worth a visit. It is in an absolutely stunning location at the end of Lane End Road and is open, along with its shop, from 11am to 4pm in the summer, and 2pm to 4pm during winter months. Going further afield you could take a bus ride around the entire island, or hire a car, and visit the Isle of Wight Zoo at Sandown, Blackgang Chine, The Needles Park, all great for kids, The Needles Old and New Batteries, Carisbrooke Castle and, of course, Osborne House, the seaside family retreat of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. These are just a few of the hundreds of attractions that await you and your family on the Isle of Wight and further information can be found on the Visit Isle of Wight website or at the tourist information centre at Brading Railway Station/Heritage Centre.

Olive, our project Mayland 16 is finished. This month, exactly a year after starting our search,

we have put the finishing touches on our £1000 boat and, despite there being plenty more we could do to improve her further, Olive is ready for the water. We started this month with finishing the interior upholstery. You may remember that we used the old cockpit foam to make the two bench cushions but we were looking to buy another piece for the bow cushion. With so little left in the budget

we thought we’d try something else. We took all the off cuts of foam and stuck them together to make one piece large enough to cut the bow cushion from. We tried experimenting with different glues. Spray glue worked best, but we also had some good results using simple PVA glue. If you try the same, be careful not to get it too close to the edges of the join, as when it dries it leaves a hard crust. With the newly formed piece of foam we cut it to shape using our paper template and electric carving knife. We wrapped it in

some leftover stockinette from the cockpit cushions, and made a matching cover using the material we had been given when we started the interior upholstery. Total cost of completing the internal cushions? Zero, our best bargain yet. The next job was to add some curtains. Claire had already made these from our selection of donated fabrics, so again the cost was zero, all I had to do was to fit them using some hooks and some old net curtain flexible wire. The hooks were already on the boat from, I guess, some previous curtains. I just needed to reposition them to fit the curtains Claire had made. The wire was liberated from the house, net curtains are so last century. Things were looking good, considering we ended last month with just £15.65 in

the kitty and at this point we still had all of it. Next on the list was the cabin floor. Starting out as plain painted fibreglass it didn’t take much to make it look and feel a whole lot better. A small off cut of carpet, kept, like many other things, because it might come in useful one day, was cut and laid in the cabin. Lastly, we needed to take care of one very special part of the boat, its little toilet compartment. I would have liked to have lined this with some vinyl, or something similar, but finally my stores were beaten. With nothing suitable to

all gone, the rusty lump beneath the boat hasn’t even been looked at. With hindsight we should perhaps have looked for another boat with a roadworthy trailer, they are out there. Unfortunately that was not to be, and so we need to turn the trailer into something safe, legal and roadworthy while keeping the costs as low as possible. To start, I needed to separate boat and trailer. This was achieved with a willful regard to health and safety and copious use of hydraulic jacks, big lumps of wood and some metal drums. I won’t go into detail, suffice it to say you should not try

this at home. With the trailer out, I was greeted with a new problem. I was always aware that, while sitting on its trailer, I was never able to have a proper look at the underwater sections of the hull. What I could see looked fine, but with the trailer removed I was greeted with the sight of one very poor repair on the keel and, even worse, a small hole just aft of it. Lying on my back with grinder in hand the poor repair was ground away to reveal a decent sized section of damaged keel. The area around the small hole was also ground down so that both could be repaired with the remnants of my fibreglass kit bought for fixing up the bulkhead. Luckily the underlying wood was dry and rot free, which means this damage probably isn’t too old. The keel was filled with fibreglass paste, which was also used to form the keel shape again where it was missing. This was then overlaid with a couple of layers of chopped strand mat and then painted with some bilge paint just to help

hand and no money left in the budget this area is going to have to stay bare fibreglass, at least for now. What we did spend our last few pounds on was a second hand but unused porta potti. £20 against a retail price of nearly £75 meant our Thetford Qube 165 was a fantastic eBay bargain, even if buying it did mean we had now officially gone over budget. So, give or take a fiver, we have proved you can bag yourself a usable boat for around a grand. Or have we? At the very beginning I said there was an element to our particular project that could make or break it, the trailer. With our budget

blend it in. Olive is unlikely to be left in the water for any length of time so we won’t be antifouling her. Turning my attention back to the trailer we could at least now see what we were dealing with. The suspension units were

little more than rusty lumps. The two hubs were different sizes, as were the wheels and tyres. We had one disk brake and one drum brake and, of course, the brakes were completely rusted and of no use whatsoever. The hitch looks like it is in need of some TLC and there are no mudguards, or even mudguard fixing brackets, on the trailer. It might sound like a lost cause but I have a plan. The central part of the trailer with the keel rollers is, surface rust aside, in decent condition. If I can repair the hitch, all we really need to concentrate on is the axle and brakes. I’m going to do some calculations because I have a feeling we may even be able to put Olive on an unbraked trailer, which will make repairing the existing trailer much simpler. The Mayland 16 had a brochure weight of 383kgs and the 20hp Johnson weighs in at 53kgs. If all the other bits we have added, plus the weight of the trailer itself can be kept below 300kgs we might just be able to tow her legally on a trailer without brakes. Towing law stipulates that, with an appropriate vehicle, you can tow an unbraked trailer of up to 750kg. Of course we have the added complication of brochure weights often bearing little resemblance to real life, so we will

ultimately end up taking the whole rig to a weighbridge, whatever we end up doing with the trailer, just to ensure we stay on the right side of the law. We’ll bring you all our trailer shenanigans next month, when we hope to finally have Olive not just seaworthy, but also road worthy. Yes we will be over budget, but since when did any project ever come in on, or below, budget? I won’t count my chickens right yet, but I still think we can get our project boat on the road, and in the water, for not too much over £1000. As Jeremy Clarkson would say, that’s still less than a decent set of quality golf bats, and I know what I would rather be doing.

Oh dear. With the trailer and boat separated we can see what we have to deal with. Rust, damaged wheelbearings and seized brakes

Summer had finally arrived, and what better way to start the cruising season, and blow the cobwebs away,

than a 2-week cruise to France and the Channel Islands in early June. As crews packed their bags and readied their boats for the off, it seemed the weather gods were not on our side. In the days prior, high winds had battered the UK, meaning the start of the cruise had to be delayed. Sadly this meant cancelling two of the early ports in the itinerary, Dielette and Granville. However, with a good weather outlook and with us determined to make the most of the days

weather revealed unsettled conditions in the Channel, so the plan was to have a look again the next morning at first light. And what a morning it was. Departing at 0500, the fleet witnessed the most spectacular sunrise. Travelling at speeds between 20 to 27 knots, each boat made its way out past the eastern side of the Isle of Wight and set course for Cherbourg. For the crews aboard Jeanneau Merry Fisher 855 Cordisque and Cranchi Zaffiro 34 Scruf, this was to be their first ever channel crossing.

remaining, everyone gathered on the 2nd June for the inaugural evening briefing onboard the Lightship at Haslar Marina. The weather, and other last minutes issues, had whittled out 11 strong fleet down to six, including support boat April Fool, a Sealine SC35. The group included Evolution 30 La Dolce Vita, which had travelled all the way from Penzance to take part in the cruise. Luckily skipper Geoff had seen the weather coming and had made a dash for the Solent a week earlier. A superb effort. The first stop in the itinerary was Cherbourg. However, the next day’s

Team member Claire, was detailed with the task of getting into each port first. For this passage she was aboard fleet boat Gîte, a Princess V39, to organise the fuelling and berthing at Cherbourg’s Port Chantereyne. Despite a gentle rolling swell, evidence from the previous few days of high winds, the crossing was fantastic. With sunny skies overhead boats arrived in Cherbourg early enough to purchase morning croissants from local boulangeries. We were joined later by fleet boat Breda, a Sunseeker Predator 53, who had come across the Channel direct from their home port of Dartmouth. By 0500 the next morning April Fool had past Cap de la Hague and was in the Alderney Race, checking the weather and sea conditions for the day’s passage to Carteret. Soon enough we were all on our way, heading west and around Cap de La Hague towards the small tidal port. The skies were overcast for the 41-mile passage, but nearing Carteret the sun was peeping out through the grey gloom. One

by one the boats entered the harbour, crossing over the tidal gate into Carteret Marina and assembled either side of the visitor’s pontoon. Crews had the rest of the day to explore and relax in the hot sunshine after the early start. That evening cruise participants gathered in the cockpit

exchanged club pennants. The Channel Island of Jersey was just on the horizon, a mere 30 miles away, and was next on the agenda. By mid morning the next day, under clear blue sunny skies, the fleet was soon snaking its way out of Carteret and out to sea. Conditions enroute were superb and, despite dodging the many lobster pots off Carteret, it was an excellent trip. Just over an hour later we were arriving in St Helier, where we refuelled before mooring in St Helier

The family aboard Jeanneau Merry Fisher 855 Cordisque, Alan, Lorella and Hannah, took the bus to the Durrell Wildlife Park and visited the Mansell Collection. Keen

walkers Penny and Stephen from Gîte took the bus to the north east of the island, and walked the 8km between Rozel and Bouley Bay. One lunchtime, Peter and Sue from Sunseeker Predator 53 Breda had a treat for us all. They lit their new Lotus Grill barbecue and were making hot dogs for everyone. We tucked into the hot dogs while sat on the pontoon, or sheltered from the wind under their vast aft canopy. Our last night in St Helier was marked with a group dinner at the St Helier Yacht

conditions, and we had refuelling on the agenda. On the afternoon’s high tide all boats fuelled and crossed the sill into the visitor’s marina. By nightfall the rain had subsided and the marina was like a mirror. Evening meals were booked ashore and everyone was preparing for another, hopefully sunnier, rest day. The next morning we awoke to a much brighter, warmer day. It was a chance to dry out damp clothing, and see Guernsey at its best. The town and island were beckoning and everyone ventured ashore for the day. Stephen and Penny’s (Gîte)

Club, who always do a brilliant job of catering for us whenever we visit. By Tuesday of our second week the wind did not seem to be relenting, gusting up to 35 knots at times (Force 6-7). We were due to move to Guernsey on the Wednesday so we had to delay yet again. Luckily, Thursday was forecast to improve as the day progressed, so a plan was formulated to leave for Guernsey late that day, moving out over the sill at St Helier as late in the afternoon as the tide would allow. Sure enough the wind dropped to around 9 knots and by 1530 April Fool had slipped out of the harbour to assess the sea conditions. Everyone was excited at the prospect of moving, and were readying

their boats in the afternoon sunshine. Conditions were excellent and far better than expected after such a long period of strong winds. By 1600 the fleet was on passage to St Peter Port. Conditions on the 20-mile trip were superbly flat, and the early evening sky glowed pink with the last of the sun. Whilst on route between the two islands we could see black clouds were forming over Jersey. A storm was heading our direction. Luckily everyone was settled in the outer harbour at St Peter Port before the heavens opened, and boy did it rain. It got heavier and heavier into the evening, with thunder and lighting encircling the harbour. Everyone huddled undercover and spent the evening onboard on the outside pontoons. Foul weather gear or an umbrella were essential for those brave enough to venture into town, something made much easier now that these outer pontoons are linked to shore. With Sundays forecast looking reasonable for a channel crossing home, the plan was for us to stay in St Peter Port for three nights. The next day brought in drizzly, wet

bikes came out again, and they set off on an epic ride to the other side of the island and Cobo Bay. Despite coming back saying it was a lot hillier than expected, they loved every minute, particularly the pretty and deserted single-track country roads. The family from Cordisque caught

Vita was planning a long direct passage home to Penzance, at just over 120 miles. This left the two Solent boats, Scruf and Cordisque heading back accompanied by April Fool. A gathering on the pontoon followed and fridges were emptied for a ‘chuck in’ style finger buffet. With alarms set for some un-godly hour, everyone said their farewells and retired to bed. By 0530am the next day April Fool, Scruf and Cordisque had slipped their lines and departed the harbour, accompanied by La Dolce Vita. Skipper Geoff made his way south of Guernsey, setting course for Penzance. The Dartmouth boats departed at 0700. Despite some localised tidal chop at the top of the Little Russell and at the top of the Alderney Race, the passage was good. The three Solent boats travelled together and witnessed skies change from blue to murky overcast when nearing the south coast. It was the end of the cruise and, upon reaching the last waypoint, everyone said their goodbyes and set course for their home ports. The cruise achieved four of its scheduled six ports, which was a superb achievement

AGlaze Teakcare System

Contact: Marine AGlaze www.marineaglaze.com

Teak decks are perhaps one of the more desirable options, and they certainly lift the looks of many boats. That is, until they become neglected and dirty. Keeping teak clean is not an option, so it pays to choose a product that is cost effective, easy to use and most importantly, a good performer. I have used most of the teak cleaning products on the market over the years and the one that best fulfills all three of these criteria is AGlaze Teakcare System. The system comes in two parts, each delivered in a 1 litre bottle requiring dilution at 10:1. This mean that you really get 10 litres of cleaner and 10 litres of neutralizer for your money, that’s the cost effective bit taken care of. Once the first stage is mixed you simply apply it to wet teak with a bit of gentle agitation from a soft bristle brush until the grime stops coming out of the wood. We then gave it a quick rinse before mixing up the neutralizer. This was applied to the test area and then rinsed off. Easy to use? Teak

cleaning doesn’t get much easier, so that’s another tick in the box. Our teak wasn’t particularly dirty, but even so the difference is quite obvious. The dull grey wood has been transformed into something clean and golden brown. I think it’s fair to say that that is the third and final tick for our performance criteria. So it’s one of the most cost effective teak cleaners on the market, it’s simple to mix and easy to use, and it delivers what it promises. What more could you ask.

The first stage is applied with some gentle agitation. Stage two neutralises it to leave nice clean teak

Rail/Stanchion ClipsOver the years I have lost count of the number of towels, floor mats and T shirts that I have lost, when they have been blown away after hanging them out to dry. I have tried various pegs and clips, some good, some not so good, but the usual result is that they succumb to the salt water and UV rather too quickly. For the last 8 months I have been using a pair of Rail/Stanchion Clips and, when I say using, I mean leaving them in place on the rail in the worst of the winter, spring and summer weather, as well as a regular dose of salt water. I have left wet floor mats

hanging out for weeks in all weathers, and not only do the clips still look like new, I haven’t lost a single thing from their vice like grasp. The clips fix to 7/8” (22mm) and 1” (25mm) rails, with a little infill that clips inside the hook for the smaller rails. Contact: Roche Marine www.rochemarine.co.uk

Hardy has been building solid, practical no-nonsense boats since 1976, and current Hardy brand

owners, Windboats, seem determined to continue that tradition. The current range spans between 30 and 62 ft, with every model delivering a comfortable and safe cruising experience. The 32DS sits roughly in the middle of the range and, although the designation is new, and the boat is packed with new features, the model has actually been around for many years, starting life as the 32 Commander in 1999. The 32DS is available in three ‘standard’ layouts. The first is the layout brought forward from the 32 Commander, which provides a lower dinette and galley but just the one cabin up front. Our test boat is the first to be produced using layout two. This puts the galley up in the wheelhouse and

little ones onboard. The cockpit itself is very deep and safe, with about a metre between cockpit sole and gunwale. The gas locker is located beneath the single teak laid transom step and, on a boat like our test boat that is not equipped with gas, this space can be used as a very useful self draining wet locker. The cockpit also features a moulded recess to unobtrusively store a life raft, while keeping it very easy to get at, and two further lockers in the gunwale on each side, the port one large enough to take small fenders. In the port aft corner there is an L shaped seat with good storage below, and in the floor, a large lazarette that houses the water tank, an optional portable cool box and a bilge pump with a wandering hose long enough to reach any point on the boat. There is a small teak cockpit table, perfect for a mug/glass or two and a bowl of nibbles to share or, if you want a larger area for a full-on alfresco dining experience, you can

provides a second cabin on the starboard side. The third option is to have a larger galley in place of the second cabin. I have put ‘standard’ in inverted commas because the truth is that with a builder like Windboats, there really is no such thing as standard. These boats are built to order and what the customer wants, the customer gets, assuming of course it is physically possible and they are prepared to pay for it.

“A no-nonsense cruiser with traditional values and some

brilliant modern features”

A great example of this on our test boat was in the boat’s overall length. Now this might be something that you think is pretty much impossible to change but no, the customer has a berth that can only accommodate a 10-metre boat and he wants a 32DS, at a little over 10m LOA to go on it. The answer is that Hardy commissioned a clever and unique system to allow the bathing platform to be raised and stored flat against the transom to bring the boat in under the magical 10m mark. Entry onto the boat from the bathing platform is aided by a small fold out step half above the platform and a cut out section in the transom. This cut out has two fantastic grab rails to aid passage and, once inside, the area is made safe with a simple guard wire being fixed across. If an owner so wished, this space could be filled with a transom gate for extra security, which might be worth considering if you cruise with

The cockpit offers an alfresco area with extra seating available by using the saloon stools. The wheelhouse doors can be either wood or metal

The dinette can easily accomodate five people for dinner. The table can also be used in the cockpit

take the dinette table out into the cockpit. The cockpit comes with a full canopy that is fully supported by a single hoop, that is cleverly concealed in the wheelhouse roof and slides in and out when required. Separating the cockpit from the wheelhouse are four opening doors, all made from teak and highly varnished. Again a customer can choose to have these doors in aluminium if they prefer something less eye catching and tactile, but perhaps a little easier to maintain. These doors all open and close individually, meaning an owner can choose anything from a single door opening on cold and

inclement days, to bringing the outdoors in when the sun is shining, by opening up all four doors. Inside the wheelhouse on this version there is the galley immediately to port. The galley provides a double hob, an oven, a single deep sink and plenty of work surface. In fact there is enough work surface that you could specify a small draining sink to be installed alongside the existing sink. With a drop-in cover you wouldn’t even lose use of the space. On this non-gas boat the hob and oven are diesel fired but both electric and gas appliances are options. Beneath the sink is a large double cupboard

with built in drawer and a further drawer, for cutlery and crockery is located beneath the oven. The fridge is just forward of the galley, under the helmsman’s seat. All woodwork is finished in American white oak and the owner of our test boat specified that all the grain should run horizontally, which Hardy were happy to do, and which works very well. Opposite the galley you will find the dinette. This L-shaped area would comfortably seat four around a decent sized table with fold out leafs. There is some storage below this seating, most notably a large drawer below the aft section, which would add some useful extra galley capacity. Cleverly, the forward section of this L-shaped seating converts into a second forward facing seat when underway. It’s a bit fiddly to do, but in a couple of minutes you can lift the seat out, fix a leg to the bottom of it, swing it around and place it

in position. This important feature will transform the experience of a long journey for the first mate, who would otherwise have to travel sitting in the dinette. In front of this seat is space for any extra navigation equipment and a large flat area that is perfect for laying out paper charts. In the evenings the whole wheelhouse can be made private by lowering blinds that are found at every window, and on the ceiling above the galley a fold down TV will provide your entertainment. The helm seat is comfortable and supportive but you have to watch your head as you step up onto the raised plinth, beneath which is a huge storage locker. The helm console is well thought out with space for a decent size multi-function display and any other instrumentation you might specify. The steering wheel is low down and vertically mounted which works better than you might initially think and

The forward section of dinette seating doubles as a second forward facing seat when underway

The galley on our test boat was diesel powered. Gas and electric are also options. A fold away TV is fitted above the galley

The guest cabin is excellent as either a single berth, or a twin cabin with bunks

the throttles are mounted on their own pod, perfectly angled and placed for easy use. The three section windscreen each has its own pantograph wiper which sweep almost the entire glassed area. The switches for these are low down next to the skippers left leg, and we did experience an accidental switching on of these once during our test by a wayward knee. Overhead there is a large sliding sunroof in the wheelhouse roof. This locks open in three positions but unfortunately doesn’t extend fully over the helmsman. This means that there is no easy option to stand with you head out of the roof for close quarters maneuvering, although it is just about possible if you stand off to one side. Next to the helm is a large sliding window, matched by another one on the starboard side, which allows plenty of fresh air in and also allows the helmsman to stick their head out to communicate with crew on the bow.

Moving forward and down two steps, both with lifting treads to provide access to the storage area beneath, there is a companionway with the toilet compartment off to port. This is an impressive size and includes a separate shower cubicle with six foot headroom and plenty of elbow space. The floor of both the toilet and shower compartments are finished in a Corian type material with inlaid rubber caulking, that not only looks nice, but also offers good non slip properties. The toilet compartment door does open outwards, so you would need to be careful that nobody is walking by when coming out. The forward cabin offers a V berth arrangement with an infill to create a large double. This infill stores neatly away in one of the two very generous hanging lockers. There are also a further six small high level lockers and two large under bunk cupboards. If that wasn’t enough storage,

and we think it probably is, there is also a huge chasm beneath the forward part of the V berth. There is a decent amount of room to stand and get dressed and, with the infill removed, this space becomes cat swinging size. There is also very good headroom at around 6ft 2in and with a large overhead hatch, two opening ports and the use of light materials, the cabin feels airy and spacious. Up in the bow a panel hinges forward to reveal a large hatch that open up to provide access to the anchor locker. This is the boat’s only anchor locker access, which doesn’t provide the easiest solution for dealing with chain related problems during dropping or hauling an anchor, but with a nice deep

drop you should at least avoid the problem of the chain pyramiding during retrieval and jamming the winch. Opposite the toilet compartment, this particular layout offers a second cabin, and a great one it is too. It comes with two bunks in an over and under arrangement, the top one can fold down or be completely removed from the boat if not required. Storage is plentiful with a hanging locker and no fewer than six lockers and drawers. Again there is very good head and elbow room, which all adds up to as good a second cabin as you are likely to find on a 10-metre boat. Engine access for daily checks is through

The forward cabin can be set up as twins or, with an infill, a double berth. Space and storage are plentiful

The toilet compartment and separate shower cubicle belie the boat’s size

one floor hatch. The raw water strainers are mounted quite high up on the bulkhead and beneath the cabin sole so, while they are easy to get at, it is not possible to open the hatch for a quick glance through their transparent lid. Full servicing, more in depth maintenance or access to the rear of the engines and stern glands is easily achieved by removing more floor panels. Deck access has been slightly modified on our test boat to allow easier access down the starboard side. The moulding between cockpit and side deck has been lowered and now three teak laid steps provide access

to the side deck and bow. Thigh high guardrails, together with around six inches of raised bulwark and grab rails along the top of the wheelhouse, offer a safe passage forward. The guardrail has opening sections on either side for alongside boarding access and up at the bow there is a large flat working area with a raised section forward for the anchor, winch and rope handling hardware. The port side deck is a mirror image of the starboard, but retains the higher step at the aft end before the cockpit. While our test boat is all non slip GRP on the decks, you can specify teak, or fake teak, if you prefer. With a boat like the 32DS, which might spend much of its time exploring inland waterways, air draft is important. Hardy has recognized this and provided a folding radar mast. With the mast down the air

a large floor hatch in front of the galley. It’s quite heavy and a little awkward but the benefit of this is that once it is raised you have very good access to the port engine. There is also plenty of space in front of the engines so you can jump down for access to the starboard engine. Standard fitment for the 32DS is a pair of Yanmar four-cylinder 3.5 litre units producing 240hp each. The owner of our test boat specified slightly higher revving four-cylinder 2.0 litre, 180hp engines. These have saved around 200kg in weight, which should help to offset some of the missing 120hp. Physically the engines are similar in size, the 240’s being slightly longer but not as wide, so engine room space and access should be similar. Access to the daily essentials of raw water strainer, seacocks, primary fuel filters and oil dipsticks are all achievable through this

draft is just 2.7m.

UnderwayThe driving position delivers good visibility all around, with only small blind spots created by the windscreen mullions. Pushing along at river speeds you need to keep a good lookout behind as the hull creates a large wash once you push it above hull displacement speeds and from the comfort of the wheelhouse this could easily go unnoticed. 1500rpm delivers around 6 knots, and at this speed the boat feels like a luxury car, solid, responsive and quiet. The driving position looks a little awkward, with the low down upright steering wheel but in practice it just wasn’t an issue. Maybe a taller boater might find the wheel too close to the seat but for me it felt comfortable and natural. Open up the throttles and the

quite as on the ball as the crew would like in keeping the windscreen clear on that side.

ConclusionThe 32DS, even with the bigger engines, is not going to set your pants on fire, but then that’s not what a boat like the Hardy is designed to do. She will, however, get you to where you want to go in just about any weather that you are happy to be out in, and despite her fairly low headline top speed, will keep up a pace in choppy conditions that many faster boats could only dream of. The semi-customized build and Windboats eagerness to incorporate customer wishes will provide potential owners lots of opportunity to make their 32DS unique. I would imagine the Hardy will appeal to

Offers three different layouts and comes with single or twin diesel engines from 60hp up to 360hp for river or coastal cruising.

32DS picks up speed at a decent rate as she climbs onto the water. The bow tends to ride quite high and we found that the trim tabs were essential as soon as you enter semi-planing mode. To bring the bow down you need at least half tabs and, at times, we were running with the tabs fully down. This has the effect of improving ride angle and forward visibility, but it does mean that the bow wave is a long way forward. In choppy and windy conditions this equals a rather wet ride, particularly into a head sea or on the windward beam. Luckily in the comfort of the wheelhouse and with three excellent wipers, a wet ride can be easily shrugged off. Mid range pick up is also good and a top speed of this model with the smaller engines was a very acceptable 20 knots. Like many semi displacement boats, the Hardy barely leans when turning, even at full speed, full lock turns seem to be executed with an almost even keel, despite actually delivering a very tight turning circle. At all speeds the 32DS feels solid and dependable and, although the conditions on our test day were fairly benign, we did have some of the short steep chop that is often found off the east coast, as well as some big wake from the commercial traffic entering and departing Felixstowe. The hull never felt like it was

troubled, delivering a soft forgiving ride throughout the test. At 3500rpm the Hardy settled into a comfortable cruising speed of around 16 knots, and it felt like it would be happy to do this all day long. Even with the bigger engines I suspect, from the way the hull felt, that this is the 32’s natural cruising speed, the bigger engines only really benefiting by delivering it at lower revs for a slightly quieter and more relaxing ride. The crew will appreciate the comfy navigator’s seat, which also offers great visibility. With the wipers being so important, it would have been nice if at least the starboard one could have been controlled from this position as well as from the helm. With the wind on the starboard beam the helmsman may not be

The canopy is mounted on a single pull out frameYou will struggle to find safer and more practical decks on any other boat of this size many converts from the sailing fraternity,

as well as previous motorboat owners who, from experience, know what makes a good motorboat for northern European waters. The latter will recognize that the Hardy 32DS delivers these characteristics by the bucket load.
