JEFFHUCKLEBERRYThe origins of performance
within the contemporary art con-
text involve clear fundamentals;
a higher valuation of the live
or time-based experience with
the art and artist over and above
the value of an artists object, thecompulsion of the artist to ex-
press his or her ideas with the
physical presence of their own
body and its actions over other
forms of creative expression,
and an effort to overtly exhibit
an artists physical and concep-
tual process as part of the work.
Jeff Huckleberrys work em-
bodies the power of these funda-
mentals with actions that simul-
taneously exhibit his process and
often generate brilliant installa-
tions through the execution of
his performances. Although the
remnants and detritus of Huckle-
berrys actions remain, with great
strength, works of art in and of
themselves, the presence of his
physical form in the creation ofthe installation can be easily seen
as the most crucial element to any
given piece. In the context of a
live event for a live audience rather
than within the connes of a studio,
he transforms and imbibes with
meaning the materials he chooses
to work with and does so with in-
timidating and masculine glory.

sciously I may still say, Why are
you hurting yourself? Theres no
need for this? Now, subconscious-
ly, I understand that there totally is.
Jamie makes you a condante
and co-conspirator in his projects.
His audience feels the same way.Or they dont. There is no mid-
dle ground; either move forward
into the action, or move way out
of range. I remember him telling
me once at a performance he did
at a big, drunken art party, Im
glad you were here, as if to say,I know you and you can receive
this message. In that rst video I
ever saw of his work, when he had
caused that sculpture to fall inches
from his face, I felt the same way
I do when I watch my friend Vela
pour Tequila over his head during a
performance. I want to jump over the
invisible boundary surrounding the
performance and join in. Like moun-
tain biking in the woods with a group
of friends, its like, Lets all go! That
sounds fun. Get muddy and bloody. Noones going to get really hurt, but we
wont make a lot of effort not to get hurt.
