The Problem: Different types of free educational media are spread over the internet.

ONE PLACE TO LEARN ON THE WEB

IS ANYONE ELSE DOING IT?

Free Athena organizes, and promotes them all on a single site.

Our Solution: Bring all the different types of free educational media together on one site, and editorially promote the start-up universities.

Free Athena aggregates open university courses, documentary films, Ted Talks, podcasts, interviews, and panel discussions on one website that is categorize by subject, and curated so the consumer to learn about anything for free. Our home page is a magazine that promotes vanguard ed-sites.

Lots of websites offer free educational media. None are putting it together in one place.

-iTunes University and Academic Earth house open university courses.

-Top Documentary and Documentary Storm stream documentary movies.

-Kahn Academy offers primarily science and math lectures.

-Ted Talks website is full of their convention speeches.

-Coursera and Udemy host real-time academic courses from top professors.

WHAT DO YOU WE NEED?

Free Athena needs funding to code the website, to curate the videos, manage the editorial section of the site, and market the site. We have branded and wireframed Free Ahtena; our product is free because the videos are openly hosted by sites such as YouTube.

WHAT DOES THE SECTOR LOOK LIKE?

In 2011, education-technology investments grew by 28%. Venture capital-ists invested $429 million in 82 education-technology deals last year.

There are presently two types of education websites:

1. Aggregators of existing “free”documentaries and “open” university courses already hosted online.

2. Start-ups that partner with professors of major universities to offer real-time courses online.

HOW MUCH ARE WE LOOKING AT?

$25,000 will allow us to code the website. Our team of three will be able to manage the site in the short them, until we create a revenue stream through advertising. $125,000 will market us properly for two years.

We are improving on something that is already profitable. We expect to be profitable soon.

WHAT KIND OF RETURN CAN YOU EXPECT?

Page 4: Free athena presentation

WHAT’S THE ONLINE EDUCATION MARKET LIKE?

The two types of education sites are doing similar business. The Aggrega-tors are slightly outpacing The Start-Up in terms of unique visitors per month.

AGGREGATORS - Unique Visitors Per Month

Top Documentary - 280,000

Open Culture - 250,000

Academic Earth - 62,000

Documentary Heaven - 40,000

START-UPS - Unique Visitors Per Month

Coursera - 125,000

Udemy - 62,000

Udacity- 48,000

EdX - 20,000

Free Athena aggregates both free documentaries and open university courses on one site. We also pro- mote the education start-ups by featuring original articles on our Magazine home-page. Instead of trying to trap customers on our site, we offer them all the free curriculum on the web, and refer them if another institution offers something we cannot.

HOW WILL FREE ATHENA MAKE MONEY?

SHORT TERM -

Banner Advertising and University Referrals, OR Nothing

In the short-term we have an opportunity to make money the same way other aggregators do but we’d prefer to keep the site clear of ads while we build a strong, large community.

MEDIUM TERM -

Permission Based Marketing, Tasteful Ads, Referrals to Start-Ups,

Once we have created a community, we plan to permission based market through our newsletter. We will also begin to solicite customer referrals for the other education start-ups. Further, we will begin to consider taste-ful, relevant advertising on our site.

LONG TERM

Amazon Associates (Product Referral)

All documentary films, and university courses have authors, professors, hosts, and writers who have books and other products for sale. We

HOW DO THEY MAKE MONEY?

Aggregators make money through banner advertising and university referrals. Start-ups are on running on investment capital.

plan to refer customers to the books, videos and other products that are related to these authors, and to the subject matters in which they display an interest.

WHAT DOES THE SITE LOOK LIKE?

We’re glad you asked. There are three main sections

1. The Magazine Home Page

2. The Browse Section

3. The Video View Page

The following three pages of this document are these wireframes.

The times of our lives are filled with many interesting lovely things. People go to organic stores. They eat at restaurants. People are full of interesting ideas. They like robots, they like colors. Grass is green. Clouds are blue. There are all kinds of strokes in the pool. People love the Beatles. Winding and winding around our heads are the easiest of the things we all love. There are wild and angry folks. The South isn’t very fun. The North is the place we all want to be.
