SALA SubsidyThe City of Burnside is offering artists a SALA fee subsidy for the first time in 2015/2016.

This scheme acknowledges the role that artists and local venues play in the cultural life of the council area. Subsidies of up to $110 are available to assist individuals and groups with the cost of registering for the SALA Festival. Eligibility criteria includes resident artists of the City of Burnside who are exhibiting either in or outside of the Council area, and artists who exhibit within the City of Burnside.

In both instances the subsidy applies only to individuals and groups who are required to pay a SALA fee direct to SALA (eg does not include exhibitions in venues which pay the SALA fee on the artist’s behalf). For further enquiries or application forms please call the Pepper Street Arts Centre or go to our website.

Burnside Civic Centre Atrium ProgramAn artist-run program of displays by community groups, schools, organisations and other resident artists is held in the Burnside Civic Centre Atrium, an adjunct to the full Pepper Street Arts Centre program. Limited places are available in 2016. Due to the position of the display area, high visibility of the showcasing groups and individuals is enjoyed, as large numbers of visitors pass through in their daily interactions with the other programs and services of Council.

Exhibit 2017Exhibition applications for 2017 are now being accepted for limited months.

For all the above opportunities please access application forms via our website or by calling Pepper Street. For exhibitions, artists are encouraged to register their interest with the Exhibitions and Community Arts Officer by phone or email. For all areas - gift shop, artist of the month and exhibitions - the first available submission date in 2016 is Wednesday 17 February.

Art book collection for borrowing An exciting collection of art books is available for borrowing, or browsing over a coffee at Pepper Street. Provided by the Burnside Library there are many titles to choose from and they are also a great resource if you are taking classes at the Centre.

Gift Shop Gallery quality, affordably priced, handmade items by local artists. We invite you to support them by regularly browsing the wide range on offer.

Gift Shop and Artist of the MonthNew artists and/or new ranges of work are invited for submission throughout the year for the gift shop and artist of the month program. Join the many artists who currently showcase their work across all mediums: woodwork, silks, glass, jewellery, leather, felt, wearable art, functional and non functional ceramics, metalwork and more.

SALA - The Art of GardensIn preparation for SALA 2016 we are inviting artists to register their interest in The Art of Gardens. All mediums are welcome including works designed for the garden, or with a garden theme. Facing South East AsiaAn exhibition of photographs by Peter Barrien15 January - 5 February 2016

Exhibition:

Launch: Friday 15 January 6 pm

Launch guest: Allan Griffin, President of the S.A. Photographic Federation

Peter Barrien is a prize winning photographer who describes photography as “a creative and intellectual joy, which constantly challenges my view of the world. There is extraordinary diversity in the cultures of South East Asia. In particular Vietnam and Myanmar (Burma) reflect the full palette of human experience - hardship, aspirations, poverty, spiritual life and family. Their cultures are shaped by

Suzanne Gummow, retro bag

their ancient heritage, years of conflict, and profound political and social change. Somehow the world seems more alive in a market in Vietnam or the Shwedagon complex in Myanmar.”In this exhibition, Peter’s desire is to reflect the character of these particular Asian communities. His medium is the candid portrait. The rest is up to the viewer.
