Why Study Abroad? Why Study Abroad? Why Study Abroad? Why Study Abroad?

The advantages of studying abroad are countless. Perhaps, study abroad programsis one of the best practices of modern times, when there are simmering tensions and conflict situationbetween many countries, religions and regions around the globe. On an individual level, exposure to a totallydifferent system of living makes you delve deep into your own choices, aims and ambitions. It is in fact aprocess of self discovery. It creates a global personality out of you, with a deep respect for other cultures, and agreater understanding and appreciation of your own culture and way of living.

Understanding Benefits of Studying AbroadUnderstanding Benefits of Studying AbroadUnderstanding Benefits of Studying AbroadUnderstanding Benefits of Studying AbroadToday, a host of countries offer many studying options, and attract global student community towards theiracademic programs. It can positively affect the academic, social, cultural, personal and professional life of astudent.

Academic BenefitsAcademic BenefitsAcademic BenefitsAcademic BenefitsStudents who pursue courses abroad, are found to have a much clearer vision about their goals and way of achieving those. It helps foster greater inter-cultural communication, understanding, and tolerance forstudents from different academic or social backgrounds. You tend to develop a multidimensional view of yourstudies and approaches, which helps in getting the concepts understood in an excellent manner. In case, youare planning to learn foreign languages or some cultural studies, going to the place where it is practiced, is thebest form of learning. It creates a mature perspective of life and certainly interesting prospect for getting aglobally acceptable qualification.

Social and Cultural BenefitsSocial and Cultural BenefitsSocial and Cultural BenefitsSocial and Cultural BenefitsDuring the initial course of the study in a distant land, you may come across people and places who are totallystrangers, but turn to be very good friends by the time the course is completed. You begin to appreciatedifferent lifestyles and develop some really useful contacts abroad. Helping nature, better team work, knowing and respecting the manners and habits of self as well as other people, an enhanced problem solving abilitywith respect to adaptability and performing well on different platforms are some crucial and life changing experiences. You tend to be several steps ahead of your colleagues and competitors in understanding globalization and its impact on your own living.

Personal and Professional BenefitsPersonal and Professional BenefitsPersonal and Professional BenefitsPersonal and Professional BenefitsIn your daily life at homeland, there might be a variety of individuals with different sets of opinion, meeting you. Quite often, there are two categories of people. One type is extremely critical of the local place and everyaspect of life in your country and the other would be certain people who believe that their (your) country isthe best in the world, thus avoiding other countries as though they are simply not good to sustain life. Evenyou may fall in one of these categories. But one of the biggest benefits of studying abroad is that you begin torealize in a much clear and elaborate way, that no system in the world is perfect. It may foster a deeper and aclearer knowledge of your own land. You appreciate certain ways of life back home and at the same time learnfrom certain excellent living principles of other nations.

For instance, you may hate the diet constituents of your place, which in fact is highly nourishing. If youhappen to stay in a place where people barely eat healthy food, perhaps you may appreciate the food habits atyour own place like never before. This is true with respect to social, economic, cultural and developmentalaspect of your own society. You begin to accept your own land as it is, love its good aspects and strive toeliminate any of its anomalies. Professionally, you thrive in any region and condition because of a broader andmatured perspective about similarities and differences of lifestyles.

To sum up, studying abroad helps you to become a more responsible global citizen and enhance the qualityof your own life as well as of those around you.Source: http://buzzle.com/articles/benefits-of-studying-abroad.html

Study in Germany1.8 million students around the world go abroad to attend auniversity. Nearly one tenth of those students choose to come toGermany. Germany has a lot to offer to foreign students, be theyfirst-year students or postgraduates.

Germany's universities combine age-old traditions with moderntechnologies. More than 300 universities are featured onCampus Germany: from time-honored institutions offeringstudents the classical repertoire of subjects such as Medicine,

Law, English and German to innovative new institutions of higher education with inter-disciplinary study programs. Germanuniversities are open to anyone who fulfills the prerequisites andacademic freedom is one of the basic principles of the Germanuniversity system.

The German higher education system is relatively complex, witha number of options available to prospective students.Universities are the most popular venues where traditionalacademic subjects such as law, philosophy, mathematics, socialsciences etc are taught. Science and engineering students alsoattend universities. These are called Technical Universities or Technical Hochschulen. There are also university-level collegesof art, music and film.

Universities here combine research and study. They've been thescene of many groundbreaking discoveries and they'reinternationally renowned. German universities attract faculty andstudents from around the world. Modern German universitiesalso combine theoretical work with its practical application. Theyboth educate and train - basic research is augmented by appliedresearch. Interdisciplinary cooperation is common and many of them cooperate closely with multinational firms and with other research institutes in Germany and abroad. In the end, thisincreases the graduates' chances on the job market.

Many of today's students no longer want a purely theoreticaleducation. A variety of universities of applied science inGermany offer balanced academic training necessary for aprofessional career. Practical experience in regional companiesis often part of the curriculum. German companies are interestedin attracting well-trained graduates from abroad. And in manycases, these former students can continue to work for thecompany as a foreign spokesperson once they return home.

What does it cost to study in Germany? You still don't need to pay tuition fees at many Germanuniversities. While some meanwhile charge around 500 eurosper semester. Whether you have to pay fees or not dependsentirely on which federal state and at which university you are

studying. Contact your chosen university directly to find outwhether they charge tuition fees.

Costs that you will certainly have to pay each semester are thesemester contribution and the health insurance premiums(around 280 euros). The semester contributions are due whenyou register (matriculate) at the university and then eachsemester when your re-register at the Student Office. Dependingon university and federal state, these can amount to between 50and 250 euros. At some universities, this sum includes aSemesterticket. This allows you to use local public transport inand around your university town without any extra costs. Besides

these study-related costs, you also have to reckon with monthlyliving expenses of 630 euros on average. One third of this isgenerally spent on rent. How much money you actually needalso depends strongly on where you live.

International Students:Students from all over the world study and research at one of themore than 300 universities in Germany. They're enrolled atuniversities that have a wide range of scientific fields on offer or at universities of applied science with very specific, application-oriented programs.

Student Jobs:However, the amount of time you are allowed to work is limitedto 90 days per year or to a limited number of hours per week. Insome federal states, you are only allowed to work duringvacation.

Typical student jobs include working in a bar, office work, courier work, taxi driving (though you need a special permit for doingthis), hostess work on fairs (well paid) and street cleaning inwinter. Pay for student jobs is typically €7-15/hour. Vacanciesare often promoted on newspaper websites, via student unionsor the university. As part of their studies, many German studentsdo apprenticeships during their summer or winter holidays. These offer first-hand experience and direct contact withpotential employers. People leaving university without ever having worked in the "real world" might find it hard to get a job.

Universities often help with organizing appropriate internships, especially during summer vacation. For international internships, you can contact the international student union AISEC -www.aisec.de .

There are magazines that focus on career issues for universitystudents and young professionals, such as Junge Karriere. Itswebsite has information on employment perspectives in differentindustries, tips and tricks for writing CVs, a job spider whichsearches through different job engines, an list of headhuntersand information on career fairs - www.jungekarriere.com .

student visa. Official policy is that you must return to your homecountry before you can apply for a residency visa and workpermit. However, if your employer wants you to start working

quickly, this can be avoided by a lawyer making a petition onyour behalf.

Taxi Driver or Waiter?"Why do students get up at six? Because the supermarketsclose at half-past six." There's no shortage of jokes aboutstudents being lazy, but they really don't say much about thereality of student life today. Modern students don't just goshopping in the supermarket - they often work there, too. Twothirds of all students in Germany have to work to make endsmeet. If they don't get money from their parents, or don't qualifyfor government-sponsored student loans (known as BAFöG), astudent job is the only solution, for example as a waiter, ababysitter, or delivering pizzas.Often a student job is related to the student's field of study - music students work as bar pianists, business students get part time jobs in banks, medical students work as porters in hospitals.

Students are sought-after employees. As long as they do notwork more than 19.5 hours per week, employers are not required

to pay social insurance contributions for them, which makesthem cheaper than "ordinary workers."

The classic student job in Germany is taxi driver - an occupationthat quite a few students find themselves pursuing even after they graduate. It's not unusual for taxi passengers to discover their driver has a doctorate in history or modern languages. Butit's a student job with a noble tradition - even the former GermanForeign Minister Joschka Fischer was once a student taxi driver.

German Language:German universities are open to all interested students fromabroad who fulfill the academic entrance requirements. Thereare several examinations you can take. There is one exception, however: if you'd like to enroll in an international program taughtin English at a German university, you usually don't have toprove your proficiency in the German language. Instead, youneed to prove that your command of the English language isexcellent - you might have to present your TOEFL score (Test of English as a Foreign Language), for instance.

Study abroad myths & misconceptionsStudy abroad myths & misconceptionsStudy abroad myths & misconceptionsStudy abroad myths & misconceptions

Misinformation and outright falsehoods keep many students from even considering studyingabroad each year. Too many students mistakenly believe that there is no place in their academic plan or major fortime abroad or that study abroad is just a luxury that they can neither afford nor benefit from. Au contraire! Beloware some of the most common myths students believe about studying abroad and, more importantly, the facts thatdebunk them.

Myth #1: I have to study in an English-speaking country because I don't know any foreign languages. This is a common misconception. There are many study abroad programs that require no prior foreign languageinstruction and will provide you with intensive language classes at the beginning of your stay abroad. Otherprograms require just one semester of a language before you depart for a given country. It's true that the morelanguage background you have before you leave, the more immersed you can become once you arrive. However, you shouldn't let lack of skills in a language stop you from studying in a particular country. Study abroad programsin English-speaking countries are far more competitive than those in countries where other native languagesdominate. This is in part because so many students share the common misconception that their monolingualismrestricts their choices to English-speaking countries.

Myth #2: I'll have to extend my studies or won't graduate on time if I take time out to go abroad. The fact is that you can typically earn college credits while studying abroad, both toward fulfilling general educationrequirements as well as toward your major. In fact, study abroad can give your language skills such a boost thatadding a minor or even a second major in a language may require very few, if any, additional courses after youreturn to your home campus. In addition to year-long programs, many universities offer semester-long or summerprograms. And if it so happens that you must delay graduation for a few months to fit in studying abroad, what youwill gain from the experience far outweighs what you think you'd be sacrificing.

Myth #3: I don't have enough money to study abroad.Studying abroad often costs the same or even less than spending the same time at your home campus. Especiallyif you study in a country that has a lower cost of living than at home, your day-to-day living expenses may be farlower than those you are accustomed to. In addition, if you qualify for financial aid, you can still receive this aidwhile studying in an credit-earning study abroad program. Because your personal contribution is assumed to beless while abroad (since it's not expected you will be able to work while out of the country), you may even qualifyfor more aid for your study abroad year. For the same reason, students who have never qualified for financial aidmay do so for the first time when they decide to study abroad.

Myth #4: I can always travel later once I have a job and am earning money. That is just as good.

Easier said than done. Once you are locked into a job and responsibilities, it's very difficult to get away for anylength of time. You may have a difficult time getting the time off from work and you probably won't be able to affordunpaid vacation time because you will have locked yourself into long-term financial responsibilities: a car, rent

payments or a mortgage, credit cards, and family responsibilities, for example. In addition, traveling as a tourist is amuch different experience than living as an integrated part of a foreign culture. The two experiences areincomparably different. As a tourist, you will typically be seen as an outsider. When you live in a foreign culture andparticipate in its day-to-day life, you become an immersed and daily participant in the culture.

Myth #5: Only language majors study abroad.Study abroad programs are open to students of all majors, and in fact, more social sciences, business, humanities, and arts majors study abroad than foreign language majors. You certainly could add a language major to yourstudies as a result of your study abroad units, but you will also very likely be able to earn units for other majors aswell as to fulfill general education requirements at your university.

Myth #6: Study abroad is not for everyone. No matter what your major, gender, ethnic background, or interests, studying in a foreign country can benefit youpersonally, academically, and professionally. There are a myriad of programs available around the world. Thereare sure to be several that suit your needs and interests.

Myth #7: Study abroad is a luxury. Some students (and their parents) believe that studying abroad is not really studying. Quite the contrary! It's truethat the academic setting will probably be different than what you are used to, but that doesn't make it any lessvaluable. In addition to the formal instruction you receive, numerous learning experiences will happen outside theclassroom - experiences you would never get at your home college or university. The entire experience abroad willchange your life as well as enhance your resume and employment potential. In fact, international experience isincreasingly important for those seeking a job in an global economy that relies on good relations and the ability tocommunicate with diverse peoples around the world. If you talk to anybody who has ever studied abroad, they will likely tell you that any worries or concerns they hadbefore they departed melted away once they arrived in their host country. They will confirm to you that theirexperience was well worth any extra expense or time it may have taken and that the benefits they haveexperienced as a result are more numerous and lasting than they ever could have imagined.

Canadian ImmigrationCanadian ImmigrationCanadian ImmigrationCanadian Immigration

Canada uses a point system to assess all Independent/Skilled Worker applicants. To be eligible for permanent residence in Canada, youmust obtain at least 67 points in the point assessment.

HOW THE POINTS ARE DETERMINED:There are six factors to consider in pre-determining how many points you should receive:1. Education (maximum 25 points), You must have a college or university degree.- College or Bachelor: 22 points - Master/PhD: 25 points2. Languages (English and/or French)(maximum 25 points):- First language: 16 points - Second language: 8 points3. Work Experience (maximum 21 points)- 1 year: 15 points - 2 years: 17 points - 3 years: 19 points - 4 years: 21 points4. Age (maximum 10 points)You will get the maximum of 10 if you are between 21 and 44. If you are under 18 or older than 48, you will get zero for age. If you are 18or 47, you score only 4 points for age.5. Arranged Employment in CanadaValid Job offer will bring you 10 points6. Adaptability (maximum 10 points) : Including previous work or study in Canada, arranged employment, relative in Canada andpartner’s education. Suitability determined in the interview after you apply to immigrate to Canada as a skilled immigrate applicant.

Note: Quebec has some additional requirements for immigrants: basically amounting to that they want you to speak French. Many of theother provinces also have a say in what types of skills their looking for in immigrants, and the points system will be tailored for thatprovinces needs.

IELTS Score: If the score in the language test is between band 7.0 and 9.0, then four immigration points are awarded for that parameter. It is important to note that the immigration points are awarded for each individual parameter and not just the overall band and then added

up. If score is between band 5.0 to 6.9, two immigration points are awarded. If score is less than band 5.0, no immigration points areawarded for that parameter.

What is a Visa?A visa is a stamp or sticker placed in your passport giving you permission to enter a country for thementioned period. A visa may be single or multiple-entry. Most student visas are multiple-entry, whichmeans that you can travel in and out of the countrymany times before the visa expiry date. Visitor Visas orLimited Purpose Visas normally just allow a singleentry.

Student Visa Types for USAHundreds of thousands of people come to the UnitedStates from around the world to study and improvetheir skills. Numerous programs provide a wide varietyof learning opportunities. There is no annual quota forthe student visas. All qualified students receive visas. There are three major types of student visas:

Academic studies (F visa):For people who want to study or conduct research at an accredited U.S. college or University.

Academic studies as an Exchange Visitor (J visa):For people who will be participating in an exchangevisitor program in the United States. The "J" visa is theprimary visa for educational and cultural exchangeprograms

Non-Academic or Vocational Studies (M Visa):For people who want to study or train at a non-academic institution in the U.S.

The Consular Officer spoke to me only for twominutes and then denied my application for a visa. How can one get any impression of a person in sucha short time?Unfortunately, due to the large number of applications, the consular officer cannot devote more time tointerviewing applicants and reviewing visaapplications. Therefore, you have to try to present yourcase in a most concise and, at the same time, comprehensive manner. Furthermore, your documentsare being reviewed from the moment you file yourapplication and pay the consular fee. In other words, before your application reaches the officer's desk, it has been pre-processed and reviewed by other people.

Can my American friends, relatives or businesspartners help me to get a VISA?

Your friends, relatives or business partners mayprovide a letter of invitation or support. However, thiscannot guarantee visa issuance. Visa applicants must qualify for the visa according to their owncircumstances, not on the basis of an Americansponsor's assurance.

Who can influence the Consular Officer to reverse adecision?Immigration law delegates the responsibility forissuance or refusal of visas to consular officersoverseas. They have the final say on all visa cases.Neither the Head of the mission, nor other stateofficials and governmental bodies can influence theconsular officer's decision. Their intervention can beonly of a recommendatory or informative nature. TheU.S. Department of State has the authority to reviewconsular decisions, but this authority is limited to theinterpretation of the law, as contrasted with thedetermination of facts. Assessment of ties abroad is afactual issue, and thus is not the authority of the U.S.Department of State.

I had all the documents about my job, property andrelatives. I think I have very strong ties. Why was Idenied?According to Section 214 (b), "…every alien shall bepresumed to be an immigrant until he establishes tothe satisfaction of the consular officer, at the time of application for admission, that he is entitled to anonimmigrant status." In other words, the consularofficer has to get enough evidence that the applicant has strong ties to the country of his residence and doesnot intend to immigrate to the United States. If youwere denied a visa, the information you presented wasnot enough to convince the officer of your strong ties tohome country.

I have been twice rejected earlier for USA, Howmany times can I apply and do I have to follow thedrop box facility now?You can apply as many times as per the new system. There is no drop box facility in the new system. However, the visa officer can grant visa when they seethe change in your earlier profile that you hadsubmitted during your last visa interview. Hence, it does not make any sense to reapply for visa with thesame profile. I would suggest you to understand whythey have rejected your visa and try to improve yourprofile accordingly, so as to brighten your visa chancesin your next visa interview.

I have been rejected for Canada visa earlier; will it affect my US s tudent visa?

Your Canada visa rejection will not affect your USstudent visa. USA consulate will take this a fresh casefor visa. You chance of getting US visa will depend on

your existing profile and finances. It will also dependon your visa interview and your intention to go to USAfor studies.

Do I have to mention my relatives staying in USA?You need to mention if you have parents / brothers /sisters / sons / daughters staying in USA. Regardingyour other relatives it all depends how close they are inrelation to you or your family and whether you arevisiting USA on their invitation or if they are yoursponsors for visa purpose.

My uncle in USA is my sponsor for my F1 visa. He is

a green card holder and has been in US for morethan 11 years now. Will my uncle as a sponsoraffect my US visa chances? The visa officer would be interested to know why yourparents are not sponsoring your US education. Youruncle in US will only affect your visa chances if theintentions of your studying in US and your sponsor titleis not clear.

I have my US visa date on July 12th, 2008. I wish toknow what should I expect from the visa interviewand how should my approach be towards the wholevisa process?

I want to first wish you Best of Luck! for your visainterview on 12th July, I hope you succeed in gettingyour US visa. There are two major reasons of refusal, one is potential immigrant (the visa officer with the answers and documents submitted feels that you may not come back to your home country if granted visa.) and second isinsufficiency of fund (self explanatory). If you can fulfillthese two reasons than you have very high chances of getting your US visa.Your approach towards the whole visa process shouldbe positive and hopeful. You should speak truth andmake your intentions clear regarding your visit to USA.

Please carry all relevant documents of yourself andyour sponsor during the visa interview. Please reach at least 30 minutes before the schedule visa appointment time.

I have my family investments of Rs. 5 crores inproperty and bank balance & fixed deposit of Rs. 3lakhs for my US education. I have been accepted byUSC Marshal School of Business for my MBAprogram. The cost of education is USD 40,000 peryear and the duration of program is 2 years. Willthe existing funds be sufficient towards thefinancial requirement of my US student visa?

At the outset your fund does not seem to be sufficient for your cost of education. Property as investment isnot considered as funds for your education. Your

family can sell part or whole of the property anddeposit the sale proceeds of the property to beconsidered as liquid funds for your education. Besidesfunds like Shares, Bonds, Debentures, Mutual funds,Postal savings, LIC policies surrender value; etc can beadded to the funds available for meeting the cost of USeducation. You could also approach the bank foreducation loan as the present education loan policies of banks take less time to process and are reasonablysimplified. In case you cannot meet anything that is mentioned inthe above paragraph than I would suggest you to stillapproach the visa interview with positive feeling. Youhave been accepted by one of the Ivy Leagueuniversities of USA and if you could express yourintentions clearly to the visa officer than you have afairly good chance of getting your US visa. The visaofficer looks at your overall profile and he may findyour overall profile good enough to grant you USstudent visa even if your finances is not sufficient at the moment.

My father is a government employee working inexcise department. His annual income is Rs. 1,60,000/-. My mother is a housewife and I have 2

VISA MYTHS Officers have reported hearing several of followingmyths when conducting informational sessions for students:

>>> There is a limit to how many student visas areissued each year, so if you apply too late you will beautomatically refused. FALSE! >>> Anyone who is a medical doctor or is going tostudy medicine will automatically be refused. FALSE! >>> You have to pay the tuition in advance in order toapply for a student visa. FALSE! >>> If you do not meet a minimum score on any of thestandardized test you will automatically be refused.FALSE!

You may have already guessed from the term“myths” that the answer to each of these questions isan emphatic “NO!” There is no limit on how many student visas are issued every year; there is no bar tovisa issuance for medical doctors; there is norequirement that any tuition fees are paid in advance;and there is no minimum score for any standardized test. So the next time you hear one, know that they are just that: myths.

In conclusion? As in years past, many bright and capable students from India will continue to pursue higher studies in theUnited States, and will continue to represent a valued segment of college students in the US.

younger brothers and 1 younger sister. My father’stotal saving is Rs. 14, 00,000/- plus I have beengranted educational loan of Rs. 7, 00,000/-. I have

been accepted by US University for my MBAprogram. Will I be able to get my US visa with theexisting funds? You do not get US F1 visa only because of your fundsavailability. The visa officer will be interested to knowthe University, what have you done to secureadmission in that University, your test scores and yourintention of doing MBA from US, etc, besides thefinance that you have mentioned. You have not mentioned your cost of US education forme to calculate whether the existing funds aresufficient or not. However, I assume that you have beenaccepted by an average university from US and MBA

program should cost you approximately around Rs. 14lakhs (tuition, accommodation and living expensestaken together for one year). In such case you wouldhave to justify your case well enough for the visaofficer to grant you US visa as your total funds are not sufficient to meet your total two years of MBA programcost. Also you have three younger siblings and youhave just your father has the only earning member tosupport you and your three younger siblings whichcould affect visa officer decision.

I have been rejected four times earlier for US visa. Ihave been rejected once on B1/B2 visa and thrice

on F1 visa. The last time I appeared for my US F1visa, I was told by visa officer not to apply again. What do I do know? Can the visa officer tell the visa

applicant not to apply for visa again?I assume that you have either not tried to improveyour profile or not presented your case well. The visaofficer is unbiased towards visa applicants. I have beenapproached lot many times during my 9 years by visaapplicant after their visa refusal for their visacounseling. I would ideally suggest student to taketheir visa counseling before getting any refusal. Thesesame visa applicants later were successful in gettingtheir US visa and the only difference was that theywere able to present their visa case well. In some cases,I have even suggested to improve their profile and not to re-attempt visa immediately. They have followed my

advice and were successful in getting their visa in theirnext visa attempt.

What the visa officer states in your case is not toreappear with the same profile as the visa officerunderstands that your earlier profile and the recent profile were same. The visa officer in such cases wouldfind it difficult to grant you F1 visa. You have toimprove your profile before applying for visa again forthe visa officer to feel that you are a serious applicant. Please take a six months gap and improve your profilebefore your next visa attempt.
