The latest book discussed by our discussion group was A Christmas Memory by Truman Capote. Hallmark made a movie based on this short story and we watched it as well. Most of the group enjoyed this one. Although we aren't planning to read the book at this time, the discussion group is scheduled to watch Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3 at the library. Our discussion group will be joining the One Book Wyoming program and we will read Craig Johnson's Spirit of Steamboat for our next book. We will meet and talk about the book at 7 p.m. Monday, March 3. This will be the group's thirty-ninth book! Our winter reading program ends on Jan. 31. So far we have had 78 participants. Currently we are making plans to have artwork by some of the students in Milo Warren's art classes at the Kaycee School, put on display in the library. In our children's section, our little ones will find several new puppets and a couple of new kits that contain a book by Bill Martin, Jr., the audio CD of that book, and a puppet to go with the book.

excited to see the architectural plan for the Expansion on display at the Library.

She shared with her friends the successes of the John Scully Foundation Trust which has been granting college scholarships for engineering students at two of John’s alma maters—South Dakota School of Mines and Purdue. She mentioned that the Foundation had not yet expended all their funds for 2013. Into that pause, Library Director Cynthia dropped the question, “Would there be an opportunity to request some of those funds for the Library Expansion?” Pat said she would check on it. Three days later she reported that the advisors of the fund were in support of the Library’s request. She thought about $10,000 would be available. The day of the Library Auction she was notified that the amount would be $42,000! There was certainly much to celebrate that night!

This is not the first time the Library has benefitted from the generosity of John Scully. After his death in 2008, Pat was the executor of his estate. Her message to Director Twing one summer day was, “I think I’m about to make your day.” What an understatement! The Library Foundation received $108,000 from the estate which was immediately applied to the Wyoming Library Endowment Fund. It became $324,000 with the State match. Additionally, the Friends of the Library became heir to his vast collection of books. Their fundraising efforts were alleviated with the proceeds from a huge book sale.

The Johnson County Library Foundation will continue to seek grant funds. Successful gathering of these funds will lessen the amount of the request for the Expansion Project which will be on the 2014 ballot.

which time sufficient funds are raised by the tax for the expansion project. The library board believes that a one cent specific purpose sales tax is the

fairest means for funding the project. This approach, which has been successfully used in other Wyoming communities for library facility improvements, would spread the cost. It is not a tax on property. Out-of-county visitors making purchases in Johnson County would help us pay for the library expansion. There are currently 49 exemptions from the proposed specific purpose sales tax, including groceries, gasoline, prescription items, farm implements, livestock, and others. The library board is seeking to expand the current library by an additional 10,000 sq. ft. In September 2012, the Johnson County Library Foundation contracted with Plan One Architects of Cody, Wyoming to create the design for the expansion. Buffalo professionals were included in the engineering work. This was completed in August 2013. We are ready for construction. The plans are available for review at the Library.
