He was born in Easton, Maryland in February,

1818

Born the son a white of man and a slave woman.

His full name is Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey.

As a boy, Frederick secretly taught himself how to read and write.

•He escaped from slavery in September of 1838 at the age of 20.

•Frederick’s public-speaking skills impressed the members of the Anti-Slavery Society.

•Because of this, the society asked him to give regular lectures in 1841.

•Also, Douglass became one of the best-known speaker in the United States.

•He wrote several autobiographies, too.

•Frederick Douglass spoke at a Forth of July celebration in 1852.

Frederick Douglass published his own pro-abolition newspaper, The North Star, in 1847. It was published until 1860.
