BACKROUND

-Real name: Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey.

- Changed his name to fool slave hunters.- Born around February 1818, in Tuckahoe,

Maryland.

SLAVERY IN HIS LIFE-He was born into slavery, and he escaped at

age 20. - Secretly as a child he learned illegally to read

and write. - He fled to England, and with his friends’ help

he eventually he bought his freedom in 1847.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

- Made many great speeches country-wide. - Produced his own paper called “The North

Star”. - Became the Minster of Haiti(1889-1891).- Appointed U.S. Marshall of District of

Colombia(1877-1881).- Met with President Lincoln t discuss the

unfair treatment of blacks.

FAMILY

- Married a free woman named Anna Murray. - They had five children together.

END OF HIS LIFE

-Died on February 20, 1895 at the age of 77. - The cause of death was a heart
