Business support of public education significantly increases student achievement. Partnership activities allow students to expand their learning horizons, have more interest in school, earn better grades and realize a deeper understanding of their role in society as it relates to becoming productive citizens. The school system’s strength and success are directly linked to the generous contributions of talent and resources from community and business partners.

Trout eggs are delivered annually to schools in over 20 states in the Mid-Atlantic through a program called Trout in the Classroom, the East Coast’s answer to a program out West called Salmon in the Classroom. Maryland has the largest all-volunteer Trout in the Classroom program.

This year, 22 schools in Frederick County participated in the program, accepting hundreds of trout eggs and raising the trout until they are released into nearby creeks in the summer.

Trout in the Classroom is a hands-on environmental program in which students raise Kamloops rainbow trout from eggs to fingerling, manage chilled tank water quality, engage in stream habitat study, learn to appreciate water resources, develop a conservation ethic, and are taught to understand ecosystem connectivity.

Students at Myersville Elementary, through scientific investigation, had to figure out why all of their fish were dying. “We didn’t know why,” said Melissa Hargreaves, the fifth-grade teacher who supervises the program and environmental club. “When I go back to look at the data the kids collected last year, you see entries — 15 dead in one day. It was heartbreaking. The kids would get so sad.”

Mrs. Hargreaves and her students discovered that salt from their building’s water softener system was

entering the fish tank, killing the babies. “My fifth-graders, when we were talking about

it, were like, ‘Oh, my gosh, Mrs. Hargreaves, what about that salt they put on the highways? It’s running right off into the creeks,’” she said. “They started to get very environmentally aware of the effects of our impact. It really brings the outside into our schools.”

Chuck Dinkel, Maryland Trout in the Classroom coordinator says that through raising the trout in a classroom, students are forced to solve problems as they arise -- things like adjustments to the water temperature, and the amount of oxygen being funneled into the tank or the frequency with which the water is changed. Students learn to understand what the water is telling them through pH and other tests.

For the first two years a school participates in the program, Dinkel helps set up and support the school with maintaining the tank and equipment.

Dinkel says, “I tell the kids, if you have a problem, I’ll come in. But do some problem-solving first. And I’ll tell you, these kids start to figure out what to do and make these connections.” When the fish are released, students often go to the approved release site and participate in activities comparing the

river’s water and learning about what the fish will eat once they are released.

“We are learning how to really use the chemicals and how the trout develop,” fifth-grade student Megan Mahoney said. “It’s really cool that we have them actually in the classroom and can watch them every single day. Seeing how they develop and how cool it is, the amount of science that goes into it, really helps us discover what fish really do.”

LINKING YOUTHTO NEWEXPERIENCES

“Linking Youth to New eXperiences”- LYNX - is thriving within the Frederick community thanks to the support of over 135 partnerships.

LYNX partners representing local businesses, community organizations, and institutes of higher education are united by a common goal: to provide ongoing high-impact learning experiences that will empower Frederick High School students to engage with their community and plan for their futures.

FHS students in grades 9-12 are inspired by LYNX partners to get involved, give back, and appreciate what the community of Frederick offers its citizens.

Since 2017, LYNX partners including TransIT and the Downtown Frederick Partnership have offered FHS students the chance to explore the many opportunities right here in their backyard.

Through LYNX, high school students can chart their own success plans by interacting with a network of professional advocates. For example, AstraZeneca scientists help students understand how to navigate a career in the pharmaceutical industry by engaging students in hands-on experimentation and safe laboratory practices, while EDCO professionals teach that manufacturing in Frederick is “alive and

well” by involving LYNX students in the creation of a product using CAD design.

Whether a LYNX student is volunteering with the United Way of Frederick, touring Hood College, or co-teaching lessons to preschoolers at Little Lights Child Development Center, the experiential learning opportunities provided by LYNX partners enable students to explore the positive contributions they can make as productive citizens.

The Frederick County Public Schools’ Career and Technology Center (CTC) and the Frederick County Students Construction Trades Foundation, Inc. (FCSCTF) were excited to announce the completion of the 32nd student house project at 7192 Peekskill Drive in Frederick.

Students broke ground in February 2018 for the single-story, craftsman-style home with 1,870 square feet of living space. Features include a great room with fireplace, dining room, master bedroom with walk-in closet, one additional bedroom, and an office. The home also boasts a 3-car garage/workshop and a full unfinished basement.

Local student house projects began in 1978 when educators and business representatives came together to develop an opportunity for students to learn about careers in the construction trades. The program includes instruction in computer-aided design, construction electricity, HVAC/Plumbing, environmental landscape design and management, carpentry and cabinet making.

All houses the students build receive the same government inspections as any other dwelling in Frederick, and they are therefore under constant scrutiny. In addition to these inspections, CTC instructors and professional contractor members of various program-advisory committees carefully review the work performed.

It takes a lot of people and coordination to make the student house project successful. In addition to the FCSCTF providing the opportunity, FCPS provides the training facility, instructors and equipment at the CTC. The FCPS Transportation Department provides the bus service and maintains the vehicles required to transport equipment. Also critical to the program’s success are partnerships with local businesses and construction professionals. More than 100 businesses donated time and/or materials.

The Rotary Club of Frederick sponsored high school students on a trip to Ethiopia. Career and Technology Center (CTC) students created a prototype stove that will provide clean drinking water to Melka Oba, a rural school in Ethiopia, and its surrounding community.

The rotary club’s international committee’s project was to install a pipeline to bring clean water to the school, but that would have taken two years and cost about $150,000.

To provide a quicker alternative, rotary member Jo Elizabeth Butler reached out to Phil Arnold, computer-aided design architecture and engineering instructor at the CTC, and with his students brainstormed solutions.

About 20 students worked on the prototype, a rocket stove, for about three years, according to John Kriner, computer-aided design architecture and engineering instructor.

The Rotary Club of Frederick sponsored the project. Donations came in from individuals and other clubs such as the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek and the Frederick County Building Industry Association.

The funds covered the groups’ travel expenses, costing about $23,000, according to Anne Rollins, president of the Rotary Club of Frederick.

“We’re just happy to be able to support the Career and Technology Center students to help us fulfill our mission for international service,” Rollins said. “This project was helpful in a more expedited manner to provide clean water to the village.”

“Over the last ten years we’ve supported a lot of great programs with FCPS,” said BNBI President, Dr. George Korch. “But this one, that allows teachers to tell us what they need, really defines our STEM partnership.”

During a month-long competition with Battelle National Biodefense Institute (BNBI), teachers from 21 elementary, middle and high schools developed and submitted 26 STEM grant proposals. Eleven were selected as winners. Each of the 11 selected projects received between $1,869 and $5,000, based on their proposed budgets, totaling a $50,000 science, technology, engineering and mathematics grant from BNBI.

“FCPS students and teachers are passionate about STEM education. You can see that so clearly in the creativity of this year’s winning proposals,” said FCPS Superintendent Dr. Terry Alban. “I’m so proud of our winners, and I’m looking forward to seeing how this year’s projects will impact STEM education across Frederick County.”

Seven of the winning grant applications came from elementary schools; one from a middle school; and three from high schools. The 11 winning proposals came from the following 10 schools: Ballenger Creek Elementary, Ballenger Creek Middle, Hillcrest Elementary, Middletown Elementary, Monocacy Elementary (2), Oakdale High, Rock Creek School, Thurmont Elementary, Thurmont Primary, and Tuscarora High.

“Over the last ten years we’ve supported a lot of great programs with FCPS,” said BNBI President, Dr. George Korch. “But this one, that allows teachers

to tell us what they need, really defines our STEM partnership.”

The FCPS/BNBI STEM partnership was established in 2009 with the long-term goal of getting more students interested in and better prepared to major in math, the hard sciences or engineering in college. Since its inception BNBI has directly gifted $433,000 to FCPS, and BNBI staff has committed thousands of hours of time to assisting curricula development, classroom instruction, and outside of the classroom STEM activities.

The Battelle National Biodefense Institute, LLC is a non-profit Maryland company. BNBI is a wholly owned subsidiary of Battelle. Since 2006 BNBI has operated and managed the National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center, located on Fort Detrick, for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center.

Since 2011, Frederick County Public Schools’ Young Scholars’ program has been going strong. Young Scholars are students with academic potential who may lack advocates, access, and affirmation; members of populations underrepresented in advanced academic programs – African American, Hispanic, English Learners, and students who receive free and reduced-price meals. Once identified, students are invited to remain part of the Young Scholars cohort throughout their years in FCPS. This year, we worked closely with FCC and Hood College to provide experiences for our students on their campuses. We also appreciated a visit from a sergeant from the Frederick County Sheriff ’s Office Narcotics Unit to speak to the high school students about the impact of illegal substances on the brain. Costco graciously donated a cake for our high school program during our Sit Down Dessert Event, and for the second year in a row, Import Genius donated money for our student and staff T-shirts.

Youth ApprenticeshipsIn 2016, Frederick County Public Schools was

selected as one of two counties in Maryland to pilot the Maryland Youth Apprenticeship “Earn and Learn” Program. Participating students work during the summer after the junior year and during the senior year in a state-approved industry. They work with a mentor to learn valuable skills and earn industry credentials and high school credit. Several FCPS youth apprentices have received offers of full-time employment at the conclusion of their apprenticeships.

The program is a partnership between the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, the Maryland State Department of Education, the Department of Commerce, FCPS, community educational and business partners, and area employers. FCPS takes the lead in coordinating student placements.

The program requires that eligible employers hire Apprenticeship Maryland participants in eligible career track occupations in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) and manufacturing. Students also receive training in employability skills, interpersonal/social skills and general knowledge of the world of work.

Career and Technology Education Supervisor Dr. Kristine Pearl said, “Through Youth Apprenticeship, FCPS is able to collaborate with our industry partners to provide truly meaningful career training for our students, which, in many cases, is changing the trajectory of their lives.”

Participating employers and apprentices include Alban CAT, All Around Plumbing, Ben Lewis Plumbing, Bopat Electric, Dustin Construction, Dynamic Automotive, Fountaindale Automotive, FCPS Technology and Communication Services departments, Frederick Memorial Hospital, Toothman Orthodontics, and Trivergent.

In May, Frederick County Public Schools held our first Career Signing Day for Career & Technology Center seniors and students completing Youth Apprenticeships! This year, high school seniors completing intensive CTC programs or apprenticeships and their future employers gathered in the Frederick Community College JBK Theater for the big event.

“We’re extremely proud of these students’ achievements and appreciate the business partnerships that have helped prepare them to enter the workforce and continue their career training,” said Dr. Kristine Pearl, FCPS Career and Technology Education supervisor. “These students have made the most of their time in high school, many earning industry certifications and college credits in two- and three-year career-preparatory programs. They have secured their futures earlier than many of their peers. Their focus and determination are commendable.”

The Frederick County Career and Technology Education Advisory Council sponsored the celebration. More than 20 students and employers signed letters of intent, with family and others present to support them.

effort to create a “soft skills” series, which matches professional mentors with groups of 10th grade LYNX students. Through this series, 20 LYNX partners visit students monthly to provide guidance on workplace skills, including how to make a great first impression and build a network of contacts.

Our partners at Frederick Community College provide multiple personalized sessions for students to explore the various departments and educational opportunities FCC has to offer. A new “Career Pathway Dual Enrollment” option will launch soon as a result of the FCC-LYNX partnership!

LYNX Advocates at Frederick High School make multiple visits to the feeder middle schools to explain to 8th graders the many opportunities that are available with LYNX partners. As LYNX partnerships continue to grow, look for more informational gatherings for parents and the community. LYNX begins Year 3 during the 2019-20 school year!

LYNX partnerships are sustained by strong relationships between partners and the students and staff at Frederick High School. Over 135 partners regularly support and interact with FHS students both on and off campus, sharing the responsibility to inspire students to achieve their highest potential by “Linking Youth to New eXperiences” and investing in students’ growth.

LYNX partners, such as Dr. Walter Hubert of the National Cancer Institute of Frederick, make multiple visits to Frederick High School to discuss opportunities and make personal connections with students about their educational pathways and career aspirations.

LYNX partner Lawrence Casanova of RE/MAX Results designed a six-part series to help students identify their passions and create vision boards to guide their future planning.

The team of professionals at Frederick County Workforce Services designed team-building and role-playing activities to help students understand workplace dynamics. Wes Leatherman led the

Because of the amazing dedication of the Frederick community, our devoted staff, and the support and involvement of our children’s families, Valley Elementary won the nationwide vote to bring $100,000 home to Frederick County from the Farmers Insurance Thank America’s Teachers Dream Big Teacher Challenge!

Ms. Jill Barnes, who wrote one of the five winning proposals, got to realize her vision for a mobile literacy clinic that travels to teach students throughout local communities during summer and extended breaks. The school also put a significant portion of the Thank America’s Teachers grant toward literacy instruction materials, including high quality, high interest texts for classroom instruction. Principal Tracy Poquette is thrilled that the win will prove immensely beneficial to students in Frederick County.

People throughout Frederick County and the whole of Maryland rallied to help Valley Elementary garner Marylanders’ votes to win the grant. Ultimately, it’s the community’s support for this exciting program that makes a positive difference for students as they work to master reading goals.

“I couldn’t be happier or more proud and thankful for all the enthusiasm and dedication that made this a reality,” says Superintendent Dr. Terry Alban. “Our students are the real winners, supported by excellent employees, caring families and an engaged community.”

Signifying the year 2019, Stauffer Funeral Home donated $2,019, FERKO Maryland Federal Credit Union donated $500, Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre donated tickets valued at $100, and Fountain Rock Restaurant Group (Brewer’s Alley) donated a $150 gift certificate.

High schoolers participated in a real-life version of the “Game of Life” when Nymeo Federal Credit Union partnered with the Maryland | DC Credit Union Association, Hood College, Frederick County Public Schools and other credit unions and organizations to hold a Financial Reality Fair at Hood College’s Athletic Center.

“The Reality Fair provided students with a unique perspective on money management and gave them the proper tools to make smart financial decisions that will help them once they begin life outside of school,” said Vicki Johnston, Nymeo’s President and CEO. “Nymeo was pleased to be able to provide this eye-opening experience to students.”

Over 60 volunteers from Nymeo, local businesses, organizations, Hood College, FCPS, and other credit unions provided support during the event. Students arrived at the Reality Fair with assigned careers, based on personal interests, along with a salary. Next they had to determine how to live within their means, all while paying for needs like housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, and food.

“Financial literacy is a critical life skill for students,” says FCPS Superintendent Dr. Terry Alban. “Events like this, which make financial education fun and interactive, make a real impact in the lives of young people. FCPS is grateful to Nymeo and all the partners who made this event possible. We’re proud to partner with them.”

Aside from basic needs, students had to consider additional spending for entertainment, pets, memberships, and other extra expenses that occur in life. Students were also required to spin a “Wheel of Life,” which caused well-planned budgets to go off balance with unexpected expenses or windfalls.

“Hood College applauds Nymeo for providing this important learning opportunity for students; we are proud to host and support this event,” said Hood College President Dr. Andrea Chapdelaine. “It

gave the students an opportunity to visit college and learn that one of the best investments they can make in their financial future is a college education.”

This was the first financial Reality Fair held in Frederick County. Aside from the Reality Fair, Nymeo has worked with FCPS in providing online financial literacy programs for teachers and students, in-class workshops, supporting various educational enrichment programs, offering college scholarships and sponsoring several high school Millionaire’s Clubs.

“Nymeo’s partnership has helped schools provide many financial literacy and STEM opportunities for students. In addition to supporting events like Millionaire’s Club, Future Link, Startup Frederick and the STEM Showcase, Nymeo promotes employee visits to classrooms to educate students and staff on financial literacy. This past year, they also partnered to run our first-ever Reality Fair for high school students, a unique simulation activity in which students apply their financial-literacy skills as they experience some of the financial challenges they will face when they begin living independently. Stuff the Bus was a jam-packed event! More than 7,500 students benefited from the school-supply drive, with more than 85,000 items donated. It took more than 100 volunteers to load buses that picked up donations from 130 collection sites throughout the county.

As in prior years, the Frederick County Public Schools’ Community Agency School Services (CASS) Program partnered with the United Way of Frederick County in the Stuff the Bus campaign. More than 50 Frederick businesses and organizations made it easy for the public to participate. Some of the locations were Costco, the Frederick Keys Baseball Stadium, JC Penney, KinderCare Learning Centers, Krispy Kreme-Frederick, Macy’s, the Pediatric Center, Roy Rogers, Target, Wegmans, the YMCA and multiple banks.

Supplies needed ranged from sturdy backpacks and composition books to loose-leaf paper, pocket folders, glue sticks, safety scissors, pens and pencils, highlighters and erasers. Also requested were colored markers, index cards, spiral notebooks, rulers and boxes of tissues. CASS coordinators provided the

supply list and coordinated the Stuff the Bus drive with assistance from several community partners.

Distribution sites included the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Stake Center with assistance from the Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs, the Glade Valley Food Bank/Town Hall Basement with assistance from Glade Valley Community Services, Graceham Moravian Church, Middletown United Methodist Church with assistance from Middletown Valley People Helping People, and the Steadman-Keenan American Legion with assistance from BEACON.

Every year it brings us great joy to see the big yellow school buses riding around town visiting businesses with a single mission in mind – equipping our students to achieve.

When a community comes together to help families become their child’s most important influence, the home-school-community connection becomes stronger than ever. By focusing on academic and non-academic learning, we’re able to provide resources to reach the whole child and encourage growth in numerous ways including social, emotional, physical and academic. By engaging families and building caring relationships with them, we offer our youth supportive networks of people to help expand their horizons and get them ready to learn.

Frederick County Public Schools partnered with Nymeo Federal Credit Union and the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce in this year’s Startup Frederick contest.

Student finalists from every public high school in Frederick County tested their business acumen in the fourth year of the local competition, modeled on the TV show Shark Tank. Prizes totaling $4,500 donated by Nymeo Federal Credit Union were divided amongst the 10 finishers.

Competitors pitched an entrepreneurial concept and business plan to a panel of leading business people who served as judges. The 10 finalists, each of whom had won the school-level competition, had up to five minutes to pitch their ideas and another five minutes to answer questions.

Students were judged in five categories: creativity/innovation, product/service clarity, market potential, competitive landscape, and operational sustainability.

LYNX partner organizations, such as the Independent Hose Company and the Frederick Police Department, encourage Frederick High School students to consider the safety and well-being of all of Frederick’s citizens. FHS LYNX student Zoe Carnegis designed and facilitated a series of LYNX experiences for her peers at the Independent Hose Company so they could discover more about how the IHC protects and serves the community:

“I grew up in the fire service. It has become a big part of my life, and I have learned so much from it. I want to be able to share with my peers the opportunities that I have acquired, and LYNX partnerships allow me to do just that.”

At the June 5, 2019 LYNX Partner recognition event, FHS 9th grader Alex Sohm, Class of 2022, spoke of the impact LYNX partners have already had on his outlook and future plans. During his remarks to LYNX partners, Alex shared:

“LYNX partner experiences allow students to explore their options and get a better idea of what they want to do after high school. For me, being a LYNX scholar has done two major things: First, I have a better idea of the opportunities that are around me. Second, I have an idea of what it truly is like in some of the career paths I am considering.

It wasn’t until I participated in LYNX events that I knew that companies with government and international contracts like En Net and Yakabod are right here in Frederick. I don’t need to move to New York or Los Angeles and spend thousands of dollars on small apartments for good jobs.”

Alex concluded by sharing that he is “excited to see how much clearer our futures will be” as a result of four full years of LYNX partnerships.

Frederick County Public Schools and Frederick County Public Libraries are natural partners. It was an easy decision for FCPS Superintendent Dr. Terry Alban and FCPL Director James Kelly to renew their systems’ partnership agreement.

In support of the partnership, FCPL enables schools to sign students up for public library cards and fine-free access. The partnership provides students access to online materials and library programs even if they can’t get to their local library. In addition, county libraries explore possibilities for hosting FCPS student interns. The partnership also provides a way for students to participate in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee and summer reading programs.

Public Knowledge“These are excellent opportunities for our

students,” said Superintendent Alban. “Our students clearly benefit when public library staff and public school staff work cooperatively. This partnership offers so many possibilities for us and is bound to continue to deliver positive results for our students and the community.”

“Thanks to this partnership, students will have greater access to the variety of learning resources offered by Frederick County Public Libraries,” said FCPL Youth Services Manager Janet Vogel. “From language learning tools to help preparing for a driver’s test, there’s something for every student.”

Frederick County Public Schools and Eliminating Achievement Gaps partner annually to offer a CommUNITY Resource Fair countywide back-to-school event to help families become acclimated with FCPS and the Frederick community. The evening includes access to school and community resources, student demonstrations, free dinner and school supplies, giveaways and door prizes.

Students participate in hands-on activities and talk to peers and staff from FCPS academies and the Career and Technology Center to discover educational opportunities. All are invited to explore what it means to be college and career ready, as staff from FCPS, local colleges and universities, as well as members from our Armed Forces answer questions. Families also find opportunities to connect with community partners and receive information to promote mental, physical and emotional health.

Making an Impact

Students in Frederick County public schools benefit each year from the community’s generous financial donations through the Community Foundation of Frederick County. Grants totaling nearly $8,000 from the FCPS Gifts for Education Fund and the Franklin and Bess Gladhill Fund for Agriculture Education supported student-enrichment projects.

Six schools received grants from the Gladhill Fund for Agriculture Education to accomplish the following:

Brunswick Middle—$465 to support participation in the Stock Market Game, in which students use a variety of online resources to analyze market trends and make educated decisions about buying and selling stocks, bonds and mutual funds Butterfly Ridge Elementary—$490 for a prekindergarten Chicks Alive! project helping students to study life sciences by hatching chicks in the classroom Gov. Thomas Johnson High—$1,000 for a literacy project to expose students to classic and popular literature, extending learning to celebrate the joy of reading with interactive activities Kemptown Elementary—$500 to provide students with materials to calm and help them regulate their classroom behavior Linganore High—$500 to establish a scholarship for the best local essay submitted in response to the National English Honor Society Common Readers selections Middletown High—$495 for an interdisciplinary science and literary arts project called The Martian Middletown Middle—$500 to start a Science Olympiad team to help students improve their knowledge and interest in science and engineering Thurmont Elementary—$1,000 to implement calming corners so every classroom has a safe space for students to use yoga strategies

Centerville Elementary—$500 to create a cool-down sensory garden space for students Oakdale High—$500 for landscaping tools and to maintain an agricultural land lab that houses chickens, and flower and vegetable beds for student lessons Rock Creek School—$300 for a greenhouse growing project to supplement vocational training for students, allowing them to grow and sell plants to the school community Tuscarora Elementary—$500 for multi-sensory and calming kits for classrooms and special education teachers and interventionists Tuscarora High—$465 to prepare raised gardening beds for students to grow flowers, vegetables and herbs to use in Horticulture and Family and Consumer Science classes and share with the community Urbana High—$500 for students to compost and recycle cafeteria waste, reducing the volume of waste going to the landfill

2018-19 marked the second school year that Battelle National Biodefense Institute gave $50,000 in science, technology, engineering and math challenge grants to Frederick County Public School teachers.

“Once again FCPS teachers and students will have the opportunity to develop and submit their best STEM education ideas,” said BNBI President, Dr. George Korch. “If selected they can receive up to $5,000 to make that idea a reality.”

In 2017-18 fifteen of the grant applications came from elementary schools, five from middle schools and eight from high schools. Last year, the winning schools were Rock Creek, Thurmont Primary, Ballenger Creek, Middletown, Monocacy and Thurmont elementary schools, Ballenger Creek Middle, and Oakdale and Tuscarora high schools.

The FCPS/BNBI STEM partnership was established in 2009 with the long-term goal of getting more students interested in and better prepared to major in math, the hard sciences or engineering in college. Since its inception BNBI has directly gifted $433,000 to FCPS, and BNBI staff has committed thousands of hours of time to assisting curricula development, classroom instruction, and STEM activities outside the classroom.

Frederick County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Terry Alban accepted a generous $10,000 check from American Computer Development, Inc. (ACDi). President and CEO William Hornbaker presented the donation to mark a major milestone in the firm’s history—its 10,000th design order. The donation is targeted to support STEM—science, technology, engineering and math—programs and inspire students to pursue STEM careers.

“ACDi has a strong history of community involvement,” says Hornbaker. “This donation to FCPS’s robotics program feels like the perfect fit for who we are as a company and a celebration of our past and our future.”

ACDi’s Engineering Services Manager Garret Maxson was also on hand for the presentation: “As a result of participating in a robotics program at my high school, I chose to study engineering at the University of Maryland. It’s exciting to think that what we do day in and day out may help spark the creativity of others and launch another career in technology. We rely on community leaders like ACDi to partner with us to create opportunities for the next generation of STEM leaders.”

At every school, valuable PTA/PTSA/PTO partnerships support our mission to reach, challenge and prepare each student for success. Countywide, the PTA Council of Frederick County is a key systemic partner. We thank them for their dedication and commitment.

FCPS students benefit from the Frederick County Sheriff ’s Office School Resource Officer (SRO) program that places a deputy sheriff in each high school to assist in maintaining a safe environment. The deputies also respond to needs in the corresponding middle and elementary feeder schools. They serve as mentors and positive role models.

The Frederick County Health Department offers health services in all schools. A Health Room Technician or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides first aid treatment of accidents and illnesses, administers medications and performs selected treatments under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). In addition to supervising health room technicians and LPNs at multiple schools, RNs perform in-depth health assessments, make referrals for medical or other services, and serve as a resource to school personnel regarding health concerns. They are part of a multi-disciplinary school team whose purpose is to maximize the health and learning of each student.
