Common Core State Standards Engaging in a mathematics curriculum that supports the development of “Persevering Problem Solvers” requires a balance between exploring current topics that create intrigue and developing accurate and efficient skills. We invite you to view the video at http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_meyer_math_curriculum_makeover.html This will provide insight to some of the changes happening in the transition to the Common Core State Standards. Additional information about CCSS can also be reviewed at http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards/mathematics. As always you are welcome to contact your child’s teacher for more detail about a successful year in math.

Need Homework? - Simply email Teachers from Power School When you are going on vacation, it is the students’ responsibility to get homework in advance by using a Pre-Arranged Absence Sheet found online or in the main office.

If your child is ill and unable to make it to school, you may go into your Power School account and click on any teacher to email them if you are concerned about what they are missing. If necessary you can ask the teachers to bring homework to the office for pick up. If you do not have access to a computer you can call the main office

at 783-4561 before 9:00 AM to see if we would be able to collect homework for you on the 3rd day of the

absence. Homework would be picked up in the main office prior to 3:15 PM.

Friday, December 5th, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in the Onalaska High School Commons

Empty Bowls is a project that provides support for food banks, soup kitchens, and other organizations that help fight hunger. The Empty Bowls project is held throughout the world and millions of dollars have been raised to help fight hunger. Onalaska High School Art students have been busy making ceramic bowls to sell at this soup dinner. Each bowl will be accompanied by a recommended donation. Soups will be served in disposable bowls. The ceramic bowls will remain empty to remind us that there are always Empty Bowls in the World. Thank you so much to all of the students that have donated their time by making the bowls and helping

with this worthy cause.

Per Board Policy 1240 Public Responsibilities, the non-school related community activities/programs that have been approved for distribution will be posted on the District Website.

This approval does not mean that the events are school sponsored, nor do we necessarily endorse the activity.

http://www.onalaska.k12.wi.us/district/approvedact.html

On the district home page, under Parents and Students, select Activities by Outside Agencies to see a list of upcoming events. By clicking on the event, parents see a flyer/brochure that provides more information about the event and who to contact with questions.

We are once again teaming up with Dr. Hulse in Onalaska to help “give kids a smile”. The ADA (American Dental Association) is presenting their Give Kids A Smile program to provide free dental care in local communities to children. The La Crosse District Dental Society is partnering with local school districts to identify children who could benefit from a free dental screening and treatment. Children are eligible for this dental care if they are:

• School age children (5-17 yrs of age)

• Eligible for the school free lunch program

• Are not receiving regular check-ups from a local family dentist or pediatric dentist

A FREE SCREENING EXAMINATION (includes x-rays) will take place on FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 2015 FROM 3-6 PM, first floor of the Allied Health Center, 1300 Badger St., La Crosse, WI. At that time they will assign the child to a participating dentist in the area. The child will then be seen on FRIDAY, FEBURARY 6, 2015 for their FREE DENTAL TREATMENT. A parent or guardian must accompany the child on both of these visits. PLEASE CALL JULIE AT 608-779-5760 (EXT. 8012) TO SCHEDULE A TIME FOR YOUR EXAM. REALITY: There is a great

Dear District Parents/Guardians, On severe weather mornings, prior to making a decision to close school or keep it open, I contact:

• the National Weather Service at NOAA.gov to check on the duration of the storm, the snow fall prediction, the wind

chill, etc.

• Ready Bus Company owner, Tom Ready, to discuss the road conditions

• other area school superintendents to see what they are planning and why.

Depending on how much lead time we have to watch severe weather develop, I sometimes talk to the City of Onalaska engineer the day before the storm to gauge what the City is planning and to discuss the time the road crews will start plowing. The final decision to close school or to have it remain open is made by 5:00 am. On days we close school, I contact the local television and radio stations shortly after 5:00 am so they can broadcast the decision. If it is after 6:00 am and the media has yet to post a school closing for Onalaska, chances are very good that school is on for the day. Even though I have contact with the areas superintendents the morning a decision is made, we don’t always agree upon the decision to stay open or close. Since Onalaska is one of the smallest school districts in the state in terms of square miles, we don’t have the bussing issues others have nor do we have the amount of extreme elevation differences other districts have. One thing I can assure you is that the decision that is made on those types of days are made with the utmost safety of all children in mind. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments at [email protected]. With regards,

Fran Finco, Superintendent

To Focus on Positive Prevention Strategies (as taken from the Drug Free Action Alliance-DFAA)

As a parent or other caring adult, when we look to prevent or change particular behaviors in children, we sometimes do

so by attempting to instill fear (scare tactics). When it comes to anti-substance use scare tactics, messages delivered

may go something like this:

“See that mock crash, if you drink and drive, you will crash and you will die.”

“Were you listening to the story that family told about their child’s drug overdose? If you take those pills, you

will end up the same way as that child.”

“Look at those awful pictures of meth users. That is what happens when people use meth.”

It is amazing that man is even alive to testify after his long and dreadful ordeal with drugs.”

The above statements are true. Drinking and driving causes death. Taking drugs, whether in pill form or otherwise,

causes overdoses. Meth users do have a distinctive appearance from long periods of heavy use. Hearing former drug

user tell his/her story of hitting rock bottom, then bouncing back in life, stirs emotions and inspires. While such tactics

certainly work to get most children’s attention, frighten them and evoke fear, the bigger question is, does it work to

prevent or change behavior?

Prevention experts say “no,” and herePrevention experts say “no,” and herePrevention experts say “no,” and herePrevention experts say “no,” and here’s why:’s why:’s why:’s why:

1. Youth are hardwired to defend against negative messaging: When the outcome doesn’t always match the

message being delivered to them, they may discount it. “My friend took those same pills to get high many times

and he’s just fine,” or “I know a girl who uses meth and she doesn’t look like those people.”

2. Young people filter information differently than adults: Most adults filter information using logic and rational

thinking. Most teens, on the other hand, are naturally driven to engage in riskier, more impulsive behavior.

Blame it partially on the adolescent brain, specifically the prefrontal cortex, which is the area of the brain

responsible for controlling impulses, exercising judgment and decision-making; it is not fully developed until a

person’s mid-twenties.

3. High-risk youth can be more attracted to risky behavior: Some youth are wired more strongly for sensation-

seeking and are more impulsive risk-takers. Present such a youth with the chance to rebel by getting drunk or

high and he/she may see it as thrill-seeking opportunity. The better approach here is to deliver a positive

message about non-use, so as not to give a child something to rebel against.

4. Strong warnings can send unintended messages: Overwhelming negative attention focused on anti-use may

unintentionally send the message to children that it is a widespread problem and everyone must be doing it.

Such misinterpretation leads to youth believing alcohol and drug use is the norm, that their peers are using, and

that peers would be accepting of their choice to use.

POSITIVE PREVENTION STRATEGIES: When it comes to preventing alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, you are

encouraged to focus efforts on teaching children what TO do, instead of what NOT to do, and reminding them regularly

that the majority of youth do not use. Research shows that parents and other caring adults can have the greatest

impact on young lives by guiding them to make positive decisions, showing them healthy ways to cope, teaching them

important resistance skills, and then giving them the opportunity to practice what they’ve learned.

Eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch?

Any student who has participated in, or has younger siblings participating in the free or reduced lunch program should reapply each year, even if he/she does not eat in the school cafeteria. Many opportunities are available to students participating in this program such as fee waivers for tests like the ACT and scholarship/grant programs. OHS counselors often inform students of these opportunities but only know who is eligible based on this program. Applications for the School District of Onalaska’s Free and Reduced Lunch Program are available in the main office. Names of students participating in this program are kept confidential.

Need to see your counselor? OHS school counselors are available for appointments with students for a variety of reasons ranging from course advising, academic concerns, career exploration, post-secondary planning and personal/social issues. To encourage

personal development and responsibility in our young people, we encourage students to initiate these contacts, however parents are welcome to call or make appointments if they have concerns. Speak with our Student Services secretaries, Mrs. Kutil or Mrs. Nelson to schedule an appointment.

Apply to College Now! Seniors are encouraged to apply early to colleges and universities, as their admissions processes are now open; regardless of the KIND of school students plan on attending. Technical college programs, especially, fill quickly on a first come first serve basis. Many colleges will use admissions applications to check for scholarship eligibility in early December. It is also advisable to plan to apply ONLINE.

Our goal is for ALL seniors going on to post-secondary education to have applications turned in and processed by Thanksgiving!

Application Process: Once a student has completed their application, he or she should: 1. Bring completed application or counselor sheet from online application to Student Services if required. 2. Include letters of recommendation, if necessary. (Most schools do NOT require letters of recommendation.) 3. Include check for application fee unless paid online (no cash please). 4. Request a transcript in person in OHS Student Services. Transcript request fee: $1.00.

Some schools ask students to request their transcript on line using Send EDU or the common application. Counselors will fill these requests. (No additional form is needed) If you need your counselor to write a full letter of recommendation, students should ask their counselor directly.

5. Give all materials directly to Mrs. Kutil in Student Services to ensure that your application is complete.

report and their test book. The score report provides students with sub scores, a composite score and most importantly an itemized list of correct answers compared to the student answers. Students should use the test book they receive back with their results to see the questions they answered correctly, and identify content they need more review for.

2 There are FREE resources located in the Student Services office, such as practice tests, which can be scored

and timed by the student. Several FREE resources are also available online at sites such as Career Locker (Wiscareers.wisc.edu) (FREE access through student account to Petersons online), ACT.org, march2success.com and knowhow2gowisconsin.org.

SPORTSMANSHIP GOALS

CONDUCT/BEHAVIOR

EXPECTATIONS

OF SPECTATORS OF ATHLETE/PARTICIPANTS

Show respect for the opposing players, coaches, spectators and support groups. Treat them as you would treat a guest in your own home. Remember that you are at a contest to support and yell for your team and to enjoy the skill and competition; not to intimidate or ridicule the other team and its fans. Remember that a ticket to a school interscholastic event is a privilege to observe the contest/event, not a license to verbally assault others and be generally obnoxious. Learn the rules of the game, so that you may understand and appreciate why certain situations take place. Refrain from taunting or making any kind of derogatory remarks to our opponents and their fans during the game. Respect the integrity and judgment of game officials. Treat them with respect, even if you disagree with their judgment. Understand that they are doing their best. Recognize and show appreciation for an outstanding play. Use only those cheers that support and uplift the teams involved. Assist cheerleaders with yells, chants, etc. Recognize the efforts of school and conference administrators for their efforts in emphasizing the benefits of educational athletics and the role of good sportsmanship to that end. Be a positive behavior role model through your own actions and by censuring those around you whose behavior is unbecoming. Always provide positive support for our team, rather than intimidating or ridiculing the other team. Treat opposing players, coaches, spectators and support groups with respect and enthusiasm. Conduct yourselves in an exemplary manner by positively supporting teams in every way possible, including content of cheers and signs. Remember you represent your school both home and away.

Accept and understand the seriousness of your responsibility, and the privilege of representing your school and community. Live up to the standard of sportsmanship established by the WIAA, school administration, and the coaching staff. Learn the rules of the game thoroughly and discuss them with parents, fans, fellow students and elementary students. This will assist both them and you in the achievement of a better understanding and appreciation of the game. Treat opponents the way you would like to be treated, as a guest or friend. Who better than yourselves can understand all the hard work and team effort that is required of your sport? Refrain from taunting, trashing talking or making any kind of derogatory remarks to our opponents during the game/contest. Refrain from intimidating behavior and drawing attention to yourself. Wish opponents good luck before the game and congratulate them in a sincere manner that you would like to be greeted following either victory or defeat. Respect the integrity and judgment of game/content officials. The officials are doing their best to help promote you and your activity. Treating them with respect, even if you disagree with their judgment, will only make a positive impression of you and your team in the eyes of the officials and all people at the event. Win with humility; lose with grace. Do both with dignity. Avoid excessive celebrating after a play or end of game/contest.
