FIVE FRIENDS EVERYONE NEEDS

Cast of Gossip Girl©Warner Bros. Television

In this world, there are the knows and the know nots. The haves and the have nots. While some may say it’s unethical or classless to befriend someone purely

for the profit, we argue that as long as both parties are aware of the

situation and have something of value to contribute, there’s nothing wrong

with such an arrangement.

There are five types of people who can make your life a lot easier, and it doesn’t hurt to have any of them on your side.

t is important that you have something deemed valuable to return when they help you out. If it is money, that’s just fine. Cash is king,

the saying goes. The general rule for anything free is to pay a fourth to half the value of the item to the person who provided it. So, if you’re friend hooked you up with basketball tickets worth $600, you should give him about $200. This may seem like just paying 30% for what would normally cost a hundred, but in reality, you are not only benefiting your friend directly, but you are also doing so to such an extent that it will be profitable to your confederate to keep giving you such deals. The result may cost you a little more upfront, but will keep the fruits of the relationship fresh for much longer. So befriend the following five and your life will be much easier and cheaper from here on out.

I

Use the concert tickets as leverage to get those airline tickets. People with real hookups in the industry can get tickets and credentials, as well as entrance to great parties and events. Many of them only have to pick up a phone to have you rubbing elbows with your favorite bands, so get out there and start your networking. These are people who like cash, but would also like a giftcard to a Mastro’s for dinner or a cool jacket from a good designer.

Record A&R/ Concert Promotion

This is a great connection to develop because it can benefit you both when you travel, as well as in your home city. Really anyone working at a hotel or for a hotel company can get you a hookup, but a member of management is the real way to go. Someone with a title can get you amazing rooms for free, or $50-$150 a night. Think a $700 room for $100 a night. These kind of things happen. With hotel rooms, especially if someone is in management, a nice gift or service returned is a better call than cash. If you can hook up a great day cruise or some concert tickets for example, give them this with $100 cash for dinner instead of a large money sum. They will sometimes be saving you thousands, so it is important to take care of these people. You can also call in a favor for some friends coming to your city that you don’t want crashing out on the couch, not to mention a room to seal the deal with that one dicult dame. Then you’ll be getting the gifts.

Hotels

There are certain people who can make life a lot easier simply by being able to pick up the phone and call in a favor. You want to be one of these people.

This is probably the most valuable connection one can develop, simply because of how much people fly and also because the people who can get the discounts are growing fewer and fewer. Those who are allowed access can get slashed employee rates and often times will end up flying for free. Imagine LA to Paris, business class for nothing. The cool thing about the airlines is if you are flying under an employee’s name (This is terminology used in the business, we don’t mean using their name to book your ticket. Not a good idea.), you carry their seniority, which often times leads to airport lounges and free drinks on the plane.

These are people you need to know. Drinks from bartenders is the perfect situation for the 25-50% tip rule. If they end up hooking up three or four drinks, let them buy you the first and

tip heavy on the rest. These guys can come in extremely handy, especially when you invite a bunch

of friends out. Often they’ll “buy a round” which can sometimes save the group fifty to a hundred dollars. Bartenders are perfect people to, once every blue moon, oer a pair of tickets you got for free or maybe some clothing samples from the warehouse, especially if you have developed a rapport with them.

The Airlines

Your Local BartenderPeople in the events/public relations field always have functions popping up that, if you make it worth their while, will have tickets waiting for you. This can come in extremely handy when you meet a girl and need an excuse to ask them out, and also for a little change of pace. These events are great ways to meet members of the opposite sex and can be good networking opportunities. Many times the people working for the PR company are allowed to bring a guest or guests to these events, and them getting your name on a guestlist is as easy as sending an email down the hall.

Events/PR

Your two or three favorite bars need to be just that. Choose the

good ones and stay there.

You may be thinking to yourself, I don’t know anyone in any of these fields. Well, this is where your work begins. You have to start networking. This means building valuable relationships that lead to other relationships. No matter how old you are, if you’re not networking, you need to start. Facebook and LinkedIn are great ways to meet people, but really you need to pound the pavement. Start asking to speak to the manger, not to complain, but to praise their business and make a connection. If you’re a waiter at a decent restaurant, give them a business card with your information written on it and let them know you’ll set up an amazing experience. You’d be surprised how far a little VIP treatment will go. People like feeling special, and getting them a significant discount or setting up a few extra, small surprises are greats way to do this. So start meeting people and develop a few valuable connections. and you’ll be surprised what you can get for free by simply picking up the phone. Because as they say in this world, it’s all about who you know.

The art was housed in a Museum unique and unlike any in the world, lauded by many as a jewel worthy of viewing only by those with a true appreciation for what these canvases hold. Why would the city deem it mandatory to move a collection of art only four miles? Never mind the blatant lack of respect for Mr. Albert C. Barnes’ wishes, intentions, and instruction; the moves made on behalf of the city and a number of other individuals seem questionable.

You can watch The Art of the Steal for free on Netflix online. If you haven’t signed up, it’s a month-free trial and only $9 a month after to access hundreds of great docs and other films instantly on your computer. This is not an ad, we at Freddie are simply endorsing Netflix as users who enjoy the product.

The most impressive collection of post-impressionist art in the world was stolen by the city of Philadelphia from the much smaller Merion, Pennsylvania and the Barnes Foundation, which is located only four miles outside the major American metropolis.

his wonderful ly-directed documentary by Don Argott explains the greatest art heist in American history.

There were no masks or bombs and the assailants didn’t all dress like the guy from Magritte’s Son of Man painting. No, this robbery was done on a much higher level and through four generations. While we, at Freddie Black, support watching certain things on the television we would like to encourage everyone to take a few days away from the Man and his little picture box, and give it back to the individual every so often. Do all the little things you have been neglecting for too long. Bury the remote, break out the exercise gear, and maybe even crack a book. You will be thankful for the rest to your eyes and mind, and will be happy you did so.

The band seemed to get initial attention for not only their indie-cool electrorock tracks that pair a spandex-loving Krauss with her literal right hand man, Derek E. Miller, but also for the storybook way in which the two met. To recap quickly, Miller was working at a diner when Krauss and her mother came in to eat. Long story short, Sleigh Bells was born. Through killer tracks like “Ril Ril”, “Infinity Guitars” and “Tell Em”, this band has broke out of Brooklyn (of course) to become just about the coolest thing going in music. So if you haven’t gotten on already, we promise we’ll save some space on the bandwagon.

When we heard Sleigh Bells were opening for LCD at this last weekend’s Hollywood Bowl show, we couldn’t have asked for a sweeter surprise.

hile we have been grooving to their tracks and trying to find a chick on the west coast

that rocks as hard or looks as hot as Alexis Krauss for a while, I guess we’re still part of the minority. We couldn’t believe how many people had no clue who Sleigh Bells are. Well, now you do…

TIPS TO GET DRINKS QUICKLY

We were in a bar last night, and saw something horrible. A young guy,

we’re sure a nice enough guy, was standing at the bar trying to keep the bartender’s attention long enough to get a drink. The horrible part comes

when we saw the same guy, about 15 minutes later, still at the bar trying to

get that same drink.

We talked to a few bartenders to find out what their process is for getting their customers drinks.

Now of course there are going to be times when luck isn’t on your side and your going to have to wait a ridiculously long time for a drink, but here are a few tips to make sure you keep those situations to a minimum.

Be careful. All these quick drinks are likely to catch up with you.

o they just start at one end of the bar and work their way down? Does a regular get served before someone they

don’t know? Do friends take precedence? Or do they just serve the loudest guy first, in an eort to get him to shut his trap? After talking to a few co-workers and fellow bartenders, we think we’ve got it down to a few key concepts.

D

This seems simple enough, but the way in which you approach the bartender and bar itself can have a lot of eect on your service and your experience for the night. Be confident and clearly state your drink. It goes the same at the door. If you’re not on any guest list, or don’t want to pay a cover at the bar, simply state your intentions with conviction and like you do it all the time. Also remember to learn every bartender and door guy’s name you can. It will payo, trust us. If you’re serious about getting in easier and possibly some free drinks remember them at all costs. Send yourself a text message right after you learn their name, and then when you’re sober the next morning, write it down somewhere and begin to make a list.

Look like you know what you’re doing

If you finally get to the point of ordering your drinks and spit out what seems like a freaky coee shop novel/order, especially if the ridiculous drinks are for three or four people, you can bet the next time a bartender has to choose between your order and your neighbors, you will be shit out of luck. Stick to the common drinks and beers. Don’t try to show how much you know about cocktails because in truth, you’re not impressing anyone. Everyone’s watched the scene in Swingers when Favreau orders his Scotch from the casino waitress. Not Good.

Keep it simple

A couple of twenties (both visible) held up and slightly in the direction of the bartender is a definite good call. Do not rub the money in their face. Simply hold it where they are sure to see it and realize that bartenders work in waves. It’s like a shark in a tank. Once they go right past your spot, they do a lap around the tank before they get to you again. So with that being said, you must take advantage of the precious second you have when they are next to you. Often times they will lean over to get your order when pouring a drink or filling a glass of beer. Even if they don’t look like they are, this is a great time to throw out single or double orders with brevity, followed directly by your twenty or forty out and there for them to grab as they walk away. Works well, but do not try this with group orders or you are sure to get a WTF look.

Taking heed of the above advice will save you quite a bit of time at the bar in the future. As we said in the introduction, there is always going to be the nights that there is a new bartender working, or the place is literally five deep, but for the most part, the advice above works. And if for some reason it doesn’t, use a flask. And don’t forget whose looking out for you. FreddieBlack, that’s who.

Cash in the hand

All night bartenders are constantly being screamed at by drunken, classless assholes trying to show their friends how much of a hot shot they are. So when a bartender is treated nicely, even complemented on how well they do their job, that is a definite plus for them. Tip well, never scream at a bartender, and always say thank you. It can take you a long way. Going back to getting everyone’s name, a bartender is a lot easier to do this with because you see them multiple times each night, where as a bouncer you only see once, unless smoking is out front. Take the time to learn their names and try to start a little conversation with them, something for them to remember you by. This will help you get drinks faster for the rest of the night, and people bartenders know always get served first the next time.

Now of course there are going to be times when luck isn’t on your side and your going to have to wait a ridiculously long time for a drink, but here are a few tips to make sure you keep those situations to a minimum.

his is the only knife you’ll need. Period. Yes, there are knifes to filet fist, there are knife’s to cut bread, and there are knifes to do

pretty much every other little thing around the kitchen, but this is the true work horse. You can do everything from fabricating meat to chopping vegetables with this thing, and as long as you keep it sharp, you’ll never find a job you can’t tackle with it. Make sure to get a sharpener and actually use it. People don’t cut themselves with sharp knifes; people cut themselves when their knives become dull and they use too much force. Choke up on the knife so your hand is rapped around the butt of the blade, with only the back of your palm resting on the handle. This will up your control.

This is a secret from the pros. No other salt is used in a real kitchen, certainly not those ionized grains you’re just as likely to find on the table at your local McDonald’s. Quality cooking is done with kosher salt, sea salt, and some more exotic rock salts. But if you can only have one, kosher is the way to go.

A pan, just like a knife, is a place where it will pay o to pay for quality. Higher quality steel and Teflon conduct heat better; meaning less cooking time, and better, crispier skins on poultry and fish. For a full set of cookware, young people should not spend more than $300 to $400 dollars. More expensive sets have advantages that only a seasoned cook will enjoy, so to learn, a less expensive alternative is fine. But if an entire set of cookware seems like overkill, and it does to many of us, then just get a great pan. You can do everything from cook your eggs, to warm up soup, to do chicken, fish, and steak, all in the same pan.

There are a few great books that can give you some solid footing in the food world, including Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything, Home Cooking with Charlie Trotter by Charlie Trotter, and of course the book that changed everything, The Joy of Cooking, although this book is a little more advanced in techniques and verbiage than most people expect. Even if you go close your eyes and randomly grab something out of the cooking section at your local bookstore, you are bound to learn something. Freddie says, “Get to it!” Your date will thank you, and us.

Few things will get more use in a kitchen, maybe only the items on this list. It is important to get a good, sturdy board, preferably made of wood. The plastic ones you see are fine, but the knife works better on wood, and wood is actually easier to clean, and carries less germs. Try to find a board with good rubber feet on it, it will help it from slipping on the counter top, which leads to cuts on your hands and arms. Not Good. If your board doesn’t have feet, take a paper towel, fold it in half, and wet it. Place it on the counter, and then put the board on the counter over the towel. This will keep it from slipping around.

You’re in it to win it. Once you’ve got the conversation going don’t back down. Keep the end result in mind, you’re attracted to this female and you would like to get her number and take her out. Stick with it. You can ask her a few questions, what her name is, where she’s from, keep it simple. It’s important to maintain eye contact during this interaction. Eye contact will help establish a deeper connection between the two of you. Keep the conversation short and sweet. Just as you’re about to go, tell her you’d like to take her out sometime and ask her for her phone number.

ear of rejection is the #1 killer when it comes to picking up girls. If you’re nervous or uncomfortable during an

encounter with a beautiful woman she’s gonna pick up on it right away. Try to stay cool. No matter how breath taking she is, don’t freak out. Keep it together. Try this: next time you see a pretty girl, approach her and say “Hi, I just wanted to tell you that I think you’re beautiful” smile and then walk away. It sounds simple but doing this several times a day can really get your confidence up and improve your chances of getting the girl you want.

Approaching a beautiful woman can be a very challenging thing at first. Just remember that like anything, it’s hard ’till it’s easy. It’s just gonna take a bit of practice, getting comfortable, and finding your own style with it. Make it a daily objective to improve yourself. As your confidence grows, talking to the women you once dreamed of being with will become a piece of cake.

Women who are considered “10’s” are beautiful inside and out. She’s nice to look at, intelligent, emotionally stable, and has a good sense of who she is. If this is what you look for in a girl you’re probably not going to meet her at the local watering hole, rave, or strip club. A good place to start looking would be self improvement classes or the gym. Hiking trails are also great places to meet these high caliber girls. Other great places to frequent are organic or health food markets. The idea here is to put yourself in places where women who take care of themselves would be. Often time it’s easier meeting women at these locations because it makes your approach seem spontaneous and; unlike attempting your pick-up at a bar, during the day while doing common activities these beauties have their guard down.

You’re gonna need to get your game together to stand a chance with the kind of girls that you want. Challenge yourself daily. Be passionate about something, whether it be your career or a hobby.

When you feel good about yourself, you project an invisible magnetic field which attracts the kind of women that you want. Taking steps everyday to better yourself will increase your sex appeal tenfold.

The important thing when using a flask is to exercise discretion. Because using a flask, especially in a bar or any other public establishment is totally illegal, it is important that you blend in, while doing a little blending of your own. The trick is to order your first drink, as usual from the bartender. Go back, empty glass in hand, tell them you had a few at the first bar you were at, and ask just for some club soda, or whatever your new chaser of choice will soon become. Then you take the glass of whatever you got from the bartender, take a few moments to drink o the top, and then turn to a corner, or bathroom stall, and add your own flavor.

A normal sized flask will carry the liquor for about four drinks,

saving you $40 to $50.The flask cost you $15, and this is only the first night. $25 into the black is not bad. But then again, as long as you’re living in the black, everything is alright.

It’s no secret that, economically, things today are as tough or tougher than in recent memory, and taking measures to save yourself your hard earned dough are more valuable than ever.

here are many reasons why responsibly carrying a flask is a very smart thing to do. Not only can you save yourself

about $40 a night, but you can also give a nice subtle middle finger to those over priced, stuy clubs that charge you twenty bucks to get through the front door.

There are tons of varieties of flasks, and it does not require a college degree to figure a convenient size for your personal carrying. Gents, throw them in your back left pocket, or the inside breast pocket of your jacket. Both of these stowaway spots provide a great place to keep them out of the way, yet still very much within reach. Ladies, the purse is probably the best angle to take with this one.

1. Say “I’m Sorry.”

There comes a time in every man’s life when an apology becomes a necessity. Maybe it’s something you’ve said, or something you’ve done, and maybe it’s something you’ve not, but a well structured apology can go far in rebuilding burnt bridges and will leave you with the upper thumb if executed correctly.

F

Take the time to let the victim know that you are going to take the necessary steps to correct the situation. An apology is nothing without action behind it. Be a man of your word and follow through on any promises made. Most importantly, do not make the same mistake twice. Even if you cannot correct or reverse the oense, do not, for the love of God, repeat it!

3. Make It Better

Letting the person hurt know that you care that you hurt them is crucial for a number of reasons. For one, often times apologies are as hollow as the people that make them and for this reason, simply stating your acknowledgement will set you apart.

2. Let The Person Know You Care

For some reason, there is no other combination of words that can do as much to save a failing situation. Well, perhaps

there are two other, but that topic is better left to another article. This phrase, and no other weak excuse for a dance around it, when it is called for, should be the first words out of your mouth starting your apology.

Following our advice, along with a well time hand-written

note or bouquet of flowers, will go a long way in winning the favor back of your would-be

foe. Live the FreddieLife, guard you apologies, and work on never having to make them!

Take a look at those old photos of Sinatra, crooning with Martin and Sammy. Never was he without a crisp pocket square and a golden pinky ring, not to mention a glass of Jack Daniels and a Lucky Strike. Or look at Johnny Depp today, a descendant of the Keith Richards school of style, his wrists perfectly layered with just the right amount of bracelets and beads to come across as unique and traveled, not homeless.

The classic wristwatch is an accessory that constantly walks the line between function and fashion. Today more than ever, one can get a great watch in almost any style at an aordable price. Leave the gigantic faces and the bright orange G Shocks for rappers and motocrossers. Stick with clean, classic styles. A simple steel chronograph with a navy or white face says confidence and that you mean business. A black or brown leather strap speaks of a sense of classic style and history. Either way, steer clear of glow in the dark hands or numbers, aseveryone has a cell phone. It important to gauge the amount of accessories on your wrists and a great way of doing this is the balance rule. If you have one on a part of one arm, the opposite must be bare. For example, a watch of your left write leaves your right exposed to air. Never a ring and a wrist accessory on the same hand unless it a wedding ring.

Cuinks constantly go in and out of style just like cus on your suit pants, but we think a clean pair of silver ball cuinks always adds a touch of sophistication. It is when people started to have martini glasses and four leaf clovers hanging o their wrists that things got sketchy. A clean white pocket square is a classic of smart style. Fold it into a square (see How To) leaving the corners to the outside. Any suit, any color, it works.

Finally shoes are one of the most important parts of the closet and filing this section with smart choices is vital. Black and brown are a must. Expect to pay about $150 or more for a decent pair of dress shoes, but get a versatile style that will allow you to use them for a variety of occasions. A nice pair of lace ups can get you from jeans to a three piece suit for three to five years if taken care of. Because of the movement of your feet, your shoes are highly visible and are guaranteed to be noticed. When it comes to casual shoes again the classics are great. Skate shoes and Jordans are great for skating and playing basketball, but do not belong in the boardroom or the hotel room. Try Rod Lavers. They hold up as well as any we’ve tried and can work with twenty dierent guy’s styles.

A pair of three hundred dollar real leather dress shoes will save you time and money in the long run, will make you feel good about yourself and others will notice. Take a quick look inside the closet of any of your female friends or relatives and you will surely stumble upon the infamous “little black dress.” After all, every girl and woman owns at least one.

here is no doubt that this age-old garment’s greatest advantages are its eternal elegance and unique utility.

But what about us? The analogy assumed by many boys and men is likely to be as follows: The little black dress is to females as the suit is to males. That is all well and good until you recognize the fact that little black dresses can be worn just about anywhere, whereas there is a definite time and place for suits. Needless to say, at some point, I came to form my own analogy: The little black dress is to females as the not-so-little black sweater is to males.

T

Since the little black dress constitutes appropriate garb at even black-tie aairs and the not-so-little black sweater does not, perhaps, my analogy could use some reworking. But I think you get the idea. At the end of the day, if a sweater for all seasons is what you are seeking, steer completely clear of patterns; argyles and stripes may be suitable for bumming around the house but are far too casual for certain social events.

A few years ago, at Banana Republic, I purchased a black v-neck sweater — a brilliant blend of eighty-five percent cotton and fifteen percent cashmere. A sweater like this is highly recommended guys, as it is extraordinarily comfortable; it can be worn on its own, over a dress shirt, or under a blazer. Furthermore, it may be tucked in or left out. For formal occasions, a tie can be added to the mix. You may dress it up or dress it down with your favorite pair of pants, and more than anything, you will be happy just knowing that black goes great with virtually anything and everything in your existing wardrobe. How about that for versatility?

As for me, I still continue to wear my Banana Republic sweater and I would be a fool not to. If you do not already own a solid black sweater, you had better get yourself one. Once you do, take it out for a night on the town. You will love the way you feel and your significant other will love the way you look.

And you know what they say. When you wear the color black,

you often appear even more slender and sophisticated than you already are. Sounds good,

right? Of course it does!

Ralph Lauren Purple Label Eau de Toilette

Someone asked us the other day which was our favorite cologne. This got us to thinking because most times an eau de toliette or cologne is best for a certain time of year. Maybe it’s fall and the leaves are changing colors. You would want something woody and rich, like a great class of scotch. If the time of year is spring or summer, most would prefer a more youthful cologne with grass, fruits and hints of the ocean. Once we really began to think and go through our collections, one rose above the rest as the

rich woods and smooth suedes”, Purple Label perfectly fits the year-round bill. It says summer in summer, and winter in winter. The cologne does an excellent job of highlighting the crispness in both, whether it be the bite of a winter night or the hiss of the ocean on a summer morning.

One of the best parts of this particular perfume, being technically an eau de toilette rather than a cologne, is that it doesn’t dominate your presence the way many more heavy-handed perfumes may. The reason for this is that an eau de toilette consists of 3 to 5 percent compound in an alcohol and water mixture while eau de cologne is five to eight. Purple Label gives just a hint, the perfect amount. The best perfume is one that isn’t obvious but rather an afterthought, something to stay in the subliminal mind of your prey long after your encounter.

Make sure to ask a few trusted members of the opposite sex their sincere opinion. Even if you absolutely love a certain perfume, if others think another may suit you better, at least give it a try. Spend the time to experiment with dierent ones and find what works best for you. Give Ralph Lauren Purple Label eau de Toilette a shot. Who knows, it may just the be one that best suits you as well.

In life, people find their favorite scent. It doesn’t have

to be expensive, it doesn’t have to be exotic, it can be

whatever you like.

FREDDIE’S FAVORITES:COLOGNE

The key to wearing cologne well is, as stated above, discretion and location. Many just spray three or four waves of the fragrance onto their bodies in a random motion, but this is for those not in the know. The best places to apply a perfume are the areas where a pulse can be taken. Your wrists, the area between your bicep and forearm, behind your ears, your neck, and the back of your knees and ankles if you’re a lady are the best spots, emitting the most heat.
