From the Principal
Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Ursula Frayne Catholic College,
END OF YEAR CELEBRATIONS AND TRANSITIONS
As the 2019 academic year draws to a close, the last few weeks of Term 4 are marked with various end of year celebra ons and transi ons.
Celebra on of Excellence ‐ Duncan Street
On Friday evening (29 November), members of our College community gathered in the Duncan Street Gymnasium for the Celebra on of Excellence Evening. This wonderful community event provided a further opportunity for the students in the Middle and Senior schools and their families to celebrate the achievements of the year as a Christ‐centred community. This intent is reflec ve of the College’s mission to empower all students in the pursuit of excellence in their life‐long faith and learning journey, whilst promo ng diversity, acceptance and inclusive prac ces. The success of the evening was due to the many months of planning invested by staff members who took on the responsi‐bility of preparing various aspects of the func on. A special vote of thanks is extended to the groups and individuals led by Pauline Bourke (Head of Middle School) for their superb organisa on and leadership of this major College event and to the staff and students who assisted with both the prepara on and the conduct of the evening.

Kindergarten Christmas Concert
On Wednesday morning the Kindergarten students, supported by the staff, hosted a combined Christmas Concert. This very innocent, energe c and joyful celebra on of the birth of Jesus was enjoyed by the large audience in a endance and was a reminder that the great feast of Christmas is fast approaching. Our young students are to be commended on the beau ful way that they shared this very special story with those in a endance. Special thanks to Celes ne Tay Fernandez, Chris ne Gibson, Louise Law, Olivia Vallis, Sharon Rossbach and Sheryl Van de Sande for the wonderful manner in which they prepared and supported our students and to the other members of staff and parent helpers who contributed to this special event. Also, thank you to Ian Johnston and Lee Barker for their assistance with the set‐up of the College Hall for this func on.
Year 2 Celebra on Liturgy
On Thursday morning Year 2 students gathered at Our Lady Help of Chris ans Church in the presence of their families and the staff who have supported them during this year. The liturgy acknowledged and celebrated the comple on of their Preparatory School journey as they prepare to make the transi on to the next phase of their schooling. Congratula ons to our wonderful students and we extend to them our best wishes as they prepare to move into Year 3 in 2020. Thank you to Father Abi for leading the liturgy; Gillian Merredew, Kylie Sammels and Jo Purdy for their organisa on and conduct of the liturgy and to the students and parents who led us through the liturgy and provided the lovely morning tea.
Celebra on Under the Stars
On Thursday evening the Junior School hosted its Celebra on Under the Stars at the Balmoral Campus. The evening was truly a wonderful community event in which we joyfully celebrated achievement in its many forms. The success of the evening was due, in large part, to the many months of work invested by the members of staff who took on the responsibility of preparing various aspects/items of the program. Such a complex undertaking relies on many people. A special vote of thanks and congratula ons is extended to Cathy Armstrong (Assistant Head of Junior School) and her organising commi ee for their overall planning and co‐ordina on of this community celebra on. Thank you to Chris an Tang for his superb work in preparing the various vocal items; Mary McGonigle for co‐ordina ng the Awards; Ian Johnston and Lee Barker for their assistance with the logis cs of the event and to Andy Dalton (Head of Junior School) and all of the staff who assisted in many and varied ways prior to and during the evening.
ADVENT ‐ FOUR WEEKS UNTIL CHRISTMAS
“It’s almost Advent; only a few weeks ll Christmas!”. Was it really a whole year since we last heard those words? Afraid so! However, it’s not all bad news because, for Chris ans everywhere, the Season of Advent affords us the opportunity to get in touch with our own spiritu‐ality, to reflect on the journey we’ve taken over the past year and to set goals for the coming year – spiritual resolu ons. The Season of Advent offers us each year an opportunity to seek God within the boundaries of our souls while living outwardly amidst the noise and ac vity of the world around us. Henri Nouwen, who died in 1997, was a worldwide speaker, a prolific writer, a college professor and a priest from Holland. His favourite leisure pursuit was going to the circus, because he was fascinated with the trapeze ar sts. Fr Nouwen was enthralled by the breath‐taking performances of a team of trapeze acrobats known as the “Flying Roudellas”, and the split‐second ming that went into the execu on of their every act.

Thank you to the many parents and extended family members who have been able to a end these important College events. I am sure that all of our students appreciate the support and encouragement from their
families who, no doubt, value their efforts and success.

FRAYNE NEWS VOLUME 30 ISSUE 37 / WEEK 8 TERM 4 / 6 DECEMBER 2019
As the Roudellas came to know Fr Nouwen, they invited him to a end their prac ce sessions. Eventually, they took him into their confidence and told him that the “Flyer” is the one who let’s go and the “Catcher” is the one who takes hold. As the Flyer swings above the crowd on the trapeze, the moment comes when he must let go. He arcs out into the air; his job is to remain as s ll as possible and to wait for the strong hands of the Catcher to pluck him from the air. The Flyer must never look up at the Catcher to make sure he is there; the Flyer must wait with absolute trust. It’s the Catcher’s job to make any last moment adjustments. The secret is, the “Flyer” does nothing, the “Catcher” does everything. The Flyer’s job is simply to put his hands out and wait, trus ngly, that the Catcher will be there. In terms of our rela onship with God, we must never doubt that God will be there to make the sensa onal catches in our life. The secret is le ng go of that “trapeze”, whatever it is that inhibits our spiritual growth, and trus ng that God will be there as our “Catcher” – always. The four weeks of Advent allow us me to ponder how Jesus came into this world in such a stunningly humble way. As we contemplate His birth in a bed of straw in a messy stable, perhaps we see our own life as being a li le messy too. Our life is o en distracted, self‐centred and some mes leaves us wishing we were be er people. But if we can slow down and refocus our a en on, we might realise that God is there, wai ng to love us even though we have so many unfulfilled good inten ons and so many unfulfilled desires about our spirituality. The bumper s cker that reads, “Be pa ent; God isn’t finished with me yet” is a reminder that, in God’s eye, we are a work in progress. Our faith is not a vaccine that prevents bad things from happening to good people. Rather, our faith is the new seed that brings forth new life and hope out of a life that contains struggle, difficulty, conflict and maybe misunderstanding. Chris ans, during Advent, are like the shepherds from the Bethlehem hills; we are called from our everyday ac vi es to allow God to re‐enter our lives, even when we are feeling least “religious” or “ready” for His coming, for His arrival within us.
CONGRATULATIONS Well done to Luca Misiun (Year 5), who was represen ng WA at the Na onal Championships with his Hip Hop dance team where they placed 4th. Congratula ons Luca! With regards and best wishes, Mr Geoff Mills Principal

Chaplain’s Reflection
ADVENT: SETTING UP THE CHRISTMAS CRIB
We have begun the season of Advent which comes with a very important message: “Christmas is coming, Christ is coming”. This can sound a bit like old news since Christmas decora ons have been around for a long me already in shops and stores. It is possible that we can get so involved in preparing all the para‐phernalia that we forget the most important thing of Christmas, Christ in our life! So, Stay Awake!
Pope Francis invites us this year to relive the history of what took place in Bethlehem by se ng up Christ‐mas cribs together with the whole family: “I wish to encourage the beau ful family tradi on of preparing the Na vity scene in the days before Christmas, but also the custom of se ng it up in the workplace, in schools, hospitals, prisons and town squares. It is my hope that this custom will never be lost and that, wherever it has fallen into disuse, it can be rediscovered and revived. From the me of its Franciscan origins the Na vity scene has invited us to ‘feel’ and ‘touch’ the poverty that God’s son took upon himself in the incarna on. Jesus was born in poverty and led a simple life in order to teach us to recognise what is essen al and to act accordingly. When we place the infant Jesus in the manger, the Na vity scene suddenly comes alive. God appears as a child, for us to take into our arms. Standing before the Christmas crib, we are reminded of the me when we were children eagerly wai ng to set it up."
