Many would say there’s a price to living in Paradise and while some Wakatipu locals are happy to pay a premium, others are desperate for some real competition in grocery prices.

There’s no lack of will by the major discount supermarket chains to enter one of New Zealand’s two fastest growing districts, but the food war that locals are hoping will bring them cheaper prices is instead being fought in the courts.

5 Mile developer Tony Gapes says legal challenges delayed his proposed new $130 million, 4200sqm Frankton Countdown supermarket consent for several years.

It will now be completed by early 2015, after site works began on October 24.

“The positive thing about Countdown is that unlike New World they have a national pricing policy so you pay the same for a can of beans in Auckland

as you will in Queenstown,” Mr Gapes says.

“Grocery prices in Queenstown are currently very high and competition from Countdown should make these a lot more competitive.”Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust Executive Officer Julie Scott says the trust compared some Queenstown goods prices with other New Zealand main centres last year and found Queenstown prices to be “significantly higher across the board”.

“Basic electricity and gas was on average 32% higher in Queenstown than Auckland and Christchurch. This supports anecdotal evidence we hear from newcomers to Queenstown.”

Even a loaf of white bread was 20 percent dearer in Queenstown than Christchurch.

However, Foodstuffs South Island General Manager Retail Alan Malcolmson says shelf prices for canned and packaged goods are the same at the New World supermarket in Frankton as New Worlds in Christchurch, Nelson or Invercargill.

The long-held excuse that freight costs bump Queenstown prices up only applies to produce like fruit and vegetables. Mr Malcolmson is unable to estimate how much this adds to Queenstown grocery prices. Pak ‘n’ Save has “overall lower prices” than New World, because it deals in larger volumes.

General Manager Property and Retail Development Roger Davidson says Foodstuffs’ plans for the long-awaited Pak ‘n’ Save supermarket at Frankton are proceeding to the Court

of Appeal, after a High Court decision was overturned. He is adamant there has been no owner/operator named for the new Pak ‘n’ Save, but says that selection will be made internally from “within the Foodstuffs brand”.

on the coverArrowtown Mum, Emma Pickard:“Bring on the new Pak ‘n’ Save and Countdown, absolutely, yes. I know people from Cromwell, who would definitely travel over to Frankton to shop at a Countdown or Pak ‘n’ Save. Everything’s dearer here, meat especially. It’s getting harder to buy meat, even things like mince and sausages are dearer at New World. I keep it pretty tight. Cheese is now a bit of a luxury and it never used to be.”

Mother of seven, Emily Manulea:“Pak ‘n’ Save and Countdown would definitely force New World to offer cheaper prices. I reckon the New World prices in Invercargill are different to here...things like canned fish and, I think, different meats. My grocery bill is “$350 plus” a week, not much of that is meat. I make curries and lots of stir fries.”

WHAT THE PEOPLE THINK

Visiting ex-pat Mark Crawford, from Chicago:“Groceries seem dearer in Queenstown than the rest of New Zealand. I’m really surprised at the high price of dairy products in New Zealand. With all our cows you’d think it’d be cheaper.”

Former Queenstown Lakes District councillor and caterer John Mann:“I like competition, it’s healthy and it keeps us honest. I shop at both Countdown and New World in Auckland and I haven’t noticed a huge difference in price between there and Queenstown.”

Mother of six Debbie Swain-Rewi (22 years in Queenstown): I’ve learned to be an expert specials buyer. I would probably go to Pak n’ Save if it was here. I’ve learned to buy smarter and run a good pantry and freezer. In my fruit bowl you get what’s on special - the same with veges. You need to be imaginative.”

October 2013

Welcome to the October Round-up , looking at results from September in our local market.

Property sale volumes for September have settled at similar levels to last month. This is down on previous activity during the year and could be a consolidation of the market while buyers and banks get better understanding of the change in LVR criteria. Sales varied from $110,000 for a central Queenstown studio apartment to $2,450,000 for a lifestyle property. The majority of demand was between $350,000 and $500,000 from owner occupiers. There were several section sales below $200,000. Builders are experiencing good demand and the region needs around 300 new properties a year to cater for the population growth.

We are seeing a good volume of listings which should follow through to increased sales activity during summer. September 2013 recorded 39 dwelling sales which is at similar levels to last month and September 2012. There were 14 section sales in September 2013 slightly up on the previous year. The combined value of dwellings plus section sales for September 2013 was $27,997,877 down ap-proximately 12 % on last year reflecting greater activity at the lower end of the market. Median sale price of dwellings at $500,000 is down on last year but up on last month. This reflects the fluctuations from low sales volume. The chart below shows sales volumes through to August 2013.

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH

The skin around your eyes is different and much more delicate than the rest of your face. Therefore it needs a gentle and delicate hydrator that is specifically designed for the eye area. It’s never too early to start using an anti aging product, don’t wait for those fine lines and crow’s feet to appear!

Opt for O Cosmedics Eye Correct or O’s Pure Age Defiance Serum.

Spring is a time of new beginnings as flowers bloom, seeds sprout and the sun begins to warm the earth. There is a renewal of spirit and regeneration of life which is the ideal time to cleanse and rejuvenate our overall health and well being. But do we nurture enough inner space in our life for spring to really blossom?

Traditionally we spend a lot of time physically cleaning out the clutter in our houses, filling up boxes to take to the Salvation Army and getting at those gaps down the side of the fridge that the broom never manages to reach.

This “clearing out the old” certainly does make “room for the new” but just how deeply do we attend to spring cleaning our selves from the inside out ; honouring our feelings, clearing out thoughts, old beliefs and stories that no longer serve us?

This more soulful spring cleansing can help us to recharge as we welcome new changes that help us let go, grow and “go with the flow” of life.

Tuning in to our feelings - Emotions are a natural energy that flow freely through our body and mind then dissipate once we have fully experienced them and assimilated their valuable message.

As we were growing up however many of us learned that certain emotions- such as anger, sadness, or even joy – were unacceptable, and we subconsciously began to push them out of awareness. Overtime we may have

accumulated a large amount of emotional clutter or toxicity that takes a toll on our mental and physical health.

Mind body Doctor, Deepak Chopra, has the following to say about “feelings” “Feelings are so named because we feel them in our bodies. Your mind may be an expert at hiding from itself and denying feelings, but the body can’t fool itself. It has no access to denial. When your body registers an emotion, there is an accompanying physical sensation. Every feeling has an important message, and when we let ourselves feel them and flow through us rather than shoving them away, we can begin to experience greater emotional wellbeing.

Antidotes to emotional clutter• Acknowledge feelings & make peace with your feelings• Be open and accepting of your feelings and not just the “nice “ ones then you won’t have to repress anything • Try taking a couple of deep breaths and mentally move towards really experiencing the sensation in your body, even if it feels uncomfortable. This is the quickest way to release the feeling for “what we resist, persists”. • Begin to cultivate sympathy for yourself and replace self judgment and criticism with compassion and self love.

Spring Clean the LiverIn Taoist Yoga the liver represents the wood element and it resonates with the spring season, a wonderful time to cleanse. The liver is responsible for the smooth flow of energy throughout the body at springtime. When the liver functions smoothly, physical and emotional activity

throughout the body also runs smoothly. The positive emotions associated with the liver are: kindness and generosity so, for optimum health this spring, move your energy by doing something that you love. Anger, frustration, irritability, hay fever, itching and digestive difficulties are all signs that our liver is stressed and our energy is not flowing smoothly.

How to Spring Clean your liver:

• Stay hydrated -drink plenty of fresh filtered water

• Consume bitter herbs and foods

• Avoid refined sugar

• Avoid caffeine including chocolate

• Avoid alcohol and other stimulating drug

• Avoid chilli and garlic as they stimulate liver fire

• Avoid food additives of any kind

• Replace vegetable oils with olive oil, coconut oil etc.

• Avoid deep fried foods

Create space, let go and feel abundant this SPRING

RIPPON FESTIVAL - WANAKA 2014 01 FEBRUARY 2014, STARTS 11AM

It¹s the people who attend this event that make it the most sought-after festival of the summer. They bring an openness, and an energy that truly electrifies the amphitheatre. As this event has a tendency to sell out well

before the festival date and only comes around once every two years, we recommend a buy now-panic later approach!
