“ Fire from Within”

This image was taken at the club’s recent “Model and Fire” shoot at Frankston Beach. It was shot with my Olympus EM1-MKII, 12-100mm f/4 Pro lens. Settings for this shot were 1/250, f/5.6, 23mm, ISO 640, Auto white balance, no flash. I used Lightroom Classic CC for my edits. I did some general image adjustments to get the overall feel I wanted. Then I used adjustment brushes to darken any residual ambient light in outer areas. Then lighten the Fire Breather and enhance the light and shadows on the sand. My tips for this kind of image would be that I shot this hand held, so I could easily get in the right spot quickly, and be lower to the ground for a more dramatic angle. The fast shutter speed meant I didn’t need a tripod, it would freeze the action and mostly drop out any other ambient light so that all the attention is on the performer.

As we close on another year we can reflect on the progress of

the club.We have had a busy year with

many interesting presentations, outdoor activities and studio nights, all very successful and

enabling members to engage with other members and continue to improve their camera skills.

The committee has worked together very well and the Day and Advanced groups continue to expand the clubs ability to engage with members in photographic activities.

Brendan has led several weekend events and we thank him for his perseverance with these outdoor activities.

Steve Strauss has supported the club strongly with his techinical expertise ensuring that each night goes smoothly.

Bob Hayter continues to improve the WebSite and ensure that we have one of the best information sites of any club.

Likewise committee members have supported the club through the roles of Secretary, Treasurer and Competitions, we owe a lot to the volunteers who make our club so successful.

Whilst we have enjoyed a good year we are now faced with some change going ahead, we vacate the High Street Centre at the end of December and take up new rooms at the Frankston Ebdale Hub, 20 Ebdale Street Frankston from 15th January.

These new rooms are good and located in a large community cen-tre, car parking is available on site and in Ebdale Street.

In January we will distribute maps and entry directions to Ebdale

Photo of Mt Everest and the Himalayas taken last week when I was trekking in Nepal.ISO 200 , 22mm, F11, 1/80sec Taken from a light aircraft whilst flying over the Everest Himalayan RangeAt approx. 7.30am in the morning. Everest is 8848 mts high and many of the other mountains shown in the photoare well over 700o mts high. By Bob Date

The Phillip Island three day getaway was, I believe, a great success. We had a participation of about

twenty, although for various reasons not all were there for the whole time. The weather was beautiful for the first couple of days, but probably more suit-able for walking along the beach than photography - colourful sunsets and sunrises do not happen with clear blue skies. This in no way detracted from members enjoyment. Late Monday afternoon saw quite heavy cloud roll in but this pretty well gave a flat light with little colour, but the walk to the Pin-nacles was well worth while. None of us ventured down to the rocks at the bottom. It really is quite steep but would be well worthwhile and the place to get the “money” shot, even in ordinary light. On Tuesday most of us wandered around Churchill Island. The old building have all been well restored and there is a good walk around the Island. Some of the Moonah trees on this wall are over 300years old and have great character. We all met up at the RSL Club for lunch and afterwards the rain came in. A few of us ventured along to The Nobbies later in the afternoon, and whereas the sky was quite dramatic, the wind was blowing a gale and the rain was driving in.

It was good to catch up with Life Member Gary Parnell, now a resident of Phillip Island and of course everyone else who participated.

We will look to repeating this event next year and may look at organising it over a weekend (say Saturday to Tuesday) so that those members who work weekdays can attend.

Once again, thanks to all those who attended and assisted (in particular Debbie, Jan and Rod, our Phillip Island residents) in making this a success.

The next meeting of the Day Group will bi on at 11:00 AM on the 19th December at the Frankston RSL This is our planning meeting so have think about the next year and bring some ideas along. After the meeting we will stay on for lunch and some Christmas cheer. All are welcome, but please let me know if you are attending by the 17th December.

Membership Fees 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019

The Frankston Photographic Club has held membership fees at the current levels for the last three years. With increasing rent costs and maintenance of equipment required to ensure we can provide the best service to members there will be a slight increase in fees for the coming year. MEMBERSHIP FEES 2018/2019 1 General Full membership $65 2 Discounted Pension rate.

Note: this is only available for a full or disability pension on production of pension card and number. Seniors Card only is not eligible.

$55

3 Family membership $110 or $55 per family member, 2 per Family

4 Junior rate, 16 and under $30 In addition to the general rates members are requested to contribute $2 each night when attending the club meetings, this assists us in covering our insurance and rent costs. It is also mandatory that all members attending club meetings sign the attendance book as a record of occupancy required under our insurance and rental agreements with the building owners. Overall our club fees are low compared to other organisations, we are one of the few clubs that meets every week plus we also run courses on weekends and an Advanced Group, the Day Group is largely self-supporting through their attendance charge however regardless of attendance we still pay rental and additional costs for that group. Maintaining the club’s equipment, the printing service and ensuring that we are focused on providing the best conditions for our members is a priority. Your membership fees enable us, to continue to do that. Peter Kewley AFIAP, FAPS President
