    Recreation Department Policies

    All programs are offered on a first come, first serve basis. Franklin Recreation reserves the right to cancel or

    consolidate any program that does not meet the minimum participant registration numbers. Remember nothingterminates a program faster than waiting until the last minute to register. Avoid disappointment and register promptly.Programs will be cancelled should the program not meet the minimum participant requirements.Participants ResponsibilityWe ask all participants to respect the staff, volunteers, coaches, other participants, age requirements, and theequipment we use. Additional rules will be announced at each program. If a participant fails to cooperate with therules, the Director reserves the right to dismiss or suspend a participant in any program without a refund or feesreturned.Franklin Recreation is not a day care, after-school care program or babysitting service. Please read and understand thepolicies. If they are unclear to you, please ask questions. All participants must pre-register and sign a waiver for ALLprograms. The program coordinator on duty is solely responsible for the activities taking place. Children should not be

    eft unattended in the building or at the fields at any time. Please be on time dropping off and picking up children from

    their programs. Failure to do so will result in additional cost, penalties or suspension from programming.RegistrationRegistrations will be accepted until the program is full or 1 week prior to the start date. In some cases, registrationwill be accepted up to the start of the program. You may register for a program at the Old Town Hall, 150 EmmonsStreet, Monday-Friday. We now accept mail in registration by printing a copy of our waiver form, and sending acheck with the registrants information. All Franklin and Medway residents will be given first opportunity to sign up for aprogram. If a particular program. sells out quickly, non-residents may not be allowed to register. Included on our websiten the Program Registration area is the mail in registration forms which can be U.S. mailed into our office.Course ConfirmationNo confirmations are sent out!!!!! Please understand that it is your responsibility to know the date, time, and location

    of any program. A participant is registered only when payment is received, unless the department notifies youotherwise. We will only notify you if there are any problems or changes.

    Weather CancellationsWhen the Franklin School Department cancels school because of emergencies or weather conditions, all RecreationDepartment programming will be cancelled for the entire day. If a storm develops later in the day, please call theRecreation Departments weather line, 520-4909 ext. 2, or visit our website athttp://franklinma.virtualtownhall.net/Pages/FranklinMA_Recreation/indexSwitching ProgramsIf space allows and you wish to switch to another program, we will be happy to transfer you to that program. However,receipt numbers and participant information must be presented in person at the Recreation office.

    Special NeedsChildren and adults with special needs are encouraged to participate in recreation programs. Staff members are

    sensitive to your needs and will do everything possible to assist you. If you are interested in participating in a programbut are not sure about the facility, transportation, or wish to discuss program details, please call the Director ofRecreation and ADA Coordinator, Ryan Jette, to ask about specifics. The Town of Franklin is working toward bringingall facilities into compliance with ADA guidelines. For a copy of our ADA Self Evaluation and Transition Plan, pleasesee Ryan Jette (Director of Recreation & ADA Coordinator).Inability to PayIt is the policy of the Recreation Department that no resident of the Town shall be refused participation in a program,or the use of facilities because of inability to pay. Confidential applications can be made to the Director of Recreation,and if a hardship exists, the applicant may be granted a reduction in fee at the discretion of the Director. Please contact

    This introductory babysitting class allows potential sitters theopportunity to learn about the business of babysitting. After 6hours of training, you will receive a certification card and be pon our Call-A-Teen program list for possible babysitting jobs.Child care & wellness will be the focus with basic first aid andsafety tips from Franklin Police & Fire, and a child carespecialist. Open to kids aged 11-16 years old.

    Street hockey will be held for 2 hours at the Franklin HighSchool over February Vacation. We will organize age

    appropriate drills for the first 30 minutes and then progress ingames. We will provide all equipment including sticks, balls,goalie gear and nets. Make sure your son/daughter has awater bottle. Shin guards and helmets are not neccessary bu

    optional. If you have them, wear them.

    Join the Recreation Department for an exciting day ofPaintball adventure at Fox 4 in Upton. Players will be given a

    safety orientation and issued all needed equipment. The buswill depart from the Recreation Department at 9:00 am andwill return at 4:00 pm. What's included: Field admission,busing, rental equipment, and 500 paintballs. Please bringyour own lunch, or use the snack bar.

    Join Franklin High School baseball coach, Dave Niro, for a2.5 hour instructional baseball clinic during Februaryvacation. Coach Dave Niro will be joined by past & presentFranklin baseball players and coaches. Timed stationsinclude pitching, infield/outfield play, base running, and hittingdrills. This is a great program for children to shake off the rustof the winter and get ready for baseball season.

    Beginning Wednesday, February 1st, gardeners whomaintained a raised bed at the King Street Memorial

    Community Garden may begin to renew for the 2012 season.

    Gardeners have until Friday, March 2nd to complete therenewal application and submit payment.The season fee is$40 and is payable to The Town of Franklin. The applicationwill be processed through the Franklin RecreationDepartment, 150 Emmons Street (Old Town Hall)

    The Community Garden Committee will also open a rolling

    waiting list for the garden beginning February 1st. Available

    gardens will be offered on a first come, first served basis and

    The Recreation Department is proud to offer Introduction toRobotics. The program includes instruction in robotic basicswith demonstrations and hands on activities with real workingrobots that move about on their own, talk and perform a varie

    of tasks. Students will build & keep their own working robotwith a set of tools to maintain and change their robot.

    Try our popular group golf lessons with head golfprofessional, Mark Copithorne, at the New England Country

    Club. These progressive lessons will cover putting, chipping,bunker play, irons, and woods. Mark brings along some of histop instructors to teach kids in a group setting.

    This introductory league is designed to teach children 4-6 yearsold the fundamentals of baseball & softball in a fun, non-competitive environment. This league will get kids ready for the

    Franklin Youth Baseball Rookie league or Franklin Girls SoftballAssoc. by concentrating on hitting, base running, throwing, and

    fielding through timed stations and controlled games. Theinstructor is Mike Masseur. All players receive a team shirt andbaseball hat. Cleats and baseball pants are not required.There will be a rotating schedule on Saturdays and Tuesdaysfor all ages this year. The schedule will be posted online andalso sent to your email. Parade for all Pee Wee Baseballplayers will be held Saturday, April 21. Meet between 9:00-10:00A at Davis Thayer School.

    Boys & girls, grades 3-8 can join our Sunday SpringBasketball League. This spring league will play half indoohalf outdoor games. League Coordinator Jim Edgehill will

    place the players on a team, and four teams will beestablished in each division. Games are played atRemington Jefferson indoor/outdoor courts. During

    inclement weather, both games will be played indoor. Thisa fun league designed to keep the kids playing basketbalthroughout the spring & summer months. No GamesMemorial Day weekend.

    This experiential learning program for 3rd-8th graders combinesself esteem enhancing, uplifting warm ups and workouts thatencourage emotional, social, mental, spiritual, and physicaldevelopment. Girls will train for 8 weeks, while taking part in

    team building activities. This is not an exclusive track program,although running will be the emphasis. The instructor is JoanneLaliberte. This program will be held at Franklin High Schooltrack and fills up quickly!

    Franklin Recreation is offering an outdoor track & field programfor children ages 7-14 years old. Practices will be held at theFranklin High School Track with some meets held out of town.Transportation may be provided via bus to away Track meets.The instructors are Lauren Taranto and Mike Masseur. They will

    organize and run meets and practices. Runners of all abilities

    can participate. Runners can take part in the 4th of July RoadRace on Saturday, June 30th at 10:00 am at the TownCommon. Track & Field shirts will be provided as part of the

    ro ram. No ractice on Memorial Da Ma 31st.

    The purpose of this program is to help participants maintapositive attitude toward accomplishments, avoid injuries aENJOY THE SPORT OF RUNNING! This is a non

    competitive, set your own goals program. We will focusimportant aspects of running, such as; warm-up and cool

    down, why, how and when to stretch, proper running formpace setting, keeping a log/journal, rest and recovery, angood nutritional habits including hydration. Bring a waterbottle.

    This program is for Kindergarten-grade 5 on scheduledprofessional development half days. Each day will have a

    new and different theme. Various games, activities andevents will take place that go along with the weekly theme.Along with fun and games, children will have time to work ohomework as well.

    Think you got game? Come to the Recreation Department andprove it. The tournaments will be set up as round robin, whichlets everyone have at least 2 games. The entry fee is $10 andthe winner will receive a trophy. Food and drink can bepurchased at the event. Controllers and systems are providedbut if you would like to bring your own controller, please label itand anything else you bring. These Tournaments will run 2hours so if the tournament finishes early we will have free play.Please register before the class to allow time to set upbrackets and get the necessary equipment.

    Come join this fun and exciting class learning about dinosaurs.As beginning paleontologists we will learn about dinosaurs and

    the techniques used in extracting fossils in this hands on class.We will learn about the different types of dinosaurs, their size,where they live and what they ate. Then we will go on our ownfossil dig, analyze and assemble skeleton pieces to figure outdinosaur we discovered to reconstruct and create a mural.

    Ms. Amy brings her art classes to Franklin Recreation. It's

    time to get messy! Come and explore the many differentways to paint and draw. Your child will get an artist'seducation on how to use charcoal, paint, and othermediums. Plus make their artwork come to life by learningabout shape, texture, shading and perspective. Bring asmock or wear paint clothes!

    Children will learn telephone and door answering techniques,

    internet safety, accident and fire protection and first aidtechniques. Well also talk about how to manage your timewhen youre home alone for short periods of time. The classincludes a variety of teaching methods, including a video androle playing.

    This program is designed to be preventative and proactiveso that children can avoid being bullied, and if they arebullied, how to stop it. In an interactive, non-threateningmanner, children learn how to become Bully Proofed".Location: Franklin Recreation Department. Well focus onidentifying bullying, understanding why it occurs, acting onbullying, and cyber bullying and prevention.

    New program to our Lego Engineering series. No amount huffing and puffing will blow our buildings down!Understanding and visualizing dimension is the cornerstonof engineering, architecture, and building. In this hands-onLEGO class, students learn principles of construction and

    use math skills as we experiment with scale and size,symmetry and reflection. Most of all, we will have a lot offun.

    Knucklebones Exploration Program engages children ages

    10 months to 2.5 years of age. Playing alongside their

    parent/guardian, or child care provider, the KB staff and yourtoddler(s) explore a vast assortment of creative movementactivities. Through rolling, tumbling, pushing, pulling,spinning, and moving, toddlers will be challenged and gainconfidence. Each week KB staff will bring a mixture ofactivities to create a stimulating area of free play followed bygroup-led activities and games. From dozens of foam balls,to a floor full of tumbling mats and shapes, to push carts,scooters and mini trampolines; KB will bring a plethora ofengaging games and equipment for your child. Our staff willenhance gross and fine motor skills, hand/foot/eye

    coordination, balancing & walking, physical activity, and fun!

    Do you have a 2-3 year old who wishes they could go toschool? Let your preschooler enjoy some independence and

    socialization with peers in this preschool curriculum based,drop off class, taught by two certified teachers. Each weekwe will explore a different theme and have related activitiessuch as stories, songs, fingerplays, art activities, and games

    as well as gross motor play. This 1 1/2 hour class is a greattransitioning first step before preschool and longer drop offactivities. Snack is provided, however if your child hasallergies we ask that you provide their snack.

    Looking for some fun activities for your 1.5 to 4 year old onFridays during the winter? Free play Fridays is a play-basedclass that will allow your child to explore different obstaclecourses each week. There will be kids music and

    complementary coffee for the parents.

    Has your child already had fun in First Friends and is readyfor a little more fun time for them and free time for you? This

    2 1/2 hour class for 3-5 year olds is the same fun as MoreFun with Friends with a lunch bunch component. Send yourchild with a lunch and drink and we will supply a great time!Remember to dress comfortably for play and we may even

    Experience the largest egg hunt in the area with PeterCottontail. Peter & his friends will entertain kids with eggpainting, pictures, face painting, and a huge egg hunt. Bringyour own basket and join the fun. Bring a camera for some

    great photos. Kids will be divided into age groups. (Ages 1-9years old).

    Utilize practice time indoors during the cold winter tointroduce your child to baseball. This program is designed to

    be an introductory program for kids who are not old enoughfor Pee Wee baseball this year. The program will cover,fielding ground balls, running bases, hitting, and pitching butin a smaller group. Get your child excited about playingbaseball. This program includes timed skill stations, teework, and mini games.

    The Franklin Recreation Department in conjunction with theAmerican Red Cross has been providing quality CPR and First

    Aid training to Franklin residents for many years. Franklin Rec.is teaming up to bring CPR and First Aid training to the FranklinCommunity for ages 14 old and up. Instructor is Laura Atwood.Whether for employment, school, babysitting, or just an overallunderstanding of infant child and adult CPR; this course is thecourse for you and your family. Certifications are valid for 2years after the completion of this course. Each participant willreceive a certification card upon completion of the course.

    This program was developed by Still River Outfitters, Inc., toaddress the growing number of active adults starting familieaddition to basic paddling skills and safety considerations, w

    help parents adapt our proven strategies to comfortably padwith a toddler. This class is taught in stable recreational kaywhere the child will sit safely between the parents legs in thkayak's cockpit. This class is appropriate for parents and thechild between 1 and 5.

    Introduction to Kayak for Youths provides kids the chance tolearn exciting new skills.     hiker! Hiking trails are serene during the winter months. Freshfallen snow only adds to the magic! Plus, you can burn up to1,000 calories an hour on hilly terrain!
