Principal’s Message
Parent-teacher conferences will be held in two weeks.
The teachers will meet with every parent for 15
minutes. This is a short amount of time that should be
set aside to find out how your child is progressing.
Attending parent-teacher conferences is a
requirement of all Franklin parents. Teachers are
not able to have phone conferences. It is an
important part of our school to home communication.
Taking the time to meet with your child’s teacher will
go a long way to support and help your child.
All of the students have been working hard and
adjusting to the curriculum and new procedures in the
classrooms. This is an important time for all students
to concentrate on finishing their homework and
practicing math facts and phonograms at home. This
extra practice can make a big difference in their
performance at school. Tutoring will begin after
Parent-Teacher conferences.
The students have been working very hard on getting
their homework done and turned in each day. Please
remember that it is the responsibility of your child to
bring all of their homework home each day, complete
it within their grade level time limit, and return it to
school in the morning. Homework will be counted as
incomplete if it is not turned in by your child when
they come into class in the morning. We appreciate
parents who make a special trip to bring homework or
Spalding books to the office. It is still important to
know that it is the student’s responsibility to
remember to bring all of their homework and books to
school each day.
Thank you,

Please Help Our School
Now you can donate money to your child’s education
without spending more time or money!
These are the promotions that our school participates in behind the scenes to make money for our
students without impacting school time or having to sell anything to family and friends:
BoxTops: BoxTops are an easy way to help Franklin at Alma. There are two ways that BoxTops can help our school:
1. Many products carry the BoxTop label. If you clip these labels and send them to school with your children,
it means money for our school. These labels are worth at least a dime each, so they add up quickly. Many
schools bring in hundreds of dollars on BoxTops alone each year! You can drop BoxTops off at the office
or send them with your child.
2. There are many recipes and coupons available on the BoxTops website. You may also redeem bonus offers
on the website. You can drop BoxTops off at the office or send them with your child.
There’s more information at www.BoxTops4education.com
Labels for Education: Brands such as Goldfish crackers, Campbell products, V-8, and Dannon Yogurt, Pepperidge Farm and many
others have labels that mean money for our school too! There are over 2500 participating products. By
sending labels to school, you are helping us with resources as we teach and care for your children.
You can automatically have your labels collected if you register your frequent shopper card at
labelsforeducation.com. You will need to create a profile using your shopper card number from a participating
store. When you shop and swipe your shopper card, the school will receive points for each qualifying product.
Our school will be able to redeem the points for FREE educational merchandise.
A complete list of products and other details can be found at www.labelsforeducation.com
Fry’s Food Stores Community Rewards: Our school can benefit just by you shopping at Fry’s. You must have a Fry’s V.I.P. card, which is free, and
you must enroll every year. Sign up online and add Franklin at Alma as your choice for Community Rewards.
Visit https://www.frysfood.com/topic/community/#/new-community-rewards-program
Please share this invitation to help support our school with extended family and/or friends. All you will have
to do is swipe your V.I.P. card and the community rewards will go back to our school.

Thank you in advance for all of your efforts to support our school financially. Little things like clipping
If your child rides the bus to and from our school each day, please review the following rules with them. It is important to remember that all of the same school rules and behavior expectations of our children continue when they ride on a MPS bus.
Don’t bring prohibited items to school or on the bus. This includes toys, Pokémon cards, and all electronic devices.
By Mesa Public School Board Policy, “Inappropriate conduct at bus stops, on buses, or in the process of boarding or debarking from a bus may result in the denial of bus riding privileges.”
Obey the bus driver’s instructions Keep the aisles clear
Remain seated until your stop Keep your body parts inside the bus.
Speak quietly. No vulgar or abusive language Keep your hands off others.
Don’t throw anything inside the bus Don’t eat, chew gum, or drink on the bus

Lost and Found Check for all items that may be left at school in the multipurpose room.
Student Pick Up Changes The office must be aware of any changes to a student’s pickup or transportation schedule at the end of the day. Students will not be allowed to change their normal routine unless we have been notified ahead of time. A note to a classroom teacher or a phone call to the office (472-3905) is a must to keep your children safe. Please call by 2:30 p.m. with any changes to ensure that the child gets the message.
Bus Passes If your child plans on taking the bus home with a friend or riding a different bus or using a different stop, they will need a note from home signed by a parent. This note must be brought to the office so that the student may get a bus pass.
Items from Home Students should not bring items from home that may distract them during the day or are not allowed at school. Toys are not allowed. There is no gum allowed at school. Students will be sent to the principal for chewing or bringing gum to school.
Birthday Invitations
Student birthdays are acknowledged and celebrated at school. The class usually sings “Happy Birthday” and the teacher makes sure that students with birthdays feel special. Treats, balloons, and flowers are not allowed at school. Please save those presents for home. Please use the student directory to mail or call for birthday invitations. It is very distracting to hand out invitations at school and many students can have hurt feelings when they are not invited to the party.
Fridays are Franklin Firebird Spirit Days!
Have your child wear their Franklin Firebird shirt
or a red, white, or blue shirt.

Maureen Davies 5th Grade Teacher
We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Davies at Franklin at Alma. She came to us from the Franklin Charter School and has taught 5th grade for more than six years. She has also taught the fourth grade and developed science and social studies curriculum.
Mrs. Davies is a certified Spalding teacher, instructor, and coach. She is a valuable asset for our school. She attended college at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Maryland and later got her Masters in Education. Mrs. Davies is married and has both a grown son and daughter. She enjoys going to the movies and reading good books.
One interesting fact is that both she and her husband are from New Jersey but met in Mesa, Arizona.
She brought a little piece of the Jersey Shore to her classroom with her
Rachel Evans 2nd Grade Teacher
Miss Evans is not really a new face to Franklin at Alma. She has subbed in many of our classrooms at all grade levels during the last two years.
She is fully Spalding trained and Miss Evans is also a former Franklin student herself. Our second grade students are lucky to have the advantage of her many years of Franklin experience.
Miss Evans attended ASU and has worked at Ft. Negley, a Civil War Fort, in Nashville, Tennessee. She has also worked at the Palmyra Historical Society in upstate New York.
She enjoys traveling, cooking, reading, and history. One interesting fact that she shared is that she loves archery and has her own longbow. Her students are enjoying the super hero theme in the classroom this year.
Griselda Gutierrez - Medina Kindergarten Instructional Aide
This is Mrs. Medina’s second year at Franklin at Alma. She began here last year as a parent volunteer when her son started kindergarten. We quickly learned that she was very reliable and asked her to be a substitute aide and crossing guard. It was a natural transition for her to become our new kindergarten instructional aide when a spot became available in the spring. She does a wonderful job helping the students in Mrs. Sattari’s classroom, at lunch, and on the playground.
Mrs. Medina grew up in California and attended Ramona High School in Riverside, California. She moved to Arizona in 2009. She is a busy mother of two boys, one here in first grade at Franklin, and her older son is junior and attends Westwood High School.
Mrs. Medina enjoys running and sports. She loves spending time with her boys and having fun with her family. She is a great addition to our staff!
