Addition & Subtraction – Breaking down method
Example – Addition of 3 digit numbers 123 + 136 (100 + 20 + 3) + (100 + 30 + 6) (100 + 100) + (20 + 30) + (3 + 6) 200 + 50 + 9 259
Example – Subtraction of 3 digit numbers Take note of the + and - signs in the subtraction sum. 258 – 124 (200 + 50 + 8) - (100 + 20 + 4) (200 - 100) + (50 - 20) + (8 - 4) 100 + 30 + 4 134
Addition & Subtraction – Number line method
Example – Addition of 3 digit numbers The colour of the number in the sum corresponds to the colours on the number line. The ‘hundreds’ jump is the biggest, ‘tens’ jumps are slightly smaller and the ‘units’ jumps are the smallest.
123 + 136 = 259
Example – Subtraction of 3 digit numbers The colour of the number in the sum corresponds to the colours on the number line. The ‘hundreds’ jump is the biggest, ‘tens’ jumps are slightly smaller and the ‘units’ jumps are the smallest. The subtraction number line technique is similar to the addition number line technique, but starts on the right and counts backwards in hundreds, tens and units.
258 – 124 = 134
Now try these addition and subtraction sums on your own. Do each of these sums using the breaking down method and the
number line method.
126 + 143 = ______
235 + 154 = ______

Reading: Read the following story to someone at home.
The Bee
Bees live in a house that is called a hive. There are three kinds of bees: workers, drones, and queens. Only one queen bee can live in each
hive. If she is lost or dead, the other bees will stop their work. Bees are very wise and busy little creatures. They all join together to build cells of
wax for their honey. Each bee takes its proper place and does its own work. Some go out and gather honey from the flowers; others stay at
home and work inside the hive. The cells which they build are all of one shape and size, and no room is left between them. The cells are not
round. They have six sides. Did you ever look into a glass hive to see the bees while at work? It is pleasant to see how busy they always are.
But the drones do not work. Before winter comes, all the drones are driven from the hive so that they don’t eat the honey which they did not
gather. It is not safe for children to handle bees. Bees have a painful sting that they use in their defence.
