They show that this year, Franklin graduates were in-line with the state economy in terms of find- ing employment or transi- tioning to graduate/profes- sional school. 2009-2010 Graduate Survey Results

The results of the 2009-2010 graduate survey are in. They show that this year, Franklin graduates were in-line with the state economy in terms of find-ing employment or transi-tioning to graduate/profes-sional school.

The economy and state budget cuts in educa-tion played a large role in graduates’ job searches. This year, fewer students were employed full-time and more took part time employment in the past. The number of students

attending graduate school remains about the same. The number of students still seeking employment after eight months is higher than in the past, but with unemployment in the state hovering above nine per-cent, this does not come as a surprise.

A student intern, Ethan Leffel, is working hard to improve the “social networking presence” of career services and will be implementing more on-line tools for students and parents to take ad-vantage of in the coming months.

Senior Dis-OrientationSenior Dis-Orientation is just around the cor-ner, and seniors should consider attending this insightful program as they head into their final semester of their college career.

The program, which will take place on Saturday February 26, will kick off in the Branigin Room at 10:30am with some words from the keynote speaker, Dan James. Mr. James is a ‘78 graduate of Franklin and the Vice President of Real Estate for Arby’s Restauraut Group.

Students will then attend an employer panel, with a networking lunch to follow. Dr. Tim Garner

(‘79) will speak at the lunch during which door prizes will be given out. Students must register for the lunch prior to the event in the Career Services Office.

Programs that will be offered later in the afternoon include “Financial Planning,” “Benefits & other Hu-man Resources Issues,” “Finding Hidden Jobs: Networking into a Career,” as well as a graduate student panel.

Program speakers will include: Tom Armor of Institutional Advance-ment, Keith Moenter (‘80) and Becky Rosen-berger (‘77).

Making the Most of a Job Fair

Before the Job Fair:

• Research Employers: Review the list of employers that will be participating and research their products, services and employment needs.• Develop your résumé: visit a Career Counselor or attend a résumé writing workshop at your Career Services Office for extra help in formatting, content or just for a review.• Polish your personal presentation: Introduce yourself, look confident and initiate ahandshake with a smile!• Prepare questions: What are your expectations for new hires? What keyskills/experiences are highly desirable? What do you like about the company?

During the Job Fair:• Dress professionally: Dress as you would for an interview. The most appropriate attirewould be a dark business suit.• Break-up: If you attend the job fair with a friend, go your separate ways. Employers will want to focus their attention on individuals, not small groups of people.• Demonstrate enthusiasm: A positive attitude will pay off!• Target: Target those organizations that are of interest to you and make sure you presentthem with a résumé. Don’t avoid visiting an organization just because you haven’t heardof them.• Present yourself: Greet the employer with a firm handshake, ask pertinent questions and express your interest in opportunities within their company.• Business cards: Get a business card from every employer with whom you speak.• Network, network, network! Talk to as many employers as possible. There are hiddenopportunities for you with employers you may not have previously considered.

After the Job Fair:

• Follow-up: Follow-up in a timely manner to all the employers you met at the fair with athank-you note. Be sure to include another copy of your résumé and any otherinformation requested during your discussion.

Job fairs and career days are excellent opportunities to learn more about careers and pro-mote yourself to interested employers. However, in order to be successful and make the most of this unique experience, you must take time to properly prepare. If you don’t, you stand the chance of being “just another face in the crowd” to the prospective employers.

The following tips will help to prepare you for your visit to a job fair:
