The World Cultures Tour was a Franklin event held March 1, 2012. People from different countries came

and gave presentations on their cultures, such as India, Africa, South Korea, and many more. About 150

parents and student tourists visited the different sites. Each country had its own unique culture and

geography. That’s what made it a fun family event.

Here are few things we learned: The Colombian presenter showed an interesting video on Colombian mu-

sic. In Saudi Arabia, the people have their weekends on Thursday and Friday. Lebanon is a very ancient

country that is in the Bible 71 times. In India, they have cobras everywhere—on the streets, in houses, even in toilets! Luckily, they

rarely bite. Every year, they celebrate the cobras by feeding them milk. However a lot of snakes choke on it and die. In South

Korea, their socks are the shape of feet and people wear them in high heels.

As you can tell, our cultural ambassadors were fantastic. A special thanks goes to the following OSU presenters: Suzanne Shakiya,

Nepal; Simone Fobi, Cameroon; Panupat Poochroen and Preedanood Prempreeda, Thailand; Sonika Coomar, Switzerland; Neha

Neelwarne, India; Maralisa Morales, Colombia; Laureine El Khouey, Lebanon. Franklin parent ambassadors included: Mimi Chen,

China; Bea Michalek, Poland; Haekyoung Lee, South Korea; Fatima Alghamdi and Elham Maqsood, Saudi Arabia. Thanks also to

Jackie Barrington for teaching about Africa.

And what would a tour be without great tour guides and assistants? We greatly appreciated the eighth grade guides and student/

parent assistants. And last, but not least, thanks to Jennifer England and Isabela Mackey, co-chairs of event.

From the Desk of the Principal….

Dear parents and guardians,

Earlier this week the School District hosted an evening Kin-

dergarten information night at Linus Pauling, with general

information and break out sessions which included Franklin.

During the session Mrs. Winograd and I had the oppor-

tunity to speak to about twenty parents regarding our

school and Kindergarten program.

It was wonderful to speak to features which make our

school unique, including the Core Knowledge curriculum

and k-8 configuration. I find myself taking these compo-

nents of our school for granted at times and appreciate

opportunities such as the Kindergarten information night to

reflect on the benefits of each of these.

The Core Knowledge Curriculum, which aligns well with the

Common Core Standards recently adopted by most of the

Nation, is being implemented well in our school. This en-

sures continuity in the delivery of instruction across grade

levels as well as promotes lessons that complement what

students learn across the disciplines. I shared with the au-

dience my observation that the Core Knowledge sequence

creates an efficiency that empowers our teachers to spend

time differentiating instruction, i.e. providing extensions

and/or supports to meet students’ varying needs.

Benefits of a k-8 configuration at Franklin are evident as I

visit classrooms. In the presentation Mrs. Winograd and I

noted the close relationships that teachers and students

develop across the building. Buddy classes such as the

3rd grade/kindergarten demonstrate a consistent mentor-

ing opportunity that highlights the general respect students

develop for each other in a K-8 setting.

In addition to Mrs. Winograd and I speaking at kinder-

garten information night about these characteristics, Assis-

tant Superintendent, Kevin Bogatin, shared an observation

regarding what makes Franklin unique. He spoke to the

successful involvement of parents at Franklin which has af-

forded our school to accomplish much.

I echo Mr. Bogatin’s observation and appreciate the count-

less ways parents support their children at Franklin to

maximize their positive educational experience. This in-

volvement combined with the CK Curriculum and K-8 con-

figuration are features which make our school unique and

successful.

Feathers and Talons Feathers: Any of the light, flat appendages

forming a bird’s plumage

Talons: A claw, typically of a bird. –

Merriam-Webster

Feathers: This past week Franklin joined

schools across Oregon to honor the crucial

support which our classified staff provide. We have 14

wonderful support staff who enhance learning and our

school community by way of library/media services, in-

structional aides, custodial, office support, and food ser-

vices. Spring flowers, a banner, and postcards adorned

the office with bulletin boards across the building, deco-

rated with poems and messages of gratitude. We thank

our Franklin support staff for the high quality work they

do. Feathers: The Battle is on! Kudos to Brenda Coblentz

and all who worked with students

to prepare for the regional Battle

of the Books competition to be

held at Linus Pauling Middle

School on March 10. Teams that

win at the regional level will ad-

vance to the State competition. At

the March 10th event, Franklin

will be represented by two teams from 5th grade and 6th

grade. We look forward to highlighting Battle of the

Books in an upcoming edition of The Phoenix.

Feathers: It’s official. Franklin received confirmation

last week that Franklin Geography Bee winner, Pragyna

Naik, has qualified for the State level of the National Ge-

ography Bee. School level winners across the State par-

ticipated in a written qualifying round. We are proud to

have her represent Franklin at the end of the month and

wish her well.

Talons: A second bike theft in broad daylight in front of

the Franklin library wing does not have the happy ending

that our January bike owner experienced.

Last week a Franklin middle school bicy-

clist came to the bike rack after school to

find his bike missing and only a cut lock

remaining. Despite a report to police the

bike has not yet been recovered. Bike

racks have been moved in front of the

middle school classrooms to discourage

potential thieves.

APost-ACCESSUpdate

In January, the Franklin community enjoyed benefits of a

partnership with the Corvallis Arts’ Center to provide per-

formances at the Corvallis High School Theater. The AC-

CESS grant (Asian Culture Celebra(on for Elementary

School Students) allowed for an extension of instruc(on

dictated at 2nd, 4th, and 8th grade. Above features 6th

grade leadership students who narrated the program, 2nd

grade students performing tradi(onal Indian and Chinese

dances, and the Ribbon Dance by Ar(st in Residence, Mimi

Chen.

Beyond the January experience, middle school students

this quarter have been afforded the opportunity to par(ci-

pate in an elec(ve Chinese Culture class held twice a

week. The course includes lessons about calligraphy, Chi-

nese language, and folklore. Ar(st in Residence, Mimi

Chen, shares her exper(se with 6th-8th grade students.

The pilot course will be repeated 4th quarter.

Next fall, Franklin hopes to replicate the experience for

2nd, 4th, and 8th grade students, culmina(ng in a similar

performance in January 2013. The ACCESS commi9ee

looks forward to increasing partnerships to include addi-

(onal performers and audiences.
