Pre-Reading Activity● Before you read: With your group, look at the title,

pictures, and blurb on the back of the book.

● Discuss your predictions together, and record them in your reading notebook. They MUST be in complete sentences.

● Your predictions must be realistic and based off of the information you are reading on the book.

Chapter 1Skill: Character

Discuss with your group the type of character you think Captain Walton is. In your journal, write 5 character traits

that could be used to discuss the captain. Make sure to justify your answer using EVIDENCE from the TEXT.

Use strong character trait descriptive words like: truthful, honest, or outgoing

NOT: happy, sad, mad

1. Who is narrating the story?

2. Describe the setting. (time & place) Where are the characters?

3. What is the problem with the ship and why is Captain Walton feeling foolish?

4. Captain Walton says, “I had a crew of great men on board my ship, but they took orders from me. They were not my companions.” What does this mean? How do you

think this made the captain feel?

5. Frankenstein says to Captain Walton, “I want to tell you the whole story. I think it may help you find your own way.” What do you think this means? Would this help you?

Chapter 2Skill: Prediction

Before you began reading, you made a prediction about the book. Reread your prediction, and think about whether or

not you still agree with it. In your journal, write a new prediction based off of what you have now read.

1. Tell 2 facts about how Frankenstein’s parents met and got married.

2. Who is Elizabeth Lavenza? What does she look like, what happened to her parents, and why did she come to live with Frankenstein’s family?

3. The chapter describes Elizabeth and Victor as children. What is similar and different about the childhoods?

4. Victor says, “ Time and money mean little to me.” What was he interested in?

5. What important event happened in his life at age 15?

Chapter 3Skill: Author’s Purpose

Write a letter to the author detailing what you think her purpose was for writing this story.

moment that you didn’t want to end?

Chapter 4Skill: Point of View

Look back at the paragraphs where Victor Frankenstein meets his new professors at his university. Professor Krempe and Professor Waldman have 2

different points of view on Science. What are those?

What did Frankenstein infer when he was traveling back home?“Oh William! I exclaimed. ‘You poor, darling boy.’ As these words left my lips, i saw a

figure run away from behind the trees.” Based on this text, what would you infer happened?

3. The monster says that he will make Frankenstein’s life very unhappy if he does not listen to him. At first, Frankenstein screamed “No” and refused to listen, but then changed his mind. Why? Did he make the right decision by going with the

monster?

5. The monster says, “ I hated you Frankenstein, for bringing me into a world that would never accept me.” What does the monster mean by this statement? Why

would the world never accept him?

3. When Victor returns home from his trip, he doesn’t talk to his family. He spends time alone, and goes to bed. How do you think the family feels about his

3. On his way to the Orkney Islands, Frankenstein says, “I just knew something odd was going to happen. I just didn’t know what or when.” Have you ever had a

similar feeling? What happened?

Chapter 15 Skill: Cause and Effect

Throughout this chapter, Frankenstein struggled with the choice of bringing his new monster to life. He was debating the possible effects that the new monster could have. In your journal, use text evidence to write possible effects to if Frankenstein created the monster and the

effects that could happen if he does not.
