Frankel 134 Monteroy Road Rochester, NY 14618 Nicholas Noce Executive Director Monroe County Water Authority 475 Norris Drive Rochester, New York Re: Water Supply for Fire Services Dear Mr. Noce: I am writing regarding the fire at Steve’s Custom Canvas & Upholstery in Webster, which occurred on Sunday night, June 8, 2015. I believe the residents of Webster and Monroe County deserve a clear explanation of what happened. While it is important that the “ISO fire insurance standards are met” and the “fire protection was adequate”, statements made by Richard Metzger of your agency, the question of why the nearby fire hydrant lacked sufficient water pressure to extinguish the fire remains unanswered. If the six-inch lines in this area do not have sufficient capacity to meet the needs of an event like the one at Steve’s Custom Canvas & Upholstery, how many other structures in that area and across Monroe County are at a disadvantage, and what are the MCWA’s plans to address this concern? The public needs to know in plain terms why the hydrant in front of the building could not provide adequate water to put out the fire. Additionally, I am calling on the Monroe County Water Authority to release a comprehensive report on the current status of fire hydrants and related water lines in Monroe County, including information on when hydrants were last inspected, whether or not they are capable of providing sufficient water to combat major fires, and maintenance plans to ensure the fire safety of the community. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Sincerely, Sandra L. Frankel
