WHYFRANKE

BENEATH THE SURFACE STAINLESS STEEL SINKS CAN BE VERY DIFFERENTGauge, or thickness of the stainless steel, is also important consideration.Just as the quality of the stainless steel can vary greatly, the thicknessof the steel used also differs vastly between manufacturers. Residentialstainless steel sinks often range from 23 gauge to 16 gauge, with 16gauge being the thickest. Most Franke sinks are 18 gauge which is apopular gauge offering durability and sound dampening qualities. Whilea thinner gauge may appear the same on the surface, it can lead to excessive noise when water is running.

If quality and construction are the most overlooked factors, design is themost underappreciated in the sink selection process. Many select sinksbased simply on size or bowl configuration without considering the aesthetic differences and functionality that can be gained through finding the right stainless steel sink.

Functionality should be a key consideration when selecting a sink sinceit will be used every day for the life of your kitchen. How a sink lookscan impact how it functions. Some prefer the contemporary look ofsharp corners in a sink while others prefer rounded corners that areeasy to clean. Large cookware requires greater sink depth while raisingthe working area with an integral shelf and grid system can help youprep more ergonomically. SINGLE BOWLA single bowl sink is ideal for handling largepots. Single bowl sinks can come in a varietyof sizes, ideal for limited space or largespaces and can be used as the main sink oras a kitchen island sink. Single bowl sinkscan provide a simple yet attractive design.

DOUBLE BOWLLarger sinks provide more space and haveadditional options. These sinks offer a greatflexibility in the kitchen, such as having onebowl for washing and one for rinsing dishes,or one bowl can be used for food prep, whilethe other is used for dirty dishes.

TRIPLE BOWLA triple bowl sink is ideal for someone whoneeds to manage several sink tasks at once.It offers some flexibility, although the bowlsare sometimes much smaller.

BOWL DEPTHNormal depth usually ranges from 7-9 inches. A deeper bowl can moreeasily accommodate the use of large pots and cookware but a user’sheight should be considered. A shallower bowl might provide greatercomfort while working in and reaching to the bottom of the sink. Depthcan also be inhibited by accessories under the sink like a garbage disposal, recycling bin, etc.

CABINET SIZEThe length and depth of the cabinet, on top of which the sink will be located, are the factors that determine the maximum size of an installedsink. A new sink should have exterior length and depth dimensions several inches less than the cabinet.

WHY FRANKEFIRECLAYSINKS

Due to the nature of the fireclay manufacturing process, each sink will vary dimensionally. For this reason, no cut out templates are supplied. To ensure a proper fit between the sink and the cabinet, and any supporting framing, Franke recommends providing the cabinet maker with the actual sink to be installed.

Each sink is tested to stringent tolerance guidelines using regularlycalibrated testing equipment, which detects the actual size of thepieces, faucet hole sizes, impurities and deformations.

Quality control assures that there is no over formation, that the surfaces are smooth, with no hairline cracks and ensures correct anglesand shapes. Technological precision in the manufacturing of these sinksallows the Franke product to have thinner and sleeker walls, as opposed to the chunkier proportions in some other fireclay sink products. The desired outcome is highly dependent on an accurateand exact production process which includes the highest quality rawmaterials, water content, exposure to temperatures and handling bypeople. Franke product comes from state-of-the art production facilities.

For undermount sinks, the unglazed mounting rim is ground flat to ensure a perfect fit in the countertop. Premium finishing guaranteeseven surfaces for optimum fitting and perfect sealing and individualpieces are ground with rotating disks in a wet polishing operation to assure a perfectly leveled installation surface. The sink is then carefully packed to prevent damage during transport.

THE CERAMICPLUS®/FRANKE PLUS ADVANTAGEFranke fireclay sinks have a high quality finish so that water flows off,leaving practically no residue whatsoever, for optimum hygiene. The finish is known as Ceramicplus for all Franke by Villeroy & Boch andFranke Plus for our other fireclay sinks. These finishes are not just a surface application, but rather a post-firing treatment in the productionprocess which provides our sinks with an incredibly smooth surface.This discourages particles of dirt from adhering to the sink so they aresimply rinsed away. If any dirt does happen to remain behind, it's not aproblem because the finish also makes the sinks much easier to clean.Only a standard all-purpose cleaner and kitchen sponge with a soft orrough surface are needed for regular cleaning. Scouring powder shouldbe avoided as this may adversely affect the surface.

FRANKE FIRECLAY SINKS ARE ALL HANDCRAFTED

Many Franke fireclay sinks are created by the respected and world-renowned firm of Villeroy & Boch, which has been making fineceramic creations for over 260 years. Still a family-owned business,Villeroy & Boch has served as Royal and Imperial Porcelains Manufacturer for royalty and aristocrats for centuries, as well as becoming popular with the present-day consumers due to the qualityof their beautiful and distinctive designs.

HOW FIRECLAY IS MADEFireclay begins with a liquid ceramic mixture called ‘Slip’, which iscomprised of quartz, china clay or ball clay (kaolinite) and chamotte (a ceramic raw material consisting of silica and alumina) which is injected into porous plaster molds at high pressure. Much attention is paid to the quality of the raw materials and the purity of all components is strictly controlled. The cleanliness of the machinery andtools is crucial to the outcome, as well as controlling of the levels ofhumidity and consistency of the temperatures during the process.

The sink is then fired for 20 hours in a tunnel kiln at 2,200 degreesFahrenheit before the craftsman makes the last of numerous inspections as the sink is completed.

At each stage of production, after de-molding, after drying and afterglazing, the product is assessed for visual damages and imperfectionson the surfaces before being handed over to the next phase of production.

COMPONENT TESTINGEven the best components must be thoroughly tested to ensure consistent quality and adherence to environmental regulations.Franke faucets undergo a rigorous three-week testing sequence tomeet the National Sanitation Foundation 61(NSF61) regulation,which limits contaminants in drinking water, applies to kitchenfaucets, lavatory faucets and drinking water dispensers. By meetingthis standard, Franke is allowed to display the NSF Mark on theproduct signifying NSF Certification. All Franke faucets are manufactured under the supervision and testing of local and international standard maximum allowable levels established inANSI/NSF Standard 61. If all contaminant levels of the productmeet the requirements of the Standard, the product can be certified.Only then is the manufacturer allowed to display the NSF Mark onthe product signifying NSF Certification.

MANUFACTURING Outstanding design and quality components come together beautifully duringthe Franke manufacturing process. Our facilities use state-of-the-artprocesses and equipment while following strict environmental protectionguidelines as part of our corporate philosophy regarding sustainability and theenvironment. Strict adherence to Franke manufacturing standards in forming,finishing and final assembly achieve the exceptional quality and durability thatmakes a Franke faucet one of the most desired additions to a kitchen.

FORMINGEvery faucet is made up of many individual components. The main componentsof Franke faucets are the body, spouts and spray heads. All components areconstructed of low lead brass, or in limited instances of stainless steel, providing improved endurance, durability and superior resistance to corrosionover plastics and zinc alloys that many of our competitors use.

The initial shaping of the components is done through one or more of the following processes: a permanent mold casting process, a hot forgingprocess, or a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling process. The manufacturing process is selected based on the requirements for each component. After initial shaping, the faucet components are precisely machined and ground into the final required size and dimensions.

FINISHINGAfter machining, most faucet parts will undergo a final finishing process comprised of one or more of the following:

Plating – Depending on the desired color and finish, precise coatings of electroplated metals are applied through specialized chemical baths that contain specific additives to improve the performance and durability of thefinish and control the exact color of the parts.

Coating – Some parts require additional coatings after plating, or as an alternative to plating, for the desired appearance, color or performance characteristics of the parts. Epoxy powder coating allows for complex colorsand living finishes like Franke’s Old World Bronze; it also is much thicker,more evenly distributed and more durable than conventional liquid coatings.Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating uses highly specialized equipment to deposit thin films of vaporized materials onto the faucet parts for an almostindestructible, corrosion and abrasion resistant finish.

POLISHING & BUFFING – Most external Franke faucet components receivepolishing or buffing to achieve the final finish. Depending on the selected finish and the complexity of the parts, a combination of manual and automated polishing processes is employed to attain the final Franke finish.

FINAL ASSEMBLYAfter all individual components are fully assembled into the finished Frankefaucet, final clean up and testing is required. All Franke faucets are water andpressure tested after assembly to ensure 100% quality is achieved. Beforepackaging, all faucets undergo an additional final inspection to ensure eachfaucet meets Franke’s exacting standards.

WHY FRANKEFILTRATION

Water filtration is a popular topic these days. Research indicates that approximately 70% of American households use some type of home water filtration. But why? It’s a very common question with a simple answer: peace of mind. You and your loved ones drinkand come in contact with tap water many times every day. This is something that mostpeople don’t even consider and Franke thinks it should stay that way. A water filtrationsystem is a straightforward, convenient way to make sure that there’s just H2O in yourglass and no unexpected little “extras.” Whether the goal is to achieve better tastingwater from the tap or ease your uncertainty about actual water quality, opting to use a filtration system can provide some much needed reassurance.

POU FILTRATION

Our filtration products fall into a category known as Point-of-Use orPOU filtration systems. What this means is that water is being filteredimmediately before it is dispensed, or just before it flows from thetap. A filter housing containing a filter cartridge is plumbed directlyinto the water line below your kitchen counter. Filtered water is thendispensed as it is needed from a separate faucet adjacent to thekitchen sink. These faucets are commonly referred to as both POUfaucets or dispensing heads.

Inside the filter canister is a filter cartridge. Franke filter cartridgesconsist of a ceramic outer shell and an enclosed activated carbonblock core. Each cartridge utilizes a multistage filtration processwhich occurs as follows:

Stage 1 – Microfiltration occurs as water passes through the ceramicshell of the filter cartridge. Particulate and pathogenic cysts rangingfrom .5 to .8 microns in size are removed during this stage.

Stage 2 – The composition of the ceramic matrix inhibits microbiological growth.

Stage 3 – An activated carbon block core removes organic compoundssuch as chlorine and other organic compounds thereby improving thetaste, odor, and safety of the water.

Stage 4 – All cartridge models also contain heavy metal removal mediafor the removal of lead and other heavy metals.

Combining these elements creates an extremely effective mechanicalfiltration and chemical reduction process. Although the life of a filtercartridge can vary depending on water quality, each cartridge is generally good for six months for a family of four with normal usage,often even longer.

BENEFITS OF FILTRATIONThe fact is that there are, indeed, undesirable things finding their way intodrinking water. Water with chemicals andimpurities can have an unpleasant odoror taste making it difficult to enjoy. Ingesting water with specific contaminantscan even cause serious health issues.The table above shows some of the mostcommon contaminants found in drinkingwater in the United States and the results you can expect from the use of a Franke filtration system.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITSWhat a Franke filtration system takes out of the water might be themost important, but not the only, benefit. Our filtration systems areeasy to maintain and require no electricity or additional power supply.Unlike a reverse osmosis (RO) system, we won’t waste three gallonsof your water for each gallon that is purified and our filters won’t stripyour water of essential minerals. Most Franke system componentsare long-life reusable elements made of natural and recyclable materials. In fact, if your municipality issues a “boil water advisory”due to cysts (Cryptosporidium, Giardia, etc.) you can continue usingwater filtered with your Franke filtration system without any boiling orextra preparation.

QUALITY & ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITYAll Franke filtration products are manufactured using high-qualitycomponents and precise assembly techniques. Unlike other water filtration companies, we don’t cut corners. One example of our commitment to quality is that the activated carbon cores of our filtersare manufactured with coconut shell carbon, one of the most expensivetypes. But coconut shell carbon happens to be a highly effective substance for chemical reduction and therefore, increases the overallperformance of our systems. Despite the additional cost of some system components, Franke filtration systems are still priced equivalently or below those of the competition. Performance isn’t theonly thing we take into consideration; giving our customers the bestvalue possible is just old fashioned good business.

Our products incorporate both naturally biodegradable and highly recyclable materials. All filter housings are manufactured with eitherstainless steel or engineering grade plastic polymers. These materialsare frequently and easily recycled. Franke filter cartridges are madeof, by weight, approximately 95% naturally biodegradable materials.These environmentally responsible material usage principles are instark contrast to many filtration systems that utilize “throw away”parts and replacement cartridges. Franke consistently considers theenvironment during the development of every new product to ensureminimal environmental impact during use.
