Lord’s Day July 31, 2016 8:15 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Cover Symbol No. 5 - XP

Explanation of the Cover Symbol The Chi Rho symbol is one of the most ancient Christian symbols. XP, the first two letters of the Greek “Christ”, is an abbreviation of the name of the Lord. This symbol is often, as here, accompanied with other symbols, in this case “Alpha” and “Omega,” the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. The symbol originates from Revelation 22:13: “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (cf. Revelation 1:8, 17; 21:6). This particular symbol dates from the first few centuries of the Christian era and is often found on tombs. Prelude All Creatures of our God and King………………………………………………Francis of Assisi/Tune: Lasst uns Erfreuen

Welcome and Announcements +Silent Prayer Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting. But the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love. Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion! – from Psalm 147 (ESV) Call to Worship *Hymn of Praise to God “Holy God, We Praise Your Name” No. 103 (Te Deum) +Confession of Sin Silent Prayer Corporate Prayer

Holy Father, we come before you with humble hearts, confessing our sins. We have chased after the vanities of this world and have wandered from our heart’s true home; and, forgetful of you, the living God, we have burned the incense of the soul before false gods that cannot deliver. Deal not with us as we deserve, but pardon our foolish and perverse ways. Of your clemency wash us clean from all sin, for no adversity shall harm us if no wickedness has dominion over us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. [The

Leonine Sacramentary (c.6th

/7th

cent.)]

Assurance of Pardon Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. Psalm 32:1-2 (ESV) *Confession of Faith Q. But doesn’t this teaching make people indifferent and wicked? A. No. It is impossible for those grafted into Christ by true faith not to produce fruits of gratitude. Q. We have been delivered from our misery by God’s grace alone through Christ and not because we have earned it: why then must we still do good? A. To be sure, Christ has redeemed us by his blood. But we do good because Christ by his Spirit is also renewing us to be like himself, so that in all our living we may show that we are thankful to God for all he has done for us, and so that he may be praised through us. And we do good so that we may be assured of our faith by its fruits, and so that by our godly living our neighbors may be won over to Christ. Heidelberg Catechism No. 64 & 86 *Hymn of Faith in Jesus Christ “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing” Worship of God with Tithes and Offerings

O Lord of heaven, and earth, and sea, To thee all praise and glory be; How shall we show our love to thee, Giver of all? For souls redeemed, for sins forgiven, For means of grace and hopes of heaven, Father, what can to thee be given, Who givest all? We lose what on ourselves we spend, We have as treasure without end Whatever, Lord, to thee we lend, Who givest all. To thee, from whom we all derive Our life, our gifts, our power to give: O may we ever with thee live, Giver of all! Amen.

*Congregational Petitions and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Matthew 6:9-13 (KJV)

Scripture Lesson Acts 18:18-28 (ESV pp. 927-928) Sermon “Christians at Work” The Lord’s Supper The general order of communion will be back to front, with the balcony coming first. As the minister begins to serve those distributing the elements, that is your signal to come forward. However, individuals may commune at any time during the distribution of the elements. Wine will be found in the outside tray, grape juice in the inside tray. If you need to be served in your pew, please notify an elder or deacon. Gluten free bread is available upon request. You are welcome to participate in the Lord’s Supper if you are a baptized Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, and a faithful member or adherent of this or some other congregation, recognized as belonging to the fellowship of Christian believers. If this does not describe you, we are glad you are here and commend to you this prayer for your use during the time of the Lord’s Supper. Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

On Thee each living soul awaits; From Thee, O Lord, all seek their food; Thou openest Thy hand, And fillest all with good. Thou sendest forth Thy breath again, And life with vigour fresh returns; Revived the earth unfolds new strength and new delights.

Josef Haydn from "The Creation"

Hymn “Take My Life, and Let It Be” No. 586 Reading of Scripture Romans 16:1-16 (ESV p. 950) *Hymn “Jesus, Master, Whose I Am” No.590 *Benediction +Silent Prayer Almighty and most merciful Father, grant us a heart to love you; And enable us to show our thankfulness by giving up ourselves to your service; And delighting in all things to do your will; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jesus, lover of my soul, Let me to thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, While the tempest still is high. Hide me, O my Savior, hide,

Till the storm of life is past; Safe into the haven guide; O receive my soul at last. Fairest Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature, O thou of God and man the Son, Thee will I cherish, thee will I honor, Thou, my soul’s glory, joy and crown. Plenteous grace with thee is found, Grace to cover all my sin; Let the healing streams abound, Make me and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art, Freely, let me take of thee; Spring thou up within my heart; Rise to all eternity. Glory and honor, praise, adoration, Now and forevermore be thine.
