Welcome again.

You are staring to in this edition, a slightly different looking Franchise Buyer magazine. In an effort to continue to respond to feedback and requests on certain features, we are slightly ‘tweaking’ our layout to make it even more reader friendly for you.

Of special significance this month, we look at the very recently released Franchising Australia 2014 report. The release of the report is keenly awaited every two years, as it acts as somewhat of a benchmark into what has been happening in the sector through a wide range of metrics.

We also look at:• Ex-Eagle Boys Founder Tom Potter and

his ‘move’ into Burger’s• Peter Buckingham’s look into marketing

areas for franchises• Five principles of franchising for success• Hundreds of classifieds for sale and more

Cover Story

Franchising Is in better shape today than in 2012Franchising Australia 2014 is a detailed, comprehensive report on the status of Australia’s franchising sector.

As part of the National Franchise convention 2014 held at Sydney Olympic Park, the Asia-Pacific centre for Franchising Excellence (APcFE) of Griffith University, the region’s

leader in independent franchise research and tailored teaching and learning, has released Franchising Australia 2014, the ninth biennial franchising survey sponsored by the Franchise council of Australia (FcA), a not-for-profit association for franchisors, franchisees and suppliers.

The survey was conducted electronically from July to September 2014, with the primary purpose “to obtain current information about the practices and performance of the Australian franchise sector, including market trends.” Data on franchisor profiles (age, size, growth and composition), market predictions, participation of minority groups, online sales and international expansion were covered. The survey was administered on identified franchisors from an extensive search of Griffith University’s updated database as well as existing databases (including that of the FcA) found on the Internet and published directories. All franchisors were personally contacted to confirm their status; franchisors were deleted from the database if they ceased operating or were no longer involved in franchising.

During the last 2 years, there was no net growth in the number of franchise systems but a net decrease of 1.7%, with 1180 franchisors in 2012 declining to 1160

in 2014. However, as the franchising sector matures, a decline in the number of franchise systems is expected whilst the number of individual franchise units increases in size, which is a positive sign of maturity and health of the sector. There were 79,000 business format franchise units in operation in

Cover Story

2014 (70,000 franchised and 9000 company owned), representing almost 4% of Australian businesses and a net increase of 8.2% (6000 franchise units) since 2012.

Franchise brands predominantly dealt with non-food retail trade (27%), accommodation and food services (18%) and administration and support services (15%). Majority of franchisors that commenced franchising in 2012 dealt with retailing, whereas majority of those that either ceased franchising or operating in 2012 dealt with services.

Franchisors reported 21 years of operation and 14 years of franchising experience. Two thirds had been franchising for more than 10 years. Franchising commenced after 3 years since operation. One third opened their pilot outlet after only 12 months of operation.

Both retail and non-retail franchise systems grew from 2013 to 2014. Forty percent of franchise systems

had more than 50 units, whereas one third had less than 20 units. Small franchise systems were younger, but large ones were more mature.

The total sales turnover of the entire sector increased from $131 billion in 2012 to $144 billion in 2014. The current figure was $65 billion from business format franchisors combined with $38 billion from motor vehicle sales and $41 billion from fuel retail (the last two data were not reported because of the unique characteristics of these industries). For retail franchises, the reported sales turnover was $25.8 million in 2013 and $33 million in 2014; for non-retail franchises, these numbers were $3.2 million in 2013 and $3.3 million in 2014.

A 9% increase in franchisor revenue in 2013-2014 was recorded, and 10% is predicted for 2015. Improved franchisee performance (39%), strategic direction (39%), market positioning and demand (30%) and new products or services (26%) were cited as top reasons for increase in the past 12 months. A 7% increase in franchisor profit in 2013-2014 was recorded, and 10.5% is predicted for 2015.

The number of permanent full-time and part-time employees grew compared to 2012, although the distribution of labor in these categories remained the same. The number of employees in casual labor increased to 181,000 in 2014 from 138,000 in 2012. There were 461,000 people estimated to be employed directly in franchising.

Sector growth has continued to be challenged by access to franchisees. Seventy-two percent of franchisors cited the availability of suitable franchisees as the main obstacle for franchise growth. Franchisors also disclosed the other significant challenges as funding for franchisee’s initial purchase (48%), maintaining standards in system

processes (27%) and franchisee non-compliance (27%).For the first time, the survey included data on

minority groups involved in franchising. Only 16% of franchisors actively recruit migrants as franchisees, and only 12% plan to do so in the future. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander franchisees were under-represented (7%), but majority of franchisors (51%) were interested in programs that will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment and franchise ownership.

Forty-five percent of franchisors conducted online sales of their products and services, and 19% plan to do so in the future. Online sales contributed only 5% of the

total sales. In the past year, 21% of franchisors were involved in

a substantial dispute (that referred to an external advisor for action) and only 1.5% of franchisees were involved in a dispute with a franchisor. The most common cause of dispute was franchisee non-compliance.

Franchisors nominated accurate financial assessment as the most common measure of due diligence followed by environmental scanning, customer and staff audits, financial evaluation and modelling and market planning. Franchisors recommended prospective franchisees to seek legal and financial advice.

Eighty-six percent of franchises originated from Australia, and 30% operated overseas, with New Zealand still the most popular destination. Global franchisors were involved in retail, personal and professional services and education and had 49 local units before they expanded overseas.

In summary, Franchising Australia 2014 reports that the franchising sector has shown strong performance amidst fiscal restraint in the economy. retailing performed strongest across all segments. Surviving brands have continued to grow, whereas small, non-viable ones have left the sector. There was a moderate increase in total sales turnover. Both franchisors and franchisees have increased revenue and profits in the past year and have expressed confidence in the predicted growth of their brands in 2015.

For the first time, the survey included data on minority groups involved

in franchising. Only 16% of franchisors actively recruit

Located next to the Hilton Hotel, Black coffee Lyrics has a “New York meets Melbourne” contemporary ambience, oozing a unique, sophisticated aura. Its “decor” has to be seen to

be believed — a casual and comfortable atmosphere with a menu featuring organic and seasonal ingredients.

Whitehead says, “When we created this unique eatery and bar 4 years ago, my business partners and myself were determined to introduce a very different dining experience to the Australian marketplace. And we must’ve ticked the right boxes, as we’ve been asked countless times if we intend franchising the concept”. Nic explains that, although “franchising” the restaurant model is something that was considered, he and his partners have other commitments that have prompted the sale of the business. Nic is getting married and plans to concentrate on his wife’s burgeoning organic juice business, and another owner is relocating overseas.

Nic boasts that the restaurant’s menu is constantly being “spied upon” by competitive eateries — a huge compliment. He highlights, “we also have internationally

recognised cocktails, craft beers and leading Australian “tap beers”.

Its five-star all the way and has been ranked “#1 restaurant on the Gold coast” for 3 years running by Urbanspoon — the sort of “gong” every restaurant would want. Black coffee Lyrics has also won assorted awards for being in Australia’s Top Ten restaurants for coffee, food and cocktails. Enjoying a prime “centre of Surfers Paradise” location, the restaurant is near the landmark tourist strip and has a tram station right outside its doors.

Nic adds, “We believe this is an incredible opportunity for an entrepreneur to further exploit this winning formula into a possible franchise model — as all the hard yards have been done in proving the concept works”. Nic also highlights, “the restaurant now has over 10,000 social media followers, meaning that we can “turn the customer tap on” whenever we want to — by simply posting “the cocktail of the day” or “the chef ’s delicacy of the day”.

To find out more details about this opportunity, go to www.blackcoffeelyricsforsale.com.au or phone Nic on 0412 561 707.

Special

dear boss,

Did you ever wonder what your franchise business would say ifit could talk to you? What do you think it would say about yourown performance, the way you run it and what you get it into?

I just want to say a few things about our time together so far and in going forward from here.I’m excited about where I think we are going, and I’m appreciative of where we have been. I

know you always try to do your best and do what you think is right. However, looking at it from my perspective, what you think is right or the way you do things may not always be the best for me.

You see, what you think is right is influenced by so many things such as your experiences, your friends and family, your peers and, worst of all, your biases. All these can and do take away your perspective on what is best for me and us — and that’s what really matters.

My worry for you and us is that you will push aside the opportunities that will help us grow together, because they are not what you are used to or that they are a little confronting or uncomfortable compared to what you think right now. Maybe, they even challenge you personally.

I know, I have seen you do this in the past when you did not give a suggestion or a piece of advice much thought or time before you knocked it back. You probably wouldn’t agree, but deep down inside you know when you have taken an “I know better approach”.

Take advice from people who have either seen it or done it themselves countless of times. We are also missing out on ways for me to grow because you work everyday but you work so hard

on doing the things you should be training and paying others to do for you. That’s why you bought me so that you can be your own boss and make great profits. I don’t like it when I see you doing things others are paid to do.

I want thriving growth and I know you do too, but you need to let go of the thinking that you always have to do everything.

You bought a network that has systems to run me. You should be running these systems, not running me!

I would feel so much better if you train the team to run me and you are mainly working on ways to make me grow even bigger and faster. You can’t do that while you are running me everyday. It’s just not possible.

Anyway, please do give this a lot of thought, as I’m here really to provide prosperity, not perspiration and worry, for you.

Let’s grow!

territory planningYou are being seduced by an enthusiastic franchisor, and you ask the question about the territory or preferred marketing area he/she is granting you.

By Peter Buckingham

Would you believe the franchisor if he says, “It will be OK. We made all the territories big enough to support you”?

creating a territory plan is a desire of most franchise systems; however, evolving into a good system can be a nightmare.

Most territory planning exercises we handle begin from the “beer and pizza” approach and, in many cases, have evolved from people’s discretion. The “beer and pizza” planning is normally when a group of managers (and some early franchisees) converges around a map on a boardroom table with beer, red wine, a couple of pizzas, a black crayon and some good ideas! Inevitably, the territory is built around where existing stores are or where dominant franchisees want to have as their exclusive territory. The downside is uneven opportunity in territories, overlaps and spaces in between, which we call no man’s land.

Business potential oF an areaAs part of the process, we should identify

what are the demographic features favourable or unfavourable to the product we are selling. This can be done by some research and analysis, or if we are new in our development, there are normally some realistic assumptions we can initially make.

If we believe that the area is favourable for our products, then we probably need less households or people around our business to generate a good business. If the demographics are unfavourable, then we will need above average numbers to make a business successful.

www.FranchiseBuyer.com.au October-November 2014 FRANCHISE BUYER 21

The “beer and pizza” map. Whilst the areas may look similar in square kilometres, the content in terms of business, numbers of people and how they suit the product being sold is normally extremely uneven.

Mapping a territoryAll these things should be taken into account in

forming the territory or preferred marketing area you will be using in the future. Once identified, we strongly recommend it to be mapped and that a master map held by the franchisor is continually updated. roads and other physical boundaries shown on a map do not move; well maybe they would in a couple of hundred years, but these are well outside the scope of a franchise agreement. If there is a move such as a new freeway, or a postcode moves its boundary, you have a clear starting point to work from.

suMMaryTerritory planning is a must for a service business,

which can normally be mapped early in its development and then remain unaltered for many years to come. If your franchisor cannot deliver you a proper map with some logic or explanation on how your territory was developed, then you must seriously ask about their competency for the future.

individual territoriesOnce the market has been mapped out (as above), you

can create individual maps for the franchise agreements for clarity in the future. The other alternative is a map supported by a list of postcodes or suburb names; however, these may change with time and may create some problems in the future.

bigger and better “Urge”Ex-Eagle Boys founder Tom Potter is Burger Urge’s new chair. In their funky and cool office in Newfarm, Glenn Walford of FrANcHISE BUYEr met with Tom and Sean carthew, the brand’s co-owner, to discuss Tom’s role as chairman and what input and guidance he is bringing to the Burger Urge business.

Gourmet burger chain, Burger Urge, is known for its highly addictive, healthy burgers served with an edgy attitude, as well as for its equally edgy, “out-of-the-box” marketing campaigns.

With only seven years of history in the quick-service food industry, Burger Urge is now fast entering a high-growth phase targeting franchise partnerships across Australia.

co-owner Sean carthew shares, “We [together with his brother Colby] started the business in 2007. We have been in operation for seven years. We now have seven sites on the ground plus three more under construction. We plan to double that number before 2015. We’ll have 10 stores by christmas.”

With this high-speed franchising progress, Tom Potter, one of Australia’s top business leaders and the original founder/ex-cEO of Eagle Boys Pizza chain, joins Burger Urge as its chairman of the Advisory Board. In 1987, Tom founded Eagle Boys with only one store; today, Eagle Boys has more than 250 stores throughout Australia and New Zealand.

The carthew brothers first met with Tom for mentoring six years ago during the infancy phase of the company while establishing their market and undergoing essential product development. According to Tom, “Burger Urge is a very good and well-accepted product in

a fastest-moving sector. During its start-up, Burger Urge is a little bit similar to Eagle Boys.”

As Tom joins the carthew brothers to help achieve Burger Urge’s ambitious plans of super-expansion, Tom’s role basically involves “monthly board meetings, advertising strategies, policies and decisions. When a problem comes up, and the boys need something, they can come to me. What’s interesting is that the brand is evolving. Burger Urge is moving up to the airports and more universities. The brand actually has interesting opportunities coming up.”

Five principles of Franchising

RedundancyBusiness 101

There are basic principles you can apply to prosper in any franchise business no matter the category.By Glenn Walford

remember, the franchise business model is based on a ‘formula’ for success, which is based on the success of the preceding businesses in your brand. So don’t mess with it, and don’t push back

against it. You can try applying the five principles below to your business.

decide exactly what you want to achieve, open up your mind to all possibilities and have a basic plan written.1

• Be very specific on what you want to achieve. Don’t just drift from day to day.

• Create your goal statement — what you want from your business on monetary and lifestyle terms. Make it down to the dollar, the hour, the activity.

• Write your goals, because writing it down is the big

2open up your mind to new ways of thinking about your business.

• Be very aware that the impact of your past experiences will prevent you from allowing new concepts and changes to come in — these are the ‘biases’.

• Adopt the ‘dominant thought principle’. Put your mind to work as it always gets what it really, really wants.

• Filter out and discount suggestions to improve your business based on your ‘programming’ through past experiences. Take care here not to miss something great.

factor between making your goals happen and not making them happen.

• See yourself vividly achieving all your goals. Dream big!• Make the plan basic. Make it a single-page plan with

enough details for what needs to happen when and by whom. Long plans don’t get opened.

Business 101

become insatiable in the marketing of your business.

• Be relentless in your efforts to market your business. Look for angles and opportunities everywhere you go.

• Become a student of marketing from everyday life by looking at what everyone else is doing. Leverage by piggybacking or ‘modeling’ what others are doing.

• Be known for something that is appreciated by your customers aside from the basic offer you provide. Make the experience with you more special, memorable and surprising.

• Make marketing your focus, not the making or working in your business. The money is in the marketing.

become an expert in leveraging the system of your franchisor and adopt ‘the system runs the business, not you’ attitude.

• Learn the system inside out.• Implement the system in its entirety in your business.• Squeeze everything you can (fairly and reasonably) into

your system.• Find out what’s on, and what’s not, such as extra training,

product trials, marketing activities and extra store visits and inputs.

• Utilize absolutely everything you can. You would be surprised at how much is left on the table in the way of resources by franchise owners.

If I had a sixth principle, it would to be ‘Become an action taker’. Even if an action is wrong, it is still action, and you have the momentum to quickly swing back, change it and start a new course with that momentum.

Strive to thrive!

‘become an action taker’.3 Connect and engage in deep collaboration as close as you can with your franchisor.

• First and foremost, take the lead to pull your franchisor closer to you and tag them along on the ride you are taking to grow your business.

• Connect — Make all forms of contact with your franchisor about what you are doing to grow your business and how you would love to hear their inputs.

• Engage — Involve your franchisor in your goals and plans. Let them give inputs to what you are trying to achieve.

• Deep collaboration — Act like you and your franchisor are both equally in the business together, their business and your business.

Before we enter the mysterious world of search engine optimisation (SEO), it is important to first understand the acronym SEM. SEM stands for search engine marketing.

SEM is an online marketing activity to generate traffic, prospects and leads to your website by using search engines. This includes paid traffic and free traffic from search engines.

The reason why businesses invest in SEM is that they understand that we are all connected to the Internet via our smartphones, tablets and Pcs. With these devices, we use search engines to tell us what we want.

One part of SEM is paid ads. Businesses use paid ads to gain instant page one search engine rankings. When you click on ads, search engines will charge you money per click. This is known as Pay Per click (PPc). This is how search engines make money.

However, most businesses do not want to rely on PPc ads for the rest of their lives, as it can add up and be quite expensive, so they look for “free traffic” alternatives from search engines.

Introducing (drum roll) SEO. SEO stands for “search engine optimisation”. When people use the term SEO, they are referring to the process of generating search engine traffic from “free, organic or natural” listings from search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing.

Search engines limit their free listing positions

Expert Advice

SEO: What It Is, How It Works and Why You need to Understand the basicsWe have all heard people throwing around the acronym “SEO”. Most probably know that it stands for search engine optimisation, but that is where knowledge of it ends for most. John Mu of the Franchise Marketing Agency takes a shot at simplifying this mythical beast for you.

By John Mu

to just a handful per page. All businesses want page one search engine rankings, as the higher you rank, the more traffic your websites will receive. More traffic will give you more leads and more sales. If you are on page two and beyond, you will feel like SEO does not work, as those pages receive very little traffic.

In fact, it has been recorded that up to 80% of the search engine traffic goes to websites listed in the top three organic search engine positions. Gaining top search engine rankings is an art, and it takes time and effort to compete against your rivals who too want these positions. Some business owners take the long road and try to become instant SEO experts overnight. On the other hand, some business owners like to save time and leverage the skill and expertise of online marketing companies to achieve faster online results.

If you want more traffic, leads and sales from search engines, it is imperative you contract an online marketing company to first conduct an online marketing health check. These comprehensive audits should be done at least once a year and are designed to tell you “why” your website is not ranking and “what” is required to outperform your online rivals.

John Mu is a #1 international best-selling author, speaker and online marketing expert, and is Accredited by Google. Get an online marketing health check today at www.franchisemarketingagency.com.au or call (07) 55773759.
