    Introduction

In the mid to late 1700s France had a King named Louis XVI(16 th) who ruled over the whole land. By the late 1780s he had

raised the price of bread by a lot. Many peasants wanted to fightback but didnt out of fear that he would kill them. Many people

died of starvation until one day when Frances debt, or moneythey owed, became too great a number to keep up with.

    Meeting of the Estates-General

In the late 1780s France was in a financial crisis. They were in

debt due to spending more money than they earned. The ThirdEstate, also known as the peasants, was the only estate that was

taxed and the king thought that if he taxed nobles as well theycould make more money. The nobles told him that they needed to

hold the Meeting of the Estates-General. So the King held themeeting. He had decided to vote by order which means that each

Estate would get a vote not each person.

This contributed to democracy because people had their right tospeak out.

    to vote by

    Tennis Court Oath

The Third Estate was furious with the King, so mad in fact thatthey didnt even show up to the meeting. Instead they went

through the Kings house searching every door for one that wasunlocked. They eventually found and indoor tennis court and heldthe first meeting of the National Assembly. During this time theytook the Tennis Court Oath, which was basically a pledge thatthey would not go against each other. It took them nearly two

years to write their own government which they called theConstitution of 1791.

This contributed to Democracy because people were finallycreating their own government.

    We will create our

    own government

    Storming of the Bastille

July 14, 1789, nearly two years before the Constitution of 1791was complete the people of France retaliated like no one had

seen before. The King had some of his men circling around thetown and the people were feeling uneasy. There were rumors thatthere was gunpowder in the Bastille which was a huge prison for

political figures. This marked the true start of the FrenchRevolution. The peasants tore through the Bastille tearing peoplelimb from limb. They took guards heads and stuck them on sticks

parading them through the streets shouting and cheering.

This contributed to democracy because in democracy majorityrules and this is a prime example of the majority of people ruling.
