Dear FHS Families, How quickly the first semester went by! We recently had our Semester II student assemblies to discuss academic stamina, achievement, expectations and respect. Special thanks to our faculty and staff who presented pertinent information to our students. Class Officers presented on upcoming events including fundraisers, Senior Prom, and Junior Cotillion. Many of our Seniors have applied Early Action, Early Decision, and Rolling admissions at a number of prestigious colleges and universities. Information on where are students are applying is on page 24. We have over 50 students taking Early College High School classes at Massachusetts Bay Community College and Framingham State University. We are pleased to offer the Framingham State University class Effective Communication at Framingham High School for the first time. This course is on Tuesday and Thursday immediately afterschool and is dismissed before the late bus. Summer Session I Framingham State University courses will be offered at FHS beginning mid-May. These college courses are offered at no cost to the student and students earn 4 college credits upon successful completion of the class. Students who are underrepresented in college admissions or who will be the first in their family to attend college are strongly encouraged to participate. Accessibility to Early College and Dual Enrollment college courses is part of our 2017-2020 School Improvement Plan. Dr. David Gotthelf, Ph.D. NCSP presented to the FHS Faculty and Staff on anxiety and school performance. The presentation covered strategies that educators can use to support students in managing the demands of school and understanding the impact anxiety has on academic progress. This presentation was sponsored by Middlesex Partnerships for Youth. The Framingham High School Foundation received a very generous donation of $50,000 from Middlesex Savings Bank. These funds will be used to support extra-curricular activities, arts, and athletics at FHS. Please read the full press release on page 23. It has been a busy month in the Social Studies department. We have been working on standardizing our curriculum maps, using understanding by design to standardize our unit plans, and finalizing common exams. We have also been enjoying teaching the Constitution, Great Depression, and Imperialism in our classrooms! We have managed to do all this while still taking our students on an array of field

trips. Check out the photo below from Boston House of Blues:

Health and Physical Education

The Health and Physical Education Department has been busy doing a variety of professional development. During the November 7th Professional Development day, Stacey Freda, Ed Mantie, and Emily Viti attended the annual MAHPERD Conference. Lara Gibson, Krysta Ottaviani (Peplowski), and Michele Merrick participated in a discussion about trauma-informed yoga practices, and other folks learned about best practices for archery. Julie Williams attended a conference, as a part of the 5-year grant, “Promoting Adolescent Health and School Success” through DESE and the CDC about Parent Engagement. Additionally, continuing with the district initiative for HPE, peer observations are on-going. Lisa Cronin and Michele Merrick visited elementary and middle school health and PE classes on November 21st, Ed Mantie visited middle school PE classes on December 12th. Mike Foley will be visiting classes on January 10th, Stacey Freda and Lara Gibson on January 30th.

Winter HPE highlighted course is: Dance Fitness. This course, taught primarily by Krysta Ottaviani (Peplowski) instructs basic dance moves for 8 ballroom dances. Throughout the course, students also learn fitness dances. By the end of the course, students choreograph and teach their own fitness dance! A department favorite ballroom dance is the tango.

World Languages, Cont. El Día de los Muertos

This fall the Spanish classes studied El Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead). El Día de los Muertos occurs on November 1st and 2nd each year in Mexico. Families celebrate their loved ones who have died by creating altars in their homes and decorating with candles, photos, or special dishes that their relatives loved. See the pictures of the various altars that were constructed.

English We are pleased to have Mr. Antonellis joining the English Department, replacing Mr. Menna who resigned to become an assistant principal at Medway Middle School. Mr. Antonellis is a Framingham native and earned his teaching license through Framingham State. In the Fall he covered for Ms. Lovett during her maternity leave.

Three, full-time student teachers will be working in the English Dept. during Semester 2. Mr. Diamond from Brandeis University will be working with Mr. Eliot, Ms. Fischer, and Mr. Antonellis. Ms. Kalesnick from Framingham State will be working with Mr. Pimentel. Ms. Ehrlich from Wellesley College will be working with Mr. Chancey.

Congratulations to Sarah Sagan (Class of 2018) who represented FHS in the 2017-2018 Massachusetts Lions Club Youth Speech Competition after winning a preliminary contest in Mr. Compton’s Public Speaking class.

The FHS Writing Center has continued to see an increase in usage with a record-breaking 2,473 student visits logged during Term 2. During Semester 1 English Teachers volunteered a total of 77 hours after school for the 289 students who accessed The Writing Center after school.

Bilingual/ESL For Bilingual/ESL at FHS and throughout the district the past month has been all ACCESS all the time. Students have been taking on line tests in each of the four domains: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The month long marathon of testing ends in the first week of February, just in time for the MCAS science retest! On December 6th, a group of Bilingual/ESL students attended a Celtics game as guests of TD Bank. The invitation to be part of the TD Bank Clubhouse came through the efforts of Vinicius De Souza, a former FHS student who is now a manager at TD Bank. In order to select 16 students from the nearly 300 in the program, the department ran a contest. Students were invited to communicate the reasons why they should be chosen to participate. Students at every level submitted entries in the form of essays and power point presentations. Eli Driscoll chaperoned the select group to Boston Garden to watch the Celtics beat the Mavericks 97-90.

Special Education

Thanks to a DESE grant for transition planning, the special education department has been able to open the Fleagle Market. This is a "school store" where students can purchase pens, pencils, paper, poster board and other school supplies during lunch and study hall periods. It is run by students and they are learning valuable vo-cational skills such as keeping an inventory and using a cash register. The store is self sustaining as all of the money collected goes back into buying more supplies. It is currently a cart, but we anticipate that the store will grow in the future.

P A G E 1 2

It’s been a very busy winter in the Resiliency for Life Program. Our students made a great collective push to raise their grades as high as they could prior to the end of Term 2 and it was great to see such large numbers of students staying after school and working hard, even on days when there was no late bus.

On Wednesday January 18th Junior Joey Fintonis and Sophomores Aleah Tavares and Cameron Bassett visited with Senior Biologist Michael Phipps in his office and lab at Sanofi-Genzyme corporation. They got to hear the sort of work that Mike and his team do each day that includes manipulating the genetic code in animals so that they can investigate and hopefully find treatments for a variety of genetic disorders and diseases. The three students asked great questions and even discussed some of the research they had done about Genzyme prior to meeting with Mike.

On Friday January 19th half of the Resiliency seniors had lunch with Ms. Greenberg, Mr. Goldschmidt and graduate Zyrah Campos. They discussed all the issues that are making them feel anxious about the transition from FHS to college. Zyra is a freshman at MassBay Community College and is very excited about being in their Paramedic Program. She talked enthusiastically about getting into good habits, the challenges of paying for college and seeing her peers who are choosing to stay out late partying rather than taking school seriously. She also felt as though Framingham High School prepared her very well for college.

On Monday January 22nd twenty five students from the Resiliency Program took a field trip to go ice skating at Chase Arena in Natick, then to Terra Brasilis Restaurant in Framingham for lunch. After eating the students and chaperones attended an information session and tour at the MassBay Community College campus in Framingham. They learned about the difference between an associate’s degree and certificate programs and discussed the Mass Transfer program. The students really enjoyed the tour because they got to perform CPR on some of the mannequins in the lab for the EMT/Paramedic Program students and also got to see and learn about the labs for Nursing, XRAY Technology and other health fields. The mannequins in one lab can even talk, give birth or have heart attacks or seizures. One of the Resiliency seniors even commented that this experience may have changed her mind about what program she might like to pursue next year.

The Resiliency for Life Program, thanks hard work and lobbying by State Senator Karen Spilka, State Representative Chris Walsh and Superintendent Dr. Tremblay, was recently awarded an earmark by the state for a very significant amount of money. One of the initiatives this will fund is for a stipend for a person from the College Preparation Center at Framingham State and MassBay to sit with individual seniors and research scholarship opportunities. The person will interview each senior and his or her parents and will then spend time researching scholarships for which the student qualifies. This could mean literally THOUSANDS of dollars to help make college a more affordable reality for our students, many of whom will be the first generation in their families to attend. This new

The Class of 2018 is hard at work fundraising and planning for Prom on May 18th! We will have a couple of upcoming benefits as well as the hypnotist show and annual raffle, both in March. We have had great turnout at our

Steering meetings and hope to see that continue!

Many of our Seniors have received acceptances through Early Action, Early Decision, and Rolling admissions at a number of prestigious colleges and

universities. Information on these early acceptances are on page 24.

Greeting from the Class of 2021...

Please encourage your freshmen students to become active members of the class. We have steering meeting on January 30th. As an upcoming fundraiser we are having a bake sale on February 12th, 13th, and 14th. Please consider purchasing a reusable Flyers bag and short sleeve class shirts. The class is also giving back to the Framingham Community through a volunteer opportunity. On the Fourth Monday of each month, class officers from each grade give their time to The Miracle Kitchen. Please ask your Freshmen to contact Ms. Pham, Mr. Manny or any of the officers to inquire about these opportunities to help out the class.

Class of 2021

Class of 2020

We wish class advisor Mr. Menna good luck as he embarks on a new role as Assistant Principal at Medway Middle School and we welcome new class advisor, School Counselor Kaitlin Donovan! Steering Committee worked hard at creating fund-raising opportunities prior to vacation; they planned three bake sales and a used-clothing drive through Savers. All of these endeavors have been productive, and just in time as advisors and officers will begin looking at prom venues during the month of January.

The 2019 class officers and the rest of the Steering Committee continue to work on the details for the Junior Cotillion. It will take place on Saturday, May 5th, at the Framingham Sheraton. Students who are interested in helping with this effort are encouraged to attend Steering on Tuesdays after school in B211.

We are excited about the commitment students of 2019 have made to community service. The officers and Steering Committee members volunteer at the Salvation Army Miracle Kitchen whenever there is a fifth Wednesday of a month. In addition, there is room for new volunteers to par-ticipate on the fourth Monday of every month with a mix of students from different grades. We will be having our online Yankee Candle sale this spring, and we also have some new apparel in the works. We still have some fabulous blankets with the Flyer symbol that are non-class specific. If you are interested in purchasing one, please contact Stacey Wilgoren in the math department.

School Counseling Department Individual Introductory Meetings

Since October, school counselors have been inviting each Grade 9 student to a one-on-one appointment with them. Students are notified of their appointment by receiving a pass from their homeroom teacher. These "Introductory Meetings" began in October and continue through the end of January, until counselors are able to meet with each freshman individually.

The Grade 9 School Counselors; Mr. Walcek, Ms. Uricchio, Mrs. DeSimone and Ms. Khazai, have enjoyed getting to know each of their freshmen individually during these appointments.

Recap: Future Planning Information Sessions From November 1 - 9, the Grade 12 School Counseling Team; Ms. Monaco, Ms. Ramirez, Ms. Donovan, Mr. Childs, and Ms. Wong delivered Future Planning Info. Sessions to all seniors. The sessions took place during Science classes. For any senior not scheduled for a Science class, each was assigned to a small group session in the cafeteria, for which he/she received an individual pass. During the session, seniors were surveyed to determine their current progress with the college and career process. Counselors reviewed the steps needed to apply to two and four year colleges. They also provided hard copies of the following handouts:

“Student Transcript Request Process “

“How to Match Naviance & Common Application”

“Elements of the Four Year College Application Process”

Please note, all forms are available on the School Counseling Department Website, under the "Navigating the College Application Process" tab.

Re-Cap: On The Spot Admissions Events

Salem State University offered “On The Spot Admission” on-site at Framingham High School on November 21st

2017. Sixteen FHS seniors were able to take advantage of this opportunity to meet in person with a Salem State

admissions representative during the school day. Many of these seniors were able to gain acceptance “on-the-

spot!”

Framingham State will be offering “On The Spot Admission" on site at Framingham High School on Tuesday,

February 13, 2018.

School Counseling Department Recap: Future Planning Classroom Lessons

From December 11th - 19th, school counselors led juniors through a lesson on future planning during English classes. All juniors were assigned to one of the lessons, and translated sessions were run for our ESL students.

The "Future Planning" classroom lesson delved further into the overview of Naviance that each junior received during Future's Day in Grade 9 and again during advisory last year. This lesson included:

Each student accessing their personal Naviance account.

Demonstration of the college/career search tools and resources which Naviance offers.

Student exploration of the information within the Naviance database, based upon their post-secondary interests.

Student consideration of what colleges and careers may be a good fit for them. Each student was guided to research 3 colleges or careers of interest.

Each junior also received copy of their unofficial transcript, which included their cumulative Grade Point Average (based on Grades 9 & 10.)

We are pleased to share the the data collected from student post-tests tells us that as a result of the lesson:

95% of students feel comfortable using Naviance to search for colleges

95% of students feel comfortable using Naviance to search for careers

78% feel that Naviance will help them plan for life after high school

We encourage you to ask your student to show you the resources they’ve discovered in Naviance!

Scholarships for Seniors

For quick and easy student access, FHS maintains a database in Naviance which includes all scholarships of which we

have been made aware. To access the scholarship database, seniors must log into their Naviance account and click on

"Colleges" >> "Scholarship List."

Private Scholarships

Private scholarships are local or national scholarships that are open to more than just FHS students. Private scholarship

winners are selected by each scholarship’s own private committee/procedures. Each will have their own unique deadline

and application requirements.

Seniors can find private scholarship listings in Naviance (“Colleges” Top Tab >> “Scholarships”) and in the FHS College

& Career Center (rm. A110).Each time FHS receives notice of a Private Scholarship, we update the database in Navi-

ance. Seniors should check Naviance periodically for updates.

“FHS/Local Scholarships” are scholarships that are open only to FHS students and require an “FHS Scholarship Applica-

tion.” A list of all available FHS Scholarships and the corresponding application form will be available by February 1,

2018. At that date, seniors will be able to find the “FHS Scholarship Packet” in their Naviance inbox. Hard copies of the

packet will also be available in the College & Career Center (rm. A110).

To apply for an “FHS Scholarship,” seniors need only fill out one FHS Scholarship Application form and can then photo-

copy it for all scholarships requiring an FHS Application. Seniors will attach a typed, short essay for each individual

scholarship. The essay should describe how they fit the eligibility criteria for that particular scholarship and should in-

clude anything else that they would like the Scholarship Committee to consider. Completed applications must be re-

turned to the FHS College and Career Center no later than March 2, 2018 at 2:00pm.

For additional information and resources, please access the Scholarships Tab on the FHS School Counseling website.

School Counseling Department Upcoming Event: Career & Personality Exploration Lesson

From February 7th - 15th, school counselors will deliver a lesson on "Career & Personality Exploration" to all Grade 10 students via 28 classroom sessions. Each classroom lesson will last one hour. The majority of lessons will take place during History classes with translated lessons run for ESL students.

During the lesson, all Grade 10 students will log onto their personalized Naviance accounts. Naviance is the college and career planning software to which FHS subscribes, and Grade 10 students created their Naviance accounts during Advi-sory last year.

Grade 10 students will then be guided to explore their personality traits and/or careers of interest using assessment tools available through Naviance.

School Counseling Department Monthly Newsletter

Each month, the School Counseling Department issues four newsletters, one for each grade level, to share recaps of recent events, news about upcoming events, and resources for students and families.

The newsletters are available in three languages; English, Spanish and Portuguese. They’re sent out via email (to sign

up, click here) and are also posted on the FHS School Counseling Website.

Course recommendations for the Class of 2019 and 2020

During the month of February, teachers will make 2018-2019 electronic course recommendations in the major academic subjects and Advanced Placement courses. From February 26th - March 26th, students in the Class 0f 2019 and 2020 are required to make an appointment with their school counselor to review the 2018-19 course recommendations and submit their elective requests. Course recommendations and requests are managed electronically through our X2 scheduling program. Course descriptions may be found in the Program of Studies that is posted on the homepage of the high school website (www.framingham.k12.ma.us/fhs).

After meeting with their school counselor, 10th and 11th grade students will receive a parent/guardian signature page that lists your student’s course recommendations and requests for 2018-2019. Please return the parent/guardian signature page to the school counseling secretary within 2 school days acknowledging the selection of courses. If you want your student to make a change to their course requests, please have them schedule a follow up appointment with their school counselor. Otherwise, the courses will be scheduled as they appear on the signature page. Framingham High School provides an opportunity for students to request an override of a teacher recommendation for a course or course level. This process has several steps involving completion of the course override request form and conversations among the student, teacher, department head, parent/guardian and counselor. Please give careful consideration to a request for an override. It is strongly recommended that you have a conversation with the teacher, counselor, and department head if you are considering overriding a teacher’s recommendation. There are caps on the number of students that can enroll in a course and movement from one level to another is limited by the enrollment caps. Student course enrollment is a significant factor in finalizing the list of courses that will be offered in 2018-2019. The number of course sections that are scheduled are determined by course requests. Students will be required to select alternate courses in elective subjects during the course selection process. We will make every effort to accommodate your student’s elective requests but please be mindful that all electives have limited enrollment and are scheduled in descending order 12th - 9th grade. If the chosen electives cannot be accommodated, students will be enrolled in an elective that has availability or, if no elective is available, in a study hall. Please note that class schedules are created over the summer and you will receive your students’ schedule in the mail in mid-August 2018.
