Presently Oud is featured as a key
ingredient. In many mainstream luxury
branded fragrances. The oud content in
each fragrance typically ranges from 0.6
to 8%.... dependent on the strength of Oud
essence the perfumer wishes to display
within the character of the fragrance.
In addition to the fragrances listed, Oud is
also used in literally 100’s of Middle Eastern
ranges and bespoke fragrances, as a
basenote fragrance for candles, incense
sticks, soaps and more recently face and
body creams. It can also be used as a raw,
undiluted oil and applied to the body daily.

By Kilian Rose Oud was launched this year and is presented
as “the second port of call of his collection Arabian Nights”,
a Middle-East inspired collection which is scheduled to
include five different fragrances built around 5 materials and 5
accords these are strongly reminiscent of the Orient and were
selected for their high symbolic value. After Oud and Rose
we can expect to see Incense, Amber and Musk. Rose Oud
is described as “a feminine interpretation of Oud using the
luxurious petals of the Turkish Rose and the Rose of Grasse.”
The composition is further said to be both “mysterious and
familiar.” The whole Arabian-Nights concept is a reinforcement
of the Orientalist theme and genre and rides on the wave
of a recent interest in Western perfumery for Oud. Without
amounting to the level of a craze, as for violet in the 19th
century and Patchouli in the 20th century, it certainly reflects
a cultural movement which is aesthetically interested in
arabesque and conscious of new potential markets in the East.

Giorgio Armani Cuir Noir
In homage to the sensuality of this skin-on-skin sensation,
Giorgio Armani writes a new chapter in the book of
its 1,001 nights. Cuir Noir arises from this setting. A
sumptuous palace awakening from the implacable heat of
the day to the splendor of the oriental night.
The fragrance opens on a harmonious prelude of creamy
Australian Sandalwood and the accents of Rose essence.
A few hints of Coriander and Nutmeg set off
their encounter.
The fragrance heart is more textured, alternating tinges of
leather and smoky notes of Guaiac and Oud. In the base,
animal traces of Tahitian Vanilla absolute punctuate the

Giorgio Armani Oud Royal
While in ancient times, spices were the bargaining counter
around the Mediterranean shores. A number of rare and even
more precious essences subsequently took their place. In the
eastern confines of India, the strange alchemy that binds the
heart of a tree with an intruding fungus gives birth to a hard
wood with a deeply penetrating fragrance.
Placed on the embers of an incense burner, it perfumes interiors
and garments. When distilled, it delivers a golden and potently
sweet-smelling essence which, as it matures, grows darker and
thicker like a liqueur. This dark, dense oil exerts real fascination,
and in the eyes of connoisseurs these rarest of qualities are
more precious than gold. Sometimes worn on the skin, it distills
intense woody effects and is adorned with animal-like reflections,
shades of dark earth and tones of humus.
When Giorgio Armani turned his attention to Oud, he decided
to work it the way he would a heavy brocade lined with gold
and silver, leaving its weight, its noble intensity and majestic

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris
Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian was
born in Paris in 1969, to a family
of Armenian heritage. He had
his perfume epiphany when he
was 13 or 14, playing with his sister who,
as teenage girls do, had a little collection
of perfume sample bottles. “She was into
the bottles and I was into what was inside,”
he says. When Kurkdjian told his parents
he had decided he was going to make
perfumes for a living, they were greatly
relieved. “Before that,” he says, “I wanted to
be a ballet dancer.”
Trained at ISIPCA and Quest, his first big
success was with Jean Paul Gaultier’s Le
Mâle, which he developed at the age of 25.
He was the winner of the Prix François Coty
in 2001. In 2009, Francis Kurkdjian was
named Chevalier des Artes et des Lettres by
the French Ministry of Culture.
In 2009, Kurkdjian launched his own line,
Maison Francis Kurkdjian housing a unique
fragrance collection, with a rarely matched
quest for refinement and elegance. With
a commitment to quality and authentic

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud
The famous perfumer Francis Kurkdjian launches a new
fragrance within his perfume collection Maison Francis
Kurkdjian in early May 2012. The fragrance is simply
named Oud, focusing on this exquisite accord. This
oriental scented material that had been neglected for
decades has returned in a big way in recent years and
most of the niche perfumery houses have dedicated at
least one edition to it.
The aroma is rich and luxurious, representing a modern
interpretation of the ancient Arabian perfumes. Francis
Kurkdjian uses Oud from Laos; where it is the purest and
the most expensive. Oud is enriched with woody and
spicy notes of Cedar, Patchouli and Saffron.
Available early May 2012 as 70 ml Eau de Parfum.

A glamorous oriental perfume radiating with resplendent
top notes of Cassis, Kiwi Berry, Bergamot, Mango,

Juliette Has a Gun Midnight Oud
Romano Ricci conceived his opus as a European vision of
Oud that evokes the mysterious and intriguing woman, who
hides behind her veil. Midnight Oud is a love song written
for that ancient musical instrument called Oud in a palace
where the walls are Rose petals, the air breathes golden
saffron and the floor is scented with sacred Agarwood.
The heavy oriental notes of traditional Ouds are
represented here in a very wearable and refined manner.
Midnight Oud is crafted as a bridge between the perfect
balance of Rose-chypre-Patchouli and the purest Oud
perfume note. It is an imaginary black flower with glittery
saffron and soft incense notes, and the heavy Moroccan
Rose petals become a precious liquor laced with tobacco,
Amber, Agarwood and dried fruits. The resulting scent
is rich, velvety and opulent, finding the right harmony
between the dark strength of Arabian perfumes and the
modern idea of richness.

Al Jana is a natural green fragrance with notes

Al Jana was launched in 2010. The nose behind
this fragrance is Stephan Humbert Lucas.

Hajj (“Sage”), created around noble notes, reveals fresh
spices on the background of warm tones. The scent of
wisdom and spirituality, it is made of Bergamot, Candied

Thierry Mugler Miroir des Voluptés
Miroir des Voluptés starts by unveiling sweet floral notes of
Bulgarian Rose and orange blossom. The fragrance then
reveals the warm, woodsy character of Oud. In the trail, the
scent evolves towards lush, ambry tonalities, intertwining
Patchouli, Sandalwood and Musk. Perfumers: Nathalie Lorson
and Daphney Bugey, Firmenich.
A glass bottle adorned with golden arabesques on a black
background. A silvery ‘dagger’ bisects the surface of the
bottle, which is topped with an asymmetric silvery cap, like an
extension of the ‘dagger’.

Betsey Johnson Too Too
Too Too, appears to be just what you’d expect from
Ms. Johnson—playful, free-spirited, and fun. The
packaging alone screams of the wonderfully wild and
wacky designer: “It could be my tombstone and that
would say it all,”.
With top notes of Pink Musk And Passion Fruit, Black
Vanilla and Sandalwood (to name just a few), it sounds
like a fabulously sweet and sexy scent.
Plus, you have to trust its creator, who is as honest as
they come when promoting product. “I have to love
the perfume,” Johnson says, “otherwise I can’t bullshit
my way through selling it.”

UNTITLED No.8 by Brent Leonesio is a Leather fragrance
for women and men, and was launched in 2011.
The nose behind this fragrance is Brent Leonesio and it
features Musk, Narcissus, Tobacco, Civetta, Agarwood
(Oud) and Leather.

By Kilian Incense Oud
If Incense Oud lives up to the second half of its name, it
is through the interplay between the woodiness of Cedar,
Patchouli and Sandalwood and the Ambery, leathery accents
of Cistus Labdanum and Oakmoss. The incense, which
makes up 25% of the formula, reads as a dark presence, its
citrus facets magnified by Geranium, Methyl Pamplemousse
(a grapefruit-smelling material) and cardamom – the latter
perhaps a subtle quote of the cardamom coffee popular in
Arabic countries, its anisic facets combining with pink pepper
to refresh the scent. Turkish Rose oil, though highly dosed,
is seamlessly worked into the blend as a counterpoint to the
dark woody facets; a cocktail of musks permeate the scent
with their soft animalic notes. Exceptionally smooth, polished
and full-bodied, Incense Oud may just be the most darkly
sensuous interpretation of its starring notes.

Caron Secret Oud
What is it: This passionate, intense eau de parfum spray
combines Oud with Saffron, or “yellow gold,” another of the
finest essences of the East. It’s also sweetened by damask
Rose.
Who is it for: Women who appreciate a woody scent.
Why is it different: The composition is more elaborate than
traditional Ouds. The result is a complex and intricate fragrance
that is original, luxurious, and elegant.

Caron Oud
...is interesting as a study of how dark, oriental notes can play
a similar role as the classical Oakmoss bases once did. Oud
by Caron has a stronger Middle Eastern attar impression than
Secret Oud, with saffron and Amber giving it a medicinal,
leathery touch. Carnation and Rose provide a welcome spicy,
floral counterpoint to the heft of the woods, while Patchouli
lends its scintillating quality to the drydown. However, I do
not find the elements of the composition to be well-balanced,
and as a result a strong note of camphor dominates. Secret
Oud manages to rein it in, weaving it successfully into the
arrangement, but Oud by Caron becomes overpowered
by its presence. The result is a somewhat jarring blend of
Caron classical darkness and blandly rendered Rose attar
sweetness.
Creed Royal Oud
“Wood, leather marble and gold,” elements of a royal Persian palace,

Nasomatto Pardon
As smooth and suave as the 19th century dandy who appears
to be its inspiration, Nasomatto’s Pardon takes Oud’s dark
richness and nudges it — ever-so-gently, and probably while
dabbing its forehead with a monogrammed handkerchief —
into a surprisingly softer direction for the Italian niche line.
It opens with Oud walking arm-in-arm with a faintly
sweet floral note — whispered to be Magnolia — down a
boulevard whose olfactory backdrop seems redolent of
dark, unsweetened chocolate and Tonka bean with a hint of
Cinnamon and a sensual, smooth Sandalwood. None of these
