Fracture of the erect penis is rare but denite accident. In central Africa the

condition is well known, for women have learned that an eective method of

preventing rape is to take a rm hold of the penis and sharply bend it backwards

toward the anus. The organ suddenly becomes accid, and e!cruciating pain is

followed by great swelling from the e!tra vasated blood. "uch trauma to the erect

penis can also cause a rupture of the anterior urethra and corpus spongiosum.

The condution should be treated by immediate operation. Through a suitable

incision, clots are turned out and the corpora cavernosa repaired with sutures. #hen

the corpus spongiosum is the seat of the rupture, in addition to repairing this

structure, the torn uretra must be united carefully as this is now an open wound.
