HOW MUCH WILL YOU EAT?

hrough the investigations in this stand alone unit in Math, you will be exploring

and developing your understanding of the following concepts:

• Fractions, decimal fractions and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships.

• For fractional and decimal computation, the ideas developed for whole-number computation can apply.

After the pre-assessment, we will have whole class lessons depending on the needs of the class. The remainder of the time will be devoted to guided practice groups and Math Menu time.

GUIDELINES

•Read the descriptions of the activities before you select.

•Once you choose an activity, you must try to complete it.

•You do not need to complete all of the menu options.

•You must stay on task and allow others to complete their work.

•You must record how you spent your time on the Google Form.

When you complete your activities, you may the challenge project or go to Mathletics.

Just For Fun

You’re catering a party!You have been hired to cater a party for 75 people. They want a three course meal - a starter, entree and dessert. They have chosen their entree (see recipe on the right) but are leaving the starter and dessert up to you. Choose recipes to go with this entree and then calculate how much you will need to charge your in order to make a profit.You must provide a bill outlining the costs for your clients.

4 boneless pork chops1/2 tsp. salt1/4 tsp. pepper1 apple, peeled and chopped2 Tbsp. butter3 Tbsp. brown sugarPreheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place pork chops in baking dish and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cover dish and bake at 350 degrees F. for 30 minutes. Uncover dish and place chopped apple on top of each chop. Dot with butter and sprinkle with

brown sugar. Return to oven and bake for another 10-15 minutes until pork chops are glazed and thoroughly cooked. Serves 4

Go to the Math is Fun site and read the information. Practice with the links on this page and then complete questions 1-5 in your notebook. Be sure to write the title and the date.

Watch the movie, Reducing Fractions on BrainPop (you must log in first!). Explain how to simplify fractions, using at least 3 examples. Record your explanation and post it on your blog.
