Why Fracking?

Fracking is a national problem and is beginning to spread at a faster pace.

Many of the counties in Ohio that surround Crawford County are homes to fracking drill and injection well sites.

WHAT IS FRACKING?

Fracking, also known as hydraulic fracturing is the process in which companies use large pressurized chemical drills to pump a mixture of water, sand, and multiple types of chemicals into pipes that lead into the shale rock and extracts natural gas.

The Fracking Process

Tanker trucks haul the water used to the drill site.

Pumper truck mixes the sand, water, and chemicals then pumps it into the well.

The natural gas flows out of the well and into storage containers.

The mixture is stored in large open pits until it is hauled off to injection wells.

Stakeholders A stakeholder is a person who lives near

an injection well or fracking drill site. Many stakeholders are against the

process of fracking in their communities.

Fracking in the state of Ohio causes many health difficulties. Some of the health issues are damage to the lung tissue, issues with the brain and central nerve system, and problems with a persons cardiovascular system.

Literature Review

Case Study• In Leroy Township in Pennsylvania a natural gas leak

sent thousands of gallons of chemical infused water in a popular trout fishing stream. The flow of chemicals could not be stopped immediately.

• In Tyler County, West Virginia a tank that contained a mixture of oil, Fracking fluid, and gasses ignited, and caused an explosion. It was ignited by static electricity. The tank holding the mixture was sent flying across the well pad. Around 50 gallons of the mixture leaked into the neighboring property and a nearby stream.

• Similar cases occurred in multiple other places around the US and Canada.

Action PlanThe purpose for the project would be to cut

back on the pollution as a result of fracking.

Resolving this issue would help the stakeholders by making cleaner drinking water and less air pollution.

OUR PLAN

The mixture of chemicals, water, and sand sit in open pits where

the chemicals can leak into the ground and mix with the ground

water and some chemicals are evaporated into the air.

We want to reduce the pollution caused from fracking by

replacing the chemical mixture in fracking fluid with pressurized

water.

Also, if fracking companies continue to use the chemical mixture

then they should place the injection wells in non-populated areas

such as a desert.

Budget

The greatest expense that would be included would be the changing of the drill into a higher pressure hydro-drill.

Over time the switch to a water drill instead of chemical mixture would more than likely save money.

Needed H

elp

For the project to become a success the

fracking companies would have to be in agreement to switch

their designs of the drilling sites. Also, for the project to

become a success the

government would have to pass a legislation.

BENEFACTORS

This project is necessary because it can guarantee fresh water and cleaner air in populated communities.

RESULTS

If the project was successful then the health of the communities around fracking drill sites would overall become better.
