PRESS RELEASE FRIDAY 23RD JULY 2010
Retrospective of works by Alberto Giacometti at theFondation MaeghtBY FLORENCE DUBOSC FOR FR2DAY.COM JUL 14, 2010
This summer, the Fondation Maeght in Saint Paul de Vence is
presenting an exceptional retrospective of the work of famous Swiss
sculptor and painter Alberto Giacometti, an artist best known for his
erotic and ironical Surrealistconstructions. The Fondation
Maeght already owns one of the
most exhaustive collections in the
world of Giacometti's sculptures
including two versions of
L'homme qui marche (Walking
Man), a life-sized bronze
sculpture of a man, but for the
exhibition Giacometti & Maeght
1946 - 1966, the curator, Isabelle
Maeght, has gathered other
exceptional works from French
and international public and private collections, some of which are
being shown for the very first time.
In total, it is no less than 90 major works of 60 bronzes, 10 plaster sculptures
and 20 paintings, including portraits of Aimé Maeght and Marguerite
Maeght that await the public. It also includes some 80 drawings - one of them
represents Georges Braque on his deathbed - extremely rare painted plaster
casts, etchings, engravings, photographs, films and personal letters. Some
works from Giacometti's early and surrealist periods are shown but the
exhibition focuses mainly on the post-war period with its sculptures of stick-
thin figures with razor-sharp features.
