Auditorium Rainier III and the Grimaldi Forum, Midis Musicaux,
Matinées Classiques, and of course young people's concerts - all of
which will provide
many opportunities to
hear major works of
symphonic repertoire
from Beethoven and
Brahms, to Schumann
and Rachmaninov, and
much much more,
without forgetting
Gustav Mahler."
2010 marks the
centenary of Mahler's
death, and this concertwill be the first in the current season of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic to
mark the occasion, with a performance of his Symphony No 5. Composed
during 1901 and 1902, the work is in five movements, the most familiar of
which being the hauntingly beautiful Adiagietto. "When you hear Mahler's
Fifth," said Herbert von Karajan, "you forget that time has passed. A great
performance of the Fifth is is a transforming experience. The fantastic finale
almost forces you to hold your breath."
