Everything was looking up. Or rather, everyone was looking up. Okay, maybe not quite
everybody, but a lot of bodies. And where I was it turned into a bit of a party. “Strangers” were all
of a sudden not so afraid to be friendly to each other. We played nice together. We shared. We
shared those eclipse-viewing glasses. We shared advice about where to look and how to look. And
most of all, we shared the wonder and the beauty of it all.
Looking back, it feels like the real magic of the solar eclipse was the way it brought us together.
Yes, it did “put us in our place,” at least for a few minutes, reminding us of how “small” we are in
the middle of the marvels. But it was also a reminder that we’re not really as alone as we can
sometimes feel. We’re “in this” together. The moon was hiding and revealing all at once: it was
hiding the sun, and at the same time revealing what we have in common and so much of what share as fellow
dwellers on this little blue marble we call earth.
The last one was in 1979, and it’ll be a while before we see another like it. But you know, there are
other things in our life besides solar eclipses that are meant to help “right-size” us and bring us
together. The Mass is meant to do that. Each Sunday God invites us to gather in worship and prayer
and to feel our connectedness with him, with one another, and with the whole world, especially the
needy and the poor. Many of us, of course, don’t quite “get it,” but we keep trying. And many more
of us, sadly, kind of ignore God’s invitation, taking it for granted, maybe a little like we’d surely start taking
eclipses for granted if they happened week after week, every Sunday morning.
But the great lovers among us (in the Church we call them saints) are those who’ve learned not to take anything
for granted—and not to take anyone for granted. A saint is one who’s able to see the wonder of God’s power
and love in every eclipse, but also in every sunrise—and in every person. A saint is one who lives with purpose
and gratitude, ever aware of our connectedness with God, with one another, and with all that is—sun and moon
and every shining face …
I guess most of us are not quite there yet. Most of us are still learning how to love like that. We learn
best, of course, in the school of marriage and family. But when we get ourselves up and out of the
house, a place like Saint Anne’s has lots to teach us too. The Mass and the sacraments nourish and
heal us. Ministry and service connect and bond us. And good times and good friends encourage and
enrich us.
Our parish Street Faire in September and Cardinal Tobin’s visit to us in October are just two of the many, many
ways God’s love will continue shining in us and through us and all around us. Let’s keep on “looking up.” Let’s
keep on reaching out. And let’s keep on praying for all those around us, who aren’t really such “strangers” after
all ….
Peace and love.

REFLECTION Because He Gave Birth
by Francis of Assisi
So precious
is a person’s faith in God, so precious;
never should we harm that.
Because He gave birth
to all religions.
STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time “Or who has given the Lord anything that he may be
repaid?” (Romans 11:35)
St. Paul reminds us of a central fact of stewardship. We cannot give the Lord anything, because God already owns it all. God made everything. All that we can do is return a portion of God’s many gifts back to Him. Sincere gratitude for our gifts opens our hearts to joyful generosity.
COMING BACK IN OCTOBER!
Creation At The Crossroads Small Groups Small faith sharing groups meet to pray, read,
reflect and discuss Pope Francis’ encyclical
Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home.
Watch for all details in September bulletins!
A Word from Pope Francis: We need to communicate with each other, to
discover the gifts of each person, to promote that
which unites us, and to regard our differences as
an opportunity to grow in mutual respect.
Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the
Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we become ever
more truly the People of God. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact any of the following Pastoral Council
Representatives: Donna Stickna, Melissa Rovetto-Ruffner & Marianne Cummins .

…are not baptized Catholics, but would like to become Catholic
Could this be what you, a family member or friend have been searching for?
If you would like more information, please call Donna 201-791-1616
