The story goes that late this spring a middle schooler, fatigued from seemingly endless Zoom classroom meetings, changed his Zoom name to Reconnecting—the little ras- cal wasnt called on it for a few days, either. So for some days, it just looked to his un- suspecting teacher that his household was struggling with internet service, and he was off the hook to play video games and otherwise avoid school work. I got a kick out of this, but it also made me think. Aside from the impish nature of the prank, the unforeseen side-effects of online learning really take a toll on our children, from elementary schoolers to college students. It s demanding in ways traditional learning is not. Struggling to hear and be heard, discomfort with being watched and struggles with internet bugs (yes, these are legitimate, too!) are a few factors. And if we move from here toward the more core issues that have prompted online learn- ing, our children are anxious about the future; feeling isolated; wondering if their friends still remember them; worrying about what the fall will hold at school and with sports; and are perhaps worried by the public anger, unrest and arguments they witness on news pro- grams or hear about through parents. These are all important things to face and deal with, and some of these items—as with public discussion—just may lead to a better world, but they all take their toll nonetheless. Its not a strange or unreasonable thing for our children to sometimes just want to put up the Reconnectingmoniker and just not face it all for a while. The same is true for us adults. For sure, we have our own remarkable worries, from stressing about our children s emotional state through all this to worrying about whether or not our jobs will still be there in a couple of months. Like our younger counterparts, we too might feel that sense of deep-seeded isolation at times. Many people are very, very lonely right now. The Reconnectingveil can give us a mental break here and there, but long term dis- connection is not a good thing for any of us. We may wonder, reasonably, if the Church has answers for us during this remarkable period in our countrys history and our own personal history. What is there to take heart in, to be hopeful about? What does the Church say about anxiety and loneli- ness? How can I truly reconnect when interacting with people is such a chore and, in some cases, even dangerous to them and me? —Cont. Page 2 Fr. Table of Contents

Have you heard this little urban legend of the Zoom Age yet? It’s making its rounds. The story goes that late this spring a middle schooler, fatigued from seemingly endless Zoom classroom meetings, changed his Zoom name to “Reconnecting”—the little ras-cal wasn’t called on it for a few days, either. So for some days, it just looked to his un-suspecting teacher that his household was struggling with internet service, and he was off the hook to play video games and otherwise avoid school work.

I got a kick out of this, but it also made me think. Aside from the impish nature of the prank, the unforeseen side-effects of online learning really take a toll on our children, from elementary schoolers to college students. It’s demanding in ways traditional learning is not. Struggling to hear and be heard, discomfort with being watched and

struggles with internet bugs (yes, these are legitimate, too!) are a few factors.

And if we move from here toward the more core issues that have prompted online learn-ing, our children are anxious about the future; feeling isolated; wondering if their friends still remember them; worrying about what the fall will hold at school and with sports; and are perhaps worried by the public anger, unrest and arguments they witness on news pro-grams or hear about through parents. These are all important things to face and deal with,

and some of these items—as with public discussion—just may lead to a better world, but they all take their toll nonetheless.

It’s not a strange or unreasonable thing for our children to sometimes just want to put up the “Reconnecting” moniker and just not face it all for a while. The same is true for us adults.

For sure, we have our own remarkable worries, from stressing about our children ’s emotional state through all this to worrying about whether or not our jobs will still be there in a couple of months. Like our younger counterparts, we too might feel that sense of deep-seeded isolation at times. Many people are very, very lonely right now. The “Reconnecting” veil can give us a mental break here and there, but long term dis-connection is not a good thing for any of us.

We may wonder, reasonably, if the Church has answers for us during this remarkable period in our country’s history and our own personal history. What is there to take heart in, to be hopeful about? What does the Church say about anxiety and loneli-ness? How can I truly reconnect when interacting with people is such a chore and, in some cases, even dangerous to them and me?

Come and See 3

In beginning to approach these types of questions, we might start at re-membering how we worshipped from afar during Lent and Holy Week, reminding ourselves of the immense spiritual power of our Sacraments. We knew the situation could not keep us from loving and being loved by God, from Him loving and being loved by us. As a parish during the last few months, as well, we responded to a host of emergency outreach needs in the greater community.

Remember, too, how so many parishioners kept—and keep—looking after one another, espe-cially those who might be home-bound or otherwise vulnerable and needing an extra hand.

It wasn’t always clear then what we should do. There were times of being stumped and feeling paralyzed as a Church. But in the end, there was a lot of love and faith at work, and I believe that God showed us the way, what to do in each specific time.

Friends, there’s a lot we don’t know about this summer and fall; so much is unclear. However, I know He will once again show us the way. As be-fore, there is a whole lot of love and faith at Saint Philip, and God will never abandon us. We just don’t know what His direction and guidance will look like yet, but we know we are in the best of hands.

In the end, we never disconnected from Christ and one another. It’s just about how our continued connection will look and be carried out. Rest assured, alongside all our parish leaders, I’ll be working on the nuts and bolts of our ministries and programs this summer, and I invite your ideas, help and guidance. I’ll keep in touch, and please do the same. Have a beautiful, safe summer,

Fr. Alex

Are you, a family member or friend interested in becom-ing Orthodox but not sure what this journey entails? There is a clear, approachable and inspirational course of study, prayer and reflection that can be accomplished with Fr. Alex and other parish mentors who have taken similar paths to Orthodoxy.

Fr. Alex would be very happy to explain the process and answer questions. Please contact him to begin this joyous endeavor. There’s never a seemingly perfect time to start something new and important, but this is something you should not delay on. Father looks for-ward to hearing from you!

Approaching the Faith: Can I Become Orthodox?

Summer Schedule

LITURGICAL SCHEDULE

4th of July Doxology

Following Divine Liturgy on July 5, we will celebrate a brief Dox-ology in commemoration of the 4th of July, in thanksgiving for our beautiful country as well as taking this opportunity to pray for peace, justice and spiritual growth during this difficult time.

“We knew the situation could not keep us from loving and being loved by God, from Him loving and being loved by us.”

Voices of Faith

This liturgical reading program will con-tinue in the fall and is open to our youth and all members of our parish family. Many thanks to all of our 2019 - 20 readers for blessing us with their partic-ipation, from Sunday Epistles to virtual readers on Easter and throughout the quarantine period. Their prayerful voic-es, heard aloud within our services, were a reminder our faith is meant to be engaged by all.

Our fall schedule is being organized, for both on site and virtual reading for those not able to come to Church right now. Contact Fr. Alex.

Come and See 3

Throughout the year, people often ask what they can do to help out at Saint Philip. This summer is no exception, even if quite different with our necessary restrictions and health guidelines. Please consider the following:

***Library Area Assistance. Little by little, we’ve been trying to clean up this area in the classrooms, from reframing some of the won-derful pictures to re-purposing some older items that are not used by our faithful. Contact Fr. Alex.

***Remote Help. We can always use remote help, from developing content for our website and social media to offering proof-reading skills for various parish communications. Contact Cheryl Petren.

***Offer an idea. Share your thoughts on an existing or possible new ministry with Fr. Alex and our other parish leaders.

Each month, we try to offer some words around Stewardship and how important it is to our Church. Coming fresh off our two day Pop-Up & Drive through food event, we did something bold and completely new! We couldn’t be more proud of the people that participated. (We also recognize that there is a large percentage of people that may not have felt comfortable or could not partici-pate physically.) While the entire Church applauds this success, the challenging reality is that the money we raised only makes a moderate difference regarding the Church’s financial struggles.

What’s the answer during this difficult time and really for each and every year? Yes, supporting our Church through sacrificial giving … Stewardship. Time, talent and treasure. This is a lesson for us and a challenge to rise to. People turn to the Church and their fellow parishioners for support when the go-ing gets tough—we can adapt, and we can do this!

Speaking of adapting and looking forward, Father Alex and his dedicated team put in a huge effort with the live feed video ser-vices for many weeks throughout Great Lent, Holy Week and be-yond. This new ministry effort (which is continuing) was unprece-dented in the history of our church. It’s amazing what we can do when we decide something is worth the effort for our Church.

You may recall that we sent a letter to you along with an offering card explaining the impact of this pandemic and how it had forced us to close the church to the public and forgo our festival. We asked our faithful if they could assist with a one-time offering that would help us during these most difficult times. It was de-scribed in the letter as the “perfect storm” of events. We want to thank the 10 - 15% of our parishioners who immediately re-sponded, and we believe that more of our faithful parishion-ers will respond to our ongoing call to continue focusing on and prioritizing Stewardship as the true support mechanism for Saint Philip.

Lastly, we should commend Father Alex and all of the parishion-ers that helped with bag lunches that were so lovingly brought to the Nashua Soup Kitchen week after week during the height of the pandemic. Likewise the “68 Hours” Food Drive was also criti-cally important during times of need. This is part of the “time” as-pect of Stewardship. This is at the heart of what being a Steward of Saint Philip is. These efforts should make all of us ask, “How can I help?”

Please, let’s all take a fresh look at how we can do better go-ing forward. We all care; otherwise we would not be part of our beloved Saint Philip Church. We can look forward to a summer outreach mailing and plan. And if possible for you, please make an extra Stewardship gift to help us make up for our financial shortfall. Thank you in advance for your on-going generosity and support.

Sunday School —Tippy Johnston, Sunday

School Director

Dear Sunday School Families:

Thank you to all of our families and children that have participated in Sunday School this year, and thank you especially to our Sunday School teachers who so lovingly have shared their time and talents with our children during this challenging year. I also want to thank Bette Gioffre, my co-director, who is mov-ing from this role to other leadership opportuni-ties at Saint Philip. Our entire parish is grateful for her dedication to our Sunday School ministry—she will be missed!

We wrapped up Sunday School for the year on June 14, with our virtual Promotion, Graduation & Scholarship Event. Thanks to everyone who was a part of the heart-warming presentation, and congratu-lations to all of our students, graduates and scholar-ship recipients.

Looking to the fall, we are welcoming new teach-ers! Contact Fr. Alex or me ([email protected]) if you are interested in teaching or otherwise helping out with the Sunday School Ministry. Just like in other ministries, the more members we have helping out, the more fruitful the ministry becomes.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer! Exciting plans for our 2020 - 21 year will be shared with our families in September.

Congratulations on a year full of fun and fellowship! The school year didn't finish as we would have imagined, but I am so proud of you all for setting such great examples for your fellow parish-ioners and peers. We had many grad-uates this year and congratulations to all of you! If you haven't seen it al-ready, check out the Saint Philip Pro-motion, Graduation & Scholarship

Video Presentation at the link below.

Also, a huge thank you to those of you that were able to volunteer their time at our Greek Food Pop-Up drive through event! It was a great success thanks to your help and dedication!

In late August/early September, we hope to have a wel-come back gathering at a GOYAn's home (date TBD). We look forward to the next year of GOYA and wish you all a blessed summer and safe travels wherever you go!

If you are interested in being part of our GOYA Leader-ship Team in 2020-2021, please contact me this sum-mer: [email protected]. We need your faith, creativity and sense of community spirit in our GOYA Ministry. I look forward to hearing from you!

GOYA —Marisa Dardagiannopoulos, Advisor

On June 20, our children enjoyed a Zoom celebra-

tion to mark the last day of classes. We are so grateful to Mrs. Booras for creatively carrying on with classes via Zoom this spring. Further, we thank all of our students and parents for their participation; enroll-ment for fall 2019 was an all-time high for the last decade—let’s grow our numbers even more for 2020 - 21. Registration details will be available in September.

Hands Up for Our Youth! Get Involved in the Fall!

The Poetry of Summer

It’s time to consider the youth ministries and pro-grams of our parish and ask ourselves, “What am I waiting for?” It’s time to get involved—time to put our hands up, and say, “I’m in!” Your time and tal-ent are wanted within our ministries in 2020 - 21.

As the Sunday School piece above reminds, new teachers are warmly invited to join us this fall. In addition, parent leaders are wanted for JOY, Family Night and more.

Please do contact Tip-py Johnston regarding Sunday School and Fr. Alex to help with other vital youth ministries.

Lord, Jesus Christ, grant that our graduates may grow in wisdom and understanding. May they prosper in good works for the glorification of Your Holy Name. Give them health

and a long life that they may labor for the building up and glory of Your Holy Church, this nation and of all Your people. Amen.

Saint Kyriaki was the daughter of Christian parents, Dorotheus and Eu-sebia. She was given her name be-cause she was born on a Sunday (Kyriaki is the Greek word for Sun-day). She was a woman of tremen-dous faith and dedicated herself to proclaiming the Gospel to all she met. About the year 300, she was perse-cuted for her faith by the Roman gov-ernment and, after refusing to give up on her Lord, was executed. It is said that before her execution, she was granted a few moments to pray. She said her prayer—then gave up her holy soul in peace. Because she

gave up her life for her Lord, she has been given the title “Great Mar-tyr” by the Church; an additional interesting point is that in the icon above, she is depicted holding a cross. In iconography, a saint hold-ing a cross is the symbol of martyrdom.

Getting Practical: While little is known about the details of Saint Kyriaki's life, something tremendous is known—her faith in Christ was the core of everything. It filled her with holy motiva-tion, and it emboldened her to the point where she was able to stand up to the pagan authorities of her time and die for Christ. We, too, can be brave in our faith. We can stand up for what is right; we can defend what we believe in; and we can entrust the Lord with our lives.

The Metropolis of Boston Sum-mer Camp is an outstanding, meaningful resource at our dis-posal, helping our children stay

connected to the Church every summer. Of course, this is a unique summer, and MBC is rising to the challenge by offering its first ever virtual camping experience, which will include Orthodox Life, virtual events, cabin devotionals, video contests and more. There are two weeks to join us:

Session 1: Week of July 6 Session 2: Week of July 13

Register today, and offer your children a great virtual camping, friendship and faith experience: metropolisofbostoncamp.org.

Scholarship Awards

While we highlighted our high school and college graduates in our last Come & See, it’s time to recognize our schol-arship recipients. We con-gratulate them all, and we will keep them in our pray-ers and thoughts for a fall 2020 of academic progress, friendship and spiritual growth. In addition, we are grateful to Agape and AHEPA for mak-ing these opportunities possible for our beloved youth.

Outreach Snapshot —”68 Hours”

While it was a joy and a relief to finally open up our parish for public worship in May, this continues to be a learning process for us all—and we must continue to observe all state and Metropolis guidelines as we worship and interact at Saint Philip this summer. We are making progress, and our relationship with

God can still flourish through it all.

Before you come to worship on a given Sunday, please make sure to read the rules/guidelines letter mailed and emailed to us all. In addition, thanks in advance for your careful observance of everything asked of you by our kind Parish Council ushers.

As the summer moves on, we’ll keep you up to date on any new developments. In addition, Fr. Alex will continue Orthodox Life this summer via Zoom, and he’ll be planning with all our ministry leaders for a safe, comprehensive and creative approach to all our ministries and programs for the fall.

A special thanks to all those that helped support our Saint Philip Pop-Up drive through food event! We tried something new and managed to pull in 550 on-line orders over 2 days, all while staying distanced and safe! We look forward to our next event, which will look like this one with some different food options. Now that this has proven successful, we hope to gather more volunteers to help expand our next mini-festival. Again, we thank you all for the help we received. Now let's work together to make the next one an even bigger success!

If you’re interested in helping with our next event (there will be host of roles from cooking and cleaning to managing phone orders and “running” orders), please contact us this summer. As with our June event, planning and sharing the workload is everything.

We look forward to hearing from you. Contact Doug Philipon: [email protected].

Come and See 3

As the pandemic came upon us, Saint Philip quickly made strides in offering our faithful streaming ser-vices via You Tube and Face Book. While our resources are very limited during this difficult time, we will be striving to continue this new ministry going forward.

Our You Tube and other social media links are easily accessi-ble from the “Media” page of our site: stphilipnh.org/media/

Streaming Services

This summer, Women’s Prayer Group & Bible Study will break (though a few special “one-time” Zoom gath-erings may be announced), and Fr. Alex will contin-ue Orthodox Life: “Eleven Stories” on select Thursdays, with the aims of keeping us connected to scripture, opening the lives of the saints up to us and

revealing the relevance of the Orthodox Faith to our daily lives, especially dur-ing this most unique time.

See Father’s email for information on each Zoom meeting, along with the texts of items to read in advance. No prior experience with Bible study is needed, and all parishioners are

warmly invited to join us.

For the time being, these important elements of wor-ship and parish life, respectively, remain on hold due to health concerns. Fr. Alex and our Parish Council will be paying close attention to developing decisions by the governor and recommendations by health au-thorities. We’ll keep you up to date with any news.

EDUCATION/NEWS

Adult Education Summer 2020

Choir & Fellowship Hour

We continue to offer rides to Church—as well as assistance getting to doctor appointments, shopping and other important errands—for those who are unable to get there on their own. This service is completely confidential and all proper safety precautions will be ob-served. If you or a loved one could use just a little help getting around, let us know.

Please contact Elaine Gentile to make arrangements: 603.345.7893.

Rides to Church & More! —Daughters of Penelope

This is a great time to review basic safety measures and reiterate the importance of utilizing safety equipment when participating in biking, skateboarding or water activi-ties. Reminding teenagers to wear seatbelts and avoid distracted driving will help to keep them safe. Safety this summer takes on added meaning. Now we are called up on to keep safe in different ways. To keep physically and mentally healthy, take nor-mal, healthy precautions (along with masks, social distancing), avoid overconsump-

tion of media, use your successful coping skills and avoid prolonged social isolation. Be safe ... be well this summer!

Blood Pressure Clinic, and consultation on Sundays after Liturgy, will resume as soon as we are all back together as a community. Contact Anita Pavlidis with questions: [email protected].

Health/Wellness Ministry —Safety

June was National Safety Month and focused on school vacation—watching the children as they enjoy freedom from “schedules” and “routines.”

Creative Solutions: Tray & Candles

Many parishioners have asked how they might participate in these beloved aspects of parish life, even when this might not be the time for them to be physically present.

For parishioners not attending Saint Philip and wishing to make a virtual “tray” offering on Sunday, consider Venmo (search “stphilipnashua”) or the “General Dona-tions” page of our parish site: http://www.stphilipnh.org/donate/ (choose “Other Donations”). For parishioners who would like Fr. Alex to light a candle for them and pray the names of their loved ones, the “Virtual Candle” page can be found here: http://www.stphilipnh.org/donate/candle.php (and within the “General Donations” page.

We hope these solutions are helpful, and we’ll contin-ue to pursue creative approaches to parish life.
