WARM UPIn the next available 6 pages, GLUE in
“Atomic Structure and Periodic Table” Learning Target (1 page leave other side blank)
Atomic Structure Notes (2 pages next to each other)
Bohr Model Notes (2 pages next to each other)
LEARNING TARGETS I can use the periodic table to create Bohr
models and Lewis Dot Structures for any of the first 20 elements.
(Level 4) I can explain how the light emitted (put out) by an energized hydrogen atom helped Bohr figure out his model
FLAME TEST DEMOAs you watch the demonstration,
try to answer this question: What makes different colors in
fireworks?

ATOMIC STRUCTURE NOTESTerm What it tells you Example
Name
Symbol
Atomic Number
Atomic Mass Unit (amu)
The name of the element
The abbreviation associated with the name
Number of protonsNumber of electrons in single atom
Number of protons + Number of neutrons

Na
SodiumThen how many neutrons does Sodium have?
FLAME TEST DEMOWhy is Lithium pinkish purple? Why is Sodium green? Each element in the periodic table has
electrons that are “energized” by the flame
When these particles are “energized” they jump to a higher energy level
As they come back to their original energy level, they emit different colors!!!
ATOMIC STRUCTURE PRACTICE
Do: Atomic Structure Practice
Use: Your notes and your table group
Ask: Three, before me
Raise: Your hand, if your group has a question
Time: 11 minutes
When Done: Turn into your teacher
VALENCE ELECTRONS
• Valence electrons are the outer most electrons on a atom. The last ring that has an electron Valence electrons determine what that
element will react with, do, look like, etc. With a full valence electron shell, the atoms
are stable and happy.....noble gas! Octet Rule: atoms want a full level of
electrons (typically 8)Exception is Helium (has 2 in outer shell)
