GRADE 2 AND 3 CLASS NEWS

Welcome back! This year there are 15 Grade 2/3 students in the class. We are very lucky to have an interning teacher joining us until Christmas, Miss Prall. Miss Prall will slowly begin taking over subjects and leading activi-ties and lessons. Our class will be using a literacy program called Daily 5, which consists of 5 literacy stations that groups of students rotate through, working on reading and writing tasks. These stations are: Read to Self Work on Writing Read to Someone Word Work Listen to reading Groups of students will also work with the teacher as one of their stations, working on spelling, reading strategies, and comprehen-sion. We will be using the LLI program in our small groups. Students have been working on building their reading stamina and learning about the expec-tations for each of these stations. They have also learned about choosing books that are "just right" for them. Once students have prac-ticed working in each station, we will begin sending home Reading Bags to bring their reading home with them!

MRS. HAYES AWESOME GRADE 8/9 CLASS:

Welcome Back!

E.L.A. 8\9 - we are starting a short story/poetry unit called "Becoming Myself." We will be read-ing short stories & poems that focus on identity while looking at the five elements of a short sto-ry. This year we will be spending one day a week at the public library read-ing independently and working on our book talk projects. S.S. 8\9 we are looking at cur rent events and starting our society/culture unit focusing on dy-namic relationships. Visual Art 8\9 We are starting with the visual art strand. The students have finished their art folder & are going to be immersed in the elements of art. Just getting back into the groove. These young adults are learning the expectations & routines of the classroom. We will be using the MyBlue-print app in the future. As for now, please feel free to contact me through email at [email protected] with any questions or concerns. I am looking forward to spending the next ten months with these young adults.

Mrs. A. Hayes

MR. SUTHERLAND’S GRADE 6/7!

Welcome back, we are now into our second week and we are starting to get our routines in place. The first week went by very fast. We spent time co-creating rules for the classroom so that it is enjoya-ble for all of us. We also spent time going over our behavior matrix. This provides the students with the expected behaviors at different places in the school. Parents please check this newsletter for important dates, and you can also check our website. As a class we are spending time getting to know each other and how we learn best as a class. We have a fishing bulletin board outside of our classroom. I have asked the students to bring a picture of them doing something they enjoyed doing with their fam-ily so I can post it on this.

The first project that we have been working on is “all about me”. This has looked different in each class. Some examples are a collage of each students interest, 18 questions that we want to ask each other, art work with an acrostic poem, and stories about our summer. In math we are going over some of the foundations of math as well as pre-assessing skills to determine the depth that concepts need to be taught. In social we learning about resources and trade partners. In science we are learning about our solar system. I strongly recommend reading with your child at home as well as working on math con-cepts. A little each night will pay off a lot as the year goes on. I also recommend getting a public library card. This opens up a lot more reading op-tions/interests. In closing we want to wish everyone a safe harvest.
