REMINDER: MULTICULTURAL MASS AND CELEBRATION Meeting for the Organising Committee will be held on Monday, 23rd April at 5.30pm, St Mary’s Parish Centre.

Next week Australians celebrate Anzac Day. Anzac day is a deep and complex event in the Australian psyche. Civic rituals and prayers occur in every town and suburb in the land. We also pick up the themes,

nuances and mood in our Mass for the day. Anzac Day carries multiple overtones:

It is a martyr’s day when we commemorate the sacrifice of the fallen and honour those who gave their life that we might live.

It is a commemoration of the dead when we commend those who have died in war to the Lord, especially members of our own families.

It is a prayer for peace, because all war is horrible no matter what heroism it reveals.

It is a day of national identity, an Australian ‘coming of age’ a decade and a half after the formation of the commonwealth.

It is a story of victory in defeat, survival and life in the face of overwhelming odds.

Anzac Day always occurs close to Easter. One cannot but be impressed by the Easter symbolism which permeates all the interwoven themes of Anzac Day. It is deeply moving to recognise that at the heart of the Australian psyche is the mystery which we understand to be paschal, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

THANKS SACRISTAN: Over the last few weeks some Parishioners who have helped in their parishes for many years have decided to step aside.

Let me first of all thank Terri Wright from St Brigid’s, Margaret and Mary Elmore from Immaculate Heart and Donna and Rob Hooper from St Marys. Each have left for different and sincere reasons – we can honour their service and generosity by encouraging others to ‘step up’ into these important and vital ministries.

Our sincere thanks is extended to Terri, Margaret and Mary and Rob and Donna - these very generous people who for many years have worked quietly in serving us so that our liturgies go so smoothly. They have been the people who have ensured the Churches are open; lights on and off; everything is set up for Mass, weddings and funerals; the Church is cleaned up after liturgies and much more. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!

If anyone is interested to help in sacristy ministry, please speak with Fr Stephen. The more people who come forward the more the tasks are shared, and the more we can strengthen responsibility within our Community. Let’s pray in thanksgiving for Terri, Margaret, Mary, Rob and Donna – indeed, for all who serve the Parishes in ministry!

HOLY LAND GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION

Thank you for the generous response to the collections at the Passion Service on Good Friday - St Brigid’s ($181.50),

St Joseph’s ($545.15) and St Mary’s ($1134.60).

$1861.25 was sent from the Ipswich Catholic Community to support the

shrines and holy places in the Holy Land.

GOD’S WILL - OUR REWARD: With a life in Jesus as our foundation, God’s call to us and our ultimate purpose in life tend to look very different. Thinking less about the decisions themselves and more about the life those decisions effect, we realize that what matters most to God is ultimately not what we choose but the amount of love that those decisions create in our lives; where we go to school, what we do for a living, and our familial life matters to God only to the extent that what we choose enables us to live as Christ-like as we can. All that God will and all that God calls us to be is his adopted sons and daughters. That’s it! From Called: What happens After Saying Yes to God. ANIMATION GROUP: The Animation Group has been asked to

evaluate and give feedback on the Easter Liturgies of 2018. If any Parishioner would like to comment on what we did for Lent and Easter please feel free to contribute to the feedback. Email the Office or Fr Stephen, or pop a note on the Collection Plate this week and the Animation Group will look at them at the next meeting. Your feedback is most welcome!

A sub committee of each of the Parish Finance Committees is meeting over the next few weeks to plan the Renewal of the Planned Giving Program in May. Any ideas or thoughts are welcome. Feel free to contact the Parish Office.

‘Every human being desires communion and peace. Everyone needs peaceful co-existence. But this can grow only when we also build inner peace in our heart. Many people live in a constant hurry. In this way all that they have

inside them tends to be overwhelmed. This also affects how we treat the environment. It is necessary to grant oneself more time to recover a serene harmony with the world, with creation, and also with the Creator. Let us try, in contemplation and prayer, to achieve ever greater familiarity with God. And gradually we will discover that the heavenly Father wants what is good for us. God wants to see us happy, full of joy and serene. It is this familiarity with God that also inspires our mercy. Just as the Father loves, so do God’s children. As God is merciful, we too are called upon to be merciful towards each other. Let us allow ourselves to be touched by God’s mercy, to become increasingly merciful like the Father.’ – Pope Francis, 27 May 2016.

POSITIONS VACANT: We are looking for people to help to organise the Parish Dinner. If you are interested in as-sisting to plan, or prepare, or organise this event, please see Fr Stephen or call the Parish Office this week. You might have some ideas on how this might happen in 2018!

PLANNED GIVING RENEWAL: We are going to have a Renewal of the Planned Giving Program in July over three weekends. If

you would like to help in this renewal, please see Fr Stephen or email him: [email protected]

Come join a time of

prayer, quietness and

reflection lead by

Fr Stephen.

WOMEN’S WEEKEND RETREAT: COMPASSIONATE LIVING:

In order to live a compassionate life, we need to develop and deepen compassion within ourselves, and commit to being a compassionate presence for ourselves and for others. Come, take time apart in silence, supported within a community of women, be kind to yourself, and deepen your journey to the heart of compassion. Friday 25 May – Sunday 27 May. Santa Teresa Spirituality Centre, Ormiston. Facilitated by Sue Thomas on behalf of Dragonfly Ministries. For more information contact [email protected] or on 0409 524 283.

CAN YOU PLEASE HELP WITH TRANSPORT? We have been asked to assist a lady in the Brassall area who wishes to attend Mass – perhaps once per month at this stage. She would be keen to attend either 7.30am at St. Joseph’s or 8.30am at St. Mary’s. Please contact the Parish Office (3281 2133) with your offer of help.

MOTHER’S DAY FLOWERS: The North Ipswich Conference of St Vincent de Paul has been offered the proceeds of the sale of bunched chrysanthemums this Mother’s Day. A number of local schools and HIVE Youth members have expressed their willingness to sell the flowers through their school and parish communities, however we are in urgent need of helpers to prepare and wrap the bunches. The flowers will be cut and prepared in the period from Monday 7th to Friday 11th May 2018, and we will need a minimum of four volunteers each day. This is a case of many hands making light work, so if you can lend a hand for even a couple of hours, your help will be greatly appreciated. The income generated will be a great help in funding the work of SVDP and the occasion will pro-

vide an opportunity for socialising and meeting new friends. Please call Maree (32812133); or Neil (32810131) to register your availability.

“For this year’s World Day of Prayer for Vocations, the Vocation Brisbane Office is holding a special live stream event, where young people can come together to experience prayer celebrating vocations and young people. If you are interested in participating in this live stream event, please meet outside the St. Stephen’s Cathedral, at 1:30pm, on Sunday, the 22nd of April.”

ANZAC DAY - WEDNESDAY, 25 APRIL: On Wednesday, 25 April, all around Australia at various shrines of remembrance and War Memorials, people will gather at dawn to honour those men and women who have gone off to war. It is the dawn of another ANZAC Day. It is a day of remembrance of the deaths and sufferings in war, the valour of fighting women and men and the ever present hope for the people of the world to live together in harmony and lasting peace. On this day let us remember those people who live the reality of war each day. For the women, men and children of Afghanistan, Timor Leste, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Burundi, Syria and for the

people of many other countries who as you read this are experiencing the devastation of conflict. Let us remember all those who are striving to bring peace to these war torn environments. On this Anzac Day may we pray that in all our dealings we promote a peace-filled world.

For members of our families and former Parishioners who represented our country in war – we pray in thanksgiving. For those members of our families and current parishioners who are Defence Personnel – we pray for their safety.
