Welcome
Voluntary: (8:30) Fanfare Healy Willan (1880-1968)
(11:00) A Joyous Fanfare Fred Gramann (b. 1950)
Carillon Choir
Call to Worship:
In the darkest valley,
at the banquet table;
in the hard work of life,
in moments of ease;
in our day-to-day reality,
at times set aside–
like this time, now–
for worship, for listening, for paying attention;
with every step we take:
goodness and mercy follow us;
our cups overflow.
*Processional Hymn - No. 81: Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken austrian hymn
*Call to Confession
*Corporate Prayer of Confession:
God of hope and safety,
like sheep who go astray,
we have wandered from your paths of life and light.
We have heard the Shepherd’s voice calling us by name,
but we have turned instead to our own way.
Show us your tender mercy;
restore us in the security of your fold.
Lead us back to still waters,
seat us again at your bounteous table.
Fill us with your Spirit,
that we might bear glad witness
to your saving mercy,
revealed to us in the Great Shepherd,
Jesus Christ, our Lord.
*Silent Prayer of Confession
Please join in reading
aloud those parts of the
service printed in bold.
When this symbol (*)
precedes an element of
the service, please rise
in body or spirit.

Prayer for Illumination
Psalter Reading: Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures;
he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul;
he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Anthem (11:00): Hark! I Hear the Harps Eternal Dan Edwards (b. 1951)
Carillon Choir
Hark, I hear the harps eternal
Ringing on the farther shore,
As I near those swollen waters
With their deep and solemn roar.
Hallelujah, hallelujah,
Hallelujah, praise the lamb!
Hallelujah, hallelujah,
Glory to the great I AM!

Sermon: Our Grasping and God’s Grip Ron Shive
Responding to the Word *Hymn of Response – No. 803: My Shepherd Will Supply My Need resignation
*Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the holy catholic church;
the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting.
Amen.

Reviving my soul by finding fresh water,
guiding my ways with a shepherd’s care.
Though I should walk in death’s dark valley,
I fear no evil with you by my side,
your shepherd’s staff to comfort me.
You spread my table in sight of my foes,
anoint my head, my cup runs over;
you tend me with love always loyal.
I dwell with the Lord as long as I live.

Christian life, we often think of it in personal terms, neglecting its broader dimensions as a spiritual gift and a
ministry. In Reflections on Forgiveness, we'll explore biblical texts which have shaped popular thinking on
forgiveness (occasionally in unfortunate ways), refract these texts through the lens of the Incarnation, and
suggest ways thoughtful Christians might bring a refreshed perspective to the work of witness in daily life.
