I was reminded again that the recommended wearing of face coverings is not a right but a decision that affects not only you but also every person you come into contact with. More and more of the

health officials both here in Ontario and across the country are promoting the wearing of face coverings to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We should be seriously considering the effect of our militancy on not wearing a face covering and how that it might impact on someone with a threatened and compromised immunity. In some communities the wearing of the mask is mandatory and if someone wants admission into a building or transportation then they have to wear the face covering or not be admitted. I can only appeal to your social conscience and ask that you reconsider your opinion on not wearing a face covering. For the time being I will advise any of our parishioners who have a vulnerable status of health and would be compromised in situations when not everyone is wearing masks to stay at home and watch livve streaming from Blessed Sacrament at 9 am. on Sundays or another Mass that is televised. It is important that you protect yourselves as we are trying to do when people come to Church. We might have come into Phase 3 of reopening but this does not mean that we let down our defences against the virus. All one has to do is watch the news and see the effects of not observing protocols will do. Keep safe - physical distance at least six feet - wash your hands for 20 seconds - wear a mask.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Overcoming weakness

Reading I Wisdom 12: 13, 16-19 (on God’s mercy) Reading II Romans 8: 26-27 (the intercession of the Spirit) Gospel Matthew 13: 24-30 (the parable of the weeds) Key Passage: Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know ho w to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. (Romans 8: 26) Adult: What weakness can the power of the Spirit help you overcome? Child: When will you need the help of the Holy Spirit this week?

ANNIVERSARIES

Congratulations to Terry & Connie Abel who are celebrating their 51st anniversary.

PRAYER CHAIN We have people who want to pray for whatever

request comes to them. If you need prayers, please contact Maureen at 519-352-8530

or Michelle at 519-352-9483.

I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayers.

Psalm 17:6

Deacon’s Pen Like the rest of the Parish Team, I have missed seeing your smiling faces for the last 3 months and I have also kept you in my prayers. I have enjoyed having time to myself and reflecting on what is happening in our world. I have tried to imagine what God is trying to tell us, and if we are taking the time to hear and respond to his voice. Whilst we are quick to recognise the terrific work our First Responders, doctors and nurses do, there are others whose work went largely unnoticed and maybe underappreciated. Those who work in grocery stores, pharmacies, variety stores and gas stations. Truck drivers, maintenance workers, the folks who work at the Beer Store or LCBO and many more, far too numerous to mention. THANK YOU ALL. COVID 19 has exposed many weaknesses in our society. The deplorable conditions some seniors are forced to endure in some nursing homes. I thank God for the outstanding work done in Chatham-Kent, where our nursing homes were kept Covid free. The nation has been confronted with racial and cultural prejudices that abound in our society and which many, me included, see and have not really recognised it for what it is. Black Lives Matter has become a rallying call. All Lives Matter, from conception to natural death. Maybe because I believe this, I think others do too. I have had time to reflect upon a few other things too; a living wage, equal opportunities and fair treatment for all. A more loving society. I know a lot of people will say, and they are correct, people took advantage of Jesus; he knew it and expected it. The bad in the world will always take advantage of the good. I would like to draw your attention to today’s Gospel. The farmer, God, sowed good seed. The enemy, Satan, sowed weeds. Jesus’ response; “Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.” We are called to live the way Jesus taught us. That is why he sent us the Holy Spirit. To lead good lives, support the weak and oppressed and love one another as Jesus loves us. Have a great week. Peace and May God Bless you all; Deacon Morgan.

As we are all forced to slow down in our current world, unfortunately some things continue along, such as our household bills and expenses. The same goes for our parishes as well, that operate mainly on donations received at Mass. If you normally donate with your offertory envelope when you attend Mass, there are some other options—including a new, easy, online option.

E-TRANSFER Using your online banking website or app, add the parish you wish to donate to using the parish email address: Blessed Sacrament – [email protected] Our Lady of Victory – [email protected] St. Agnes – [email protected] St. Joseph – [email protected] St. Ursula – [email protected]

Create the e-transfer and in the comment/note area, please indicate your envelope number or your address and which fund you are donating to, such as Sunday Offertory, Easter, Building, Share Lent etc.

No password is needed as the parishes are set up for autodeposit.

CHEQUE If you do not use online banking, you can mail a cheque to the office. Please make your cheque payable to the particular parish and on the memo line, indicate which fund you are donating to. Please mail it to:

St. Agnes Parish 52 Croydon St. Chatham ON N7L 1L3 Attention: “Name of parish you are donating to”

PAD (Pre-Authorized Debit) If you wish to set up PAD, you won’t have to worry about remembering to bring your envelope to Mass or be concerned that you can’t donate because you can’t attend Mass, such as our current situation.

There is a form available on the website (www.ccfp.dol.ca/how-to-donate or click Giving/How to Donate on the top menu). You can print off the form and fill it out and either scan the form and a void cheque and email it (using the email addresses above), or mail the form and void cheque to the office (using the address indicated above). Please note for this method, the form must be received before the 15th of the month in order to take effect the next month.

We have a new way to make your donations to the Chatham Catholic Family of Parishes! Parishioners and visitors can make donations online using a computer, laptop, tablet or any mobile device, using your Visa and Mastercard (credit card, as well as Visa and Mastercard debit cards) for any type of donation. This includes both one-time donations and recurring donations. We have been working with a team of experts from Pllenty Inc. to develop this capability.

Getting Started Is Easy • Using your mobile device’s camera, scan the QR

code (see codes below with the particular parish name you wish to donate to), and simply follow the instructions on the screen to make your donation. If you have an older Android smartphone, you may have to install a scanning app — newer androids and all iPhones will scan without the scanning app. You will quickly be directed to the web application.

OR • On your computer or electronic device, go to

Chatham Catholic Family of Parishes website: www.ccfp.dol.ca, then choose the How to Donate button on the home screen, or on the top menu, click Giving/How to Donate, and follow the instructions for the particular parish you wish to donate to.

You will have the option to choose where your donation will go, such as Regular Sunday Offertory, Christmas, Building etc. You can also add a comment. Any funds donated through Pllenty will be part of your annual tax receipt from the parish.

There is no fee to make your donation using this service. Pllenty Inc. runs on Amazon Web services and meets strict Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DDS) for service providers.

This option is currently not available for Our Lady of Victory Parish.
