Please know that, in recording all the parts of this liturgy — spoken, sung and played — we have carefully observed responsible norms of social distancing.

Please join in reading or singing those parts of the service printed in bold.

The composer of the Children’s Choir anthem is FPC member, Grace Jones. Grace is a music lover and a soprano in the Chancel Choir.

The Advent Wreath — four candles (three blue, one rose) in a perfect circle of evergreen symbolizing the eternity of God —helps us to “keep our lamps trimmed and burning” as we anticipate the coming of Christ, symbolized by the large white candle in the center.

Advent Paraments and Stoles were commissioned and made by quilter and artist, Beth Taylor of Durham, NC, for the pulpit, lectern, communion table, and stoles for our pastors. The front banners are new this year.

PRAYER OF CONFESSIONGod of Good News,The story of Your coming to dwell among us stretches our minds and hearts. How shall we make room for You among our habits and assumptions? You promise favor among the lowly, the poor, the forgotten – but we have seen them with the eyes of business as usual. You bid us not to fear the voices of tyrants and power-mongers – but we have heard them with ears of cautious compliance. You ask us to believe that peace is possible, that hope will triumph, that the light of love is stronger than darkness. It sounds like a dream. We long to believe; help our unbelief.Free us from the limits of our own doubt and fearto trust and celebrate the tidings of comfort and joythat You are here, and that love will prevail –

RESPONDING

ANTHEM Luke 1:46–55 Magnificat John FergusonMy soul magnifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,For he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; For the Mighty One has done great things for me, And holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the mighty from their thrones,And lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things,And sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,According to the promise he made to our ancestors,To Abraham and his descendants forevermore.

Did you notice that the singers now have new masks? These are special masks for singers that have extra filter protection inside the masks and an extended frontal piece. These have been provided to our singers by the Safety Committee. The singers are practicing social distancing as they sing.

CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Gloria in excelsis Deo!Gloria in excelsis Deo!

This is the Refrain of Hymn 113, Angels We Have Heard on High (gloria).

CLOSING VOLUNTARY Fugue on the Magnificat Johann Sebastian Bach

Use these offertory moments to savor your gratitude for the abundance of God’s love — and to consider your own response in loving service. As you consider making your offering, remember that the church’s regularexpenses continue in these difficult times. And the community around us needs your financial support: your faithful giving is like the breath of life to mission programs we love, neighbors in need, members who are hurting. Thank you for your faithful generosity!

Ways to give: online on the First Pres homepage … via “Text-to-Give” (855-904-1523) … use our Give+ app ... put a check in the mail ... or scan the QR code below. (Call Finance Manager Anna Miller if you need assistance.)

The closing voluntary is a fugue based on a Gregorian melody for chanting the Magnificat. This older melody was retained and given a new German text for Lutheran Vespers services. The first half of the melody is used as the fugue subject and the complete melody appears only in the pedals towards the end of the piece.

STAR OF THE COUNTY DOWNIrregular

By employing an energetic Irish folk song for its melody, this ballad-like paraphrase of the MagniÞcat, Mary’ssong at her meeting with her relative Elizabeth (Luke 1:46–55), recaptures both the wonder and the faith ofthe young woman who Þrst recognized what God was doing.

WELCOME TO WORSHIP! Leaders of Worship: Welcome – Jay Sanderford; Candlelighters – Adrienne and Tom Licata and their daughters Sophie and Vivian; Liturgists – Mark Mares and Andrew Frazier; Lectors – Brad Taylor andDaniel Washington; Children’s Message – Beca Torres-Davenport; Preacher – Rick Spalding; Children’s Choir, Kellie McInchak, Director; Soloists – Lorna Hildebrandt, Leslie Smith, Taylor Adams, Heidi Hess-Willis, Tyrese Byrd, David Magumba, Benton DeGroot, and Brent Ivey; Derek Lockhart, trumpet; Organist – Paul Haebig; Conductor – Dave VanderMeer; Videographer – Bill Hall; Sound technician – Rol Kibler A word about the paper lace banner for the fourth week of Advent from artist Ellen Phillips:

Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever; your throne shall be established forever.(2 Samuel 7:16)

He has helped his servant Israel in remembrance of his mercy, according to his promises he made...forever.(Luke 1:55)

To the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever. (Romans 16:27)

[Jesus] will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. (Luke 1:33)

When we use the word “forever” in conversation, we don’t really mean “forever.” We mean maybe until something new or different or better comes along, at best we mean until the day we die. When God says “forever,” God actually means forever. God’s love stretches to a place where there is no concept of time, beyond our earth, our solar system, our known galaxy. We are part of this vast love and all we are called to do is to love God and to glorify Jesus Christ forever.

The season of Advent this year invites us to consider “Those Who Dream” – and to imagine joining them. As we remember this line from the 126th Psalm – When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream… – we contemplate the promise of God’s nearness, the intimations that all is not lost, the signs of the power of love even with so much arrayed against it in this world. Are we dreaming when we imagine, with Isaiah, a world where the crooked way is made straight and the rough way smooth? Are we dreaming when, with Mary, we sing the joy of fulfillment and justice? Are we dreaming when we cry out with John the Baptist for a world without hypocrisy and deceit? Are we dreaming to hope, as Jesus himself taught us to hope, that the poor in spirit are blessed and beloved of God? Even as the cold gathers and the dark deepens toward the Light, we are becoming like those who dream...

Join Rev. Rogers for a virtual Coffee Hour Sunday immediately following the Closing Voluntary. For the first 20–30 minutes, we have group conversation, and then we split into small groups. Around 11:15, Coffee Hour conversations end. If you have questions or need help, please contact Rev. Rogers. Special guest is Publications Coordinator Mary Jones who is retiring today after serving First Pres for more than 17 years. Coffee Hour will be a time to celebrate Mary and to send her off with our gratitude and blessing. Click here to enter Coffee Hour: https://firstpresbyterian.org/event/virtual-coffee-hour
