    WORSHIP AID FOR DECEMBER 19-20

Opening Hymn — O Come, Divine Messiah!

O come, Divine Messiah! The world in silence waits the day When hope shall sing its triumph, and sadness flee away.

Dear Savior, haste! Come, come to earth. Dispel the night and show your face, and bid us hail the dawn of grace. O come, Divine Messiah! The world in silence waits the day When hope shall sing its triumph, And sadness flee away.

O come, Desired of nations, whom priest and prophet long foretold. Come break the captive fetters, redeem the long-lost fold. (Dear Savior, haste…)

    WORSHIP AID FOR DECEMBER 19-20

    Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. (All bow at the following words through “and became man.”) For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the father and the Son, who with the father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Preparation of the Gifts

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of His name, for our good and the good of all His holy Church. Sanctus

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Memorial Acclamation

Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection, you have set us free. Invitation to Communion

Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Please remain at your seat to receive Holy Communion. The ministers will come to you through the empty row in front of you.

As the minister approaches, please stand if you are able and remove your mask. You are asked to please receive Holy Communion in the hand.

After receiving Communion, you may kneel or be seated and replace your mask.

    WORSHIP AID FOR DECEMBER 19-20

Communion Hymn — No Wind at the Window

No wind at the window, no knock on the door; No light from the lampstand, no foot on the floor; No dream born of tiredness, no ghost raised by fear: Just an angel and a woman and a voice in her ear.

“O Mary, O Mary, don’t hide from my face. Be glad that you’re favored and filled with God’s grace. The time for redeeming the world has begun; And you are requested to mother God’s son.

“This child must be born that the kingdom might come: Salvation for many, destruction for some; Both end and beginning, both message and sign; Both victor and victim, both yours and divine.”

No payment was promised, no promises made; No wedding was dated, no blueprint displayed. Yet Mary, consenting to what none could guess, Replied with conviction, “Tell God I say yes.”

Text: John L. Bell, b.1949. Tune: COLUMCILLE, Irregular; Gaelic, arr. By John L. Bell, b.1949. © 1992, Iona Community, GIA Publications, Inc., agent. Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Closing Hymn — O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

O come, O Key of David, come, and open wide our heav’nly home; Make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel!

O come, O Dayspring from on high and cheer us by your drawing nigh; Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death’s dark shadow put to flight. (Rejoice…)

O come, Desire of nations, bind in one the hearts of humankind; O bid our sad divisions cease, And be for us our King of Peace. (Rejoice…)

Dear Parishioners, Louis Pasteur was a famous scientist and immunologist. Pasteur was horrified that thousands of people, especially children, died from rabies. He worked for years on a vaccine, but he did not have a subject on which to test his work. He was about to experiment on himself when a neighbor’s young son, named Joseph Meister, was bitten by a rabid dog. The boy’s mother begged Pasteur to try his vaccine on her son. Reluctantly and only because there was no apparent hope for the boy otherwise, Louis Pasteur administered the vaccine. The boy lived. Years later, Louis Pasteur was very ill and preparations were being made for his tombstone. He was asked by a close friend what he wanted written on the tombstone. Pasteur answered, “Just three words would sum up what was the most important work of my life — ‘Joseph Meister lived!’” If you were to look over your whole life, whose life has been significantly altered for the better because of your influence? Are there people in your past who are “alive” in a new way because of you? Then again, is there a “Louis Pasteur” in your life who made such an impression that you are “alive” in a new way? The season of Advent provides us with opportunities to reflect on how Jesus came so that we might “have life and have it to the fullest.” As we prepare for the season of gift-giving, let each of us be aware of the gifts of life and new life that God has given us through one another. Have a great week!

    Love, Fr. Bill

Taking Communion Home to Someone in Your Care? During the distribution of Holy Communion, Eucharistic Ministers may give you one host when you present your pyx, rather than having you wait until after Mass to see Father. Two hosts would be acceptable as well, as long as both hosts are going to the same household.

  • BULLETIN

When all have gathered, a suitable song may be sung.

The leader makes the sign of the cross, and all reply “Amen.”

The leader may greet those present in the following words:

Let us glorify Christ our light, who brings salvation and peace into our midst, now and forever.

    R/. Amen.

In the following or similar words, the leader prepares those present for the blessing:

My brothers and sisters, amidst signs and wonders Christ Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea: his birth brings joy to our hearts and enlightenment to our minds. With this tree, decorated and adorned, may we welcome Christ among us; may its lights guide us to the perfect light.

One of those present or the leader reads a text of sacred Scripture, for example, Titus 3:4 (lines 4-7) or Ezekiel 17:22 (lines 22-24 4; I will plant a tender shoot on the mountain heights of Israel.)

Reader: The Word of the Lord.

    R/. Thanks be to God.

The intercessions are then said. The leader says:

Let us ask God to send his blessing upon us and upon this

sign of our faith in the Lord.

R/. Lord, give light to our hearts.

That this tree of lights may remind us of the tree of glory on

which Christ accomplished our salvation, let us pray to the

    Lord. R/.

The Fourth Sunday of Advent December 20, 2020

Blessing of a Christmas TreeChristmas is almost here! Have you blessed your Christmas tree yet?

According to custom, the Christmas tree is set up just before Christmas and may remain in place until the Solemnity of Epiphany. The lights of the tree are illuminated after the prayer of blessing.

In the home the Christmas tree may be blessed by a parent or another family member, in connection with the evening meal on the Vigil of Christmas or at another suitable time on Christmas Day.

That the joy of Christmas may always be in our homes, let

us pray to the Lord. R/.

That the peace of Christ may dwell in our hearts and in the

world, let us pray to the Lord. R/.

After the intercessions the leader invites all present to say the Lord’s Prayer.

The leader says the prayer with hands joined:

    Lord our God,

we praise you for the light of creation:

the sun, the moon, and the stars of the night.

We praise you for the light of Israel:

the Law, the prophets, and the wisdom of the Scriptures.

We praise you for Jesus Christ, your Son:

he is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace,

who fills us with the wonder of your love.

    Lord God,

let your blessing come upon us

    as we illumine this tree.

May the light and cheer it gives

be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts.

May all who delight in this tree

come to the knowledge and joy of salvation.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

    R/. Amen.

The lights of the tree are then illuminated.

The leader concludes the rite by signing himself or herself with the sign of the cross and saying:

May the God of glory fill our hearts with peace and joy, now

    and forever.

    R/. Amen.

The blessing concludes with a verse from “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”:

O come, thou dayspring, come and cheer

    our spirits by thine advent here;

disperse the gloomy clouds of night

and death’s dark shadow put to flight.

    Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

shall come to thee, O Israel.
