+ GATHERING +

CALL AND RESPONSE

P: Bless the Lord, our God!

C: Who sends us the Spirit:

P: The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,

C: The Spirit of counsel and might,

P: The Spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord.

C: Bless the Lord, our God!

GATHERING HYMN

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: We confess our sins before God and one another.

Pause for silence and reflection.

P: Gracious God,

C: We are tempted to be thankful only when things are going well for us.

We are tempted to take credit for all that is good in our lives. We con-

veniently forget that all things come from you. Forgive us for being

shortsighted, arrogant and thoughtless. Cleanse our hearts and bring us

back to your side, for you are all that we truly need.

P: God hears our repentance and answers our request for forgiveness. Receive the as-

surance of your creator’s mercy and return to the loving embrace of the one who

made, loved, and redeemed you. In Jesus’ name,

C: Amen.

SHARING OF THE PEACE

P: The peace of the Lord be with you all.

C: And also with you.

Share a sign of peace with your neighbor expressing God’s peace, a handshake, a

hug, a high five, or with whatever your neighbor is comfortable.

If you are joining us for worship online, please share a sign of peace in the

comments section.

HYMN OF PRAISE

GREETING

P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

C: And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Eternal God,

You have given us an unfailing promise: the gift of everlasting life for all who believe.

Sustain us with this assurance, that hope might shine out of all we do for the sake of

Jesus our Lord, Amen.

+ WORD +

FIRST READING Job 14:7-15 “Even a tree has more hope!

If it is cut down, it will sprout again

and grow new branches. Though its roots have grown old in the earth

and its stump decays, at the scent of water it will bud

and sprout again like a new seedling.

“But when people die, their strength is gone.

They breathe their last, and then where are they? As water evaporates from a lake

and a river disappears in drought, people are laid to rest and do not rise again.

Until the heavens are no more, they will not wake up

nor be roused from their sleep.

“I wish you would hide me in the grave[a]

and forget me there until your anger has passed.

But mark your calendar to think of me again! Can the dead live again?

If so, this would give me hope through all my years of struggle,

and I would eagerly await the release of death.

You would call and I would answer,

and you would yearn for me, your handiwork.”

L: Word of God, Word of Life.

C: Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING Job 19:23-27

“Oh, that my words could be recorded.

Oh, that they could be inscribed on a monument,

carved with an iron chisel and filled with lead,

engraved forever in the rock.

“But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives,

and he will stand upon the earth at last. And after my body has decayed,

yet in my body I will see God!

I will see him for myself.

Yes, I will see him with my own eyes.

I am overwhelmed at the thought!

L: Word of God, Word of Life.

C: Thanks be to God.

SERMON Hope-Filled Longing Pastor Andy Fetters A brief silence follows sermon.

HYMN OF THE DAY

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God,

Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

We offer prayers during a time of meditation and singing. If you have prayers you would like to have offered up during this time, please place names and concerns in the prayer request box prior to the hymn of the day. If you are joining us for

worship online please begin typing names in the comment section so we might

pray continuously during worship. We will sing the song responsively after each petition is offered.

LORD'S PRAYER P: Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.

C: Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

forever and ever. Amen.

OFFERING

We give thanks to our continued offerings during this time when we are unable to

gather together physically. If you are able to mail your offering to church (424 Hyde

Park Ave Waukesha WI 53188); if you can give digitally follow this link.

If you’d like to text your contribution, please use this number:

(262) 383-2338. We are very grateful for all your offerings and give

thanks to God, the giver of all things.

OFFERTORY SONG

OFFERTORY PRAYER

We answer when you call, O God, and all that we give is because you have first given to

us. Bless these offerings to the work of your kingdom on earth, and may they benefit our

sisters and brothers in all places. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A WORD ABOUT COMMUNION

The pandemic-forced physical distancing has interrupted our practice of Holy

Communion. But it hasn’t separated us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans

8:39). We don’t know how long this pandemic will last, but it won’t last forever. Fasting

from Holy Communion for a time might be a good discipline. This absence makes God’s

presence more profound. During this limited fast we might become more aware of God’s

presence around us and in creation in ways that we have never noticed before. Even in

times when a community cannot gather to share the sacrament, Jesus shows up, and we

are still part of the body of Christ.

BLESSING

P: The Lord bless and keep you.

The Lord’s face shine on you with grace and mercy.

The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace.

C: Amen.

SENDING HYMN DISMISSAL

P: Go in peace. Share the good news.

C: Thanks be to God.

June 21, 2020 Fourth Sunday After Pentecost Job 14:7-15, 19:23-27

Pray: Light a candle. Open your devotion with prayer.

Eternal God, you have given us an unfailing promise: the gift of everlasting life for all

who believe. Sustain us with this assurance, that hope might shine out of all we do for

the sake of Jesus our Lord, amen.

Read: Read the key verses from Sunday’s reading.

O that with an iron pen and with lead they were engraved on a rock forever! For I

know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; and

after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall

see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another.

(Job 19:24-27)

Reflect: Reflect on the scripture summary.

Job’s suffering had brought him to the point of pondering his own death. He longed to

be released to Sheol, the place of eternal darkness and separation from life. And still,

he remained faithful to God.

Connect: Connect in conversation with others in your household.

What was a high point of your day? What was a low point?

What do you think happens when we die? Are there worse things than death? What do

you hope will happen when we die?

Tell of a time you experienced the death of a loved one. Where was God in your loss?

For the littles: What do you think heaven is like?

Bless: Close your devotion with a blessing.

May God bless all life, all that dies, and all that lives forever. Amen.

Do: By acting on what we learn, we make God’s word come alive. Do the following

activity this week.

Do an internet search for life beyond death. Discover what other faith traditions

believe about death and life after death. Consider how being a Christian shapes your

beliefs about death and life.
