Fourth Grade
Dear Students,
Welcome to Fourth Grade! What an exciting year we have planned. In Religion, we
will study the Ten Commandments in-depth. You will also be studying a saint or holy person
in preparation of our class Mass and presenting your report to the class.
In Reading, you will move from learning to read to reading to learn. Comprehension,
main idea and details, and theme will be our focus while continuing to build our vocabulary.
You will be required to read two books over the summer. We will begin the year with an in-
depth study of Because of Winn Dixie in class. Be sure to bring your book on the first day of
school. You will also be reading Frindle and completing a related art project due on the first
day of school. See attached information regarding the two assignments.
Practice those math facts over the summer, especially multiplication and division! You
will log into Math 2.0 and IXL Math to help strengthen and maintain your skills used in Fourth
Grade.
In Science, we will explore and study the world around us including ecosystems and
geography. Our study of rocks and minerals will lead right into our study of the California
Gold Rush.
In Social Studies, we will cover California’s history beginning with the Native
Americans and on to California today. We will study the importance of the establishment of
the missions and how they contributed to the development of California. You will each study
the history of a mission and we will build models in class of some local missions for display at
our school’s Open House. We will also be lucky enough to visit the Sanchez Adobe and the
Woodside Store as well as participate in the annual Pioneer Day at school to experience
what it was like to be an early Californian.
Have a safe summer and we’ll see you in August!
Your Fourth Grade teachers!
