Inferences

• Authors don't always tell you everything!

• Inferences are made when you use clues in the story to guess what happens.

• Sometimes readers must use CLUES & EXPERIENCE to make guesses as they read.

• Think about what you know and what the author tells you to make inferences

Page 4: Fourth Grade Library Skills

What is the difference between Prediction and

Inference?• When you make a prediction it will be answered

by the end of the story.

• Predicting focuses on what will happen in the story while inferences focus on what a character will do, how he/she is feeling, or making other judgments.

• An inference may or may not be answered by the end of the story.

He tried hard to find it, but he had no luck. Elijah shut the computer down, and started back to his room, petrified. He turned one last time and looked at the computer.
