Writers Workshop
In Writing, students will write literary essays about texts they have read. Throughout the unit, students will be taught the value of close reading of complex texts. Students will learn how to read literature closely and write about the literature they are reading. Students will learn to write structured essays in which they make and support claims, and analyze and incorporate evidence. Students will also learn how to compare and contrast themes and topics in literature. Thus, students will be taught how to cite evi-dence from two texts in a purposeful way. The following standards will be addressed:
Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and infor-mation
Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which related ideas are grouped to support the writer's purpose
Provide reasons that are supported by facts and details
Link opinion and reasons using words and phrases (e.g., for instance, in order to, in addition)
Provide a concluding statement or section related to the opinion presented

Update on School Events
Safety Patrol
In November we launched our first AAA Safety Patrol! The goals of Safe-ty Patrol are to help children become safe pedestrians (in and out of school), foster qualities of leadership and citizenship, and build school community. Fifth grade student volunteers were selected for their leadership, courtesy, dependa-bility, interest, attitude, and scholastic standing. Safety Patrol members have been working hard to maintain order in the hallways during arrival and dismissal and in the cafeteria during lunch.
.
Student Council
Our Student Council has been busy planning school-wide events and activities! In November, Student Council sponsored a canned food drive. Thank you to everyone who participated. We collected and donated 500 pounds of food for City Harvest! Food collected helps to keep shelves stocked at 500 soup kitchens, food pantries, and other community food programs across the city.
