Design/Branding Design is not merely the art of making

things…No, it is the occupation of straining our ears and eyes to discover new questions from the midst of everyday life. People create their

environments by living. Beyond the rational observation of this fact, lie the future of

technology and the future of design. Somewhere near their loose intersection, we’ll

find the future of modernism.

Kenya Hara

Excerpt from Designing Design 2007

A lot of people talk about it. Yet very few people understand it. Even fewer know how to manage it. Still, everyone wants it. What is it?

Branding, of course – arguably the most powerful business tool since the spreadsheet.

Marty Neumeier

Excerpt from The Brand Gap 2006

When did WE start doing what WE

do?

For thirteen years (1987-2000), I was part of the largest A&E firm in Puerto Rico, the

CSA Group; the last two spent as a partner. In 2000, an old former classmate at

Georgia Tech and architect-developer asked me to start a design firm for his

development company. I took the opportunity to break off the multi-million-income,

multi-mega-project corporation to set up Conceptos Urbanos. After two years, I let our

baby go and established fournier:arquitectura csp, giving way to a life-long dream.

Our firm started with just two people, Glorimar Droz (very-small-office

manager!) and myself (principal-in-charge-of a-million-ideas-at-once!) and lots

of unanswered questions. We were able to sign in a large account (Santa Cruz

Medical Plaza) and a couple of government contracts (San Lorenzo Fire Station

and several remodeling projects). Soon, we were able to engage several friends

and clients into trusting our young firm with their dreams. Five years ago, AIT

Amy Pérez Pouymerou (super-girl-architect) joined Glorimar and me, helping in

every conceivable way and form, celebrate our early-acquired success.

Seven years later, fournier:arquitectura csp is an emergent professional services

corporation offering breakthrough services. In a nutshell, the firm seeks to

successfully leverage my track record working for large and well-known firms in

Atlanta (Jova Daniels Busby & Associates), New York (Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer

Associates) and San Juan (CSA Group) by offering conceptual innovation and

creativity along with the expertise as a strong service provider in design, contract

documentation, permitting and branding. Currently, the firm is 6-person strong. Last

October, we bought an old house and in January 2009, we opened our new facilities.

The firm is grounded on four guiding principles:

Focus on Leadership- Leaders infuse a fresh spirit in all endeavors

providing a distinctive vision in Project Execution. Leaders deliver. Leaders

wear their passion on their sleeves, regardless of Project size or nature.

Being big or small is not the crucial issue. If you don’t move, you don’t

move.

Total commitment for our community- What we do can only make sense

when done within a strong cultural context. To contribute to our community

with our efforts, our ideas, our dreams, is what drives our work. By

participating fully in our community we turn the design business into the

experience business.

Total passion for innovation- Creativity in a design oriented industry like

ours, is really a complex issue. The truth is that the urge to innovate at

fournier:arquitectura is market-driven. We ask ourselves: What do our

Clients need? How is that need fulfilled? How do we fit in when fulfilling that

need? It’s design, not strategy, that ignites passion in people. And the

magic behind better design and better business is innovation.

Positioned to grow- To grow is definitely a strategic choice. In order to be

part of the new economy, you have to nurture meaningful new relationships,

new alliances, new project-based partnerships. To face the challenge of

growth, you must energize the field with staff and associates who share the

firm’s core values. While disparate growth may stiffle innovation and

creativity, orchestrated growth can provide the structure for future leaders.

Page 7: Fournier Arquitectura

Unlike some other architectural design offices, we do not sponsor the "atelier" system, a term left over from the Beaux Arts past that

means that separate design teams are set up within the office to take one project at a time and carry it through from the very

beginning to the end. Our office is much more reponsive and simply structured. At F:A, we promote the interaction of specialists in each stage of design and production that move in and out pretty much in the way films are made. Just one person stays with a job

all the way, and that is the Integrated Project Team Leader, responsible overall for everything, and who is the one person,

aside from the principal, authorized to deal directly with the Client.

.

This way, we can avail the best talent posible for each Project. We promote the value of open collaboration, producing innovative

products for our Clients, avoiding copycat buildings and tired solutions. This approach not only fosters innovation but does it at

warp speeds, understanding our Clients’ needs for completing projects sooner than projected and anticipated. We have learned

how to assemble top-notch teams of specialists, inspire them to work together in extremely productive ways, only to disband them

when the Project is over and reconfigure those same teams for the next exciting job. So far, this model has worked extremely well

Why should YOU care 24/7 as WE do?

WE believe in servicing YOU above all. Providing breakthrough professional services-oriented architecture (SOA) is an art-science only mastered by the few. YOU expect design excellence in a total-service environment where great creative ideas and project profitability co-exist. Versed in historic and contemporary architectural theories, WE aspire at more than talking or writing about buildings. WE consider projects within a comprehensive realm of possibilities, looking at site opportunities, cultural and economic environments, physical and functional needs including budget constraints. Most architects stop here. No matter the size of the project, WE include in our analysis, construction techniques, marketing, post-occupancy issues and branding.

Design, finance, and technology work together in creatively and exciting new ways. Seven years ago, we were convinced that a design practice under this prescription was possible. We will work closely with our Clients in not only meeting their inherently complex building needs, but to do it in a fast paradigm-disrupting fashion.

Our Clients have witnessed the magic and proved us right. We believe our praxis reflects the results of our beliefs and efforts.

King’s Court takes its name from it’s

prestigious location on the Condado Area. The 25-story building includes 55 open lofts, all different from each other. Conceived originally as a Jenga tower, it developed naturally from various referential sources. A blend of rich and innovative ideas resulted in a colorful transparent / translucent prismatic tower, with offset volumes defying gravitational forces and establishing a pivotal icon at one of Condado’s main entrances.

The building gets its coloring cues from the sky and the nearby sea hues, proposing three tones of blues and aquas as its envelope. At its base, the parking area is clad in copper folding plates, allowing ventilation and filtrating light. Commercial spaces anchor the tower, responding to Loiza Street’s hyper-trade character.

Jaime Fournier-Ferrá is a graduate

of Georgia Tech (Masters of Architecture

1976 at age 22) and a prolific designer. After

being mentored by Malcolm Holzman of

HHPA fame (NYC), Jaime has devoted his

entire career to design. From 50-story

buildings to three-socket incandescent light

bulbs, Jaime will tackle any design issue.

Design challenges are by nature, complex

and deserve a bit more than a step-by-step

plan in order to resolve emerging nuances.

That’s where Jaime loves to come into

action.

Design is always messy, often characterized

by a non-linear process. Every project is

custom-tailored to its needs. Our proposals

are responsive only to the challenges at

hand. Conceptual brainstorming activities

lead the way for our new partnerships with

our clients. Jaime is in charge of all

accounts, leading the path to a

professionally executed and successful

project Jaime also manages the firm’s blog

to share news and current projects.

Page 53: Fournier Arquitectura

Glorimar Droz is not an architect but

will get your project executed as well. Glorimar

is a graduate of Universidad del Sagrado

Corazón, having majored in Communications

with a minor in Advertising and Public

Relations. All non-technical project

coordination with the firm’s Consultants, are

executed through her. Specific functions

include Project Information Management,

Project Accounting, Human Resources

Administration and “Mother-of-us-all”, running

the office as a tight ship. Besides her roles as

administrative guru, Glorimar aims at inspiring

the growth of the office as one of the best in

town. Already, one can see results from her

efforts in that direction.

Her next major project is to open a branch of

fournier:arquitectura csp in the Chelsea District

of New York City where Jaime first obtained his

professional architect’s license.
